I went to plug in my headphones this morning and sound was just played through the speaker. Tried resetting, killing a bunch of programs with no luck. I noticed last night also it wouldn't play through my car stereos line in. This sucks a big one and now im stuck on the bus listening to some woman clear her throat every 30 seconds. Im using ninja 0.45.

ninja is still in alpha stage so there's bound to be issues like this but also try a reflash? Or ask for a replacement since something might be wrong with the jack
I just flashed Kennethpenns Alien 3 Rom. Still the same problem. I don't see why it would just go so fast...
you know nvm, just looked down there with a flashlight, saw something. Fished out a decent sized piece of lint with a needle! son of a ***** but thankfully its just that.

Title says it all folks lol. I almost fully submerged my poor Eris, and to my suprise, almost all was well. My only problem is that my Eris thinks that there are headphones plugged into it when there isn't thus rendering my phone silent in everything the speaker would play. Now fortunately for me, under the cyanogenmod settings there was an option in the sound section to always play certain things on the speaker, an override if you will. This fixes my problem for notifications, calls and alarms. Still, I was wondering if there was a way to permanently overide the fooled headphone jack completely so I didn't have to use speaker phone on calls to hear anything and so I can play music and videos again. Any help would be terrific. Thanks in advance!

Pull the battery and bury the phone in a bowl of rice (uncooked) for a couple of days. It should help remove any moisture left.
Sent from my CELB ERIS using XDA App
The rice probably won't do anything at this point. You're screwed. The one thing you don't do when you drop your phone in the water is turn it on. If you ever get your phone that wet you immediately pull the battery and let it dry.
Basically your warranty/ everything is voided so I suggest you try opening the phone out and using compressed air to blow out anything that may be trapped inside.
I didn't use rice although I know you can. I actually did what you said Hungry Man. Pulled the battery and let it sit out in the sun for a couple hours. When I first turned it on after that, I noticed the headphone symbol popping up and disappearing a few times, and then it just stuck. Do either of you know more about what cyanogenmod does to overide the headphones? My guess is that if It can be done with a few sounds, it can be done with all of them.
I do know my warranty is voided. That's fine tho. I have the monthly insurance that covers water damage, but the phone is fine, so I might as well open it up. Ill need to fond a tiny star key though lol.

Simular Issue
I can relate, I recently rooted my Eris and have been toying around with some roms. Somewhere along the way my phone started to think that headphones are constantly plugged in. Extremly frustrating! Have tried new roms, re-flashing, etc. but nothing helps. May need to try that rom you've been using to compensate. Any suggestions would be great!

Did your phone get wet?
No it didn't get wet. Doesn't matter now anways. Just flashed the 2.1 stock rom and exchanged it for a new one.
idk what's happening, but it just started right now, the right earphone works, but the left one doesn't...
I haven't done anything to it either...
Is there any way to fix this?
Okay so i cleaned it in the inside a little bit..
and now the sound is back and it goes away and so on like back and forth in less than a second... wtf is ging on?
Yeah - that happened to me too on the right earbud. Maybe cleaning them helped, but my guess it was coincidence. Mine would randomly start working for a bit, then go out again. I chalked it up to a short somewhere in the wire and scrapped them.
Here's a link where you can get another pair really cheap: http://goo.gl/DRksf
They are pretty cheap buds. Just rock another pair.

yeh did what you guys said, I went out and bought better ones for like 5 dollars more.
When i plug in an auxiliary or headset with no mic, sometimes (a lot) my 3vo freaks out. music will skip, play faster, call people, voice search pops up. its starting to get on my last nerve. not a rom thing unless its on all roms.
same here
100% stock and have had the same thing happen many times as well. Just cancel out of whatever and wonder WHY...
Download headset blocker. The evo 3d supports inline controls, so if the jack touches a connection in there it thinks a control has been hit.

try plugging it in "clean" (one smooth push) What's happening is that the contacts on the plug are bumping against the mic/headset pin. Theres an app in the market to block mic/headset mode, i just don't remember the name.
thanks guys. so its everybodies hardware?
Mine.did.this when using a stereo jack plug not.Mic. I.rebooted with it in and it stopped

hahahahaha gave me a good laugh at work today
I noticed since I did the update to 198_7 my music plays through the headphones AND my speaker. I have reset my phone and the problem still exists. I have read a few other sites that say others are complaining of this same issue. Is there a fix or a work around for this? My coworkers are not a fan of this feature

mine does the same thing when playing through my truck, i just pause the music plug it in hit play unplug it so it stops the music then plug it back in and hit play. seems like a lot to have to deal with but i guess im just used to it and it seems to work every time for me. otherwise i hear it through the stereo and the phone and battery goes way to fast.
Im running the latest and listen through headphones all the time. No problem at all. Though I only use grooveshark for music.

@custodian considering it could have been a bad update which is considered android developement, it technically could be here as well as q and a.

The same happens to me but only when I am listening to music and a notification happens.
The notification will play through the phone speaker, the music will pause playing through the headset but will play through the speaker for 2 or 3 seconds after the notification stopped and then will continue playing through the headset again.
Permanent solution people!!!!
It happens to my Umi X2 too... But it started happening after 6 months of use with no problem. Someone in another forum said that it has something to do with a thingy which is pressed when the 3.5mm plug from the earphones is plugged in the jack. Anyway the strange part is that when i reboot the phone it works for a couple of days and then it happens again, so definetely a software bug. No one has any kind of permanent solution right?
ok so basically what happen the other day was that i installed some lockscreen app.. after uninstalling it as was not to my taste, I've somehow lost the sound to my device however when my wired headset is in everythings perfectly fine.. anyone have a clue what on earth has happened?
much appreciated

Well , yeah, same here randomly losing control of my audio device. Launching a video MAY sometimes fix it , but audio loss can be fixed through rebooting only. Wierd issue. On the official asiaretail ICS leak.
It is not software, but hw fault, try to press on the plastic cover by the camera.
At least I have this issue, when I plug in a micro usb, micro hdmi or jack in, sometimes when I pull it out, it somehow moves the external speaker and it stops to play, until I put some pressure on it )). There is a post about it.

Here's a way to manually override it:
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=com.woodslink.android.wiredheadphoneroutingfix
The downside is it won't auto-detect headphones, but the upside is that it'll work perfectly every time. I installed this after my alarm thought I was using headphones when none were plugged in; can't have that sort of failure again.
This happened to me once... I read about the speaker contact issue and tried the "rub like you're sealing an envelope" trick and no joy... I pressed to the point of fearing I would crush the thing and it started working again. It's been about 3 weeks and has been fine, since.
Yeah that is the solution. The problem is it comes again and again. Everytime I set the alarm I am checking if the speaker plays. Wow a 500 euro phone. )))))

I actually just bought a Maxx of craigslist and it had this problem of tinny or very quiet sound or sometimes none. I took the speaker out of my OG Razr and popped it in. Perfect now.
You can get the replacement speaker for $10 on ebay. Very easy to replace if you have the tools.
