Galaxy SII won't read sim card - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi, I saw someone is selling a galaxy s2 on ebay but he mentioned that the phone was unlocked but doesn't read sim card.
what do you guys think? easy fix? or hardware problem?
thanks

Try to perform a factory reset, if not bring it to the service center. My friend also has the same issue but it ended up as a repair , something went wrong with the contact points as per service center.

I'd be wary... Could it be because the phone has been reported as lost or stolen and blacklisted by the network? If that's the case and you buy it, there's no way you're going to get it to read your sim. Given that it's a recent phone, all the legit units are in warranty so I find it a bit strange that the seller wouldn't bother to have it fixed.

What would you do?

I recently bought a Galaxy S2 on craigslist (ok, big mistake, I know) and the phone worked fine for a couple of days and then the seller reported it stolen and that locked the service out. I went to the police, filed a report and took the paper work to my carrier (SKT in Korea) and they won't do a thing and doesn't actually care about the insurance fraud at all. So now I've got a perfectly good phone with no service... any ideas?
Well, people here won't help you unlock it.. We don't know if ur story is true.
But what I'd do is run ODIN on it to reflash it fully, then use a different simcard/account on it.
Maybe that will work, don't know. Worth a try.
Yeah... I don't think most people would be able to read the Korean police report anyway... I'll give it a shot since I got a KT Galaxy S2 since this phone fell through
What's wrong with craigslist? Couple 100 transactions and no problems yet. I truly think you bought a stolen phone.
If you have a chance I would do a switch if your eligible for a upgrade. Could you use it on different carrier?

Easy method to restore imei number.

Hello everyone,
My name is Samrina, my brother has broken my S3 it does not work any-more. He told network that he lost his phone, but he only lost his sim, and (PAY as you go) and they asked for imei number and he gave them the imei number for my S3. HE is so stupid so now my phone does not work, and he called them back and they will not take the imei off the block list, and also Samsung will not fix this because it is rooted and warranty is void. Now, the only other option is to send the phone to another country and they said it will work their and that they can also unlock it, they want £150 to unlock it by fixing the Imei number.
I don't know much about mobile phones but I already paid £500 when I bought the phone, now it is useless. Can anyone help? or is the only option to make sale in another country? stupid! they will not take off black list my imei number for a mistake. so unfair.

I have done this, they will not change it. They said they want written letter from mobile company that blocked it, but the mobile company are so lame, they said they can't do anything about it, and will not answer further correspondence. And that I need to contact GSM imei blocking some nonsense. It is not illegal to fix your own imei number, also I will fix it in another country where it will be legal.
Just tell me one, thing if it is possible or not to fix the imei number with current tools? or is this impossible?

What number would you be changing your imei to? Once you change the imei to anything other than what is on your phone's sticker is illegal. Since your brother reported the phone missing it's better he goes and solves the issue. This isn't something you can do on the phone he needs to do it in person.
No one on xda will help anyone with changing their imei.

Can you just tell me is this possible or not, I am not asking it be done for me how show me how to do it, all I am asking is, is it possible, because a mobile phone repair guy wants £150 to change it for me. He is from Pakistan, over there it is legal for them to change imei numbers. But I don't know if this person is trust-able.

No it's not legal anywhere what you can do is, go to consumer court and file in a complain and send a copy of it to both your service provider and samsung. It will be solved as soon as possible or if you are lucky you can get a renumeration too

how to do this? last time I went to court, the squerity guard touched me inappropriately they are perverts.
Why does this thread just seem completely wrong in everyway, maybe I'm hearing alarm bells, or maybe I'm just wrong!!

Whatever the reason. What you are asking to do is illegal. The network has black listed the phone because it was lost/stolen.
Suck up and get your 'brother' to call the network and unblock it. But is suspect this story is rubbish

I would imagine it is possible to change an IMEI but if someone over here finds out you have had it changed it looks to anyone like you have stolen the phone, the police will check the sticker IMEI and see that phone has been reported lost, they will then check the IMEI the software is reporting and see that it is different.
Open and closed case you have a phone reported lost or stolen, with a falsified IMEI you look guilty and you will get arrested and have to prove it is your phone (contract doesn't count because that is tied to the sim)
Discussion of illegal IMEI cloning is banned on XDA OP please close this post .

"Assuming" the story is legit its your brothers fcukup so give him your old phone and make him buy you a replacement. If he refuses kick his ass!!!! If you decide to let him off out of brotherly love put it down to experience.
Lol. Op is such a liar. Burn in hell you thieving prick.

Fact it is illegal to change imei numbers on your phone. It has to be the one on the sticker, if your story is true then all you have to do is go to the police station along with your proof of recipt and tell them you found your phone. They will make a call and unblock your phone in a matter of minutes.
I remember my sister left her handbag in nandos once here in the uk she had a Samsung d900i at the time. Me and my sister just the left the store and she remembered she left her handbag and went in to get it it was gone. cleaning lady said she didn't see it. So we went and reported it o the police. She had her contract phone credit cards bank cards cash. and sentimental stuff in it.
Anyway we reported the imei number to them and they blocked the imei on the phone. Next day we get a call that the cleaner lady had my sisters bag we went to pick up her bag and all was good the lady got the sack. We came home and the phone was blocked so i rang the company they couldn't do **** for me. So we took the recipt and the phone to the police station including the box and said a couple of days ago my sisters phone was stolen we got it back here is my proof. They made a call and instantly it was unblocked. That was 6 years ago. Maybe it is still the same.
If your story is legit this should work.

Blacklisted IMEI (Maybe)

So I bought a L9 T-Mobile last Saturday to use it with simple mobile but always get no service, I go several places that repair phones and all say was a bad sim so I bought a new one and same thing happend. I go to another place and say that my IMEI can be blacklisted and when he check says is blocked and reason is STL. I check here at home and says unlock... Im asking is there anything I can do to use this phone? I read that changing roms cmay also change the imei but I'm on 10g so means I can't root it yet.

Changing the IMEI on U.S. soil will land you in Federal Prison for a long, long, long time.
On a good note, I don't believe that T-Mobile has implemented IMEI blocking yet. Are you sure the device is for T-Mobile? Does it say T-Mobile on the top right corner of the glass? If so, try your sim in another device. If it works you may have a bad device.
What is the Firmware version and Baseband version?
You can try doing a factory reset.
Here are instructions on doing this: http://www.resettoo.com/hard-reset-lg-optimus-l9-p769-to-restore-factory-settings. Good luck.
Yes have the T-Mobile logo. I bought it from the girl next door on my vacation on Florida. She say she bought a Galaxy 3 so didnt need this phone anymore and give it to me for $150 and since I have a mytouch 3g slide I obviously accept but use mini sim and wait till I got back and bought a mini sim just to find that dont work.

I don't have my L9 handy. Maybe someone with 10g can confirm the same baseband. If it is different, that may be the issue.
Would you be able to have someone with a T-Mobile sim try it in your phone?
Not yet, thinking on going to T-Mobile and check, if works then transfer my number to them. Would suck change $40 to $50...
Symptoms of an IMEI Blocked Device
CANNOT:
Dial 611 to reach T-Mobile customer care
Make/Receive Calls
Text Messaging
Data/Internet
Use any tools or menus such as calendars, contacts, etc.
This is taken direct from T-Mobile.
I can verify for you whether or not its blocked if you like.
I PM you the IMEI, hope is not blacklisted... Is a good phone and I dont wanna use like an MP3/Video.
Also I check and I can open the tools like contacts, calendar, etc.
Wow! I was not aware that T-Mobile is already blocking IMEI. Thank You for the info.
Worst case scenario is you may be able to use one of those sim unlock services on Ebay to unlock it for AT&T.
The phone supports the 1900Mhz 3G band for that network.
There are plenty of pre-paid carriers that use the AT&T network. Net10 is one of them, and they have unlimited everything for a good price. Good luck.
Oh I didnt knew I can have 3G outside T-Mobile network. I might have to try that. Will keep update on what happend.

Yup we got the same data... also as Jrkoffjonson PM me is marked as blocked.
(My prior comment was not meant to upset the OP. Just some personal opinion. Removing them now.).
To summarize: proceed with caution as you already guessed what might have happened with your new phone.

I don't think "the girl next door" is giving you a good deal at all. Probably something "HOT" she was trying to unload quick. No ebay fee/trace left behind for the authority now that it is your problem.
Good luck ... proceed with caution.

Love when people do this kind of advices...
My final guess is she sell it to me, she report it stolen, bought a S3 with the money and im with a L9 that I use as a tablet...

These days mobile service providers have joined together and sharing centralized IMEI data for any possible criminal activities happening over the phone. Just dont buy any phone from anyone you dont know well. Even if you have bought it from relative may put you in legal issues. Always ask for bill (invoice), warranty card and box, even if warranty is over.
Just imagine that "girl next door" also does not know that the phone is used for illegal activities (drugs/terrorism) and may be thats the reason the phone IMEI might have been blocked and is still traced by International Investigation Agencies, then what? You might have saved some dollars at the cost of your fortune. So beware. Dont do this again. These days we are all wired and easily traceable.

[Q] Recycle Blocked Phone?

It would appear I've been silly and bought a blocked phone on Gumtree.
I bought it almost a year ago though and it's working on 3's network all this time, but none of the other networks work apparently. I didn't know this and sold it on eBay, the recipient couldn't get it working and I've had the phone back and given him a refund. He says he had a CheckMEND done and it says it's blocked on some networks.
I'm reading what CheckMEND say about recycling them and I get the impression if no-one claims it after 28 days it's deemed to be mine and I would then get the £££
I just wonder if anyone else has experience of this and any advice on what I should do?

It doesn't work because it doesn't accept others sim card or it's blacklisted (by IMEI number) because it is flag as stollen ?
If it's a Sim lock protection, no problem. If it's your IMEI number, the phone is dead and your can put it in a bin or use it as an expansive mp3/mp4 player.

Buy a new battery? You'll need to provide far more specific information if you need something other than that. What do you mean when you say battery went wrong?
