I recently bought a Galaxy S2 on craigslist (ok, big mistake, I know) and the phone worked fine for a couple of days and then the seller reported it stolen and that locked the service out. I went to the police, filed a report and took the paper work to my carrier (SKT in Korea) and they won't do a thing and doesn't actually care about the insurance fraud at all. So now I've got a perfectly good phone with no service... any ideas?
Well, people here won't help you unlock it.. We don't know if ur story is true.
But what I'd do is run ODIN on it to reflash it fully, then use a different simcard/account on it.
Maybe that will work, don't know. Worth a try.
Yeah... I don't think most people would be able to read the Korean police report anyway... I'll give it a shot since I got a KT Galaxy S2 since this phone fell through
What's wrong with craigslist? Couple 100 transactions and no problems yet. I truly think you bought a stolen phone.
If you have a chance I would do a switch if your eligible for a upgrade. Could you use it on different carrier?

Just tried using a KT ROM with their SIM card but no luck... think I'm gonna have to find someone super shady

Hi, I saw someone is selling a galaxy s2 on ebay but he mentioned that the phone was unlocked but doesn't read sim card.
what do you guys think? easy fix? or hardware problem?
thanks
Try to perform a factory reset, if not bring it to the service center. My friend also has the same issue but it ended up as a repair , something went wrong with the contact points as per service center.
I'd be wary... Could it be because the phone has been reported as lost or stolen and blacklisted by the network? If that's the case and you buy it, there's no way you're going to get it to read your sim. Given that it's a recent phone, all the legit units are in warranty so I find it a bit strange that the seller wouldn't bother to have it fixed.

this morning i woke up and tried to send a picture message. my phone rebooted and i got a message on the lock screen saying "No Signal Limited Service" i was running bulletproof 2.4.2 and the faux kernel. ive tried reflashing rom and kernel but i still keep getting the same message. any ideas on what i can do? been phone-less all day
Have you tried flashing another rom? Anyone around you have tmobile?
Sent from my HTC Amaze 4G using Tapatalk
yeah flashed another one. just got back from tmo and got a new sim, still not working. no one has tmobile around me.
this happened to me too, i called tmobile and told them my phone would not get any signal, they told me to read off the numbers from the sim card and i did, i turned it on and started working again.

where you rooted when this happened?
bought off craigs and i just got off of the phone with tmobile and they said the imei number is blocked and that the original owner needs to pay the insurance fee of $15 so im pretty much screwed.
Blacklisted phone....one of the few reasons I am skeptical about dealing with phones off Craigslist.
Sorry man

yeah dunno what to do. insurance let me file a claim cause i said my phone got stolen. i called the dude's number who i bought it from and i guess his phone is disconnected. ill give it a week and see if maybe hes just late on a payment.
this happened to me the other day with clist if worst comes to worst you have to unlock and sell as a at&t phone tmobile doesnt help much
so it wont be blacklisted on at&t? i have a friend at t-mobile and im going to talk to her to see if they can do anything at the store. ive bought 8 other phones from craigs before and never had any problems. i never thought they could completely block service from a phone.
I bought my Samsung sgs2 2nd hand about 14 months ago. It came with the box and everything so seemed legit. I've been using it faultlessly for about 8 months in the UK. I moved to Brazil 6 months ago and it was fine over there also.
Now I've moved back and it's not working, turns out it's been blocked on the UK networks. It happened exactly 1 month ago while I was in Brazil.
Any ideas what's happened? It seems unlikely to me the phone is reported stolen all this time later. I'm wondering if there is anything I can do about it?
It seems a coincidence that i've been away and now it's not working in the UK any more.
If I can't do anything legit to get the blacklist taken off, is there any other way around this? (PM me)
Did you check your imei number on a blacklist to find out.
Where did you get the phone from originally.
My guess would be you've bought it off of someone who's got a 2 year contract and they have stopped paying it,that's how you could get that timeframe.
That's how I would never buy any 2nd hand phone.
And I'm not sure if you are allowed to ask for help in doing shady stuff on here.

I think the best solution would be to talk to your provider about this.
As other people have mentioned, that's an issue you need to take up with your provider. There is nothing anyone here can suggest to fix this.
Speak to your provider. Thread locked
Hello, i bought my Samsung Galaxy s2 "epic" only 4 months ago, and TWO months ago, it started to have a circle with a strike through it ("loss of signal" i guess?) and it has NEVER worked since. Not even restarting it. I have also done a factory reset, but nothing works. I have tried replacing it through my insurance but they are always out of stock conveniently and want to give me some crappy cheaper phone. I want the one i bought! HOW do i fix this?! I already know there has been a "fix" for Sprint users with this problem, but I am Tmobile, so I am not sure that helps me any. No repair shops seem to know a thing about how to fix this..I am at my wits end, I have tried for over 2 months now to resolve this, and I just don't know how! I am not a person who knows about the technicalities of phones, just know how to use them. I saw a post that originally lead me to this site that had a fix on it, but it was waaay too complicated to really understand; i am BEGGING anyone who knows how to fix this to just walk me through it?! i have tried SO hard, this has been a HUGE source of stress for me after all of this, and I cannot afford to spend 600$ to replace it!!

It looks like to me the phone has either been reported lost or stolen which means that the real owner has rung the provider up and asked them to black list the phone so if anyone try to use it they won't be able to.It might be a possibly that the the modem part of your mother board is faulty you might just want to replace and hope for the best:silly:

Given the two bits of your original post that I bolded above, I think you may be in the wrong forum... Also, are you are SURE your phone is also called "Epic" anything? The Sprint Galaxy SII model is called the "Epic 4G Touch". But not the T-mobile model.
Are you on T-mobile in the USA? Or Europe?
What is your phone's precise model number? It is printed on the label under the battery.

I do have a similar problem.
After a coupleof month usage my phone randomly has this circle described above. Usually switching it off an then on agein does work and I get the signal back.
By the way, I am on T-Mobile Europe and have a Dual-Number SIM card.
Does it have anything to do with this?
I used the SIM card for years in other phones without problems.
Hello
I bough what it looks like a brand new i717 on craigslist at @ $200. It is in pristine condition, boxed with all the accessories including a genuine flip case... everything fresh and still smelling like new. It has a bad IMEI though.
The seller said it was a display unit on an AT&T store and that they block the IMEIs of the phones that are removed from the display counter. The guy even had an AT&T t-shirt... Truth or lie? I don't know, it still seemed a great deal to me and I bought it anyway since I've seen them on ebay selling well above $300 in "used" (all scratched up) condition.
So, I have two questions:
-Is it true that a blocked IMEI will work overseas? (I also took the risk on buying it because I will move overseas in a few months)
-Is there anything I can do to use it now with my T-Mobile account?
Thanks
Not sure about it working overseas. No experience.
But you could also sell it to somebody who wants to use it on T-Mobile USA since a bad AT&T IMEI doesnt matter on T-Mo
Looks like you are screwed unless you can find stuff to manage stolen phones... I'd take our as a lesson of "if it looks too good to be true..."

Really? I thought AT&T and T-mobile shared a blacklisted IMEI database. Can anyone confirm if it will work with T-mobile?
If you unlocked it, it can work overseas and if you root it and flash t mobile blaze ics modem you can use it on T-Mobile like what I'm doing now getting hspa speed

I have two questions, are you trying to call at&t and have them turn the phone on or are you just putting a sim card in and its not working? And if you did put a working at&t sim in without calling what did it say or do on the phone?

No, I haven't called At&t at all... I don't think I'm going to have any luck asking them to fix the imei of a blacklisted phone that I boought on Craiglist... I do have a T-mobile sim but I haven't inserted it yet. Why? because I have read many times that if you insert a sim on a phone with a blocked imei they will block the sim card automatically...

Oh that sucks. I will unlock it and take it with me overseas... I guess I shouldn't have any problems using it there (Lima, Peru).
Ok this sucks even more. A friend grabbed the phone and inserted his own AT&T sim card just to "see what happens"... his line got automatically suspended. It didn't even work when inserted the sim back to his own phone. Of course this has just happened a few minutes ago (Saturday night when customer service is closed).
I will call customer care tomorrow. Do any of you guys know what are the steps to restore the line? Is it just a simple call or does he need to buy a new sim?
Thanks
whoa that sucks. i didnt know they are that quick to take action.
That is a great way to screw with people that try to steal phones...

I agree. He called ATT this morning and his line was suspended as "lost or stolen". The rep never said anything about using the sim on a blacklisted device or anything similar. They restored his service right away,
Anyway... my i717 is now stored and I won't mess with it until I move overseas. Beware of inserting your sim on an blacklisted device!
Not to hijack your thread, but a "friend" of mine just stole a brand new note from best buy and wants me to help him unlock and root it. Not that I really care about best buy (and I really don't care that he stole it) but I'm thinking on refusing on general principle just because his actions raise the prices of phones and service for the rest of us. What would you do?

I'd tell your friend, that if he was clever enough to steal it, then he should be clever enough to get a job and buy one... the thieving little socialist.
In the principle of helping anyone root their phone, I'd not do it for them. I would help them read and learn how to do it, as that helps general understanding of what they are doing and may eliminate future help calls.

Want to sell it? I'll buy it from you. Mine has a dead pixel and while its annoying it's not bad enough for me to buy a new $220 screen.

Agreed
XDA is no longer worth my time.
Cell Spa sales stolen phones
Unfortunately I bought a Galaxy S2 in September from a cell phone store (" Cell Spa" in Sugar Land Texas) that sales stolen Phones. I was able to call AT&T and told them to release my SIM card and they did. They told me the IMEI on the phone was linked to a stolen phone so basically there was nothing I could do. They are not concerned about returning the phone to the original person who claimed the theft so I'm stuck with a blacklisted phone????:crying:
What was that line from Forrest Gump? Oh yeah, "stupid is as stupid does". Anyone that buys or sells stolen phones, gets what they deserve. Remember....it was stolen from someone that actually paid money for it!
