Ninphetamine-2.0.5 - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

hi i am on literom 1.5 can i flash the new Ninphetamine-2.0.5 kernal or do i have to update litepro to newest 5.0 thanks ,i have searched but no luck thx

Yes, you can!
But why do you not upgrade to LT rom 5.0, or even 4.?

because all my tweaks blue themes ect all set up
xda app sgs2, thank me if i helped

don't flame me but can i install this through either Odin (just using the kernel on PDA) or CWM (flash a kernel) from /sdcard on top of my stock KG3 ROM? nothing else required?

easy enough. is there any advantage using this kernel with a villain or litening rom? or would just the stock suffice?

I believe both those ROMs come with Ninphetamine 2.0.4 and will likely be updated shortly to 2.0.5. The advantage I find (I am on stock ROM) is that battery life is improved greatly and I can overclock and undervolt using setCPU. I actually underclock and undervolt the majority of the time and get twice the battery life I did running completely stock. For instance 800MHz is plenty for all the HD games I play, I usually run them on 1000MHz when I'm playing them online for less lag (like Order and Chaos).
It's a great kernel that why you'll find it included with a lot of ROMs coming out.
So, by adding 2.0.5 to either ROMs you're just getting the small battery life update which I have yet to see in action. But since 2.0.2 my battery life has been superb.
Enjoy.

Wow. Great answer. Thanks. I'm not really looking to do custom ROM. I just want to flash this kernel with the stock ROM. I'll have to do a lot more research before I can even begin understanding your explanation on underclocking and undervolting. I guess the setCPU comes with this kernel and I can just open it up and adjust values as I wish?
But even before that, I need a little direction before flashing my first kernel via CWM.
Is this how it goes?
- download ZIP file from his thread
- copy .zip to \sdcard (not in any of its subfolders)
- open CWM
- ** now here is where I'm lost. do I either:
- Reboot -> ClockWorkMod
- Reboot -> Download mode
- Kernel -> Flash kernel
and then where do I go from here?

Another question about this kernel
Hello,
I just have a little question about this kernel.
Is it normal that the /system part is mounted as rw when the system start (not set as ro in the init.rc) ?
Thanks

[Q] Upgrading the Kernel on a Custom ROM

Hello all,
Today I've flashed a custom ROM for the first time on my P500. Everything was smooth and my phone is now running #Devoid Froyo Final. I've gotta say that I bought this phone already modded with Light 2.2.2 running, but I wanted to learn the process and test other ROMs myself (also I was not happy with Light 2.2.2 battery consumption).
I'm using CWM as my custom recovery (installed via ROM Manager).
Now I want to go ahead and upgrade the Kernel to the latest Franco's build, but I just want to make sure that I have the process right (better safe than sorry). According to Franco's Kernel post the instructions are as follows:
1. Reboot intro recovery
2. Flash the latest kernel version from this topic
3. Reboot
4. Flash the ZRAM module
5. Enjoy
Still I need some clarifications with some of those steps:
1.- Franco's Kernel has two versions on the post: "V.17 and V.17 BFS"... it says that BFS is the one for Noeijns ROMs, so I want to confirm that for #Devoid Froyo Final I need the "V.17 BFS" version
2.- Since the instructions says that I should flash the kernel and then reboot and then flash the ZRAM module, should I use the "Reboot Recovery" option on ClockWorkMod to reboot directly into recovery to flash the ZRAM, or should I boot normally into the Phone OS and then reboot into recovery??
3.- Should I run any of the Wipes before or after flashing the new Kernel? (Data, Cache, Dalnik or Battery Stats). On the gazillion posts I've read I seem to recall that for Kernel installs the Battery Stats should be wiped, but I might be confused (I have posts overload LOL)
4.- Are there any other considerations that I should take before/after flashing the new Kernel?
Thanks in advance.
In general flashing kernels there is no need to wipe, but just be sure do a backup.

Ok.. what about the version of the Franco Kernel that I should flash (CFS or BFS) for "Devoid Froyo Final" ??

Thanks Master!!!!
May I suggest adding a couple of lines to your Kernel's post mentioning that fact??. It would help n00bs like me and avoid having this question re-posted.
Something like:
CFS for: 2.1, 2.2, 2.2.1 and 2.2.2 based ROMs
BFS for: 2.3.X based ROMs
Thanks for all the great work!!!
I read in one of the posts that we don't need to flash the zram initialization zip as its on by default. I have devoid too, but haven't flashed that zip. Should I or should I not?

Some roms include the zram module (e.g. Devoid froyo final) while others don't. Read whether it's included on the roms page.

[Q] Kernels

Hi All,
I bought my SGS 2 yesterday and flashed it today so I'm entirely new to this phone but not entirely new to Android because I had a Nexus S before.
My questions are:
1. At the moment what is the best kernel for performance, stability and good battery life while being secure (I don't want the triangle during boot) and supporting CWM?
2. Will my root remain with any kernel that I flash?
Thanks,
1) respect forum rules (cluttering forum)
2) read sticky posts (you don't have coded/modded anything)
3) wrong forum (this goes in Q&A forum)
4) read the relevant thread and learn from them
Other solutions here:
http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?desktop_uri=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.youtube.com%2Fwatch%3Fv%3DJmvCpR45LKA&v=JmvCpR45LKA&gl=IT
You've been on the forums since 2007 and you still don't know where you should post a question? This is Android Development not Question. Theres different sub-forum for a reason.
1) At the moment Tegrak would be the best performance since your able to control your GPU clock speed as well as overclocking the CPU. The best battery life would (personal preference) be Cognition own kernal built for his own ROM.
To get rid of the triangle flash it using CWMManager (APK), you just get the zImage out of the kernal file put it on your sd card go to CWMManager app and select flash kernal then select zImage. Although you first would have to Flash a custom-kernal with CWM to flash a rom, use odin to flash stock kernal and then use CWMManager to flash the kernal, this will get rid of the annoying triangle.
2) Yes.
Press thanks if I helped
I would recommend that you use the cf-root kernels they are quit good.
As far as I know are there at the moment no special kernels with uv or other cool features. Most of them are quite similar.
I try at the moment the Jame Bond kernel because I know this one from the Nexus S but just flashed 5 min ago so can't give any informations.
Because of the triangle when you flashed the cf-root kernel then boot once with it
go back to download mode and flash the stock kernel of your choice.
I don't know if it works with other kernels but fore sure with cf.
The best thing would be if you don't care about the triangle is too much work if you always try to remove it after you flashed something.

[Q] flash back original kernels before using another modified kernel?

hi guys.
i'm using an insecure kernel and setCPU currently. i'm trying to experiment which kernel or overclock app would be better on conserving battery life (btw, i have a sgsII, and i really want to underclock it for prolonged batt life )
i saw cognition and darky somewhere in the threads. i would like to try them out. i have a few questions:
1) should i flash back the stock kernel before i flash either cognition or darky (or any other custom kernel at that matter)? or i could just flash them directly over the insecure kernel?
2) i used superoneclick root. should i uninstall it or something before i flash the darky or cognition?
3) can install overclock apps like tegrak or setCPU when i use darky or cognition?
Darky and Cognition are full rom's (not only kernel). You don't have to go back to stock.
I would flash cognition 1.20 with CWM and then underclock with setCPU. Best values for battery life.

thanks for replying. i have follow-up questions if your don't mind. i'm new to all of this tweaking stuff.
1) does clockwork mod function like odin (in which i will use CWM instead of odin to flash cognition or darky)?
2) you said darky or cognition were full roms. are they rooted automatically, or i should use superoneclick to root my phone after flashing either one of them?

No but if a rom is made in CWM flash able format then yes.

Read the instruction for the rom it says its rooted or not .
Cognition is rooted but you may need to a have CWM 4 on your phone and easy way to get that is with CWM and root kernel .

Which kernel is better ?

Hi,
I realized these 2 leads kernels :
SpeedMod SGS2:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182498
Ninphetamine-2.0.2

Which is the best for your opinion and what do you recommend ?
Neither try them both yourself .

Ninphetamine-2.0.2 is the best and optimized kernel for all custom roms....
am using it now...

The best kernel is stock KG3 right now. All those custom kernels are based on outdated KF, since that's the latest released kernel source. None of them solve the Android OS bug either. I tried them all and returned to stock.

Me too. I haven't received any proof, that Ninphetamine is better.
Now I'm trying lulz. 24 hours flight is normal. At least it has better CPU power and clock management.
Ninphetamine is VERY fast, i'm trying to find something fast as it is.
Beside I can use setCPU to customize the clockspeed, I don't see any advantage if using customize kernel.

At least SGSII is already as very fast as you can't get it from it on 100% yet.
By default Ninphetamine uses ondemand CPU Profile. So, I hadn't noticed notable changes in speed with equal settings.
Battery life stayed the same, apropos.

setCPU doesn't provide for you any notable improvement in battery life. Undervolting (UV) does. So, setCPU on Ninphetamine provides UV. But the best way IMHO - is Tegrak Overclock Ultimate - it's capable to change voltage of the Core, Bus and GPU. And of course it works better on author's kernel (lulz - it means tegrak kernel).
Unfortunately, setCPU is not fully compatible with all kernels and vice versa - Tegrak is not compatible with all kernels.
If you recommand the stock KG3 kernel, may you post a link please ? (can't find it).
Thanks.

Its in the stock KG3 firmware .
Download Extract Zimage flash via Odin or CWM .

note many many users confuse kernel with firmware its not the firmware only part of it . the bit that interfaces at the lowest operating level machine code as it where .

Nothing against you or the developer but its 100% placebo effect, The S2 is extremely fast that I doubt even kernel changes would matter or even slightly affect speeds, sure you get over 9000pts in quadrant but no real world increase, w/o the voltage controls you cant tell the custom kernel from the stock kernels apart.. Unlike during the S1 days.

Can you tell me one app or game that runs slow with the stock ROM and kernel? This is a very fast phone anyway. It runs everything very fast right out of the box. No need to go playing with voltages and clock speeds and risking bricking the phone.
These alternative kernels are just for -my quadrant score is bigger than yours- type of users and have no real life improvement over stock.
When I moved from an old stock kernel to Ninphetamine-2.0.2 I saw a big difference with the application invocation speed. Even clicking the keyboard was very smooth and without any delay unlike the old stock one.
Maybe it's because the stock kernel version was older I'm not sure , but this is real.
Try this.

Change what setting? The kernal will come with its default settings when you flash it
ok, i just was confused, since i have seen alot of comments about changing their voltage setting to over clock and under clock. i wasnt sure if they had a default automatically. kernels are the one thing that confuses me.
Kernels will have default voltage settings and (usually) are not over, or under-clocked by default. If you want to change those values you'll need an app like voltage control.
thanks i'll look into it. would it be best to read through the posts under the SC3 Rom to see what would be a good voltage setting to run with?

I have been running SC3 milestone2 (AWESOME btw) for a while as my daily until the bugs get worked out on ICS. I use Leankernel however because my phone had display (color and lines) with KGB. LK comes overclocked at 1.2ghz. It is fixed, whereas KGB can be overclocked more (up to 1.7 but you most likely wont get past 1.3 or 1.4 and be stable).
If you want to flash kernels an wasy way to do it is with SGS Kernel Flasher (free in the market). It will back up you current kernel so it makes trying different kernels easy.
