thanks, i forgot to edit my post, i had to use the other links to get the download since some didnt work... would u be able to answer this for me.... i going to download KGB kernels and flash thru cwm but do I'm new to using custom kernals and I'm wondering if i actually have to change the settings or does it have a default setting?

Change what setting? The kernal will come with its default settings when you flash it
ok, i just was confused, since i have seen alot of comments about changing their voltage setting to over clock and under clock. i wasnt sure if they had a default automatically. kernels are the one thing that confuses me.
Kernels will have default voltage settings and (usually) are not over, or under-clocked by default. If you want to change those values you'll need an app like voltage control.
thanks i'll look into it. would it be best to read through the posts under the SC3 Rom to see what would be a good voltage setting to run with?

I have been running SC3 milestone2 (AWESOME btw) for a while as my daily until the bugs get worked out on ICS. I use Leankernel however because my phone had display (color and lines) with KGB. LK comes overclocked at 1.2ghz. It is fixed, whereas KGB can be overclocked more (up to 1.7 but you most likely wont get past 1.3 or 1.4 and be stable).
If you want to flash kernels an wasy way to do it is with SGS Kernel Flasher (free in the market). It will back up you current kernel so it makes trying different kernels easy.

what bugs are you experiencing on ics keeping you from using it as a daily? im running ths 6.1 with no major issues at all. only mi.or thing i notice is the browser will hang up on a white screen sometimes but a refresh fixes it.

thanks i will look into that app and the kernel u mentioned. i have been meaning to look into overclocking but still new at it and want to be careful.

Hey guys, new to the forum and the Vibrant, and i first want to say i love the setup and this forum is insanely informative on its own. Im fully rooted/themed/tethering/modded and the only question ive had to post was about icon .png size haha. so thanks for setting up a VERY efficient forum.
now my question: do i have to install a custom kernel in order to overclock/underclock? I installed setCPU and it wont let me scale past 800mhz. Also no presets, its just says to use conservative scaling for GalaxyS phones. No thank you, i wanna push this thing! Running stock kernel and firmware. Thanks ahead!
I believe you will need to flash one of the many kernels that fits what you want it to do, you should be able to under clock android if your phone is rooted but you will need a new kernel to overclock it.
when you install setcpu make sure you do auto-detect. since you already have it installed, hit menu->device selection->autodetect speeds
on a stock kernel you should be able to set max to 1000000mhz. With the Vibrant ALWAYS LEAVE SCALING TO CONSERVATIVE or you will have freezes.
To get past 1000000mhz you will need a custom kernel, I have been happy with both King's and JAC's. Just download one of their kernels, flash it through CWM, reboot, and run setcpu again and make it autodetect your speeds, from there you should be able to clock up to 1200000mhz

It all depends on the kernel you flash. If you flash voodoo it will change the way the phones file system works. However if you just flash JAC's OC/uv kernal it will OverClock up to 1.2 ghz and UnderVolt some of the midrange frequencies to help improve batterylife. I reccomend reading up on his threads before you attempt these flashes. He has made the procedures to flash these kernels very easy to implement. Good luck and happy flashing! ok so i've went through the threads here and pretty much got a handle on what's what but some are little outdated. though since i'm new, i've already applied the ED01 froyo OTA update from stock as soon as i opened it up and a lot of the stuff here are applied to older firmwares. so first things first, i tried to root using this guide http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=790004 using the fascinateRootv02 but no go. i hear you can use superoneclick but looking at the superonelick thread, samsung fascinate is not supported? so if someone can point me to the right direction, i would appreciate it.
so with that said, i know there are a lot of roms available. i want to just stick to one that works well and avoid much as possible in keep changing roms. so what is the most popular roms out of the bunch?

I havent rooted an official 2.2 update.. but this should work.. welcome!!!
EDIT.. I BELIEVE YOU COULD INSTALL odin, and just flash a freshly rooted official ED01.. but ide wait for somemore answers b4 trying anything.. ppl usually get at u pretty quick

You are correct. You can just odin a CWR of your choice and then flash a ROM with the Super User package already in place and kaboom rooted
Superonelick (version...let me look here.....ugh... version 1.8) is fascinate compatible and I myself have used it before.

I believe both those ROMs come with Ninphetamine 2.0.4 and will likely be updated shortly to 2.0.5. The advantage I find (I am on stock ROM) is that battery life is improved greatly and I can overclock and undervolt using setCPU. I actually underclock and undervolt the majority of the time and get twice the battery life I did running completely stock. For instance 800MHz is plenty for all the HD games I play, I usually run them on 1000MHz when I'm playing them online for less lag (like Order and Chaos).
It's a great kernel that why you'll find it included with a lot of ROMs coming out.
So, by adding 2.0.5 to either ROMs you're just getting the small battery life update which I have yet to see in action. But since 2.0.2 my battery life has been superb.

Wow. Great answer. Thanks. I'm not really looking to do custom ROM. I just want to flash this kernel with the stock ROM. I'll have to do a lot more research before I can even begin understanding your explanation on underclocking and undervolting. I guess the setCPU comes with this kernel and I can just open it up and adjust values as I wish?
But even before that, I need a little direction before flashing my first kernel via CWM.

- download ZIP file from his thread
- copy .zip to \sdcard (not in any of its subfolders)
- open CWM
- ** now here is where I'm lost. do I either:

yes just download kernal go to cwm and then goto flash kernal it will reboot itsself and flash kernal fir u did on my 1.5 lightrom

What kernel is safe to use with the stock rom unlocked?
Someone, i think Joker? Made a bunch of kernels and its in Dev section somewhere, any of the Blur kernels should be GTG. Nandroid backup and if have any issues just restore.
I downloaded one of jokers kernels, but it says cm9fix, so I'm not sure if that will work on the stock unlocked rom or not.
I'm trying the one from jokers website now that said blur 1.3 hopefully it works

Blur1.3 *SHOULD* work, never tried personally i jumped straight to CM7 then CM9 after unlocking. Worst case scenario you can just Nandroid back to your backup if it doesn't work.
Do kernels just let you overclock, or do they do more. I can't find any info on the blur1.3 on his website it was just a download link?

Depends on the kernel, the 1.3 in the name suggest that it allows you to overclock up to 1.3 ghz. Some kernels have tweaks and improvements to make them perform better, run more efficiently, etc. However I cant tell you exactly what Joker's blur1.3 does or doesn't have, other than the fact that it will allow you to overclock.
So far it's been running smooth. Not sure about all the tweaks, but I am overclocked to 1.3 without any problems. Thanks guys for all the help, I really do appreciate it.
Hey guys, I'm not gonna ask the dreaded question "Which Kernal is best?", but I am currently rooted and want to overclock to 1.5, but besides that, what else should I be looking for in a kernal?
What about modems (or is that embedded in the kernal)?
We only have 2 options, Entropy or Siyah and they do not include a modem.
Check the dev section for kernels & modems.

Both kernels we have offer oc abilities.
Personally I would look at stability and battery life but that is just me. Try both and see which suits your needs.
Modems are not associated with kernel and depend on your area. Whichever works the best where you are.
We have two choices here and both are incredibly stable and allow overclocking. You can't go wrong. Basically the biggest difference as far as I can see is the recovery that comes with it which is almost entirely preference.

So if I find a ROM I like but want to experiment with the other available Kernal, is it as simple as flashing my ROM first, then once booted up go into Odin and flash the other kernal i want to experiment with?

Just use CWM to flash the zips provided or Mobile Odin if you prefer it that way.
No need to use a computer to change the Kernel.

I guess what I'm asking is if I have a rom with the Syiah kernal, is it possible to keep that same ROM but swap kernals, sorry, I just wasn't clear on what your answer meant.
I'm guessing your saying it is indeed possible and just flash the .zip for a different Kernal on top of an already installed ROM.

Changing the Kernel on 2.3.4 & 2.3.6 roms will not break anything.
For CM7, CM9, MIUI etc you have to stick with what is included or see what works with it.

For example, latest Siyah with touch recovery. Awesome for flashaholics.
Your talking of version .14 I assume, if so, doesn't it say in .13 description that .13 would be the last for Gingerbread?
