How would I go about, editing an HTC app? I don't use any of the stock skins like Blue Sky or Burgendy, so I removed those apks. I also want to erase there files from the Fusion.apk to save 20+ mb. Once I edited the apk, pushed it, set right permissions, rebooted, I was stuck at the Sense loading screen. (White HTC Screen.) So question is, how can i edit this so that I can remove this bloat and keep things running?
Bump! Please.
i dont think you can theyre files are written straight into the m10's and i dont think you can delete m10's
There's multiple m10s. One for each skin. Should be fine without the ones for the deleted skins. Just don't know how to get it to work after deleting them.
Bump. Please.
What are you using to sign? You have to make sure you aren't signing it as a system app.
Signing with test keys. Tried it unsigned and neither work. Also did the right permissions.... Lost.

Use this. Don't sign it as a non-system app.

Does anyone know of a tutorial on how to build custom roms. Im not really trying to do anything fancy like eclipse or some of the other experts but i would like to take the "naked" version and add a few things in that i like from other roms.
Im just trying to make a buisness like rom that has blur corprate email, calendar, desk clock, camera, camcorder, gallery and really thats about all. I can get the rest of the stuff from the market.
Sorry if this has been asked over and over again.
I think most likely u could just use root explorer and sift through the rom zips for the apks and lib files needed for the features/apps you want and push them to the necessary spots. I'm sure there is also more complicated and in depth things you could do but for the most part this should work. Just might take a lot of experiments to figure out what is needed for anything that is interdependent on other features/apps to work.
Thanks
I will play around with the root explorer and see what i can tear up.
Best rom making software
Is root explorer the better option or can the premium version of the rom manager be used also. I hate to buy an app if its not the best one.
I think that feature in rom manager will work.
I have never used that app tho as the x2 isn't "officially " supported on that app.
Root explorer is the best (2-4$)(can't remember how.much exactly cost)
I have spent for an app. (Wave launcher is close 2nd)
It makes editing system and other files simple and easy. Also a majority of people use that app which makes it easier when explaining how to change things and etc.. when everyone uses the same app lol.
It even makes mounting system from r/o to r/w and back again as simple as touching a single.button once at top of the screen. Just an all around simple smooth easy to use and explain app /end rave lol
would you happen to know of any reason why i cant install the blur email and calendar? I have the apk's but i just errors out when i try to run them.
I think u will need to push them into system /app and fix permissions and maybe owners..permission needs to.be like all other system app. Rw-r--r--
Then they should show up after reboot. If they don't work u might need to add in email authentication apk or something ...

What this guy said is what you need to do.
This is actually something my boss and I have discussed. Taking some open source apps and changing them so they are specific for our company and also trying out a basic rom. Once the reality of the fact that only a handful of the people have the same type of Android phone put a quick halt on the rom idea. Would be a fun project though.
Edit:
I modified this post because this has become more involved than simply the fb app. It has evolved more towards the build.prop file being modified.
Original post:
i tried to download the facebook app from the market, and it's not showing. so i did a titanium backup of it from my phone and installed it on the nt, initially i was able to open it and sign in. i went to a few posts, looked at a few friends, etc. after turning it off, it would force close each time i tried to reopen it. i dont know whats happening to make it force close. i presume since it's not showing in the market, it's communicating with facebook or the market and one or the other is telling it no.
is there anyway to tell the market this is another device so it will show other apps that are not available right now?

Get your Facebook apk from this compressed file found in this post. Once you unpack/unzip it navigate to the extracted apps folder to find the facebook, Twitter etc. apk's
I'm going with dodgepot's method. I've noticed other apps were not available since posting this. This method should clear it up. It will be late tonight before I'll get a chance but I'll let you guys know the results.

Honestly the facebook app is not that good any version, its better if you access it by browser just bookmark the page.

Oppinions vary on the fb app. I like it personally. I did get it to work however. I installed the updated app just fine from a backup of my evo shift. However... I tried the build.prop mod. Nogo. I tried the nexus s and the .... crap.. drawn a blank here... the second mod listed in the linked page. Neither worked. Anyone with experience modding the build.prop file, I have a few questions. In the original file there are more of the ro. fields listed than what are shown on each of the mods. Do these other original lines have to remain in place or should they be deleted? Some of them look to me as if they would conflict with the new lines. Also, what's the endresult of a screwed up build.prop file? Does something other than market rely on this file? If its geeked up, will I brick or have to re-root? Also, I presume this file is something that comes with the 1.4.0 rom. Is this something that could/should be replaced when the root process is taking place to prepare the device for the market? I guess when cm roms, etc. come out they will have there own build.prop that will define the device as something else to the market so more apps are available since google doesn't recognize the nt as a "market" device?

Do not remove7touch the other .ro's of build.prop just change the lines provided. The end result with a screwed up build.prop basically will be that your device won't be recognized by market and certain apps if not all, for ex. airdroid when i login in my browser to access my nook it recognize it as Droid3 because i changed my build.prop to Droid3. You won't brick or have to re-root your device if you mess up with it, by using adb push of the original build.prop is enough. Build.prop can be changed to a modified one before root i did it and worked like a charm.

Hello, I am wondering if I open an apk with 7-zip (not extract) and replace all images, including the .9 PNG's, and close it and push, set perms, etc. Will it work??
I know I can do it with regular PNG files, however, I am not sure about .9 PNG's.
Again, I am simply replacing, not changing XML, resources, etc.
If a developer of themer could please confirm, I would be ever so grateful....
Thanks in advance..
Anyone?
Bump...please...
You can change them, but you have to build the new ones in Eclipse.
Also, don't expect to be doing this kind of stuff for too much longer, with market apps getting ready to be encrypted, I assume this type of hackery will break them.
You need to redo the ninepatch, using the draw9patch tool in the SDK. When you edit the 9.png it becomes a regular .png (not stretchable).
See here: http://developer.android.com/tools/help/draw9patch.html

I don't actually want to change the images. I was going to take them out of another SystemUI.apk and put them in the other as mentioned. I am not going to be doing any editing of the .9 pngs other than replacing them with the same name and everything (just aesthically more pleasing to the eye)...
Thanks for your response by the way....Help me out

very good, easier than sitting here freezing it all in Titanium. I tried using Absolute System but being S-on for now means no go. Thanks

Yeah I started by doing that....but I decided it was taking too long and it would be easier to do an "adb shell ls" in /system/app and just copy and paste the names of the ones I wanted to get rid of into a zip
Although looking back, that way would've been quicker than making this...but whatever
Just curious. To anyone who has run this, how much space did it free up on the internal storage?

I believe /system has its own, separate amount of storage...so deleting these doesn't get you more space in /data
Not 100 percent sure on that though.
Yeah, just looked in Titanium Backup, System has 1.84GB and Data has 12.2GB
And anyway, these apps are a few megabytes...so....at most maybe a couple hundred megabytes of system are freed up

Amex Serve is "VZW_Serve.apk and VZW_Serve.odex"

Duh... sorry, the VZW prefix messed me up.
Is there an easy way to modify the script to remove stuff that I want to stay? I've had issues before when I changed a file in a Zip as I don't have a Zip program installed. Using Win7 64-bit.

Just open the zip(don't extract it), navigate to "META-INF\com\google\android" and copy updater-script to your desktop(or anywhere really). Then open it with notepad(I used notepad++, but notepad should work fine) and edit the line that says "delete("/system/app/......". When you've finished adding or removing the apps you want to keep or want to remove save the file and copy and paste it back into the zip.
Let me know if you need me to clarify anything

I let all the bloatware apps update via the Play Store when I restored my phone after unlocking. It freed up 200MB for me on the data side, no idea on the system side.
Looking back at it, I think the removal of HTC_Widget_ShowMe.apk/HTC_Widget_ShowMe.odex gets rid of all the HTC Widgets. If so, does anyone happen to have a copy of them so I can push them back to my phone?
EDIT: OK, clearly I am a moron, the ShowMe removal did not affect the HTC widgets. I still don't have things like the Mail widget when I go to put a new one on 1 of my screens though. I can see the APK via Root explorer. Anyone have any idea on what the issue may be?

I think you're on to something. I'm also missing the option of adding the HTC widgets although the widget I previously had is still on my home screen.
Somehow this is hiding those widgets from the Widget Screen but not removing them from the system.

Whew, thankfully it's not just me... anyone else confirm that they cannot add any new HTC branded widgets? Or, if you ran this script and can still add widgets, did you omit any of the APK's from the script?
Rexdog: I have the DroidDNA system dump zip file... if you can just post the ADB command to flash the file(s) back, I may be able to find out which one will get this feature back by the time you get to a PC.
I'm trying to install Kik Messenger twice. I have two accounts and don't like to log out because I lose all of my conversation history. I'm currently using Titanium backup's profile feature, which is a very nice fix, but it's still a pain having to switch back and forth between profiles. I might be looking for "perfect" when perfect doesn't exist. I am completely new to modding apks and Android in general, all of my work on this so far has been "trial and error". Anyways, here's what I have:
I have the Google Play version of Kik installed on my phone. I have taken that app and modified the package name successfully using apktool. However, when I try to install, I get an error saying something about duplicate provider authority. So I did some research and learned that I'm supposed to edit this part of the AndroidManifest. So I have played around with that a little bit and after I change the authorities, I am able to install the modded app. However, it crashes immediately.
Does anyone know how to fix this problem with the provider/authorities? I have attached the Kik apk, which has the modded package name and has been signed. The provider/authorities have not been touched by me in this attachment.
EDIT: I just realized this got posted in the wrong section. Sorry. Could a mod move this to a more appropriate section please?
