So I need help deciding on a rom/other questions - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So for the longest time I had a jailbroken iphone so everything I'm used to is about iOS. I've had my Atrix for about 4 months now and I've been fairly happy with gingerblur, but I heard there was some new updates or other things going on. I dunno if I want an unlocked bootloader, I seriously dont know what to do because I want to start over and just start from scratch.
Suggestions or do I need to provide info? I just want to update my phone

what features do you use currently?
what new features do you want?

To be honest I dunno what features I use
I just want to be able to download apps and not worry about them being locked or not from a "trustworthy" source.
I dont know what's different between gingerblur and stock

I have had the atrix for a while now and right after i got it i rooted and installed gingerblur and was happy with that but being curious i just recently did the update unlocked the BL rooted and am now running the alien rom and am very happy with it. Updating is rarely a bad thing. just takes time Hope this helps

could you post what you did exactly?
what update did you do to unlock the bl? There's so many things I just dont understand no matter what I do

or just links to w/e I dont mind

One bump before I head out for the evening

ok i used a couple different places but ill try to explain
first of all i had titanium backup to restore most of my apps and everything because you will lose everything. just a heads up.
1. I used this to rsd flash the "Full 2.3.4 sbf..."
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138204
2. I then put the phone in fastboot and used this from #13 on
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
3. so now you are on 2.3.4. unlocked you can stay on just that if you want a stock rom. but i recommend rooting haha..
4. I could not get the root from #1 to work so i sorta worked my way around it.
5. I used this to get cwm recovery on my phone
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1138541
6. then I flashed this file to obtain root
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1140110
7. Then flashed the alien rom from here
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186537
8. thats it i hope you can make sense of it since its kinda screwed up lol but everything is working great for me and im defiantly glad i updated. if you have any questions just ask
also if you do do this make sure you check for updates under development for the rom its already updated a few things in the week that ive had it.

Ok I lied I found what I want
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1186537
I want that on my phone. Now my question is does this come with an "Unlocked bootloader"
Or do I have to do something to get an unlocked bootloader?
What does an unlocked bootloader even mean

what i posted will get you that exactly.
What you have right now is a locked bootloader, rooted with gingerblur from what i understand. with a locked bootloader you cannot have a true rom gingerblur is more of a theme that gets rid of the apps that slow your phone from the factory.
with an unlocked bootloader you can flash true roms and kernels etc..

Do people even try looking...

You can download this "over the air".

[Q] about flashing new 1.8.3 before update to 2.3.4

or if i do that i will be in risk getting a hard brick??

When in doubt, use the fruit cakes! =D Mmmmmmm
But yeah, honestly, you don't need to re-lock or un-root. You can just use the Automated Upgrade found here. That will save all your data and stuff, and it'll upgrade you to Gingerbread! =D
BEFORE YOU DO ANYTHING THOUGH (I don't know how many times i emphasize this, but I guess it's worth emphasizing), BACK UP ALL YOUR DATA. In the event you lost all of it, we MIGHT be able to recover some, but expect to loose it all if you just screw my warning over. Oh, and if you want to root again, use the pre-install method. That works well for lots of people (use search bar above to find it =])
Happy upgrading!
BTW if you want unlocked bootloader again, it doesn't come with this Gingerbread build (god only knows why). Just use pudding and you'll be good to go =]

The link in your post points to the official OTA.
It contains the new bootloader as a part of the payload.
This bootloader will make it impossible to go back to 1.8.3 SBF (or any other SBF) without the risk of hard brick.
For your safety, use Fruit Cakes or any of the ROMs floating around.
Stay away from official OTA or anything that does not have the new bootloader disarmed (or removed).

In general, you do not need to go back to anything to flash a new ROM.
Just back up your phone (through CWM) and flash a zip file with the ROM of your choice.
Most of the time, you will need to recreate your setup (download the apps and regenerate your preferred settings). To make your life much easier, I would highly recommend investing in Titanium Backup.
lol sorry forgot to mention the fruitcake part X_X made so many posts in the past hour or so, I tend to leave out information I've repeated over a lot of times. I honestly don't have a problem with the OTA (minus the fingerprint, but i think that's with everyone), so that is another viable method. So long as he stays away from SBF (which we technically should anyways) and sticks with eating his Fruitcake, I don't see what's the big deal =]
That's just my two cents on that matter. However, feisty_noodles is probably right about flashing ROMs, as they are usually well tested and don't blow the Odmfuse like the new bootloader does when you unlock with it. It's really your choice, but I preferred having an OTA (until my ROM-itis kicks back in >.>), so I just gave you the method I used.
Good luck!

Oh, and yeah. These are important too =] Kenneth made a ROM from the Gingerbread, so you can probably use that (make sure it's not fastboot images though! A lot of people (soft?)bricked their phones that way. And Titatium ftw =D

There is nothing wrong with fastboot images. I am running a stock from system.img (from Ken's archive) at the moment.
1.8.3 with unlocked bootloader you have 3 way to have official GB 2.3.4/4.5.91
1. Flash 1.83 "WITH" Pudding and then apply OTA by settings->about phone->system update
2. Flash 2.3.4/4.5.91 Official Motorola SBF, you can get this one by Motorola Software Updater or Development forum -> stickie -> SBF thread
3. Download 2.3.4/4.5.91 extract img's and moto-fastboot
Option 1 and 2 update the bootloader
Option 3 preserve old bootloader

[Q] bricked once..let's not do it again. 4.1.83 @ 2.2.2

I bricked one Atrix already a few weeks ago, and have since gotten another...(don't wanna think about it)..
I had toyed with unlocking it, and 'rooted' using the gingerbreak method. I was then, bored, one day and installed CWM paid version(Since I had it on my Nexus One, and it popped up under 'my apps'). Out of curiosity I installed the bootloader via CWM, thinking it would fail before it broke anything..wrong.. It froze after a reboot, but after taking the battery out and back in came back up. Didn't think any more about it, and figured i'd finish the unlocking/flashing part some other time..
Meanwhile the annoying pending system update kept going off, and I inadvertently clicked download... it downloaded, so I figured might as well install and not worry about roms since with root I was able to use the google adhoc wifi apk, which is what I care about most. The install was stuck in an infinite loop. It would 'fail to load RSD', if you took the battery out it boot to android then reboot automatically for system update over and over. I tried using the RSD lite program at this point to flash back to stock rom, and ended up hard bricked...
So, forgive me for being a complete noob as I never had an issue with my nexus one. I am at 4.1.83, android 2.2.2. and baseband 1.7.15.. Which of the many tutorials and post should I follow? How safe are they? Did I brick because I had a partial 2.3.x install, and flashed back to a pre 2.3 base? I've read many post, but definitely a bit gun shy of bricking another Atrix. The phone keeps bugging me to update, and I keep hitting 'cancel'.
I'd like to unlock the boot loader for custom roms.
I'm also a heavy linux user, majority of tutorials seem to only imply windows with RSD lite? can this not be done with adb, and fastboot via linux?
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1154600
I would personally go HERE Read through the entire post, then read it again. And go with the ATT 2.3.4 pudding+root
That of course is after reading and re-reading THIS post! (also linked in the post above mine.
Just my opinion.. and make sure you read and nkow what to expect!

That references 4.5.91 and unless I missed it, doesn't explicitly state it's backwards compatible with 4.1.83 and 2.2.2. is it?
Should I update first, to be at those levels and just know not to flash to an earlier build(pre 2.3.4/4.5.91)?

Nope, don't update. It's safer to unlock BL while you are still at 4.1.83, you just need to download the correct unlock file from the pudding thread.
Otherwise the unlocking steps are exactly the same.
The easiest steps to unlocking are here:
http://briefmobile.com/how-to-unlock-the-atrix-4g-bootloader
From there you can flash CWM in one minute.
From there you can flash any rom via CWM in two minutes.
Good luck and don't do anything stupid.

[Q] Custom ROM and Overclock

I have just rooted my Photon. Pretty happy with it. Wasn't as hard as I thought it was gonna be. Now to overclock it am I gonna have to flash a custom ROM? And if I indeed have to flash a custom ROM, do I have to unlock my bootloader? Or is there a way around that? Thanks for all the info.
There's a few threads floating around about unlocking your bootloader; id be careful though you could possibly break 4G. As far as kernels go, the source was released a week ago so you cant overclock until a dev releases a kernel. You'd need to flash a custom kernel in order to flash roms...
I rooted my phone and left it stock just for a few root apps at least until a new bootloader unlocking method is found and a kernel is ready!
Bootloader thread. Fyi there are ways to retain 4G just check development section.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1216097
As soon as android.git.kernel.org comes back up I'm going to pull in some source code and see if I can cook up a CyanogenMod kernel.
Cool appreciate all the info guys. And as for the 4G. I don't use it and it's not in my area. So I'm not very worried about that to be quite honest. I'm having trouble tryin' to flash a custom ROM on my phone as of now. I don't seem to be doing it right.
Okay. As you two seem to know what's going on. I just flashed the Laser ROM onto my phone. And the su binary is outdated. But when I update, the superuser force closes. Is this common with custom ROM's? I tried to ask in the development page, but as I don't have enough posts, it wouldn't let me post there. Thanks! Also, as a side note. I didn't seem to have to unlock my bootloader to do the laser ROM but the Alien one says I do? Is this true? Again, I know this isn't the right area. but it's the only place I can post. Thanks again guys.

Assuming you flashed the latest custom recovery right? Also there's an app in the market that helps with the updating of superuser if it fails. Its called "superuser update fixer"; maybe that will help as i didnt have that issue. Yes with alien rom you do but there's a guide that lets you retain 4G with the alien rom.

Thanks Kenny. I appreciate the info. I got that first issue with the su fixed. And I flashed the Laser P-Rom with cwm or whatever it's called. As for 4G, not too concerned with that. But I will see about unlocking the bootloader today. I appreciate all the info.

Overclock photon pleaseee
I want to know who's gonna be the first to post a overclock kernel for the photon
Cool Thanks again Man. I'm gonna try to do this tonight. But I keep getting caught up working on someones car or doing something of that nature. ha. But tonight hopefully! I'll post back once I do it and get the Alien ROM flashed.
No such luck, I can't flash the SDF file or something like that. and I'm not really all that intune with what I'm doing. So I don't know what's wrong and I keep getting a failed when I try to flash it. So I think I'm just kinda stuck not having an unlocked bootloader.
Okay. As I wanted to throw my phone at the wall but though better of it. And I really don't understand the Pudding thread. As I read through it. I used this http://briefmobile.com/motorola-photon-4g-bootloader-unlocked to no avail. I got a fail to flash on RSD Lite when attempting to flash the derpun.spf So now that I've come to a point of impass. Any ideas?

Was your phone at least 50% charged when you attempted it? If it wasn't you will get errors! Maybe you skipped out on a command? You should try posting the error you're getting in the bootloader thread so a few devs can see it. I would imagine many of them hang around their section and not general lol.

It's the same error that photon pudding thread spoke of, Tried to use that fix. Didn't work. And the rest of it I can't make any sense of. I don't follow it, and the stupid site I used didn't work. So unless there is an easier way that is more clear to unlock it. I think I'm SOL.

[Q] how to unlock boot loader and install roms (2.3.6)

im already rooted (used the old fashion command way)
i also need a good recovery (someone recommend the best one) ( i need to be able to do nan droid backups )
im going for jokers ICS rom ^.^
so please i need walk throughs that work with my version of atrix

model= mb860
android version=2.3.6
baseband = n_01.77.37p
webtop (not that i care) =wt-1.2.0-110_oly-6

i appreciate the help!
also what is the downside to this? would i not be able to use the official ICS update?

if ur on at&t !!
the best way to unlock is to use the automatic bootloader unlocker !!
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871&highlight=automatic
for how to do it, here's a youtube video describing the same !!
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=S6a0BWquqAc
also do some research before doing it !!
and be sure, never flash sbf files or use rsd lite after unlocking the bootloader !!!
i unlocked my bootloader using the automatic unlocker (but i was on 2.3.4[4.5.91]) !!!
Well i need to unlock that to load custom roms right?

It has been a while since I rooted/unlocked the bootloader of my phone, but if I remember correctly, I followed similar steps as these.
Currently, I am using CWMs Touch Recovery, can be downloaded from their site, then flashed to the recovery partition using fastboot, I'm sure you know how to do this if you rooted the phone via command prompt. Do a google search, otherwise and current recovery image will do find for what you need, but read the reviews before flashing, some fail hard.
Once that is all done, you pretty much are all set, CWM Touch allows for backups to be completed, flashes to occure and wipes to happen.
I would also suggest that instead of just sticking with just jokersax, I would also suggest to check out turls, also available from jokers site. I personaly find turls to be a little more stable, and I seem to have minimal issues with turls, but everytime I see an update is available, I still jump to that one just to see what is up, then I may or may not jump back down, only because I can
After using turls and jokers ICS images, I haven't seen any downsides compared to stock, CM7, or any variants of the like, I love me my ICS. As far as official updates go, I wouldn't be too concerned about that, unless if somewhere else documented, I don't think the ATRIX will be seeing any official updates, but if something does show up, there is a script available on this site to resotre back to stock, then updates should work just fine. This tool seems to do the trick, I've used it personaly myself, got me right back to the stock moto install.
Stock ics from moto is official for q3 its on there site ^.^. But i want is sooner. Im just worried the new 2.3.6 update might of changed something

You have to flash an SBF File to your phone Via RSDLite your phone will reboot a few times don't be scared
Then go to command prompt and type in command
fastboot oem unlock
Will give you Unique ID
Then type in
fastboot OEM unlock ############ unique ID
Then bam Unlocked bootloader
Make sure you use the correct SBF File for AT&T
And make sure you have A fastboot.exe file in your android sdk
To flash CWM flash it through the app first then flash it to your phone via Command Prompt
On command prompt type
fastboot flash recovery recovery press shift should auto correct make sure it is in the same folder as your Fastboot.exe
CM9 Bell Atrix using XDA App
thank you so much! how hard is it to reverse this? ( the boot loader unlock) say if i need to RMA it to AT&T or something...also what do you guys use as a recovery and or what do you recommend?
Once you unlock your bootloader - you cannot reverse it - its permanent... you can never re-lock it.
so no more OTA updates?
Not easily - it can be done.... Most NEW Roms are built off the OTA's and are better than the stock releases..... OTA's are not really a big deal. Biggest issue with unlocking your bootloader is that it instantly voids any/all warranties.
*sigh* i know but mine is up as far as i know and i am already two years with the phone....so im just waiting for quad cores...
i was able to return my unlocked Atrix to AT&T by flashing the stock 2.3.4 blah.blah.91 sbf. This does not re-lock it but gets rid of the Unlocked msg at boot screen
thank you ! that's what i needed to know!
so can i install a new recovery before i unlock the boot loader? which would you recommend? as i need to do a nandroid >.< , i did all this on my moto backflip...a while ago..and well....it didnt need an unlock..

Wrong Version?
I am sure you guys are trying to help out, but most are missing an important fact in his request. I noticed this because I am looking for the same answer for the same version as the OP. 2.3.6
The solutions posted so far all refer to 2.3.4 and do not work with 2.3.6. The one updated thread with a link to a site that claims to work on 2.3.6, does not list the Atrix MB860 with 2.3.6, it does list it with 2.3.4.
This does not work, it gets an dialog box error "failed to chmod file: /data/local/tmp", then another that says "failed to get shell root"
The one thread that users claim it does work with 4.5.141.MB880.ATT.en.US, but that's not an option in the script. And they don't give a clue as to what steps they followed.
EDIT: Took a leap of faith, man that turned my stomach ( this is my wife's phone, I don't want to brick it ). I can confirm that the latest link past page 85 of http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1182871&highlight=automatic is valid as of 03/01/2012 and it is what I used. Followed the OP instructions and then then followed the prompts in the script. It did unlock, then I rooted and flashed CWM, option two.
Its the same as the 2.3.4 way. I figured it out an now have ics jokers rom

I got Motorola Photon 4G with Android 2.3.4. Already rooted it and install Bootstrap.apk. I want to flash roms but I don't want to unlock bootloader so I can keep my 4G. So i dont need to flash SBF files thingy? And do i need to do Nandroid too? Also what are the some stable roms with working 4G? I heard about Rocko Locked and MOF 2.3.5ish Locked? Is both roms good? So i dont need to flash SBF files thingy? And do i need to do Nandroid too? Also what are the some stable roms with working 4G? I heard about Rocko Locked and MOF 2.3.5ish Locked? Is both roms good? If you have any tips, please do tell me

No, there is no SBFing required if you don't want to unlock. If youve got bootstrap recovery installed (it doesnt come in an apk so im not sure what you mean) and can boot into it you can start flashing locked roms. The only one that you can flash that is still in development is Mof's rom, though. But it is a good upgrade from stock and everything works swimmingly. To flash it, just download the zip, throw it on your SD card, boot up into bootstrap recovery and flash the zip. No need to wipe anything, the installation will do it automatically.

Bootstrap Recovery is an .apk file needs to be side loaded like any app not installed from the Play Store. It can be located by searching the term Bootstrap Recovery Motorola Photon in the search bar.
It never hurts to ask for help, Ill try to help
Hey there mate. Once i had first purchased my photon, cm9 wasnt out as far as i remember, or maybe it was, but it was in really unstable alpha's, but anyways, off topic. Have you read around the developers section yet? As you go through and get farther into the pages, you'll see less of cm10, cm9, and you will see stuff like homebase rom, alien rom, yada yada. As for all of the older roms that dont require you have an unlocked bootloader, i recommend you use rocko. It offers great speed, stability, and it doesnt look half bad. I dont really know where to start as far as helping you in terms of explaining all of the flashing process, but i will point you in the right direction.
When i first began flashing roms these 2 threads became my best friend;
This one covers about it all
This one is even quite educational
For visual aid, qbking helped me just to assure i followed steps correctly with his line of tutorial videos (he also reviewed some roms if you are curious)
I hope those links at least get you pointed in the right direction. It seems like an aweful lot to take in, but, its organised allowing for quick navigation and in reality, you only really have to skim through it.
If you have any questions, feel free to reply and il get back to you when im available, best of luck flashing, and enjoy your photon! :good:

unlock the bootloader and use a custom recovery. bootstrap isn't a true recovery and should only be used if you can't unlock the bootloader.
so i'd go with the custom recovery that way you'll never have to flash an sbf to repair the phone if it gets messed up from flashing locked roms.

As the OP states he wants to keep 4g unlocking the bootloader will kill the 4g.
