on every AOSP ROM i have tried, when you turn the screen on or right after a call when the screen comes back on... it stays super dark for about 2-3 seconds before you can see the screen.
is there some sort of setting to fix this?
it never happens on sense ROMs.
Try turning off Auto Brightness, or adjust the dimming levels in the CM/[ROM SPECIFIC] settings.

Just got the V10 and the second screen dims after 2 or 3 seconds after turning off the main screen. Is there a way to adjust the timing when the second screen dims? The dimmed second screen is almost unreadable because it is so dim.
Ditto, the idea that this is a replacement for a notification LED is really damaged by the dimming. (It's not just me that bought the phone based on that idea, right?) What I've found so far:
With the screen brightness set to 0, the second screen dims fully a few seconds after sleeping. Icons become about as noticeable as dust reflections.
With the screen brightness set to 100, the second screen follows the ambient light sensor after sleeping. Under bright light it turns itself up to the point where it's useable.
I've been playing with all the LEDs that Light Flow sees, but at least without root, nothing has any effect. I might look through the /sys files later. We probably need to get root first to figure this out.
On auto brightness it seems to be that the device adjusts the dimmed display for the ambient lighting? It's not the easiest thing in the world to see, but it's certainly not hard for me to see what notifications I have. I really prefer this over a colored LED.
Light Flow settings
For what it's worth, here's my current setup, now that the T-Mobile H901 is rooted. This does no one without root any good, and I don't know how it would translate to similar LED managers. I've been using Light Flow since the Sapphire (MyTouch 3G).
Light Flow device settings: check direct mode, root mode, and run every command as root. The Nexus 5 force reset option is checked by default and I don't know if that's relevant (no calls yet). Everything else in the menu is unchecked.
Let Light Flow control lcd-backlight-ex.
In a notification, set that "LED" to Solid and to 255 brightness. Check Enable Mixer and App controlled flash. With that last setting, the app will reset the brightness every few seconds even if the system dimmed it due to an ambient light change.
Now I need to edit some notification icons to be big and colorful. I wonder how this will impact battery life? Now the app is going to be awake all the time.
I've noticed that today on auto brightness the second screen will increase in light but not much. It also is not as smoth of a transition as on main display. It kinda jumps up real quick..
Yes for me I've noticed on Auto brightness the second screen will dim in a dark room and if you turn off your phone while in that room then come out... The second screen is still dim.... It's like th second screen doesn't respond to the light sensors at all unless the main screen is on.

It would have been nice if lg included the capability to change the second screen settings such a brightness or text color.

Another one of many things that it would be cool to see baked into a custom stock rom. Good stuff. I wonder if Cloudyfa might come over and cook on this awhile. I have always loved his stock Roms....

Color would be cool. A classic CRT bright/lime green, for instance, would probably show up much better than the white.
We need to get on their forums with these ideas. Maybe some will get squeezed into an update
An app which turns off auto dim in case screen is off would be pretty much help. Maybe I'll develop one.
Does anybody have a flickering display?
I like to dim the brightness in the evening almost to the minimum. Then it is quite easy to see some "pumping" (flicker) of the brightness, when I use the phone. It seems to be even more visible, when I turn on the "night owl" app, in order to filter the blue light out of the screen.

Any responses are welcome!
ROM: stock, 2016-04-19, no add-ons (yet)
I'm using a stock BLU R1 HD running Android 6.0 and within the last month, give or take, my phones brightness has randomly been spiking or plummeting before evening out into something legible. I also use Twilight(With pro unlock) and I have for years. I have disabled Backlight Control in the app. I have tried to go into my settings and disable Adaptive Brightness, but it will not stay disabled and turns itself back on as soon as I leave Settings. I've recently installed Lux but the problem persists. I've been googling it and all the responses I find are from 2015, give or take, and most apps regarding brightness have also not updated since around that time.
The frustrating part is that most of the time when it changes I'm not even moving and the light around me is not changing. The problem actually occurs more in normal, indoor lighting than it does in darkness or bright sunlight, and I've been careful not to cover the front camera, where I think the light sensor is, just in case I was the problem.
Does anyone know what I can do? How I can either fix Adaptive Brightness to stop randomly changing my brightness for sometimes 10 to 15 seconds before going back to where it should be, or how to disable Adaptive Brightness so it will stop turning itself back on?
I'd prefer not to root my phone, so please don't suggest it unless there really is no other option. I've ruined several phones that way in various ways and have concluded that rooting is just not for me.
If you've got auto screen brightness enabled, if you open up chrome, or Facebook, or certain apps, the screen dims slightly... Which is annoying.. Apart from turning off auto brightness (which I like to keep on) is there any way to stop it?
It happens even if auto brightness is off ! Very annoying and there's no way round it :crying:

I can't recreate this problem. The screen does dim itself a few seconds before your screen timeout is set, so that maybe it. Try increasing your timeout from the default 30 seconds under the Display options.

No, it's definitely there...think it's something to do with power-saving or to prevent screen burn-in because these 2 apps have mainly white screens. If you compare the screen of FaceBook / Chrome to an app which doesn't dim ( e.g. ebay) then you can see a definite dimming as soon as you open either one.
I didn't noticed it before seeing this thread. Personally I like it ^^
But I understand that we should be able to deactivate it.
Hello!
Can you guys test the auto-brightness in dark environments?
My screen flickers shortly before the auto-brightness function find the best brightness.
Unfortunately, I can´t make a video, because this is the only phone I have.
The screen don´t flicker everytime, only when the auto-brightness go under 20% and stops shortly before.
Is it a hardware issue, the new update or the software total. I have the S9+ since yesterday.
Do you have the "black crush" issue also?
I just tried it with mine, turning lights on and, off in a room with no windows (so completely dark when the lights are off). I don't notice an flicker on mine. The screen gradually reduces brightness, but seems to settle at the low level without any flicker.
Thanks for the replies.
I don´t have the balck crush problem. I tested it in Netflix.
The only problem is the flickering in auto-brightness mode under 10-20%.
It seems, the S9 Plus want to calibrate the brightness and after a few seconds the backlight don´t fllickers.
I tried to find a video in youtube, I can find 1-2 similar videos but not the exactly problem.
