This is probably a dumb question in the wrong section but are there any reasons outside of something like a locked boot-loader that Android couldn't be compiled to run on the HP touchpad tablet?
I was just wondering the same thing. The CPU is a SnapDragon so the hardware at least has the potential to work...
I would imagine that it would be quite difficult because you would need to build your own kernel and custom version of android.

Im not a Developer or anything but I would Assume that we Can wait for a Honeycomb Tablet to come out with Similar specs (I.E Same Processor and Ram) and port a Version of that to the TouchPad. It should work if Running HC 3.2 since it supports different Screen sizes too. I would assume only minor tweaking would be needed. But thats just me Guessing.
Sorry but I was thinking the opposite. I would kill to get WebOS running on my new Moto Photon!

especially now since ouchpad is dead
I think this is going to become a much more important question, now that HP is getting out of the consumer hardware business and WebOS is going to become unsupported very soon. I think a dual-core snapdragon would be more that enough to run 2.3, and the aspect ratio (4:3) makes it a lot more attractive to me than the existing 16:10 stable of Honeycomb tablets.
If the source code for Ice Cream Sandwich is released to the public, hopefully this can happen. For now though I hope someone will be interested enough to pick up a cut-rate Touchpad (prices are likely to plummet now that Retailers will be dying to offload them) and attempt to get CM7 on it.

due to LTE:
Samsung Galaxy S II Hercules
Samsung SHV-E120S Galaxy S II LTE
use the modem-less AP8060 that the touchpad uses. they would be the target candidates to port to touchpad. could maybe do boot ->boot like IOS jailbreak where you strap webos to boot android.
Since AP8060 is SOC (all in one) - good chance of this working.
I would put up some cash to see this happen... really would... WebOS is nice.. the Hardware is nice.. but AS IT IS... is as it will be and it just doesnt have enough in it for me to enjoy it. Not enough quality apps.. and what happens when things need updates to make them work properly. call whom ever you want ... no one is there to pick up the phone they have all be WFR by hp lol
I really hope someone can get Android on those Touchpads. The big box retailers are dumping them right now. 16GB for $99.99 and 32GB for $149.99.
i know its not related but since its being sold for 99$im thinking of buying it the only question is that does it run divx movies without converting
id donate $20 towards this
The 16gb in Canada is going for $99....well worth it if a port was possible or in the near future!!!
http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/19/let-the-liquidation-begin-hps-16gb-touchpad-on-sale-for-99/
It was possible with the HD2, with a little effort, Android will become possible!
someone please port android to this device!
What is the over-under on this getting Android? Is it worth a poor man's money?
I'm veerrryyyy interested too! This would be awesome.

Hope I'm not being sacrilegeous, but is it possible? I've always admired the platform, but the lack of apps always held me back from trying it.
Any possibility we could get WebOS running on the G tab?

Because if number of available apps is the problem, WebOS is clearly the answer.

the lack of apps is whats kept him from trying Web OS (ie: buying a web os device) however hes interested in trying out the platform if he could get it running on his gtab.
but you clearly didn't pick that up and made an ass of yourself.
You're right (on both counts).
Not the first or last time I make an ass of myself on the internet.
I doubt it, but it would be awesome. WebOS is a stunningly beautiful OS. I love the way it looks, feels, and works. To me, it's up there with android in the multitasking department and surpasses it in design (though honeycomb is getting close). I had a pre for about 6 months and sometimes miss some of the things it did. That being said, as of june 2010, it was buggy as all get out and the app store was severly lacking.
I second the request for someone to look into this though, as it would be a lot of fun to play with.

Hey, at least you owned up to it
I bought a Palm Pre the day it was released, I thought WebOS was pretty damn awesome, but they released it on hardware of the worst quality (my Pre oreo'd like a mofo, and the touchscreen stopped working 9 months in). That and the fact that they didn't license it out like Android pretty much doomed it from the start.
Nice to see HP giving it a go, and #2 tablet world is wide open at the moment, but I wouldn't choose it over Android. Would be fun to play with though.
CPU is probably the big obstacle - anyone know what WebOS is compiled for? I actually know very little about the device.
If, for example, the hardware was ARM based then it's in the realm of possibility.
EDIT: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Webos. hmmm, ARM-based and Linux based. Interesting.....

original pre was an omap processor, not sure if that is arm or not. I think texas instruments was the manufacturer
Btw I thought of this after reading about all the work done on the HTC HD2 and and HD7 running both Windows x.x and Android concurrently. Android Central recently had an article about WebOS 3.0 where they said it is starting to look mighty impressive.
I've always enjoyed Android and how customizable it is, but have enjoyed the UI from WebOS (one of my cousin owned a Pre).
Btw I enjoy using all platforms, I've been on Windows, OS X, and Ubunut for desktops and laptops, and for Smartphones I've used WM 6 (and prior), Blackberry, iOS, and Android. I tend to go with the one that suits my needs/wants best. Now that tablets are starting to be on the rise, I haven't set in stone which one I prefer yet. I picked up a Gtab from Woot knowing that there is a strong community of modders in addition to some solid internal hardware and specs.

I really have a hard time trying to differenciate between all these alpha/beta honeycombs. Im currently running vegan-tab RC1 and have no problems using CWM to get around roms.
Im still on 1.1, but what bennies do i get for updating to 1.2?
also, looking for a rom that has maximum support for BT keyboard, and mouse, USH Host media support, and the docking station.
Anyone wanna help me out and point me to the next Rom of Choice?

wait for the new Archos tablets...
thats my opinion
I love my gtablet but viewsonic has pretty much dropped support so youre not going to get much past Gingerbread unless some Devs have some serious breakthroughs
by that time though the new archos tabs will be out and who doesnt want a dual core 1.5GHz tablet running honeycomb??
It depends upon what you want. Personally, I stick with Cyanogen 7.0.3 because it runs Netflix and Hulu+. It is a little slow, but if you limit the number of apps you install, it works well.

Umm, hate to be the one to break it to you, but there are already several HC ROMs available. I'm running VEGAnComb on my G-Tablet, and it's very stable.
With that said, the ASUS Transformer and the Acer Iconia are both pretty darn slick, and way better than the G-Tablet out of the box. I bought my G-Tab just before the big price drop, so the Transformer is only about $20 more than what I paid for my tablet.

true but none of the roms have flash working properly and have their limitations compared to gingerbread
right now this goes for almost every version of HC out there on every tablet though so its understandable
as soon as netflix and hulu start working on a HC rom Im moving to HC
until then im sticking with CM7
Im trying to get vegantab working again with hulu and netflix, if I can do that and get a good zip file I will share and would definitely recommend using Vegan-Tab Ginger Edition... best ROM so far imo

Actually, you need to check the Bottle of Smoke and Flashback threads. Flash is working in the latest Opera.
ive checked out the threads and i thought it was flash in any browser.
so is it only in the stock browser that its not working right?
I also know you cant play HD youtube vids and other HD vids which I can do with CM7...
and still no netflix
The ASUS Transformer is cool, but it is not a compelling upgrade from a G-Tablet.
Both are 1GHz Tegra 2's. I have the Malata Dock and a Mini-USB keyboard, so essentially I have everything the Transformer has. (I have Wired Ethernet, which AFAIK even the Transformer with the Keyboard Dock does not).
If you want Honeycomb just to say you have Honeycomb, there are several HC firmwares on this forum.
If you want a FW that works, and has many Tablet/HC features, there are plenty of those, including a Cyanogen 7.1.0 official release that's just around the corner.
I'm not knocking the ASUS. It's really, really nice, and probably the coolest computing device out there right now. But unless you really just have too much money in your pocket, it's just not different enough to warrant being called an upgrade from a G-Tablet IMHO.
Thats what I was thinking until I got the Asus Things the gtablet will never have
-decent screen
-1gb ram
-gps
Plus HC is stable out of the box I never got it stable with the alphas. While I had some froyo builds that were fairly stable it was still less stable than the ASUS.
True, but you paid much, much more than I did for my gtab. My Lexus is also much nicer than a Toyota.
Only because its the 32GB model I returned a present at Fry's and had $108 credit. Plus whatever the gtablet sells for. So it cost about $300. Would have been $200 for the 16GB model. It cost me $400 for the gtablet.

Think about it this way. The Japanese people don't buy any car that's not Japanese made. That's why American companies can't sell in Japan. And it's a pretty darn big market over there.
Americans, on the other hand, are dumbasses that would rather buy foreign cars because they hate America. They go out and buy drugs to pocket those foreign drug lords. Heck, they don't even vote.
My philosophy is simple. I live in America. I'm an American citizen. My siblings and I are all engineers working for American engineering firms building everything from bridges to construction machineries to softwares that run them. I live and work here. And I love my fellow Americans. Why on Earth would I want to put my hard earned money in the pockets of foreigners who hate America?
Sure, I buy foreign stuff, but only insignificant things like my nephew's toys and the gtab. I find it sad that nowadays it's so goddamn hard to find computer parts not made in China... the same Chinese that regularly hack into our systems to steal technology.

WebOS is a perfectly ****ty OS imo. My friend in R&D told me about the KNOWN memory leak in the webOS browser and causes system instability and the scroll issue. Also how the kernel for the Touchpad does not function properly with Dual-cores but was still released.....
There are MANY bugs with this product. There is also a 7" version of the HP Touchpad I have here that was never released.

Why would they consider anandroid tablet? Simple, webos was a complete and total failure they wasted over a billion dollars on. I'm not making a statement about the quality of the software. I'm personally less than impressed with it but that's not the point. Lets just assume its the most amazing OS ever made and makes both iOS and Android look like a Commodore Vic 20 in comparison. Honestly, its all opinion. Lets stick to facts. Best Buy ordered hundreds of thousands. They sold around 20,000 before the firesale. The facts are no one bought them and no one developed for them. With no apps,no userbase and a warehouse full of product,it was looking pretty grim. Maybe they could have made a go of it but more likely it wouldn't have been life support for a few years and then finally put out of its misery.
If HP still wants to be in the tablet market,Android would not be a bad way to go. In fact, dropping webos and releasing android for the touchpad would not have been too bad of idea rather than the firesale.

Hi
I have a touchpad with cm7 a2.1 and love it. Not many issues
I love it so much I have thought well would a new tab made with android in mind give me more?
I know it would have honeycomb so I could have some HD apps which doesn't concern me much I'm more thinking hardware and speed
Would I get a faster tab with a better screen?
I love my touchpad I love CM but I want more now lol
Would a new tab do that for me or not really. Please forgive my ignorance

The high-end tablets, I suspect, would give better resolution and native Honeycomb. But do you need those? For <$300, I think the Touchpad is the best you can get...it's better, overall, than a friend's stock $700 Toshiba
For a second, I thought about the possibility of having just CM7 on the TouchPad.
Or possibly just CM9 when it comes out. The next tablet I was looking into getting was the Samsung Galaxy 7.0.
What do you think?
I managed to sell my touchpad for 400 in the caribbean.
I'll get a transformer prime.
It was good while it lasted.
That's excellent- how did you do that?

I would pass. Hardware wise, existing Honeycomb tablets are on par with the touchpad (In fact, the HTC Jetstream which just came out has the EXACT SAME CPU as the touchpad), only notable improvement being a slightly higher screen resolution (1024x768 vs 1280x800). For now they might provide a better user experience since they have hardware accelerated honeycomb while we have an alpha of software rendered Gingerbread, but that will all change with CM9/ICS.
The question is not is any other tablet better, but is it £$400-600 better?

you have a touchpad. It will get better and better and all you have to do is wait. CM7 alpha 3 is right around the corner fixes the worst of the issues with alpha2 . ICS will be out around January. Once we get ICS,the to will be as good as any of its competition. The touchpad has solid hardware,we are just waiting on software and the cm team is doing an amazing job.
The Archos G9 is pretty cheap.
Actually I just went town and brought my HP TouchPad with me. I tried every single tablet- the Kindle Fire, the iPad 2, and the Blackberry Playbook- all the Droids- and none of them were as good as the TouchPad.
I have a video if you want to see it.
Please do upload the video for us, thank you
but is it sure we will get ICS for Touchpad? did the CM team announce it quite official?

Too early to say if it will have ICS, but the specs pretty much support it. 1.5ghz single core, 1gb ddr2.
Really going to depend on HTC if you get the 3G version or the CDMA View but I don't think you guys have CDMA across the pond.
IMO, nothing out there matches the Flyer/Flyer3G/Evo View for the price in 7" tablets. But CES 2012 may bring new stuff.

So how do you find it?
Is it worth the money?
Is the hardware relatively good considering the new batch of dual cores tablets etc?
Did you put Honeycomb on it?

Its worth the money to me. I've wanted one since they were first released, but couldn't justify the high price tag at the time. I specifically wanted to be able to use the stylus for note-taking etc, so 10" quad-core tablets etc without stylus input wouldn't suit my needs.
I have LeeDroid's honeycomb ROM on it. Works great, and its nice to be able to use the stylus everywhere instead of just in the notes app.
I have no regrets regarding my purchase at all.

i got a wifi-flyer and got hc on it right now. i primarily got it to upgrade my old elocitya7(7") since i could not get hc on it working properly. you cannot compare to a quadcore tablet although it has stylus. the OS is now acting very different, and HTC has always made the OS weak because of resource issues and their launcher is still not perfect.
but generally ok, but unless its £179, its probably not the best buy.
if you do not want stylus capabilities, and still want a 7", you should look at Acer a100. its priced around the same level.
i am a little fan of htc widgets and always been so thats kinda second reason to get a 7" htc instead of tegra2 7" acer.
but the stylus is a nice addon, i tried it and appreciate having it now.
