Has anyone successfully used an external portable hard drive with their tab? I have read that the tab does not supply enough voltage through the usb port to power an external unless it is self powered, but i have also read threads where people claim to have used one successfully. Anyone have success, and and if so what drive are you using?
So far all 3 of my western digital passport drives do not work, and but on my wife's Acer Iconia A500 they are at least recognized and powered by her tab. Unfortunately her tab then restarts and hangs on the android logo.

I have looked around on here and cant find an answer....
My friend just bought a A101. He used a external hard drive once (Seagate Portable Drive, 500GB) After he connected it the first time, it has never worked since....
Does anyone know what would cause this, or how to fix it? He even has already reformatted both and did a factory reset on the A101...
Thanks for any help
Hi,
that happened some of us when we upgraded to FM 2.071.
I called Archos and advised me to send it for repair.
Regards.
Javier-
Did they say they would charge you for it? Have you sent it in yet or received it back? Just ordered a Seagate 500gb HD and now I'm a little worried.

I had the same issue, sent it in for repair, came back faster then ever, but now looking at same problem
This sounds more like an underpowered usb port, rather than a failed usb port.
The usb port only supplies 200ma power, most hdd require 500ma, especially if you are powering said hdd off the port.
I suggest installing SDE, then installing UrukDroid 1.0, then look in the UrukDriod dev forum for Sibere's V10 kernel - it raises the ma from 200 to 500, but even then, it's not a 'complete' fix - the port seems to share power with the display.
Good luck!
Question:
Has the Seagate 500GB external portable HDD worked properly before it was connected to the A101IT.... like were there any problems whatsoever with it being connected to a laptop/desktop at all??
If the portable HDD HAS worked then you have a guaranteed FUBAR USB port, period! I actually had the same problem and I thought the problem lied with my Western Digital 500GB external portable USB-powered HDD because it was working with my A101IT for a long time then one day my A101IT couldn't find my WD HDD when it was connected. I then disconnected it from my A101IT and found that when I reconnected my WD HDD back to my laptop that there really was no problem with my WD HDD at all, it was the USB port on the A101IT! Also you can plug a thumb drive/usb stick with like 1 GB+ that has stuff like documents, movies, music, etcetera on it and if the information on the thumb drive still doesn't come up after you have connected it to your A101IT the problem is a definite A101IT USB Port problem.
P.S. - By the way, reformatting the entire A101IT AND upgrading/downgrading to a newer/older firmware will also not work.
usb problem

Hi,
I am thinking about buying the flyer as I do a lot of nights and I thought it would be an amazing tablet for playing dvd's on.
My question is: I have a 500gb external HDD formatted with NTFS. If I bought a micro usb to micro usb cable, would I be able to plug it into the flyer and play my dvd's? I have ripped them to AVI files and are arround 1gb each?
Also would I be able to run it of power at the same time?
Doubtful. I haven't tried myself but most mobile devices aren't set up to allow their usb port to function with external storage... I could however be wrong. Take ur hdd into a store and give it a shot. Worth a try...

1. The Flyer has no standard micro usb jack! HTC use the same port as HDI output but you can connect the provided USB (not micro) cable.
2. As already said, you need the drivers on the Flyer to do so and I didn't check it. Maybe someone else?
3. You can connect the Flyer in other ways to external storage such as media servers (over WiFi).
Sounds a bit much for what I want to do! I am also considering the Dell Inspiron mini 10.1 which has a flip arround 10" touch screen!
.
Have a look at this thread.
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=46483
You dont even have to mod the device, just put in a 500GB drive and install ESfile Explorer and it streams all your media files (encoded for the Flyer of course).
OH, BTW, works fine with my A70 AND my Flyer...
Interesting, but I'd admit that I was checking out the videos on the Dell 10" touch screen, it looked so awsome that I went and ordered one. Average price seemed to be £480, but then I found an next day delivery from amazon for £407! So gone for that instead. In my opinion best of both worlds.
For my the flyer looked amazing but didn't have all the functionality I needed!
Cheers for your help guys!
Hi all
I have a galaxy tab 10.1 standard not rooted with a usb adaptor kit. I first tried to connect a seagate 2TB external expansion desktop hard drive with its own power supply and at first the tab had found it,it showed up as a mini sd symble in the notification and said that it needed to be formatted. I can not remember exactly what it said because it only displayed it twice then never seen the discription again. I also tried to connect a samsung S2 portable 1TB hard drive, when i connected this drive the notification was a usb symble and said high powered usb divice that needs to have power supply.
This is what i have tried with the seagate i reformatted it in FAT32 also in smaller partitions of 150GB and even cnnected it through a powered usb hub even though it had its own power supply.
This is what i have tried with the Samsung S2- 1TB Portable without its own power supply, i have reformatted to FAT32, i have partitioned in smaller 100GB partitions,i have also connected through a powered usb hub and it still comes up with high powered usb device that needs a power supply.
And this is what i have done to the tab, i have done the hard reset, but what i also want to know is that when you are in the reboot mode should i be also erasing the cach memory partition as well as the user memory or should i not play with the cach partition, not shore.
I would really apreciate any help at all on this matter.
Thank you,
Deanosc.
Hello
I'm currently using a sony tablet, and considering to replace it with the Prime ... My main concerned is about USB support. I cannot find any clear answer to the following question : Is the prime supporting USB self powered external drives ? directly on the tablet or through the dock?
I'm owning a Iomega 1To external portable drive, formated into NTFS, and I really want to use it when I'm travelling.
Thanks in advance for your feedback
Yup, I use a USB powered 1TB external drive with mine and all works fine!
i have plugged several NTFS formatted usb harddrives into my prime dock and was able to browse the files.
Cant guarantee it will work with yours but it did with mine.
Thanks for your replies !
Were the disks 2.5 self powered or with an external power supply ?
I tried it successfully with a selfpowered 2.5" disk.
Hey, I have the original Samsung USB adapter and I know I can connect USB flash drives, keyboards, mouses, joysticks.... How about an external hard drive? When I connect my 250 GB hard drive the Tab says that is needs high power, but I thought, is there any kernel that allows me to supply high power?
A friend of me told me that he can connect an external hard drive to his iPad 2...
A friend of mine told me I can connect a computer to his Ipad..Oh wait, we can do that already.
Most HDD's that come with 450GB and above already have an attached power supply, the mini HDD's that are 300GB don't need a power supply as it is already been supplied.
Some external hdds with just one usb-connector sometimes need more than 500mA and it looks like the galaxy tab 10.1 just can deliver 500mA (as this is the usb2.0-standard -> https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/USB)
