I have looked around on here and cant find an answer....
My friend just bought a A101. He used a external hard drive once (Seagate Portable Drive, 500GB) After he connected it the first time, it has never worked since....
Does anyone know what would cause this, or how to fix it? He even has already reformatted both and did a factory reset on the A101...
Thanks for any help
Hi,
that happened some of us when we upgraded to FM 2.071.
I called Archos and advised me to send it for repair.
Regards.
Javier-
Did they say they would charge you for it? Have you sent it in yet or received it back? Just ordered a Seagate 500gb HD and now I'm a little worried.

I had the same issue, sent it in for repair, came back faster then ever, but now looking at same problem
This sounds more like an underpowered usb port, rather than a failed usb port.
The usb port only supplies 200ma power, most hdd require 500ma, especially if you are powering said hdd off the port.
I suggest installing SDE, then installing UrukDroid 1.0, then look in the UrukDriod dev forum for Sibere's V10 kernel - it raises the ma from 200 to 500, but even then, it's not a 'complete' fix - the port seems to share power with the display.
Good luck!
Question:
Has the Seagate 500GB external portable HDD worked properly before it was connected to the A101IT.... like were there any problems whatsoever with it being connected to a laptop/desktop at all??
If the portable HDD HAS worked then you have a guaranteed FUBAR USB port, period! I actually had the same problem and I thought the problem lied with my Western Digital 500GB external portable USB-powered HDD because it was working with my A101IT for a long time then one day my A101IT couldn't find my WD HDD when it was connected. I then disconnected it from my A101IT and found that when I reconnected my WD HDD back to my laptop that there really was no problem with my WD HDD at all, it was the USB port on the A101IT! Also you can plug a thumb drive/usb stick with like 1 GB+ that has stuff like documents, movies, music, etcetera on it and if the information on the thumb drive still doesn't come up after you have connected it to your A101IT the problem is a definite A101IT USB Port problem.
P.S. - By the way, reformatting the entire A101IT AND upgrading/downgrading to a newer/older firmware will also not work.

Hi guys,
Just found my A70 can't connect to the USB Storage via OTG cable. Seems not detect. Have you meet this kinds of issue?
The obvious question is - are you sure you've got the right cable, I have cables that physically fit and work for some other devices - just not this archos
Even you've got the right USB host cable, e.g. the Nokia CA-157, you may still face compatibility problem. Many digital cameras will be detected automatically if connected. However for other USB mass storage devices, e.g. flash drives or card readers, only a few will work. We all hope that Archos fix this in its next firmware update.

try to connect an usb-hub and plug your usb-storage into it...that helped me
a problem exist on this firmware with Archos 7.0
Archos knows this problem
see that with the beta firmware
http://www.jbmm.fr/2010/12/07/le-cable-usb-host-sur-larchos-7-0-fonctionnera-bien/
My bet is on power usage. If cable is working than probably device it self drains more than declared 100mA when plugged in. Even if device is rated under 100mA it might more than that when starting.
Just test it, I upgrade to 2.0.71 today, but the A70 still can't detect the USB Storage device...but it really very smoothly right now
Keep in mind that the USB drive needs to have an external power source in the case of an HDD, a flash drive should be fine running off the power of the device tho
Hi,
I am thinking about buying the flyer as I do a lot of nights and I thought it would be an amazing tablet for playing dvd's on.
My question is: I have a 500gb external HDD formatted with NTFS. If I bought a micro usb to micro usb cable, would I be able to plug it into the flyer and play my dvd's? I have ripped them to AVI files and are arround 1gb each?
Also would I be able to run it of power at the same time?
Doubtful. I haven't tried myself but most mobile devices aren't set up to allow their usb port to function with external storage... I could however be wrong. Take ur hdd into a store and give it a shot. Worth a try...

1. The Flyer has no standard micro usb jack! HTC use the same port as HDI output but you can connect the provided USB (not micro) cable.
2. As already said, you need the drivers on the Flyer to do so and I didn't check it. Maybe someone else?
3. You can connect the Flyer in other ways to external storage such as media servers (over WiFi).
Sounds a bit much for what I want to do! I am also considering the Dell Inspiron mini 10.1 which has a flip arround 10" touch screen!
.
Have a look at this thread.
http://forum.archosfans.com/viewtopic.php?f=63&t=46483
You dont even have to mod the device, just put in a 500GB drive and install ESfile Explorer and it streams all your media files (encoded for the Flyer of course).
OH, BTW, works fine with my A70 AND my Flyer...
Interesting, but I'd admit that I was checking out the videos on the Dell 10" touch screen, it looked so awsome that I went and ordered one. Average price seemed to be £480, but then I found an next day delivery from amazon for £407! So gone for that instead. In my opinion best of both worlds.
For my the flyer looked amazing but didn't have all the functionality I needed!
Cheers for your help guys!
I think this question has been asked before, but I still want to see if someone can answer me. I tried to hook up my 500gb external hard drive to my TP, with OTG cable and a isound portable charger. My hard drive turns on but have no sign say it's connected and can't find under folder explorer. Is it not possible for a hard drive? Also if I buy a Y-cable for usb thumb drive, can I watch movie directly from it? Thank you.
Have you tried StickMount?

Are you on cm7, cm9, or webos?
Also, are you sure the power source is outputting enough juice to fully power the drive?
im using usb host controller (found it somewhere here on xda) and root explorer, works perfectly!
but your hdd must be formated in FAT32, NTFS is not working correct me if im wrong or anything has released wich provides this feature
A bit related these software/methods can work with a camera too?

just ordered one on ebay (only an adapter from normal usb to micro-usb) for 1$.
Along with the otg cable u also need a usb Wye cable...the need is to provide power (plugged into the wall) for the usb hub (which u will also need ). Not Neuf power and the drives will not mount. Getting a solar powered usb hub cuts away the cables and detached u from the wall...I got mine on Amazon for bout 20 $. Totally worth it.

Hello
I'm currently using a sony tablet, and considering to replace it with the Prime ... My main concerned is about USB support. I cannot find any clear answer to the following question : Is the prime supporting USB self powered external drives ? directly on the tablet or through the dock?
I'm owning a Iomega 1To external portable drive, formated into NTFS, and I really want to use it when I'm travelling.
Thanks in advance for your feedback
Yup, I use a USB powered 1TB external drive with mine and all works fine!
i have plugged several NTFS formatted usb harddrives into my prime dock and was able to browse the files.
Cant guarantee it will work with yours but it did with mine.
Thanks for your replies !
Were the disks 2.5 self powered or with an external power supply ?
I tried it successfully with a selfpowered 2.5" disk.
can we have a list of external usb powered HDD that work with the s3 via USB-OTG?
Doesn't seem to work with my buffalo ministation lite, seems not to be supplying enough power.
I have several usb powered external hard drives at home, will post results once my OTG adapter arrives.

no hdd works, just flash drives and card reader with memory cards.
I have a Samsung S2 (?) 2.5" 1tb harddisk that works just fine.I'm quite impressed as both my N8 and ipod2 need a y-usb and an extra power source. It's a neat little thing too.
Seagate working here.

Which seagate model, and did you use a external power? Or did the s3 power it up

My Buffalo HDD works with the SGS3, but my WD HDD doesn't. The WD is powered up, the led blinks and the mechanism is turned on (spinning inside) but nothing happens on the Phone.
Overstraining the phone's power supply can damage the device.
I personally wouldn't risk it.

Check if your hard disk is NTFS formatted. Does the kernel support it? (E.G. Siyah does)

Both disks is NTFS formatted and yes the kernel does support it.
I bought one of those cheap HDD cases from Amazon a chucked an old 250gb laptop HDD in it and it works perfectly. Its formatted to fat32 as my TV needs that that format to work, also tried various flash drives, wired and a wireless mouse.
I have tried also with two 2.5" HDD's, one Seagate Momentus and one WD Scorpio. They both works, but only with external power supply.
We want a list if HDD that require no external power, just the s3 powering it up by itself

Its not really an HDD, but I can tell you my Kindle doesn't work - I wanted to transfer some pdfs to the Kindle, and, although both devices know there is something connected, they wont talk.

can you confirm if you have this drive running of an external power source? i have the galaxy s3, i also have 2 samsung s2 drives both 1tb, and neither of them work, they power up but tell me that my drive is either damaged or blank, however this is not the case as they work fine in my computer, my usb otg cable also seems to be fine as i have various other items hooked up to the phone, is there a hack or am i missing something out, regards.

Hi Chris, the S3 is not rooted, is this maybe the problem ? It works with memory stick, joypad but not with my powered external HDD WD/500 GB and I still don't know why.
HDD compatibility issues with S3
I have 2 HDDs, Sony and Seagate, both of which are 1tb. I did get the clicking sound when connected through a USB hub, but when connected directly, the noise stopped and yet the device wasn't detected. When I tried connecting my friend's HDD (the latest seagate model), I got an error saying "Empty or unsupported content" and there was no option to access it in the file manager( both myfiles by samsung and astro). Please advice.
