So here's what's up. What I'm wanting here is feedback, and to vent a bit too I suppose. The question... How's root treating you after the first week? Here's my answer...
Lead up. I got my 3D prior to release date via Sprint premier customer deal. Couldn't be happier with the phone. It was everything I expected it would be. Check my prior posts. My experience was sweetness. Then came temp root. Sweet. Got my root apps back and played around with oc and all was good. Tried the various speed test apps out there just for $hits and giggles and my 3D was right up there at the top of the list. More importantly it was running smoothly and was very responsive.
Fast forward to last Friday. Full root! The process went flawlessly aside from the error 16 deal most of us experienced, but that was easily fixed. Went with Clockwork recovery at first, then decided to see what twrp was all about. Nice. No complaints whatsoever. Was out of town for the weekend so figured I'd just run stock rooted. Here's where things started getting weird. While on the road I decided to play around with the roam control app (a root app) to maximize my signal. Seemed to work, then I noticed that 3g was cutting out on me. I thought roam control first thing. So I disabled the app and that did seem to do the trick. Now I'm nearing my destination and I need some directions for the last bit of the trip. I prefer Telenav, always works well for me. Except this time I keep losing Gps. What's worse is when trying to confirm that it's just the location by having my wife use her og Evo... It worked fine. No gps issues at all. Now I'm getting annoyed.... So once I arrived at my destination I bust out the 3D and go to Google maps to look up a couple of things and test it in a place I know has good signal and I can't even get a map to load. Again, the og Evo loads up as usual. I didn't have a whole lot of time to mess with it so that's just how it was the rest of the trip with gps and 3g... Spotty at best.
When I get back home and get a minute to work with my phone the first thing I'm wanting to try of course is to flash a good rom. I'm convinced that had to be the issue. So I pick one and go to download and I soon realize my download speeds have gone to $hit. I mean I waited 5min and I only had 1% downloaded. I had to use the pc to get the rom downloaded. Got it though, wiped and flashed no problem. Didn't fix the download speeds. This is the same on you tube and the market as well. Tried several roms and wipes... No go. Also noticed that when turned off the screen for the night, things like the clock would shut down to... Hence no alarm in the morning. Texts wouldn't come through during this time either. I'd turn the screen on in the morning and get text alerts from texts that came in right after I went to bed. The phone would also start roaming for no reason. Just a barrage of small issues like that. I tried loosing oc and some root apps I've always used (auto killer, setcpu for example) wipes, data profile, ##3282#, and called Sprint to refresh the signal. Nothing worked. So I unrooted and tried it all again. Still no. Finally took it to the repair center and all they tried failed as well, ended up having to replace it. Data speeds are back to normal and all the other issues are gone. I'm hesitant to root again until I get some feedback. I know it could have been the device itself, but it was working prior to root. In the back of my mind I suspect the error 16 deal may have screwed something up. Whatever it was it was irreversible as far as I can tell...
it sounds like something in EPST got screwed up.
Luckily nothing like that for me. Just lost the ability to watch Hulu
Edit: My YouTube ONLY works with Wifi. It no longer works with 4G or 3G
You had the signal defect phone. Nothing to do with root. Few people have had this issue. I did and it was prior to root.

Can you download from the market? Or roms from here? I could from the market, just took longer than normal. From here there was no point in trying. I left a rom downloading all morning, about 3 and a half hrs and I only got 32% downloaded.

So is that typical with that defect? For it to work for a time and then just peter out?
My phone no longer charges when off, fine otherwise but hate leaving in on all the time.

I know for sure rooting shouldn't do anything whatsoever to data signals, unless you changed something deliberately. From my personal experiences with 3G, it will get crappy at times and most of the time not reliable. I use a music stream app while I'm out and about and I get tons of pauses while I'm constantly driving around the city. Well that's until I get to a place that has good coverage.

happened to me as well, was getting about .7-.9mbps on 3g before s-off and after i can't get over .13
haven't bothered to try fixing it yet as i'm on wifi 99% of the time, but by the looks of things from your post i'll probably just have to get it replaced

Same thing happened here except I really don't want to go have to go get it replaced. Is there a fix out there?
People, before you bring your phone back to Sprint be sure to call for your data reset signal or whatever they call it, tell them things are moving slow and you need a reset or something...if that doesn't work then take it in.
Mine is working great after root and s-off. I also didn't temp root, and didn't even do s-off until a couple days after it was out. I get 1.4 down and .3 up. Good speeds for 3G in my opinion.

Wonder if temp root had something to do with it then? Did you get the error 16 message when you rooted?

Good question. That's the one thing I didn't try. Although I think running the ruu reflashes the radios as well... Don't quote me on that though.
I forgot to mention also 3G signal indicator doesnt show when its connected at 1x speed, 2G or whatever you call it. This is sprints way of having us think where always on 3G.

I have been using the pre-release eng/dev radio. I have seen my speeds in low-signal conditions improve a lot...from 100-300kbps to 400-800kbps, and in high-signal areas where the network isn't congested I have seen as high as 2.7mbps. I tested back and forth between all 3 radios, a lot... the pre-release radio came out on top every time, most of the time by far.
Your mileage may vary, but, mine didn't and a few others in development had similar results. I'm not sure if that means I'm using more battery--it doesn't seem like it. But I wouldn't update to a newer radio without some very compelling evidence that it would be at least as good.
I posted about this problem the first day of S-OFF and how to fix it.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=16130344&postcount=298
Basically you need to trigger ANOTHER hands free activation AFTER you call sprint to get past Error 16.
That will fix you lack of 3G. You are stuck in 1X. Display always says 3G even when you are 1x.
I think the first hands free activation occurs when the phone has been flagged with the security fault and it does not setup your profile correctly.
Some Sprint Reps might reactivate your phone in the process of fixing Error 16.
Very easy to fix.

I have been discouraged from the Froyo ROMs for a while due to the problem with calls being dropped but then suddenly they aren't dropped. I really like the Froyo ROMs though so I decided to try it again and the first day I experienced it yet again on CELB 3.6. It only happened a couple of times then 3.7 was released and I flashed that and it happened again on the first call LOL. I then started looking through things in the settings and under the mobile data setting I turned on National Data Roaming, since then I have been on several calls ranging from 20 minutes to an hour and have yet to experience this problem since turning data roaming on, some of these calls were in areas that I know for certain I had the dropped and reconnected calls happen before. Maybe some others may want to try this out and see if it helps you as well. Hope this helps some people that have experienced this as well.
Has anyone else tried this yet? And if so, has it made any difference for you as well?
happens to me all the time. kaos froyo, tazz froyo, celb froyo, nonsensikal froyo. Only at my house tho. i have 3 bars there. not sure whats going on there but i have learned to live with it. Wont be long till we are on 2.3 anyway. deal with it for a month. by the new year kaos should have a completley functional 2.3 rom. maybe without camera, but still fully functional.
I've been messing around with the national data roaming for about a week now. When I have national data roaming enabled it doesn't happen, if I turn it of it does. Try enabling it and see if it makes a difference for you too. It's located under settings>wireless & networks>mobile networks
will enable it and see if it happens tonight.
Same here, after enabling it I have had no stopped call issues. Its been about a week, so far so good
Good information, I think I'm gonna try it, but first does this affect my billing at all? I'm on my parents plan and don't want to give them a heart attack if I incur extra charges

It shouldn't but that would depend on what your plan is. If you have a nationwide plan with unlimited data and no roaming charges then it won't. I'd suggest checking on your plan first. Just a thought though lol.

I also have this problem happen on non-Verizon based ROMs such as RCMix.
The call says it's dropped, but the person on the other end can hear everything that's going on.
Then the phone rings you back, but in reality, they were hearing everything going on around you in the meantime.
I almost lost my girlfriend because of it. Immediately flashed away from said ROM. Had the same problem with Froyo ROMs.
May switch to a CM ROM now, if this is a serious fix. Thanks very much for this.
I was hoping this would be a fix - I upgraded to CELB 3.9 a couple of days ago, and turned on National Data Roaming.
Tonight I had the same behavior - temporary call drop and reconnect along with the same symptoms that usually accompanies it (speakerphone mode toggles off, phone vibrated, yada yada).
Confirmed through examination of the (uncompressed) SYSTEM_TOMBSTONE file in /data/system/dropbox/ that yes, the usual cause is present: segfault crash of the "rild" process.
Rats! I was hoping this might provide a fix... but apparently not for me.

Sorry ut didn't work for you.... so far now im at 3 weeks without it happening to me
I have still had this temporary dropped call problem occur just as frequently on CELBFroyo 3.6 with this "fix". And most of the time I'm in my apartment on the phone for hours when it happens, and it sometimes happens more than once during these extended phone calls.
Just as has been described before: the phone looks and acts like the call was dropped, I can hear nothing but the other person can hear everything, and then after several seconds everything is back to normal.
Oh well. Thanks for the suggestion, though.
Very interesting to hear others have been having this problem. I had thought it was due to my bluetooth earphone, because it used to happen to my wife on her old earphone with a standard cell phone. However, last night I lost my earphone and the same problem occurred while on speakerphone. Although annoying, most of the time I just deal with it. I just installed radio version 2.42.01.04.27 hoping it might help. Various versions of CELBFroyo (currently using 3.9) have done it. I will let you all know if this helps and keep checking back on this string to see if anyone else finds a fix.

Seems like its touch and go now. Works for some but not for others. I haven't had it happen to me in 3 weeks now but this hasn't worked for some others where some it has. Im using the new sprint radio now, I don't know if maybe it has anything to do with what radio you have too? I just flashed this radio about a week and a half ago though. Before that I was on the older verizon radio... not the one from july ota though... the previous one.

Thanks for the leads to the other threads. I had not seen them.
I have not had a chance to test with the current radio installed (2.42.01.04.27), but plan to tonight. Is there a newer radio for the Eris? Looking at the version numbers of some I have seen referenced would make me believe that there are newer ones. Where do you download these?

Finally I was able to get ViperRom flashed correctly or at least I things seemed that way. I wish it would have stayed that way because I just love this ROM. So anyway, I get it flashed and I flip on the 4g to see if I'm in business and from the looks of things I'm all good. I've got a solid 3 bars. So, I click it off to test the stability of my 3g. After downloading a few apps from the market and doing half a dozen speed test runs I see that Im getting less than half the dl speed I was getting on MeanROM. So, disappointed with that I flick back on the 4g to give things a whirl. Using the Speed Test app It takes an age for it to locate the closest server. Then finally after it gets an idea where I am I can't get a ping through to the test server. Ping status goes to 60%. and then fails altogether. So although my 4g reads 3 bars , my actual throughput is next to zero. So I've done a little looking around for a solution to this matter and suprisingly I haven't seen many posts around the net coming from people experiencing something similar. Those that can slightly relate suggest flashing different radios. This seems from what I've ready a nuisance of an issue to deal with and risky too especially for someone with HBOOT 1.5 S-ON. Anybody have any shadow of a guess why I seem to be experiencing these obnoxious networking issues? Am I stuck having to mess with that flashing radios business if I want to stay with ViperRom and have decent 3g and functional 4g as well. I sure would appreciate a suggestion here. I'd appreciate it tons.
Try this and see if will help your issue.

Success!
So wow, I didn't bother with the first part of those instructions but moved on to the ##3382# second part. Turns out as I suspected that first bit really isn't called for. I went through the hands free activation, prl updated, phone wanted to check for foresee updat.e but I cancelled that part. I had to change the cdma only setting back to automatic which in order to commit required once again another reboot. Finally after I restarted I saw that my 3G speeds are in the 2,200 kbs range and WiMax is running smoothly at an average 8 - 9 mbs down. On the high average for sprint I would say. At least in this area, Atlanta Ga. So yes that did it. Asside from.skipping the first step and having to change back to automatic from cdma only that was all it took.
Glad it worked for you.

I'm one of those people. I'm on my second 0003, my data speeds are still horrible, my phone has asked me 4-5 times today to set my time zone, and I still periodically get a roaming warning when trying to make calls from my house even though I have an Airave. I'm sticking with it though, I just hope my issues get resolved after and update or 2. Those issues are annoying but this phone is too good in every other way for me to let it go.

Data speeds bad? I am used to that, I'm a longtime Sprint customer, haha.
Turn off the automatic time zone under settings-->time and date. It stops the problem immediately. I had the same issue. No biggie now.
Turn off the roaming warning since I'm sure it doesn't deter you from placing your calls. Settings -->Mobile Network--> Roaming Guards. I did this as well because it irritated me.

Anybody else notice that when it roams and asks you to set the timezone, that the central timezone uses Central America time rather Central Daylight Time as an option? You can go into the time settings as mentioned by PsiPhiDan to set it correctly, but things will be messed up for half the year if you use the default menu popout selections. Not sure if this is an ICS or Sense thing.

Don't know what it was but there must have been something specific that caused that. I had that time zone thing several times that one day but I haven't seen it since. Just as with just about everything, the software on this phone seems a bit buggy. I'm sure they'll get it ironed out soon. I could say that I wish they'd get all the bugs worked out before release but that would delay my precious.
Alright so I've never rooted my phone or done anything fancy with it as far as that goes. Recently the ICS update was released and I didn't update right away, wasn't sure how bad it would mess up my current settings etc. After reading that it retained all my settings and functionality I decided to upgrade. Ok so first off I can't Tether anymore and my portable wifi hotspot does not work either, I'm on Rogers and in Canada, never heard of 'tethering plans' such as other people refer to with AT&T. I have my 4g enabled, can retrieve internet access, and as soon as I turn on my portable hotspot my phone is unable to access the 4g anymore, It enables a wifi hotspot but anything that connects to it gets limited connectivity and can't access the internet either. It's like the phone just shuts it off automatically. I used to use this all the time and was one of my favorite features about my phone.. If I'm unable to use this I don't even want the data plan that I currently have, the data plan I decided on DUE to this feature.. So I'm gonna be pretty pissed off if this amazing little update is trying to force me to pay for something that I already pay extra to utilize properly.
I could be wrong here but I'm pretty damn sure that the battery life has dropped by close to 20% I can watch the percentage go down while I'm doing stuff and it seems to be losing life a lot quicker now, and I noticed that after the first day of using ICS. The resolution on the unlock screen seems to be botched, It's very squished... My old version never did this, and it's kind of annoying for my background images and having the clock looking out of whack.
I'm not sure what to do, there doesn't seem to be an update and as far as I know the update has been out for awhile now, why hasn't this stuff been fixed, who can I make official complaints to as far as Samsung or Rogers goes? I've checked these forums a bit and people seem to be having a lot of issues, some similar to mine some not, some I may have just had the luck to avoid so far. Is factory reset the only real option to fix things, and will that even help my tethering issues?
Also things like browsing through Facebook can eat up 5% of my battery in five or ten minutes... I know for sure that it never used to do that. I don't get why the battery life would be effected so drastically, but even when It's just sitting around while I sleep I lose a higher % of battery life than I did before... I've browsed through various threads but there doesn't seem to be many options, is anyone able to respond to the issues I'm having?
Flash a custom ROM. It's easy, and the experience is much better. There are guides in the stickies on everything you need to do.

Like he said above me, flashing a custom rom would fix your problems. I'd recommend CM9 ICS. It's pretty stable and my favorite so far. Downside is you lose S-Pen functionality.

I had the same problem and found two possible solutions:
1- I installed foxfi and i was able to use the wifi hotspot. I still wasn't able to access the native wifi hotspot functionality on the phone, but foxfi did the same thing so no big deal.
2- factory reset. this option is a little radical, but as has been explained elsewhere on this forum, the upgrade doesn't clear some configurations that remain from the GB ROM and those conflict with things like wifi hotspot and cardock and several other things.
I had to eventually do the factory reset. It was a nuisance because i had to reinstall everything, but now my phone works great and I can access all the native functionality.
You could also flash a custom ROM, but I have done it and while they are faster and sexier than the STOK ROM you always have to give up some functionality and they always have some bugs, and once you start flashing custom ROMs you can get OFD and we may lose you forever... (I had it from my windows mobile days and I would flash a new ROM sometimes more than once per day)..
Root (flash cwm with Odin), do a factory reset, and then flash the rooted/deodexed version of the UCLF6 stock rom. You won't lose ANY functionality, and your phone will be quick as hell again -- or even faster.
Like paleh0rse state...
Here is the thread with all the listing for stock LF6; tools that may be required. Along with all the ROMs.

If you gonna flash a rooted/deodexed version of the UCLF6 stock ROM, no need to root before hand, just put CWM on and flash away.
Foxfi worked for me. But it doesn't connect right away to the Internet, had to inniate a browser then it connected.

XDA is no longer worth my time.
Factory reset fixed it for me.
TimOster; I did not use Klies, I am with Rogers so I assume it was one of their Roms, It was a wireless download but through my homes Wifi I believe. And I don't really think I did it manually, I got an update message on my phone one day didn't even realize it was ICS at first, but of course it gave me lots of warnings and obviously realized what it was before doing it, but I wasn't expecting this lol, I wish I had checked it out online first I would have seen all the complaints and just stuck with the old version.
I'm thinking about trying a factory reset first, and if that doesn't fix things, mainly the battery issues, then I'll try a stock rom.
No one seems to mention anything about the battery usage though, am I the only one noticing this effect? :\

UPDATE: Thank you guys so much for the help! My phone is running well so far! The GPS works well enough for navigation, and I should hopefully be able to limp through until my full upgrade. I can't tell you guys how thankful I am that you all took the time to help me answer my questions and get my phone going again!
what would you do? I have a Vibrant, and have done quite a lot of troubleshooting with it. Tmo's tech support said it's a hardware issue and that they've done all they can.
I've tried just about all the Froyo ROMs on it, and things seem to work well for a while, then it gets odd. I regularly clear my call logs, messages, and browser cache. I use wifi whenever I'm at home, and whenever I'm in the minivan I have my phone plugged in.
I am currently running Axura - Moped/FishmanMod v1. This has seemed to work the longest.
Lately, though, I've been missing phone calls...as in, no notification, no log, nada. I rebooted last week and suddenly had a voicemail icon...I had 7 new voicemails. One from my son's teacher. I never knew she even called. I've since reinstalled Tmo Visual Voicemail and at least now I think I'm getting my voicemails. Missing phone calls can't happen though. We don't have a landline, and we have a child with health issues. I have to be available.
Other issues:
*My battery died about halfway through the day yesterday, even though it had charged fully overnight.
*This thing is slowing down. As in, taking a photo with my phone isn't really viable. By the time it finally snaps the picture, my kiddo has grown an inch.
*Lag! I'm using Swiftkey X and it often hangs on a key for several seconds before finally typing it. It's very slow to open apps, etc as well.
Does anyone have any more advice for me? I'd love to run an ICS or JB ROM, but having the ability to call 911 is not negotiable for me. Woodrube and some others have given me some great advice, which has helped, but I'm still having some issues.
I could pare down the apps and use it just as a phone, but what would be the point of having an Android...and data? I need the calendar, email, task list, etc. to keep track of everyone.
I'd love to try to figure out how to make this phone last longer. I could upgrade now, but our checkbook doesn't like the idea.
Personally I'd Odin back to stock JFD and either do a reflash or pick a new ROM (bionix comes to mind).
Could do a fresh install of the apps you want on your phone. Your battery could be going bad and may need to be replaced, and if your sim card is getting old, you may need to stop by T-Mobile and have them replace it.
Not sure if that could be the trouble with your notifications or voicemail, but they are all quick things to try that should be cheap and quite possibly very effective.

Well, although it isn't too helpful to say...I honestly believe that if you simply must be available because you have a child with health issues, you definitely should not be tinkering with your device. True, my phone runs better, faster, stronger, and longer (ha daft punk) than it did running stock, but I have certainly had the occasional issue such as data issues, force closes, battery drains, SODs, etc, etc...it's simply a fundamental part of the life of modifying your phone. It's not to say that you won't have issues if you kept it stock, but you really shouldn't be messing with your phone if you don't have a land line and you NEED to be available for something so important.
Now, onward!
I will look into similar occurrences of your problems and report back..(sorry in class atm, then off to a meeting). Until then, Gl!
you could try and use a cyanogenmod based Rom. They are one of the best roms out there except you can't as of right now call 911 (some phones can and some cant ) also gps is semi-broken.

Thanks for the advice, but not an option. I have to have 911 capability, and we're pretty active geocachers, so my GPS gets used a ton. I've been so tempted by CM Roms, and my husband is rocking one on his One S, but going without 911 isn't an option.
After this last round of my phone's slowness, we did ODIN back to stock, then did the ((*^&^%$*&^) updating it to Froyo. (Yay!) We were hoping that taking it back to stock would help our issues, but it actually seemed slower. (And oh, the agony of using TouchWiz!) I very, very carefully added back ONLY the apps I used on a daily basis, watching carefully to see if there were any issues. It was crazy slow.
We then went to this last ROM and I added back apps even more slowly. I noticed that I had issues after I put the Zedge app back on, so it's gone. I also noticed that it acted funky after I put Google Goggles on, so it's gone as well.
I am not, by the way, storing any music on my device. I stream it through Google Music.
I do have another battery for it. I'll put Battery Calibration on and swap batteries to see if that helps. Good idea.
Also, my SIM is pretty old. I hadn't thought about seeing if I could get a new one! I know it solved some issue LONG ago with my BlackBerry. I'll see if I can do that at our TMo store today. Appreciate that suggestion.
I've been just about the give up on this phone altogether and just going with the One S like The Hubs, but forking over the money for it (not to mention that it would be $200 for me and $49.99 for a new contract!) is just not in the budget now. Might be getting close to something we just can't avoid though.
Try flashing back to stock 2.1 with repartition checked. Then flash one of Fishman/Moped 2.2 ROMS ( he has odin files if you prefer that method). I think you may still have some "ghosts" left behind from the last ROM or two you had on your phone. A fresh odin to stock with repartition checked should get rid of any "ghosts". Also when restoring apps make sure you restore app only, not app+data. Remember, after installing a ROM allow your phone to sit for a good 10 minutes then reboot before you use the phone.

That could definitely be it. I used to just restore all my apps+data with My Backup Root. I'll see if I can convince The Hubs to help me work on the phone this weekend. I'll let you know how it goes. Thanks!
Okay, we did the repartition flash, then put it on FishmanMod Blue 2.2 Frankenstein Slim. Seems to be running a little better, but now my GPS won't lock at all. I've rebooted, tried Samsung GPS Restore (never locks) and GPS Test. Test sees 4-5 satellites but doesn't ever lock on. I've tried Nav as well and it is not able to lock on.
I've checked our forums and I see a lot of fixes, but no recent fixes and most of them are for 2.1. I've tried dialing the *#*# numbers, but they don't do anything.
I sure could use some suggestions. I'd like to be able to use my GPS. I know it's generally an issue with Vibrants, but mine has never failed to lock on before. Might be slow, might take it until the end of the block, but it always locks. Until now...
Thanks in advance!
Go to the Dev section and look for a thread called GPS Fixes by Solisfiend. It'll be buried way back and I'm mobile so I can't link it. It has directions and app to fix Froyo GPS.
I have 2 posts in there, 1 is clarification of some things and the other is a download app you can use. Should work well for you.
Thank you, Woodrube. I'll do just that.
ETA: Found the link.
