[Q] Is there a way? 3g is crawling 4gis lying - HTC EVO 3D

Finally I was able to get ViperRom flashed correctly or at least I things seemed that way. I wish it would have stayed that way because I just love this ROM. So anyway, I get it flashed and I flip on the 4g to see if I'm in business and from the looks of things I'm all good. I've got a solid 3 bars. So, I click it off to test the stability of my 3g. After downloading a few apps from the market and doing half a dozen speed test runs I see that Im getting less than half the dl speed I was getting on MeanROM. So, disappointed with that I flick back on the 4g to give things a whirl. Using the Speed Test app It takes an age for it to locate the closest server.Then finally after it gets an idea where I am I can't get a ping through to the test server. Ping status goes to 60%. and then fails altogether. So although my 4g reads 3 bars , my actual throughput is next to zero. So I've done a little looking around for a solution to this matter and suprisingly I haven't seen many posts around the net coming from people experiencing something similar. Those that can slightly relate suggest flashing different radios.This seems from what I've ready a nuisance of an issue to deal with and risky too especially for someone with HBOOT 1.5 S-ON. Anybody have any shadow of a guess why I seem to be experiencing these obnoxious networking issues? Am I stuck having to mess with that flashing radios business if I want to stay with ViperRom and have decent 3g and functional 4g as well. I sure would appreciate a suggestion here. I'd appreciate it tons.

So wow, I didn't bother with the first part of those instructions but moved on to the ##3382# second part. Turns out as I suspected that first bit really isn't called for. I went through the hands free activation, prl updated,phone wanted to check for foresee updat.e but I cancelled that part. I had to change the cdma only setting back to automatic which in order to commit required once again another reboot. Finally after I restarted I saw that my 3G speeds are in the 2,200 kbs range and WiMax is running smoothly at an average 8 - 9 mbs down. On the high average for sprint I would say. At least in this area, Atlanta Ga. So yes that did it. Asside from.skipping the first step and having to change back to automatic from cdma only that was all it took.

Question... Did root kill my 3g speeds?

So here's what's up. What I'm wanting here is feedback, and to vent a bit too I suppose. The question... How's root treating you after the first week? Here's my answer...
Lead up. I got my 3D prior to release date via Sprint premier customer deal. Couldn't be happier with the phone. It was everything I expected it would be. Check my prior posts. My experience was sweetness. Then came temp root. Sweet. Got my root apps back and played around with oc and all was good. Tried the various speed test apps out there just for $hits and giggles and my 3D was right up there at the top of the list. More importantly it was running smoothly and was very responsive.
Fast forward to last Friday. Full root! The process went flawlessly aside from the error 16 deal most of us experienced, but that was easily fixed. Went with Clockwork recovery at first, then decided to see what twrp was all about. Nice. No complaints whatsoever. Was out of town for the weekend so figured I'd just run stock rooted. Here's where things started getting weird. While on the road I decided to play around with the roam control app (a root app) to maximize my signal. Seemed to work, then I noticed that 3g was cutting out on me. I thought roam control first thing. So I disabled the app and that did seem to do the trick. Now I'm nearing my destination and I need some directions for the last bit of the trip. I prefer Telenav, always works well for me. Except this time I keep losing Gps. What's worse is when trying to confirm that it's just the location by having my wife use her og Evo... It worked fine. No gps issues at all. Now I'm getting annoyed.... So once I arrived at my destination I bust out the 3D and go to Google maps to look up a couple of things and test it in a place I know has good signal and I can't even get a map to load. Again, the og Evo loads up as usual. I didn't have a whole lot of time to mess with it so that's just how it was the rest of the trip with gps and 3g... Spotty at best.
When I get back home and get a minute to work with my phone the first thing I'm wanting to try of course is to flash a good rom. I'm convinced that had to be the issue. So I pick one and go to download and I soon realize my download speeds have gone to $hit. I mean I waited 5min and I only had 1% downloaded. I had to use the pc to get the rom downloaded. Got it though, wiped and flashed no problem. Didn't fix the download speeds. This is the same on you tube and the market as well. Tried several roms and wipes... No go. Also noticed that when turned off the screen for the night, things like the clock would shut down to... Hence no alarm in the morning. Texts wouldn't come through during this time either. I'd turn the screen on in the morning and get text alerts from texts that came in right after I went to bed. The phone would also start roaming for no reason. Just a barrage of small issues like that. I tried loosing oc and some root apps I've always used (auto killer, setcpu for example) wipes, data profile, ##3282#, and called Sprint to refresh the signal. Nothing worked. So I unrooted and tried it all again. Still no. Finally took it to the repair center and all they tried failed as well, ended up having to replace it. Data speeds are back to normal and all the other issues are gone. I'm hesitant to root again until I get some feedback. I know it could have been the device itself, but it was working prior to root. In the back of my mind I suspect the error 16 deal may have screwed something up. Whatever it was it was irreversible as far as I can tell...
it sounds like something in EPST got screwed up.
Luckily nothing like that for me. Just lost the ability to watch Hulu
Edit: My YouTube ONLY works with Wifi. It no longer works with 4G or 3G
You had the signal defect phone. Nothing to do with root. Few people have had this issue. I did and it was prior to root.

Can you download from the market? Or roms from here? I could from the market, just took longer than normal. From here there was no point in trying. I left a rom downloading all morning, about 3 and a half hrs and I only got 32% downloaded.

So is that typical with that defect? For it to work for a time and then just peter out?
My phone no longer charges when off, fine otherwise but hate leaving in on all the time.

I know for sure rooting shouldn't do anything whatsoever to data signals, unless you changed something deliberately. From my personal experiences with 3G, it will get crappy at times and most of the time not reliable. I use a music stream app while I'm out and about and I get tons of pauses while I'm constantly driving around the city. Well that's until I get to a place that has good coverage.

happened to me as well, was getting about .7-.9mbps on 3g before s-off and after i can't get over .13
haven't bothered to try fixing it yet as i'm on wifi 99% of the time, but by the looks of things from your post i'll probably just have to get it replaced

Same thing happened here except I really don't want to go have to go get it replaced. Is there a fix out there?
People, before you bring your phone back to Sprint be sure to call for your data reset signal or whatever they call it, tell them things are moving slow and you need a reset or something...if that doesn't work then take it in.
Mine is working great after root and s-off. I also didn't temp root, and didn't even do s-off until a couple days after it was out. I get 1.4 down and .3 up. Good speeds for 3G in my opinion.

Good question. That's the one thing I didn't try. Although I think running the ruu reflashes the radios as well... Don't quote me on that though.
I forgot to mention also 3G signal indicator doesnt show when its connected at 1x speed, 2G or whatever you call it. This is sprints way of having us think where always on 3G.

I have been using the pre-release eng/dev radio. I have seen my speeds in low-signal conditions improve a lot...from 100-300kbps to 400-800kbps, and in high-signal areas where the network isn't congested I have seen as high as 2.7mbps. I tested back and forth between all 3 radios, a lot... the pre-release radio came out on top every time, most of the time by far.
Your mileage may vary, but, mine didn't and a few others in development had similar results. I'm not sure if that means I'm using more battery--it doesn't seem like it. But I wouldn't update to a newer radio without some very compelling evidence that it would be at least as good.

Basically you need to trigger ANOTHER hands free activation AFTER you call sprint to get past Error 16.
That will fix you lack of 3G. You are stuck in 1X. Display always says 3G even when you are 1x.
I think the first hands free activation occurs when the phone has been flagged with the security fault and it does not setup your profile correctly.
Some Sprint Reps might reactivate your phone in the process of fixing Error 16.
Very easy to fix.

New radio... Worth the effort?

Have you noticed any improvements related to the radio? Things like battery life and signal strength/holding.
I am wondering if I should take the time to re-lock and RUU for the radio update.
It would be so much easier if we had a way to flash the radio. Even a round about way would be nice.
I will try to keep up with this, and keep this post updated with the general consensus. It will be easier than reading through all the different threads.
EDIT:
Most are reporting that the new radio is a significant improvement. At worst, a few say that they see no improvement, but that it isn't hurting anything either.
I was wondering this myself. Also won't thus update your main version making it a pain to flash a different kernel

Anyone Worried About mainver Issues, Just Extract The boot.img From The ROM And Flash It In Fastboot. Doesn't Matter What mainver You Have.
Flash The boot.img First So If The ROM Automatically Goes To The Bootloader You Can Select Reboot And Not hboot.
Stocked and updated. Last night my battery was very impressive. I probably average 6.5 hours on my battery since I got the phone and last night I hit 8.5 with 45% left. I did use it less than normal since I was busy but I've never come close to that even with the extended battery. I'll be out again today and will be away from a charger for a good 12 hours so we'll see. Oh
I did shut down 4G, but I do work outside of the 4G network so my battery life comparison still holds water. Other than the 4G being turned off, my phone is set on Auto brightness. Everything else is running at the highest level.

Honestly, I am in a 3G only area and haven't noticed any difference with my signal strength. I live rural and at home only get 1-2 signal bars with db about -83 to -91 which is about what I had before.
In the nearest city, I get 5 full bars and db is about -53 , but never really looked at it before. I always had 4 full bars in the city though so that is the same. Haven't noticed a big diff with 3G either, I never lose it anyway so can't tell. Maybe when I travel more when the Weather warms up I will notice on my trips farther into the rural areas.
Wasn't really that big of a deal to go through the process and I just looked at it as practice if I ever have to RUU again.
I relocked and flashed the Firmware update and the first thing I noticed was how much louder it was speaking to someone on the phone. I actually had to turn the volume down a bit. I'm hoping this sound also translates to the speaker.
It's honestly a fairly easy process..took me like 20 minutes to do.
As For The Signal Strength Difference YES It Is Much Better. I Used To Have -75 -80dBm And Now It's Up To -65 -70dBm.

I'm definitely seeing better signal strength. It was prety good before but I'm getting strong 4g in some places where it had been spotty, so the radio is an improvement.
Not sure about the battery life yet. It seems about the same. I'm sitting at about 40% after 12hrs 40mins right now, but that's with 4g turned off most of the time and using juice defender. Not heavy usage at all-couple of phone calls, bunch of texts, some web stuff, words with friends and streamed a few songs (again, 4g off most of the time cuz none of that stuff needs it).
The five signal bars looks nice, but really doesn't affect anything important.
Overall happy with the update. Haven't unlocked/rooted yet so there weren't any hoops to jump through. Was waiting for S-Off but will probably go ahead and root soon because the bloatware is bugging me!

Am I the only one who updated the OTA on an unlocked bootloader? I didn't lock, update, unlock and I haven't noticed any issues.
At home I always had poor reception with my HTC inc only getting 1-2 bars at most and I returned a Galaxy Nexus since I was only getting 1 bar of 3g/4g. The Rezound however is 3 out of 5 and about -86 dBm. I know VZ likes to change the signal bars over time but at least its not flip flopping like the GN was doing.
So I have had the updated ota (hboot, radio, etc) since yesterday.
Fiancee drug me to the mall like usual today. Before the update I was unhappy with the Rezound for it did not get signal where my old HTC Incredible did. I spent many a shopping trip with no signal at all, and resorting to watching a movie while she did the changing room shuffle.
Well now after the OTA, I had signal throughout the entire mall, including 4g, in the exact same places as the Incredible did. This mall plays hell on signal (like im sure alot of big malls do.)

So it seems the radio is better at holding signal.
The real question... do I want to get the new hboot or not... New hboot means that s=off is even less likely.
Not too much of an issue with Dev unlock, but still prefered.

That's how I did it as well. It downloaded and everything. Unless it just didn't apply.
Nah, I had an unlocked bootloader as well. OTA went through just fine. It didn't care. Only issue I had was the frozen apps had to be restored before it would install.

Same here with the galaxy nexus, had to take it back because of the ridiculous signal flip flopping. After the radio update, I haven't noticed a difference yet, and I haven't placed any phone calls either to check the clarity. I live in a pretty strong signal area, but my signal is weak at work, going from 4g to 3g a lot. It'll get the real test tomorrow at work. Hope it's better.

No sir! I was unlocked, bone stock perma rooted and I flashed the stock recovery and accepted the update. I lost root but remained unlocked. I pushed Amon back on and flashed su in recovery and I'm good.
I did try to flash Tachi's ICS and I got the mainversion issue. I got back to my stock gb. What's the best way to go about fixing that so I can flash other roms?

There are ways around the updated MainVer... Scotts cleanROM is updated with the new MainVer so it will flash fine.

You can download the android-info.txt file in the developer section and place that in the PH98IMG.zip file of the ROM you want to install (/kernel directory)... or you can take the boot.img from that zip file in the /kernel/ directory of that ROM and flash it in fastboot.. via:
ensure usb debugging mode is enabled/and have the boot.img/fastboot.exe in the same directory... open cmd prompt. cd to that directory. then type:
adb reboot bootloader
fastboot flash boot boot.img
then flash the rom in recovery.
a few more steps... or you could read the guide on hex-editing some file to change the version back to the old one ( i haven't tried this. others have and they've been successful)

I'm one of those people. I'm on my second 0003, my data speeds are still horrible, my phone has asked me 4-5 times today to set my time zone, and I still periodically get a roaming warning when trying to make calls from my house even though I have an Airave. I'm sticking with it though, I just hope my issues get resolved after and update or 2. Those issues are annoying but this phone is too good in every other way for me to let it go.

Data speeds bad? I am used to that, I'm a longtime Sprint customer, haha.
Turn off the automatic time zone under settings-->time and date. It stops the problem immediately. I had the same issue. No biggie now.
Turn off the roaming warning since I'm sure it doesn't deter you from placing your calls. Settings -->Mobile Network--> Roaming Guards. I did this as well because it irritated me.
These fixes work until and update arrives!

Well for a short while it stopped updating my statusbar time ... but it seems to be working again. Probably since I dumped a bunch of apps.
I believe Revision 3 is going to be the default US version.

Anybody else notice that when it roams and asks you to set the timezone, that the central timezone uses Central America time rather Central Daylight Time as an option? You can go into the time settings as mentioned by PsiPhiDan to set it correctly, but things will be messed up for half the year if you use the default menu popout selections. Not sure if this is an ICS or Sense thing.
Hardware version 3 here.
No problems other than time zone glitch in the matrix.

Don't know what it was but there must have been something specific that caused that. I had that time zone thing several times that one day but I haven't seen it since. Just as with just about everything, the software on this phone seems a bit buggy. I'm sure they'll get it ironed out soon. I could say that I wish they'd get all the bugs worked out before release but that would delay my precious.

Downloads for Music apps and faster 3G

Anyone remember this little fix back on the OG Evo and 3D? Was wondering if anyone has tried it yet with the EvoLTE. Gonna give it shot & see how it works.

I tried it but I got worse speeds. It just depends on your phone. You can test and always revert. They posted a picture of the original settings.
Those settings actually gave me issues with streaming video like YouTube and made my 3G unreliable. I'm yet to see a positive outcome on the EVO LTE.

I had issues downloading apps. The connection would always time out. I switch back to the originals
I tried it today. So far, no issues, apps download fine, youtube streams as usual. I did Speed tests before and after, but with Sprints lousy 3g, it is hard to say what the results mean. For the record, I did 6 speed test runs before, and 6 after. My download speeds varied from 232 kbps to 1899 kbps down before making the mods, and 410 kbps to 1073 kbps for the six tests after. Doesn't mean much to me though as Sprints 3g can be all over the place, speed wise, as is obvious by the spread in my scores.
So, I think I will run it for a few days and see if it makes any noticeable difference, especially with streaming music. My main problem is that I listen to Slacker Radio going to and from work, and I hate all the buffering it does.

[Q] Reception discussion Western NY

Hey guys, I live in the suburbs of Buffalo. Notorious for Sprint having the worst service.. Everyone else is on 4G LTE, but we're stuck with BAD 3g, not even good 3g. I use the google voice app for texts/calls, I've been using it for years, and I plan on keeping my google voice # because I absolutely love the service. I have some reception questions however
- does it matter what radio I'm on? Are radio's compatible with other roms, fx: giverbread radio compatible with ICS? i'm on 1.09.00.706
- does PRL matter that much? I'm on 21090
- does it matter what ROM i'm on?
- please any tips/advice anything I can do to get better service

I'm getting horrible service on my phone, reception sucks, 3g dl/upload sucks. In school I don't even dream of getting reception in class/library.. I'm just fing sick of this crap reception.
I also wanted to mention, my buddy has a sprint iphone 4s and his reception is WAY better than mine. He has one of the same classes as me, sits right next to me and he's able to go on the internet, etc on his phone just fine while I get 0 reception! Also we go to the same bar a couple times a week where I get absolutely no reception and he always does. I'm pretty sure it's something with my phone. Also I want to mention this is my 3rd evo 3d, all with the same issue, they have all always been rooted etc, so I can confirm my hardware is not faulty, the phone is practically new.

I will be glad to help answer your questions. Since you are on latest radio firmware. GB roms are not compatible with this radio firmware. If you really like GB, you could always flash the older ruu's which will get you back onto GB.
As for prl, its a bit tricky. Prl's give instructions to tell your phone which towers to run off of and all that good stuff. Sometimes doing a prl update and or a data profile update can cure you of slow 3g speeds. (I have slow 3g speeds myself in my own home) but when i walk away from my house, it gets a little better. There are a couple things you can do. Since you have root you could open your dialer (you have to be on a sense rom for this to work) type##3282#. Under edit, type your msl code (if you know it). If not. Real easy. Download msl reader from googleplay and open the app. It will give you your msl code. No sweat right? Anyway once you enter your msl code there will be a list of option. Click on advance and scoll down to the bottom where it says something like htts or http and click on it. Once inside type these numbers in the correct spot and in the following order:
0.0.0.0
0
0.0.0.0
0
I forgot what the headings were called. Sorry. But if you enter these numbers in the correct spots like i showed you it will give you increased data speeds. After you do that just back of out epst and hit reboot to make sure the changes take place.
Now as to which rom you are on. Sometimes that does matter. Some roms have 3g speeds already tweaked like I had shown you. Generally roms that were built from source or specifically built for that phone have better speeds than ones that were ported from another device. (Due to moderator preference I cannot tell you which ones are the best) So you will have to test them out yourself. You could also try the v6 turbocharge script. Heres the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=991276.Please read the instructions carefully and get the latest script. I recommend being on a deodexed rom. Make sure you make a nandroid first before attempting this. The script will take you step by step. Also, wipe cache (not dalvik) before you run the script. I forgot to mention, to run this script I recommend smanager from google play. Just remember to enable the app as root and when you get ready to run the script, you have latest busy box and enable su on the script by highlight the skull and crossbone icon. When the script takes you to drive options, there is an option where you can enable 3g tweaks. Turn it on and see if that helps you. (just remember to do a superclean and restart when your done running the script) There was another another script by itself called 3g turbo if you want to give that a shot as well. Its located on the link I provided you. If none of these things work for you, you can always run the scripts again and turn them off plus reboot. If it causes your phone to freeze up or not boot, just restore your nandroid. I hope this helps you out.
