I've been making an android rom for my chacha, All Is going well apart from adding a file manager. I've tried with 3 different apps but none of them will install. In the log.txt from CWM its the first thing that gets installed but it just doesnt show up anywhere. What could I be doing wrong?
Get the file manager you like the best and pull the apk using adb or find an apk backup app on the market. Once you have the apk add it to the /system/app folder inside your rom.

I am looking for the stock samsung memo app. I believe I found it here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=10157669&postcount=1492
The problem is it won't install I unzipped it and and tried to install just the memo apk.
I also searched and came across this one. http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=811097 Again the apk will not install but this one had a odex I am not sure what that is.
How can I get this to work?
Your gonna have to manualy put it in system/app with root explorer. If your on stock rom you will have to have an odex file with it. The odex files are in the system/. But if your running a custom rom its probly been deodex so just push the apk.
Fear the beard...
I do have a custom rom Nero 5. I was trying to run the apk from my downloads folder. I just tried to move/copy it to system/apk and it will not move with astro file manager. Am I doing something wrong?
You know i dont use astro so i dont know. You may want to try to fix permisions in clockwork. But if if I were you I would just pay the $1.99 for root explorer, its the best app for root users. I use it all the time to install memo on nero roms. You know my girlfriend has a mt4g temp rooted and I cant install anything in there with linda file manager.
Fear the beard...
ok.... I have Samsung Fascinate.
PWGB2.0 beta3 ROM
I found the zip containing on here(XDA) somewhere containing the BuddiesNow app for my phone and installed it. I then found the BuddiesNow for Vibrant tweaked for the Fascinate. I went to /system/app and located my BuddiesNow I had placed in there 1st and renamed it .bak
I then placed the Vibrant BuddiesNow app in the /system/app folder.
It worked great. I discovered I liked the Vibrant BuddiesNow app much better.
*************
ok... now my issue. I picked my phone up ealier this week and went to use my Vibrant BuddiesNow app and it was gone. I then long pressed the blank screen and pressed Widgets from the list that popped up. I scroll thru the list and BuddiesNow does not show up in the list.
I then open my file manager and navigate to /system/app folder and BuddiesNow is not in there. Not even the .bak file version.
I then go to my SDcard and find the copy of the Vibrant BuddiesNow app I had originally stored in a folder there and tried to copy it to the /system/app folder. The error message pops up saying that the file already exist and cant paste the file here.
I then booted into recovery, tried wiping partition cache and dalvik cache.
That did not help any. Got same result when I tried to move the file to /system/app folder again.
I then thought I would be cleaver and rename the Vibrant BuddiesNow in my SDcard folder to [BuddiesNow.apk.grid] and then move it to the /system/app folder. AND THEN AFTER PLACING IN THE /system/app FOLDER, RENAME IT TO .APK
That did not work either! It also diappeared.... now I have BuddiesNow.apk,
BuddiesNow.apk.bak, BuddiesNow.apk.grid, all in the /system/app folder and all invisible.
I had the file manager settings to SHOW HIDDEN FILES from the beginning.
I also have tried the SEARCH function in the file manager but it shows no results. I have tried installing many file manager apps and attempting to see if a different file manager would show the files but none did.....
I tried to write this episode as short as possible.. this is the best I could do to cover al the bases...
what could be a fix????????? PLEASE ADVISE! I LOVE MY BUDDIESNOW!
Come one...anyone? I love my buddiesnow app. Please help me out here
hard to belive
hard to believe someone has not seen this before and has an idea how to fix it...
I love this forum anyways

OVERWRITE FILE is not an option to choose... in this particular problem with this
particular apk disappearance, the option to overwrite is not there.
I have had the overwrite option at other times but not now with this issue fo who know what reason.
I am going to factory reset I guess and start over.
hasn't anyone else had the same issue?
Not sure if this would be helpful but when I had a similar issue I just used titanium backup and found the file that "already existed" and removed it. Also, you can use any file manager that allows you to sort by date modified and look for any buddynow files that may be in a folder that you didn't think about looking in
did you maybe moved the app to your sdcard ? sometimes app's widgets wont show if you move them to sdcard. If you did so move it back to the phone's memory

I used the search function in the various file managers I have tried & even searched the entire phone (and also the /system/app )for he disappeared files and got no results...when I get some time next week I am going to sit down and factory reset my phone and start all over.
if it works I will not try the vibrant version of buddiesnow on my phone again,
I will just use the fascinate version of buddiesnow. (the vibrant version sure was nicer tho)....
I rooted with the stripped down ROM. But i need the stock email app in order to sync my Exchange contacts Where can i get just this apk? Thanks !!
Right. Download my ROM for example and extract Email.apk from zip file. Then copy it using RootExplorer or adb into /system/app on your phone. Change permissions to rw-r-r. Reboot.

Excuse my ignorance, but i can't seem to extract from any of the ROM's ive downloaded (can't find the link to yours if i click the ics one in your signature it just takes me to a long thread with no obvious links). I know how to use adb to get the file onto the phone, but cant figure out how to get it out of the .tar.ext4 file ?
download blazer rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746184
then use 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) to open the zip.
navigate to system/app and find email.apk
extract it from there (drag and drop it out of the 7zip window to your desktop)
then copy that to your phone ... either use adb to push it to system/app or use root explorer on your phone.
hope that helps
Hi, I realize that your rom says that it's just for Sprint, if I were to download it and take the contacts.apk from it, would that not work on my AT&T galaxy SIII?
I accidentally disabled it and am currently trying to find a way to get it back onto my phone. :'( *I already looked at my settings>applications>all and it's not there. [contact storage is there, but I can't find the application that I use to actually read that, after the disabling.//I raged on it for continually popping up on my advanced task manager.]

I rooted (using this method: http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-sch-i535-root-101633/) and ended up using the non-bloatware version and apparently the regular email app was considered bloatware for some reason because it disappeared.
So I tried following your instructions, but there was no "email.apk" in the download, so I figured you probably meant "exchange.apk." Followed the instructions, moved it to system\app, changed the permissions, and rebooted but it's still not showing. So I went back to try to install it manually, and it just tells me it wasn't installed successfully (and yes, I have "unknown sources" selected).
I am also not sure if this is the stock GSIII email app, based on the icon. Looks like the old yellow email icon to me.
Hi
Ever since I've upgraded to new Sammy JB, I cannot simply install any app by CWM zip or manually by copying the apk to /data/app or /system/app
If I copy the apk and restart it won't install. If I use root explorer and go to the apk location (i.e /data/app/) I see it has a generic android icon. If I click on it and select install, It the parse error.. However, if I copy or move this apk to anywhere on the sdcard, the original apk's icon will restore and i can now install it by clicking it... I tried changing permissions but it did not help... I tried full factory reset and installing another JB based rom (LS8 or LSD WanamLite or NeatROM) but I always get the same problem. Placing the apk on /preload/symlink/app did not work either...
Any ideas what could be the problem?
Thanks
Hi
I'm trying to move my security software apk file to the /system/app folder to make it hard reset proof. I renamed the original apk which is in the /data/app folder. I then copied the file to the /system/app folder and renamed it to the original filename. I then installed the apk, chose replace. What happend was that the app created another apk in the /data/app folder this time with a "2" behind it.
I'm guessing the apk has code in it that tells it to install there. So what I was wondering, can I set a specific default install directory, install the apk and then return it to default?
or
Where do the file go after the apk is ran, the program isn't ran by the apk because when you try and run it, it just asks to install it, not open the program. Could I move the actual app files and edit the install path in where the os stores the list of installed apps and there paths (where ever that is?)?.
