Hi
Ever since I've upgraded to new Sammy JB, I cannot simply install any app by CWM zip or manually by copying the apk to /data/app or /system/app
If I copy the apk and restart it won't install. If I use root explorer and go to the apk location (i.e /data/app/) I see it has a generic android icon. If I click on it and select install, It the parse error.. However, if I copy or move this apk to anywhere on the sdcard, the original apk's icon will restore and i can now install it by clicking it... I tried changing permissions but it did not help... I tried full factory reset and installing another JB based rom (LS8 or LSD WanamLite or NeatROM) but I always get the same problem. Placing the apk on /preload/symlink/app did not work either...
Any ideas what could be the problem?
Thanks

I've been making an android rom for my chacha, All Is going well apart from adding a file manager. I've tried with 3 different apps but none of them will install. In the log.txt from CWM its the first thing that gets installed but it just doesnt show up anywhere. What could I be doing wrong?
Get the file manager you like the best and pull the apk using adb or find an apk backup app on the market. Once you have the apk add it to the /system/app folder inside your rom.
How do i install apk as system apk?
I tried to paste the apk's with root explorer to /system/apps and grant permissions of "rw-r--r--" and reboot
but its still don't work..
Is there another way?
You just need to paste the .apk in the External SD card/Internal storage and Install from there. Simple. No need for Root Explorer for that.
Regards.
Alternatively, I usually just email the apk and then open it on the phone. It gives a direct install button option in the email itself, downloads and installs like any other app from the market.
I just installed Cognition S2 1.42 and it removed some of the system app like Social Hub and AccuWeather widget, so i would like to install them again.
In Cognition thread said for installing the removed apps you need to transfer them to "/system/apps".
I tried that but it didn't work, after web searching I found that I need to change the permissions to "rw-r--r--", I tried that ether and it didn't work.
So is there other way to do it?
Thanks for replying
Hi all. I was removing stock apps from my /system/app folder, and deleted Launcher2.apk by mistake. The phone couldn't boot properly, so I managed to get the apk from the emulator and install it using adb booting the phone on recovery mode.
Now, my problem is, that Launcher only shows shorcuts to the apps from my /system/app folder. Every apk I put or install on /data/app doesn't apear on the apps view. So there is no way to launch any app unles I manualy move it to system.
I think launcher must read a config file to get the installed apps, and it's failing for some reason. What do you think?
thanks in advance

Well just in case someone is interested in this. I'm creating symlinks from my /data/app and sdcard mounts to /system/app to workaround my problem.
I rooted with the stripped down ROM. But i need the stock email app in order to sync my Exchange contacts Where can i get just this apk? Thanks !!
Right. Download my ROM for example and extract Email.apk from zip file. Then copy it using RootExplorer or adb into /system/app on your phone. Change permissions to rw-r-r. Reboot.

Excuse my ignorance, but i can't seem to extract from any of the ROM's ive downloaded (can't find the link to yours if i click the ics one in your signature it just takes me to a long thread with no obvious links). I know how to use adb to get the file onto the phone, but cant figure out how to get it out of the .tar.ext4 file ?
download blazer rom : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1746184
then use 7zip (http://www.7-zip.org/) to open the zip.
navigate to system/app and find email.apk
extract it from there (drag and drop it out of the 7zip window to your desktop)
then copy that to your phone ... either use adb to push it to system/app or use root explorer on your phone.
hope that helps
Hi, I realize that your rom says that it's just for Sprint, if I were to download it and take the contacts.apk from it, would that not work on my AT&T galaxy SIII?
I accidentally disabled it and am currently trying to find a way to get it back onto my phone. :'( *I already looked at my settings>applications>all and it's not there. [contact storage is there, but I can't find the application that I use to actually read that, after the disabling.//I raged on it for continually popping up on my advanced task manager.]

I rooted (using this method: http://www.androidauthority.com/galaxy-s3-sch-i535-root-101633/) and ended up using the non-bloatware version and apparently the regular email app was considered bloatware for some reason because it disappeared.
So I tried following your instructions, but there was no "email.apk" in the download, so I figured you probably meant "exchange.apk." Followed the instructions, moved it to system\app, changed the permissions, and rebooted but it's still not showing. So I went back to try to install it manually, and it just tells me it wasn't installed successfully (and yes, I have "unknown sources" selected).
I am also not sure if this is the stock GSIII email app, based on the icon. Looks like the old yellow email icon to me.
I would've posted in the development forum but I don't have enough posts. I would like to add the stock mail apk back to the rom. I thought I read how on my first read through, now I can't find it (I searched also). I downloaded the removed apk's zip and put the mail apk on my sd card. I tried to add it to the system/data folder but it didnt work. Hopefully someone can point me in the right direction
You put it in /system/app and rebooted and it wasn't installed? It should have been... Do you have a pc with adb installed? If so, you can just push it to /system/app and reboot. Both methods should work... Or you could put the Mail+PRIME.apk in the ROM zip file in /system/app before you flash it by opening the zip as archive then re-flash it.
Thanks for trying my ROM out! Sorry you didn't get an answer to your question sooner. Feel free to PM me if you ever need help.
When I add it to system/app there is already a mail apk there. So I replaced it with the file from my SD card and rebooted . Now it shows in my app drawer but force closes when I try to open it.
There being a Mail+PRIME.apk already in /system/app doesn't make sense unless you already added it in at some earlier point. In any event, I would make sure you only have one of those in there. If there's somehow one in there called just 'Mail', delete it. After you put the new mail+prime apk in /system/app, set the permssions so it looks like all the other /system/app apks, reboot into recovery, wipe your cache and dalvik-cache, and then reboot. That should do it.
Thanks for the help, I'll give that a try
