Painted my Commuter Case's Plastic - HTC EVO 3D

Just finished painting the extra Commuter Case Plastic Piece.
I started out by isolating the upper part with blue painters tape. Then I spray painted it with Rustoleum Red for Plastic (wanted Krylon Fusion but I couldn't find it anywhere). Sanded down and repainted like 4 times. Finally I took some Brasso and gave it a nice finish. I probably should've used some clear finish, but there's always more time.
Comments?

looks cool, did u sand it first or did ya just paint it? i think im going to do that but im going to have it john deere colors, green on one half, yellow on the other

Nah I didn't sand first. The surface seemed rough enough. Just covered the bottom with painter's tape .

Well it looks cool, just might have to do the same!!!!

Yeah, I thought about that as well (mine is white)
I'm not sure if spray paint would scrape off or not. Maybe spray color and clearcoat on top?
Let us know how it goes
...nice upgrade from hero
I would hit it with some 320 grit sand paper, then a coat of Krylon fusion paint for plastics, then hit it with 800+ grit sandpaper to get it completely smooth, then a very very light coat of the paint again. You could also put a clearcoat on it too but that is optional. Also before every step clean it with 91% isopropal alcohol to get any dirt ,oil, or impurities off of the surface. Also be sure to let it dry thoroughly between each step. I did the bowtie on my Trailblazer this way and it came out incredibly smooth and shiny, actually pretty tough too.

Cleaning your Nook Tablet

The black felt cloth was pushed against my NT in my bag. No there are two black marks on the silver edge right next to the screen. Anyone know how to clean that off? I tried a cloth with some water with no results. Thanks, Endless.
I find I get the best results with Cascade and my dishwasher. Make sure you have "heated drying" on when you do it.

Sounds intriguing.. I may try some Oxyclean.

Seriously, I think it has something to do with the texture of the surface. I've had my NT in a leather folio for two days now, and it's already picked up the black of the leather.

I have been using a purple eyeglass cleaning cloth to wipe off fingerprints and such since I got mine. Recently I noticed some of the purple color had come off onto the silver edges next to the screen. I dampened a piece of paper towel with rubbing alcohol and wiped away. It took a little bit of rubbing but the color came off without hurting the original silver finish on the Nook Tablet. The alcohol I used was only 50% isopropyl. I would use it again if needed. Good Luck.
This gray microfiber cloth may be worth a try to avoid having to clean with alcohol all the time. I have a different type of gray microfiber cloth that doesn't seem to mess bother the gray exterior of the NT.
I've seen a couple of reports of folks cleaning their Tablet with the black cloth that comes with the screen protector from B&N and it leaving permanent black marks on the edge. One of them got a replacement from B&N.
Mr. Clean Magic Eraser ftw!

I use 70% isopropyl alcohol (IPA) and a soft cloth to clean/degrease my Nook all the time (3+ times a day) with no issue. 70% IPA should give you more cleaning power than water but be gentle on the plastic unlike other solvents like acetone, toluene, etc.
I used nook cloth aswell and it stained my son's bezel. I think it is because of this porous rubber coat on the frame. I have seen it before and seems to be very absorbent to dye. design flaw by Barnes and noble for sure.
Having this same problem. Got a case for my NT and now deciding to sell it on ebay. Took off the case to clean it up only to find that there are black scuffs all over the gray bezel that so far have not been removable (tried alcohol, lighter fluid, fantastik, windex).
Gonna try oxyclean and CLR and vinegar next but I fear it will not work and possibly make it worse. Wonder if B&N will admit to this problem and replace it. Probably the same issue for Nook Color but the black bezel hid the problem.
So I'm out of ideas.. I've tried everything I can think of..
alcohol, peroxide, oxyclean, fantastic, 409, wd-40, goo-gone, comet, vinegar, CLR, limeaway, and scrubbing bubbles.
Using an old baby toothbrush and rubbing on small spots on the back to test... but no success. No fading, nothing.
My NT looks like it has freckles and I'm about to ebay it anyway (Got HTC Flyer now) but really wish it was cleaner.
This is just one edge, but all 4 edges and the back look like this:
this would work, but i am not sure you want to do it, i'd make sure to mask of the screen just in case but:
some 00/000/0000 steel wool and buff that crap out.
The silver paint is really a poor choice. I've been pretty careful in the few days I've had mine and I notice a scuff around the volume button... I'm assuming from my fingernail... which I keep short.
I use eyeglass cleaner. I spray it on a soft cloth, then use that to rub off all the fingerprints, etc. Works like a charm.

I use the same for my screen. My eye doctor gives little kits w/ a cloth and a bottle of cleaner for free when you get a new pair of specs. Works like a charm.
Barring that I'd go w/ rubbing alcohol for the silver bits.

The silver metal edges on my Nook have also gotten black\brown blotches from the case (not leather) I'm using.
I tried many of the same cleaning tricks you did including dish washing detergent. The marks faded a bit, but they are still there.
I'm very satisfied with my Nook and plan to keep it. I covered the metal edges with scotch tape (1/2" is just wide enough to cover the area most affected by the blotching). This will keep it from getting worse, and hopefully someone will find a cleaning solution that will work. The tape is entirely under the case, so it is not seen and doesn't get tampered in any way.
My NT has the same problem. Does anyone find the way to solve this problem?
If you are out of ideas, you could use masking tape to tape off the screen, then paint it. Just a random thought

Glad I haven't had this problem with mine. I've had mine for probably 6 months now in a leather case and it appears to be fine.

From black to white conversion!!!

Today I converted my black 1 1/2 year old Evo 3D to a sweet looking white and silver. Wow 1 1/2 years already!! Well I found the HTC knock off with all the white buttons on Ebay, look for it yourself unless someone lets me know if I can post an item number or link. Well the battery door looks perfect and no different then the original white door. I decided to remove the metal front housing with a little pull since it was already loose from wear and tear. It came off completely with no bends. Watch out the camera button and 2D-3D buttons will fly off! I then cleaned all the adhesive off the back of it and the phone with goo-gone and some nail polish remover. I grabbed my dremmel and with a steal wire brush wheel attachment began to remove the black paint. Then I buffed it with a fabric wheel and it came out sweet! much better then painting. Not smooth but ruff and shiny. It mached the silver on the battery cover nicely. I then washed it and got ready to install it. I placed the buttons in place then applied brush on crazy glue on the lower half where the buttons are and then glued it. Be carfull not to glue the button or switch, a little glue goes a long way!!! I then pulled it back glued the upper half and bammm it was tight and straight. Wow it looks so cool! I love it! it cost me 15 for the battery cover and 3 bucks for the glue. I already had a dremmel kit with all the attachments. For 18 bucks I now have a cool looking white Evo 3D! :victory:I will post a pic if you like but you can pretty much imagine how it looks. FYI dont try to paint the black front face...it will just rub off like the original crappy HTC paint or worse.
Peace!
A pic would be cool... i might consider doing this myself

Ok here are a couple of pics....It looks shinier then on the pics. Had to use another phone to take the pics. The semi dark shades on the metal are from the metal itself not left over paint. I think its some kind of aluminum alloy or something. It gives it a semi ruff look, I love it cause it looks custom! Also the smooth texture of the raw metal feels so cool!

Looks cool, I'd shoot the metal with a matte or semi gloss clear coat. Will protect the metal from tarnishing.

Thanks...Everyone at my job loves it. Yes it will eventually tarnish if it is aluminum. I believe its some type of mix aluminum. If it tarnishes I'll just run the disc on it again and clean it right up back to shine. I guess well see how long it stays clean.

[Q] Sanding front bezel

So I have seen this thread:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1683079&page=1
Where someone sanded the back of their Evo LTE and I liked the effect (though most don't). My question is about the front bezel of the phone, has anyone tried sanding that? My poor Evo took a spill and I have some chips around where the black bezel meets the silver strip that goes around the phone and I am wondering if that black front bezel is actually aluminum too under the black finish. From the chips in it i would say yes, it looks like the black finish scrapped away a bit revealing what appears to be aluminum underneath.
If it is indeed aluminum my plan is to sand and polish the front bezel to hopefully match that silver strip that goes around the phone which I think will look great, even better than the original black if done right, and if i mess it up I will just paint it flat black and at least the chips in the finish will be covered. What do you guys think? If I go ahead with this (which I am probably gonna do soon, like tonight) i'll post pics of the results. This is my first attempt to physically mod a phone, should be fun. Though I really hope i don't screw this one up.
On an interesting side note, i just realized that I have been a member since 2006 and this is my first post. Talk about lurking.
The front housing is a solid piece of aluminum, which includes the band on the side. If you were to attemp sanding down the finish, I'd take the phone apart first. Another option, if you take the phone apart, would be to sand blast the chassis. That would give you a more consistent finish.

If you find some paint that matches the bezel. let me know. Its not exactly flat black, more of a matte semigloss.
Krylon Fusion Camouflage Ultra Flat Black is actually a perfect match.

MOD: Fabric Battery Cover

So I was a little tired of the bulk the neo hybrid added (or maybe coz of the same looks for almost 3 months ). I ordered an aluminum bumper from eBay (which is still on its way) and a battery cover (which i received). Here is the back case . It was the Angry bird one that i selected. But when it arrived It was a really cheap print job and didnt go well with the phones overall premium look. but it had a perfect fit and no creaking noise. i was not sure what to do next .i.e. if i should rock it as it is or just forget it ever happened.
On a second thought, Its a cheap case and i had time to spare. I took an old tshirt and some synthetic resin adhesive. Put the adhesive over the back of the angry bird battery cover and placed it on the tshirt backside down. and let it stick on for a minute or 2. then cut the cloth around it in a way that it had only 1-2mm sticking out on all four sides and wrapped it onto the inside of the cover and put a thin line of the adhesive running along the border of the cover. Its pretty simple if you have the right adhesive. the only tricky part was the camera cut out, which took time and patience as i didnt have a sharp blade, i was using a small knife instead and was too lazy to go buy one .
Here is the end result. (time spent 30mins)
The last pic showing the inside might look like the wrapped in fabric is going to come off, but i can assure you that it is stuck pretty well and feels solid. Now that is one custom case
What do you guys think?
Update
And finally the bumper arrived. here are the pictures. I had some clearcoat scratch resistant sticker lying around so put them on the corners and sides of the bumper for more grip and protection (hopefully).
Looks good. Did it tear above the S-Pen when installing the bumper?

Actually a grey fabric strand came off revealing the black cloth behind thats all. it does look like its torn on the pic may be i can take another pic later.
Cool idea. How did you wrap the fabric around the outside edges and still get it to snap on properly?

Its all thanks to the adhesive i used. Really strong. do not use super glue as it will leave blotches of dried glue visible through the outside and will not give a even finish. Also when selecting a cloth for this make sure it is very thin and not too stretchy. thin coz we dont want it sticking out on the sides when wrapped around, it will not let the bumper fit in properly. not stretchy coz it wont give the fabric an even lay on the back.
Hope it helped
