I'm not sure anyone has posted this yet, but I didn't see any mention of it on the first page of threads.
Anyway, according to a couple of sites Sprint and Motorola have an invitiation only event scheduled for June 9. Dan Hesse (Sprint CEO) and Sanjay Jha (Motorola CEO) will be there. So obviously this will be an important/big event.
Rumors are proposing that a device called the Photon 4g will be released at the event along with the Xoom.
The Photon 4g is supposedly a better and upgraded atrix 4g.
Specs for it are rumored as follows:
-4.3″ qHD Display (960 x 540) Same resolution and size as Evo 3d
-WiMax Support
-1 GB RAM
-8MP Camera
-Latest Build of MotoBlur (as seen on Droid X2)
-Soft-Grip Back with Metal Kickstand Similar to original Evo
-Target Ship Date of July
If these rumors are true, along with the EVO 3D and if Samsung GS2 is released, Sprint's lineup of smart phones will for the first time offer tremendous choice for flagship devices.
So, what do you guys think about this rumor? What are your thoughts in general?
And finally, would it not make more sense for Sprint to release the EVO 3D before announcing any future devices?

Well - If its not Encrypted....there's my new phone.....
Shouldn't be since Moto said they were going to be releasing unlockable bootloader found in the xoom on future devices starting in late '11 as long as carriers say ok. Now kicker is "late '11" and even more so "if carriers ok it." So if at the least bit we will know by late this year if Sprint is the one wanting the locking of the phones and will then in turn have to take the protest to them and away from HTC.

Saw this, and while i want to believe htc will change the evo3D, if they dont and the photon is unlockable, goodbye htc.

That's interesting because I had been assuming that Motorola was the one pushing to have locked bootloaders. If it's Sprint, shouldn't we be directing the aggression of the Evo 3d situation towards them.

In all likely hood its both htc and sprint, but by voicing ourselves to htc the word will reach sprint anyways. And its a lot easier to rally people behind one 'evil' then two.

Wow great specs plus with a kickstand! Hmmm...If Htc doesn't remove the lock bootloader. This is a contender for us.

Not necess. We will know for certain if in the end of '11 that sprint releases a moto device that is fully locked. If that happens then It's sprint doing the locking.
I highly doubt we will see HTC said Sprint is making us lock them and point the finger as thats not good business for them.
but like the other poster said, voicing enough at HTC it will reach sprint and if enough voice they will consider changing.
The big thing will be if VZ starts releasing all open phones from Moto later this yr. That alone is likely going to be enough to push Sprint/HTC's hands.
All in all I'm not really interested in this device. Kinda hooked on HTC after the EVO here.
It would be weird to me if the EVO3D did not get launched before this is announced. Seems like they would want to release the EVO a few days before this event. June 5th anyone?
Well I have waited since January to upgrade. HTC want to lock the bootloader I can wait til samsung or motorola offers up a dual-core that isnt.

That's what I'm thinking. The 9th would would be a Thursday and knowing Sprint's past releases I assume it should be the 4th or 5th. I really hope Sprint announces something before this weekend.
Another thing, it looks like Sprint will also be announcing the Sprint version of the Droid Pro along with the Photon and what ever else they are hiding.

I just seen an article that the Droid pro is coming out on the 6th. It also said the employees are to be experts at it. I believe it was phonearena.

http://www.engadget.com/2011/08/15/motorola-photon-4g-review/#disqus_thread
So Engadget recently reviewed the Photon 4G and they claim its the greatest smartphone ever on Sprint. The reviewer, Myriam Joire, was the same as the one who reviewed the Evo 3D. As you can see the Photon 4g review is filled with attacks against the Evo 3D.
So far all I have learned is that Myriam Joire is a blithering moron, not sure how this man became a reviewer to begin with. The whole Evo bashing thing doesn't seem to make any sense to me. Engadget claims that the Evo 3D is a huge gimmick and very "disappointing". The review says the photon records smooth 720p video, when you look at the video you can see its filled with massive frame rate drops and the quality looks no better than the Evo's video. The screen has oversaturated colors and is very pixelated but Engadget claims the display is stunning. The Photon feels plasticy and cheap in the hand compared to the Evo.
The Tegra 2 is inferior to the MSM8660 and even Engadget admits the Evo 3D is faster to use. Sense also murders Motorola BS UI. The photon also does not have support for the 800 Mhz ESMR band which the Evo does have, this will be a huge deal by the end of the year when Sprint finally rolls out service on that. The 3D feature the Evo has is just a bonus feature.
So when you consider all of these things, what exactly makes the Evo a gimmicky disappointment and the Photon a wonder of the world?
Just seems to me like most of these cretin reviewers are hell bent on bashing the "useless 3d gimmick" and completely dismiss the rest of the phones features.
F*cking idiots.
The part that is interesting is that the same author, Miriam, did the Evo 3D article and from what I remember about it, the only gripe was that the camera was mounted near flush so it made it possible to scratch the glass covering the lenses. Other than that I thought it was a pretty positive article about the Evo 3D. I was a little shocked to read this article too.
Could you point me to a site that explains the 800 band and what that will mean for us EVO users later on? Sounds interesting.
I also agree that he is an idiot. Every review has the EVO as a much better phone. I told myself I will always buy HTC but with the new buyout I'm not sure now. LOL but that's besides the point. EVO all the way!
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
I call Engadget the Apple Blog. They see Apple as the GOD of all technology and that everything else doesn't compete.
Well it seems that Engadget is just determined to pass the entire phone off as a gimmick and a disappointment. I'm not sure what they were expecting this phone to do, cure cancer? eradicate poverty?
The expectations seem very unrealistic.
I like that the Photon is a global phone though. That's a great feature.

"The Federal Communications Commission has approved the previously announced HTC EVO 3D for the Sprint network with an interesting and unannounced spec. The FCC has confirmed that the EVO 3D supports 800MHz CDMA in the ESMR band. The ESMR 800MHz band is what Sprint uses for its iDEN network. Sprint eventually plans to transition the ESMR band from iDEN to CDMA as part of its expansive network improvement initiative. Once that transition is complete and Sprint ports its voice services to the ESMR spectrum, the HTC EVO 3D will be able to make use of it. Sprint's main CDMA network operates in the 1900MHz PCS band.
"
http://www.phonescoop.com/articles/article.php?a=8261
Basically we will have better coverage and much better signal indoors as the 800Mhz ESMR band will allow for better building penetration. I believe the EVO 3D was the first sprint phone to support this. The Photon does not.

Agreed but for most of us, we rarely leave the country so it isn't something we would use often.
The Photon has the ability to handle many international networks but ironically can't handle the 800 Mhz ESMR band which will impact many more sprint users than the lack of GSM support on the EVO.
The Photon has better connectivity abroad and the Evo has better connectivity back home, I think for most of us the latter matters more.
oh, shifting 2G voice service to lower bands... that's great for voice, but, I rarely have any voice issues--regardless of what the meter-bar says. It's the 3G/4G service I would love transitioned lower, but, I'll take what I can get...
why dont people realize that the 3d is a ****ing add on! if you dont like it, ignore it! The phone kicks major ass even when you forget it does 3d!!! And there is absolutely no UI that is more beautiful than sense! Its better than the gay iphone too!

Yes he does seem to speak on the evo 3d in a negative light..so I.thought maybe i made the wrong choice and i went to the sprint store to take a look at the photon..anyways it is no competition for the e3d..the screen regardless of.its defenders say is pixelated and I was able to see individual pixels without trying to look for them..it seems like the evo got knocked for the 3d d features..I don't understand how a.reviewer can deduct points bc of an added feature..if he didn't like it then just don't add any.I'm happy I went and took a look at the photon bc it made me appreciate my phone more..even the UI was laggy on the photon..don't let these reviews get too you..the only way to make a good decision for you is to actually go and play with the products you are deciding between.
The pillars of Apple's empire...to include mobile technological & UI innovation... is crumbling.
They came along and created a product that jump-started a stagnant market. This I am thankful for. However now, Apple's ridiculous patent lawsuits, gestapo scare tactics and dwindling fan base are signs of a shift in direction...
I played with the Photon at the store. Not a bad phone... but it is no EVO 3D.
As far as Motorola goes... doesn't Google now own the Motorola mobile division?
Why do yall get so uptight over this stuff? Not everyone is going to like the phone, it is what it is.

Because people that don't want to understand how a phone works like simplicity and controlled environments. It's kinda like this....have you ever read the book fahrenheit 451? People enjoy being herded as long as they are getting what they believe they want and don't have to work to get it.
If you haven't read the book I highly suggest you do.

Exactly. People like us aren't your everyday user. The average consumer sees what their friend, neighbors, cousin has and likes it and gets it. It's simple and to the point. People like ease of use, and lets be honest, it's easy to use and dumbed down for the average consumer, like Chris just said. Not to mention every frackin' store you go to has accessories for it.

because Verizon really brought the "game changer" to apple. In all honesty it barely made a dent into its customer base. It moved a few more phones for Verizon/Apple. I honestly doubt that it will be the most amazing thing sprint will have gained, as much as apple hopes it to be. Not to mention ICS is around the corner, sprint has a dang good IP of android phones available and coming soon. Apple is just hitting that non innovating road block and we will see more and more kangs from android in there software and there bringing massive changes to the phone as we know it has already been done by bits and pieces from every manufacturer including itself. So tomorrows announcement will be just another day in the books filled with apple fanboism, upgraded hardware, a software update full of kang, and nothing more exciting then that.
Its all in retrospec to the user. I'm android. And will be always. Amen. nothing more thrilling to see a beautiful os, android. Not to mention it's source built roms like CM/MIUI. Apple gets?
Hopefully, Sprint gets an exclusive on a Wimax-enabled iPhone 5 starting this month while the other carriers have to wait for an LTE-enabled iPhone 5 in early 2012.

i really doubt there will be a wimax iphone.. Sprint wimax is dead in the water, they are focusing on their LTE comeing early next year.. They made a huge mistake with Clear for wimax and just signed a deal with LightSquared for their wimax.. So i dont see any reason they would still contine to make wimax phones for a network that has totaly stalled.

IPhone 3GS, I sold my iphone last week and i hope sprint gets it cause I do not want to open another line to try it
Android phones activation are raising up sky high only cause metro pcs and cricket got them now and most phones are 200$ out of contract, so while a iPhone has top sales android sales like 40%-50% top android phones (SGS 2 , EVO 3d , Droid charged ,etc ) that can do what an iphone do (like video chat and play games without lag ) and the rest of it is because they just affordable phones

I don't. I'm one of the few people that use 4G, so the last thing I want is an influx of Sprint iPhone users hogging up my 4G bandwidth. I don't even want an influx of iPhone users hogging up my 3G bandwidth. Remember how ****ty Sprint's network got when the OG Evo started flying off of the shelves?
I agree with zone23: Invest in improving the network.....NOT in bogging it down by adding more users without increasing capacity.

Great, here goes the resale of my Photon after I paid $630.00!
http://wireless.amazon.com/f/springsprint?tag=phandroid-20
I feel for you. When I bought my Photon, it was off CL and there was a zillion of them for sale. I seriously doubt the Photon has much resell value which sucks but at least its a solid phone.
I was chatting with another member who has Photon, cardock, HD Dock, smart controller, bluetooth keyboard for $650.00. I dont see this happening!
With the LTE announcement, honestly, I was just going to give my Photon away when the SG Note hits Sprint!
Hello,
At least on my local Craigslist, the Photons still fetch a decent amount. In addition, on Ebay, the prices are not in the gutter.
When it comes to upgrade, I am hoping the fact I also have the HD Dock, Motorola Bluetooth Keyboard, and Mouse, will bring a high enough amount to offset the next phone I get as I am eligible for an Upgrade after May 18th.
As a former Premier Gold Member, I have until December to take advantage of my last Annual Upgrade from what I have been told. I am really hoping Sprint comes out with another Motorola Flagship Handset before December. All I know is that whatever one I get must be LTE. I really hope it does not end up being a Crapple iPhone 5. From what I have read, the 5 will offer LTE and after my EVO3D experience, I am pretty soured from getting another HTC. Thus, the choices by December might be pretty slim.
J
@Jungle Jack, after I read your post I thought of something, my Photon cost $630.00 no contract, you can get Photon for $0.01, but your married to Sprint for 2 years and if you want divorce, it will cost you $300.00 or so anyway. Therefore, you could get a decent price from CL or FleeBay!
With that said, I have been playing with phones since early 2000 (BB!), this is by far one of the best phones currently on the market. We have a ton of Photon users that jump ship for SGII, then a month later come back.
The only thing I'm waiting on is Samsung Galaxy Note! Which when I played with it, is light years ahead of Photon! WAY faster (1.4Gzh Processor), Cool UI that you can draw and cut-&-paste with pen, true 1080P HD, and a beautiful TV for a screen!! (5.4")
I am amazed at the prices people are paying!
They are available on Craigslist in the cities I frequent (LA and NYC) for $200-$250 in NEW condition all the time.
And I agree, it is a GREAT phone. It just works the way it should 100% of the time. And battery life is way better than any other Android phone I have had.
Hello,
This is by far my favorite phone by leaps and bounds. Funnily enough, my second favorite was a Motorola StarTac that Sprint offered for a very limited time it seems.
Granted, being with Sprint since the late 90's, we did not always have access to be latest and greatest handsets.
It has gotten a great deal better starting with the HTC EVO 4G. I just wish Sprint and Motorola had a better relationship as I am quite fond of the Droid RAZR, but do not think we will be getting a Sprint version. I am simply hoping for simply a freshening up of the Photon before my Upgrade is void. With there reported to be a multitude of LTE Devices on their way before the end of the year, perhaps there will be a Motorola Android LTE Device...
Cheers,
J
and another thing, we have dual bands (CDMA and GSM) witch is another selling point driving the price!

Not to mention, the Note has so many atvantages over Photon (and I mean noticable!) that, given one had the money or upgrade available, we be stupid not to IMO.

I have seen a few on FleeBay but nothing really flips my wig? To be honest, I rarely use clip on Defender (Likely because it winter and I have a coat and need quick access?)
I'm really digging the Galaxy Note Presige Vintage G-Note Diary Series. Room for money and Credit Cards. And if it does not add too much bulk and still fits in pockets.................otherwise, I will continue to look at holsters also.
EDIT: BTW, Photon is not only phone for $0.01, they have a 4G yard sale! With the announcement of LTE, and the 2015 death date, they need to do 2 things. 1. Get you into a 2 year marriage you can jusitify. 2. Dump the inventory of WiMax Phones. I don't have WiMax where I live and will never get it, so a 4G phone means nothing to me over a phone that is solely 3G!
Is it just me or has anyone else noticed that the Photon 4G is no longer offered as a choice on Sprint's website. The OG Epic 4G is even still there, but no Photon, it's missing in action...
Yes, Since the Photon 4G will can not support Sprint's LTE network, they have discontinued it. Phones that are only 3g are still there but the ones that could not be upgraded to support the LTE network have been discontinued and removed.

No, not at all. I still have both. Only will do WiMAX.
well, either way, The photon has been removed from Sprint's store for almost a month now. There were theories that there was going to be another motorola super phone released in the near future, but those have yet to be confirmed from what I have seen.
I got the Photon this past September and as of 6/1/12 the Sprint website says I can uprade at discount prices on a new 2 year contract. Is this normal, or did they change their upgrade policy? Is anyone else seeing early update options?

I just now noticed it missing. LOL. There is rumor of a "Photon Q 4G" on the horizon with a slide out keyboard.

Not that I am aware of. I don't even really know what Sprint Premier is. I was wondering if maybe they did this for all Photon owners but no one else mentioned anything. Or maybe I just got lucky and it's a goof up.
Complete Goof-up
340 days for my upgrade still.

Yes, Since the Photon 4G will can not support Sprint's LTE network, they have discontinued it. Phones that are only 3g are still there but the ones that could not be upgraded to support the LTE network have been discontinued and removed.

With all due respect, your comment doesn't make sense. As the OP states, the Epic 4G doesn't support LTE either (and can't be upgraded to it), but is still there.

From what I have read this is the conclusion I come up with...
Sprint needed to clear up some room in the phone lineup for upcoming LTE devices. They need to keep a certain range of phones for each category: budget, mainstream, and power user. The Photon was in the power user (top tier) category. Since they have the new EVO and will be getting the SGS3 as well as a few others, bundled with the fact that the Photon was probably one of lesser selling devices (especially since the release of the SGS2) it makes sense that the Photon was discontinued.
Of course we all know the reason why the Photon was not successful is because of the lack of marketing on Sprint's part and the lack of push by sales team within Sprint. I'm sure if someone came into the store and there was the Epic Touch and Photon sitting side-by-side the typical sales person would push the Samsung first.

When i worked for sprint I pushed for people to buy the photon very hard, and i had a lot of successful sales with it when i showed them mine in action, no one ever brought one back

If it wasn't for the signal issues with the SGS2, I would have gotten that. When I saw that it had been almost three months at the time and the signal issues hadn't been fixed, I decided against it. When I saw them side-by-side in the store, the SGS2 had a nicer looking screen, and the Photon was very jittery when I'd swipe from one screen to the next. Ultimately, I'm really glad I got the Photon. However, I remember talking to a lot of friends who had the same first impression of it.
I got the photon from Target mobile because it was $50 with my upgrade, and the SGS2 was $200. But the rep pushed me hard into anything but the Photon. He first pushed the SGS2, then the Evo 3D, and then encouraged me to look at an iPhone instead of the Photon. I was actually really discouraged until I got it home and realized what a badass it was!

Yeah, that's too bad. I still have my photon and was hoping for ICS goodness, but it was pushed back to Q4 2012 and likely won't get it. This is the only reason I went with the GNex. I hate bloat, but I do love my photon. It is interesting how Sprint is only interested in HTC and Samsung first before any other Android, except now pushing LG viper, but I bet that'll be a red-headed step child soon.
