Hey everyone.
I recently rooted my Hero GSM phone and tried to play around with some Custom Roms.. I'm currently running FroydVillain with a 691 kernel and I like it a lot, but want to know if there's any other Roms running smoother on the Hero packing Froyo..
I used to have the official eclair (2.1) with launcherpro installed, but wanted to try Froyo out because I heard that it runs 450 % faster than eclair. And since I went over to Custom Roms my batterytime has been lowered significantly..
Also if anyone could tell me what RADIO's are I would be very happy
Sorry for all the questions, but I have just one more..does updating the recovery software help on performance? I have an old version I think.. can anyone please link the newest?
I find the market of available Roms so large and wanted to know if anyone could recommend some Roms and include some links on where to get..
Froyo prefered since I just got used to how it works.
Thanks in advance

Latest Recovery: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
The radio I recommend is the latest GSM one at http://www.villainrom.co.uk/forum/showthread.php?307-radio-roms-download-links
Are you using latest Froyd, as we've got reports of 2 full days of battery life.
But 450% is an exaggeration, as it's based on a nexus 1 without vs. with JIT. You should get > 5 Mflops though in linpack using froyo.
Regarding the question in the title. You could search around here a little on Q&A since it has been asked a lot of times But mostly you'll get the answer that it's different from person to person and everyone has their favourite ROM for instance my favourite ROM is Cronos (anything) but I'm guessing pulser_g2's would be VillainROM (LOL)
Lol. Yeah it depends on what you want. I mentioned Froyd as you're on it already, but sense 2.1 roms do still exist, though you might try disappointed with performance.
I used a sense rom recently and had to remove it as I couldn't bear the slowness, even with oc.
But yeah, search is your friend. Decide what you want, and you'll find it here.
Thanks for the links.
Yeah well, I spent almost an hour reading about different Roms here and there and I see that it's kinda up to one self what you like about the different Roms. I've been very happy with FroydVillain so far, but I guess I should go ahead and give some of the others a try.
I've just backed up my current phone settings with "Titanium Backup" but is this enough if I decide to try a new Rom and want to go back later on? or should I do a nandroid backup?
And again when I flash over the new recovery.img.. Do I need to backup anything beforehand?
My Froyd version is the latest and I've kept on updating whenever I saw new updates. And yeah, two days is in my opinion not much. Beforehand, on the official 2.1, I could easely tweak 4-5 days out of my standard Hero battery, but I guess this has something to do with the kernel?
Sorry.. I'm really a newbie on this

If you want to go back you need a nandroid backup yes. If your talking about updating your recovery image (lol I'm guessing) no you don't. Just flash it. And the battery has something (everything ) to do with the kernel but if you want better battery set you min freq of your CPU lower or you can lower the max freq.
I see..
Thank you very much for answering.
I have just one minor problem..
How the heck do I flash over the recovery image? Don't I use the FlashRec-thingy? Might have deleted it at some point :S

I reccomend you flashing Amon-RA. There is a guide in his thread on how to flash it But if you want the ultimate easy noob thing you can download ROM manager from the market which will alow you to download and flash a pretty descent recovery in one click
Yeah.. Flashing Amon-RA is what I'm trying to. It seems I have the 1.5.2 version installed and I just downloaded the 1.7.0 one..
The first time I flashed "Amon-RA" did it with the help of a program called FlashRec. I followed the guide on theunlockr.com and I now end up with a message: "Backup FAILED: Could not run command." when I try to "Backup Recovery Image" through that FlashRec program.
I have an idea of how to work around this but I'm not 100% sure this is what's needed..?
Could I run the phone into recovery mode (through that 1.5.2 Amon-RA thingy) and then flash the never version right onto it or is this the wrong procedure?

Lol thats excatly how I rooted my phone too (same recovery and website even) Look in the thread it's described how you flash the new recovery via ADB
Yeah ehm... I'm kinda new to this so all his "code" or whatever it is doesn't give me a hell lot of clues..
Install
There are several ways to install a custom recovery, choose the one that suits you most (I probably forgot a few).
via adb -> Requires a custom recovery (with test-keys) like Cyanogen's v1.4 or my previous recovery
Code:
Copy recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img to the root of your sdcard
Boot into your current custom recovery (boot while holding HOME)
Connect your Hero via usb to your pc/mac/...
adb shell
$su (not required if you have root already)
#mount -a
#flash_image recovery /sdcard/recovery-RA-hero-v1.7.0.1.img

I fixed the steps underlined but after that I kinda went cold on what the **** to do :S
I boot into my recovery and what I get from his "guide" is that I my Hero should do something when I plug in the USB cable.. but nothing happends.. anyone who can put it down in baby-steps for me? :O
There's another way to do this it seems (2nd guide in his thread) but it seems to involve even more "code" so I guess I'll settle with this if it's possible.. :S

For you I would just recommend installing "ROM manager" from the market and then let it install ClockworkMod recovery that should do for you
EDIT: There seems to be an issue with ROM manager at the moment. It wont flash...
Yeah.. Might as well try this out since no one wants to point out on how to it the "geeky"-way
EDIT:
I seem to get an error when trying to flash the ClorkworkMod Recovery.. Any idea why?
Nvm.. Some dude (erasmux) has made an update.zip and uploaded to the Amon-RA post.. it did the trick
Ok, so I've tried to do my own research and have come up with very little. It took me about a year to figure out what rooting actually meant and did. So I rooted my SGS vibrant and flashed a bionix rom (i think). It says "bionix shut down sequence initiated" or something like that when I turn it off (any ideas on what it is or how I can find out). I really have no idea what version it is. I also would like to put a new rom on my phone but am scared ill screw it up. I watched a youtube video that told me how to do it the first time I flashed anything. It works with a few random screw ups but KILLS my battery. I would really like for someone who knows more than me to explain what a nandroid backup is and how to do one. What the clockwork rom manager can help me do. What the one click lag fix did. Why my computer won't read the storage things on the phone when connected to the phone anymore. What is this odin thing. What is a kernel. will I still get the ota updates without the stock rom. Where did my stock rom go when I pushed backup before I flashed this rom in the rom manager app. Did I actually wipe all the original data from the phone. Why can't I restore boot animation with one click lag fix(it says somethings not found... Did I wipe/delete it?). What is an apk and sdk(or skd)? What is a voodoo lag fix. How many times can you flash beer something goes wrong. I'm really new to ALL of this and have had no help really when I've asked a lot of people who apparently know more than I. ANY help from ANYONE who knows ANYTHING would be greatly appreciated. Thank you
Almost all of those questions can be answered by reading the Tips and Tricks or Noob Guide threads. Those two threads have given me all the info I've ever needed for the Vibrant.

Theres a lot of questions in there so I'll just bite off a few at first. Before that, have you taken a look at the vibrant bible thread in the dev forum? It covers a lot of the basic ' how tos '.
Firstly, you can possibly see what version of bionix you are running by looking under settings - about phone - build number. now might be a good time for you to odin back to stock and start fresh. Odin is a program that runs on your pc and can safely install a rom on top of any lag fix you may have enabled. You can read about using odin to go back to stock in the vibrant bible thread I mentioned earlier. Once you go back to stock you can receive ota updates from tmo if that's what you want or you can reroot and flash another custom rom. If you choose to flash another rom I would recommend reading every post on that rom's thread so you can learn from other's experiences. I would also recommend you keep reading the bible thread, theres a ton of good info there.
Good luck.

Dude, THAT is why I do those stickies, thank you! So glad it helped man!
That was really helpful, thank you and I will be looking into this more little by little. But I also have 2 very specific questions:
1. Is it possible to turn an htc windows phone into an android phone?
2. will I lose everything if I push the flash clockwork recovery in the rom manager app? I haven't done it yet but everything I've read has told me to do it the first time. I have the bionix rom running and don't remember flashing the clockwork recovery thing EVER. have I messed up or can I just do it whenever? And is it true thats how you make a nandroid backup because thats what I've read.
I really appreciate you taking the time to help me out, and being patient with me. You guys are the reason I love android. Thank you from your very lost, slowly learning, new friend.

Depends on the phone, many do have android roms available. Just look up whatever windows phone you have in the forum section and if there has been some android development there will most likely be a section in the thread devoted just to android development.
You need to odin back and start from new

Hello to all,
Firstly first post to this site and also new to the world of rooting/flashing so bare with me on this one..
Ok as title states I would like to know on how to successfully flash my x10 and receive the benefits that xda have given to alot of us!
Phone specs:
Xperia x10a.
Ver 2.1update1.
Rooted via super one click.
So far I have only been able to root the phone.. I have TB and have performed a back up recently. I do also have the Rom Manager app whilst watching a tutorial via youtube flashing using the Rom Manager I was not able to use the Flash ClockworkMod Recovery as the x10 was not in the listing to proceed. I have also got xrecovery ver 0.3 and tried another method using this but I was not able to install xrecovery properly.. I downloaded it all well and good but went to install and the 3 windows never became ticks just crosses.. Uninstalled and reinstalled but to no avail it did not work..
So my questions are:
Have I done something wrong on my end for this not to work? (knowing my luck yes).
And all I'm after if someone could take the time out and lay out a clear somewhat easy path in order for myself to be able to flash and install custom Roms? cm7 is what I would like to use unless if a good recommendation is given.
Thank you in advance to all and I do apologize for the long post I just wanted to make sure I covered everything.. Still new to this
Kind Regards.
Agera.
Xrecovery installer can be a bit troublesome. Sometimes it doesn't even work for me.
In my opinion, the best way to install xrecovery, root, & jit enable your x10 is through flashtool. You will need a PC but the process works better than the installer. Try that method and find out if that works.
Hey thanks for your reply, my noobness is showing greatly at this point regarding xrecovery... it'll help if I actually click install busy box and destination folder (duh) made me look....yeah Ok well now I have a phone that has been rooted and now have xrecovery in operation, I guess now comes to install a custom rom.
Now to sum it all up basically I have to copy paste desired rom and google rom pack load it onto the sd card (not in any file inside sd but just on sd) perform final backup get into xrecovery factory wipe first? I believe then custom rom reboot then get back into xrecovery then install google apps reboot and done?
I hope I got that down I'm trying to remember processes without having to go back to a tutorial, if I left anything out permission to give me a clip over the ear
Cheers.
When you pick a ROM, make sure the phone's baseband matches the ROMS baseband the developer wants. Also, follow how the way the dev wants the ROM installed, like phone wiped and cache wiped and stuff. And sometime there are multiple files that needed to be flashed in a specific order in xrecovery. So make sure you follow all the devs directions. Hope this helps.

and you can find different ROMs that don't require you to flash googleapps as well, that just makes it confusing. I started with FreeX10, as it was simple and easy to install. once you have a hang of it, I recommend using Trip's GB MIUI. and you said you backed up phone before you installed xrecovery? I recommend you backup using xrecovery first

fixed phone was able to get back into xrecovery and do a restore...
Ok, something I want to ask regarding what I did today when I went to update to a newer o/s eveything went fine until after the phone rebooted and came back to the home screen the 2.2.1 froyo rom I used seemed to be refreshing itself every 2 seconds which made it next to impossible to navigate around the phone... The arc version 2.3.1 opened up and about 30 seconds it froze restarted and shut down again did that for a while... So both didnt work for me only other thing I opened up was the google pack so I could get the market and gmail, I also tried it without installing google apps... same thing happened.
So my question is have I forgotten to put an extra file in? or was it my blind luck that I used to unstable roms?
I've really tried here.. if anyone can please post a link that is certain to work with exactly what i need to do and what files I need that would be really great. Whether its 2.2 or 2.3 it doesnt matter to me so long as it works at this stage I'm having no luck getting something solid here...
Cheers.
Hello everyone. I'm a noob.
I have a Droid X2 and Verizon service. It was running Gingerbread 2.3.5 and version 1.3.418, and up until yesterday I hadn't even rooted it. I followed these instructions for CM10 carefully but apparently made a slight mistake.
I made sure to root properly: Superuser worked perfectly, I had Busybox, NANDroid, and Bootstrap Recovery all working, and the phone worked just like before.
In the tutorial I linked to above, I think I know where I went wrong. I downloaded GAPPS 4.2.2 (funky wording since he said 'latest' and then '4.1.x' , so not the latest) and then CM10 A3. I then went into BSR and installed from the external SD card. GAPPS succeeded, but CM10 did not (Status 7, some kernel disapproval or something). When I booted the phone after that, MultiTouch keyboard couldn't start and so I just froze it with Titanium Backup and used Swype because it was annoying. The next thing I tried came from another xda thread (that I seem to have misplaced) saying that removing the top 2 lines of META-INF/com/google/android/updater-script would make it work. I'm pretty sure this failed similarly to before. I then tried wiping all data (since I had backed it up 3 different ways) and installing CM10. It still didn't work, and when I booted I got to my current state of purgatory.
Now when I boot, it tries to run the initial setup but that crashes (and multitouch keyboard crashes too). I've probably lost root access and currently don't have Titanium Backup or any other method to restore from backup since the programs were wiped. I've been trying to do an SBK factory reset using RSD Lite, but the phone won't go into RSD mode.
At this point I just want a working phone again and I'm not sure what to do.
TL;DR: Used the wrong GAPPS version when installing CM10 A3, decided to wipe all my data and try the install, now I'm stuck in neutral.
I guess the internet lied and gave me the wrong SBK the first time. Setup did work, and it wasn't RSD like I had thought.
I still would like to know what went wrong the first time through, and why it seemed like I wasn't able to overwrite the incorrect GAPPS version I had first installed. Once I saw my mistake I did use the correct version and nothing changed.

you state in the beginning that you are on 2.3.5. it is crazy that you were even able to flash cm10. it is made for 2.3.4 . and DZKs OP on cm10 is a bit sketchy in the wording and severly outdated.
there are a few things you need to do in order to get BSR working inside of A3 , as well as needing the GAPPS for 4.1.X and not 4.2.2 this is only cm10 , not 10.1 .
you need to SBF back to 2.3.4 (google EZsbf for droid x2) it is way easier than trying to use rsdlite for a "noob" , and then root. then follow the steps you completed to get where you are now, except use the right gapps.
THEN: (this is not in the OP for cm10 ) , perform THIS : http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=37698274&postcount=1573 in order to get the patched cm7 bootstrap working. DO NOT try to use the regular BSR .
i can try to help as i get back to my computer here and there, but hopefully others pitch in , as i dont have that much time. hope this helped.

I wasn't able to flash CM10. I was able to flash GAPPS 4.2.2, but then unable to flash GAPPS 4.1.x over that installation.
And is it really that outdated and sketchy? The version of CM10 I was trying to flash was made on January 11, 2013. Correct me if I'm wrong, but Gingerbread 2.3.5 is almost 2 years old now, right? It's surprising that I'd have to go back to the previous version.
I may try out your suggestions later, but 8 hours of fiddling with my phone yesterday wore me out a little (a lot). Thanks!

the OP for cm10 hasnt really been updated since alpha 1 . so yeah it is outdated. alpha 2 had a non working wifi module that was never even mentioned in the OP and had to be figured out by the droid x2 community. alpha 3 had the working wifi back in, but did not have the proper Hijack.zip in place in the system files, whereas the old versions did. this was also never mentioned in the OP.
watch this video. it may help.
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HJdvyufvYp0
the dude who made this video also has DOZENS of how-to videos for the droid x2 on his channel. just search for it on youtube. (ex: how to sbf droid x2)
sbfing your phone to 2.3.4 , using EZSBF , shouldnt take more than 15 minutes.
2.3.5 re-introduced a lot of issues that we had with 2.3.4, so most devs base their roms around 2.3.4. in fact, there are really only two roms for 2.3.5 worth trying out, Eclipse, and gingerbread phone , 7 and they are both gingerbread. :crying:
if you read up on what needs to be done, the whole process of SBF, ROOT, and flash cm10 THEN gapps, should all take less than an hour, even for someone who is fairly inexperienced.
i wasnt trying to dog DZK's post for cm10. i was only stating that if you follow HIS instructions, it is confusing as hell.

Thanks for the link. I remember watching one of his videos yesterday for something, but apparently this was the one I needed! He does have another video on how to SBF back to 2.3.4, so I think I will just go for it right now.
Also yesterday it only took so long because I had to figure out what mess I had gotten myself into before I could figure out how to figure out what to do. This definitely looks like it shouldn't take more than an hour. :good:
I do have one quick question about backups. NANDroid is a full system backup, including the OS, right? And Titanium Backup is for apps and data? Therefore I should be able to restore all of my apps and data into Android 4.2.1 with Titanium, right? I at least know how to get back to 2.3.5 and restore my data if I can't restore it in 4.2.1, but I'd rather not have to go through this process again if I find out that Titanium can't restore everything.
(haha... I couldn't quote you because of the outside link and my 'xda noob' status )

a nandroid backs up the OS as well as all apps and data, but that only helps you if you are modding/messing with that specific rom. so yes, TB is the way to go for restoring apps across roms. glad to point you in the right direction! report back once youve made the jump. :fingers-crossed:
Success!
I used Tomsgt123's tutorials and they were fantastic. First I had to install the 2.3.4 SBK and then CM10 and Gapps. I'm currently running Titanium Backup and it's working flawlessly.
I did have one hiccup earlier though. I noticed that my contacts weren't backed up, and apparently I had disabled the online contact backup also. I was hoping that I could do a NANDroid restore, backup my contacts, and then go through with the CyanogenMod installation. But, the restore kept hanging and refused to finish. I tried 3 or 4 times, and on the last try I restored by section and it was the data section that caused the hang.
So, I'll have to rebuild my contacts list a little bit, but since SMS was backed up I'll at least get the people I care about . Cyanogen is pretty sleek and so far it's been noticeably faster than Gingerbread. I was constantly getting a low framerate just navigating my mainscreen before, and that's one of the reasons I was inspired to try out Jellybean or just anything newer. I can't make any claims about battery life yet since I haven't unplugged it, but other reviews said the battery can last more than twice as long which is fantastic.
I can't thank you enough, Lorenzo, for pointing me in the right direction. :highfive:

thats awesome. i loved the feeling when i first flashed a new rom on this phone. glad you got it figured out. make sure to thank Tomsgt for his videos as well . hes a cool dude and put a lot of time into it.
as for battery life, its kinda a bit rough on cm10. i wouldnt say twice as good. that would be too good to be true...lol . but if you limit your apps, it shouldnt be that much worse.
one thing, to improve performance, under settings, go to developer options, and near the bottom there is background processes. its set at standard limit by default. change it to three at most. this will make a noticeable improvement in performance, but will also need to be re-set at 3 at most if you ever reboot/power off.
glad i could help! :highfive:
I'm gonna go out on a limb here & ask a question that's been on my mind for a while, so bear with me. But first, let me give you some background so there's no confusion & no unnecessary questions asked. I'm by no means a "pro" at modifying my Note 3, I just follow instructions carefully & then implement those directions to achieve results. That's how I rooted my Note 3 but could still care less that I tripped Knox in the end.
I have the 32 GB Sprint Galaxy Note 3 with an 8 GB microSD. It's rooted using Chainfire's method. I also have TWRP for a recovery, but I'm using the stock Sprint ROM that came with it. I have a few root apps installed (Titanium backup, AdAway & Root Explorer) but the rest are what Sprint (& Android) put in there, minus a few that are totally unnecessary for me...(chat apps, picture drawings, step counting & so on) that were removed with Titanuim. It's still on 4.3 Jellybean with PUBMJ4 baseband. I also have the Wi-Fi hotspot fixed through 2 file replacements using Root Explorer.
Now that you know what I have, onto the question...
I see many, many ROMs in other threads that I'd like to try out, but don't know how to go about doing this. Before you jump right in & answer, here's my problem. If I try a ROM but don't like it, or it doesn't suit my needs, how can I go about going back to what I have now in the best (& fewest) steps necessary? In other words, to go back to exactly what ROM I have now, the apps installed, baseband, the whole nine yards. Just like a computer backup, it's a bit-for-bit restore, completely mirroring the hard drive. Understand?
Maybe you could explain to me like I'm seven years old what apps I need, what procedures are taken, the order in which they happen & so on. If I need an app or two to do just this, I have approximately $20 Google Play credit left.
Can a DEV or an experienced person that's done just this help a fellow out? Don't get me wrong, the stock ROM I'm using works for me, but there's ROMs posted that look just awesome! It's all about "personalization", am I right?
Easy, since you have a custom recovery installed (twrp) , you simply do a "nandroid" backup (I personally like to backup to an external SD card, so get a bigger one) before wiping and installing something new. If you like what you got, fine. If you want to go back, wipe and restore! Easy Peasy!
Sorry, being a father means sometimes your time suddenly becomes unavailable. But believe me, it's really easy once you figure out twrp.
I'll let another fine member get more details if you actually need them. ?

So did you figure it all out?

Doing a Nandroid backup as we speak! I didn't realize TWRP could do that. (duh! ) I only installed TWRP because I just liked the name of it. TWERP!! (gotta nice sound to it, doesn't it??) Thanks a bunch! :good:

I did. I found a Youtube link on how to do a TWRP backup on the Sprint Note 3. Easy Peasy as said above! I'll try some ROMs this weekend (can't promise nuthin' cause it's gonna be 70 degrees this weekend & I'm itchin' to ride my mountainbike along the boardwalk at the Virginia Beach.)
But now that the hard part is outta the way, it's all easy street from here!
Just be sure to Please, oh god Please, read all instructions on any rom you decide to try. Doesn't hurt to read the last 10 pages of each too, get an idea of Current issues that may not be documented in the OP.
And don't get lazy, follow word for word. The only times I f*cked stuff up was when I didn't follow instructions (ie, thought my experience meant I knew best), or just got sloppy.
And, don't forget to wipe! (I wipe 3X, everytime, as a habit. Some people will give you reasons why that's unnecessary, but I can say confidently, if perhaps anecdotally, that I Never have the issues others have with bad flashes, softbricks, FCs, etc.)
Something to get comfortable with, even though you may never need it is ODIN. It's most common use is a utility for flashing stock ROMs and firmwares, great for recovery from bad things. Again, you may never need it, but have it ready in your Pc with a stock ROM file, just in case.
Finally, Titantium Backup can be your best friend, if used properly. It can also be a real pain, so don't become too dependant on it.

No worries! As I said in the OP, I follow directions carefully. I read everything.
Odin is my friend as well. I have it installed on my laptop. That's how I flashed basebands & deodexed stock rooted ROMs on my Galaxy S III. I also have the original stock Sprint ROM for this GN3 "just in case", in a folder sitting on my desktop with a few extra tools. I've never bricked a phone, unless you count using Samsung's online update (can't think of the name at the moment). It said 4.3 was available, so I downloaded it. It flashed, rebooted, but stuck there. Never finished the boot, just gave me an error code. Samsung's own update killed my GS3 & was unrecoverable. Believe me, I tried everything. What was strange, was the ROM was 4.3 but the baseband was the previous version, not the newer one, so the phone just puked. It never updated the baseband so it bricked. Now, I tried (and used) different radios with no problems before the update. Everything worked in harmony. Go figure!
Time for sleep my friend. Gotta work in the morning!
