[Q] Confused After Firmware Update - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

I tried to update my SGS2 to 2.3.4 by flashing Frankenstein XXKG2 and then proceeded to root the phone back again with CF-Root JP_XSG_KG2. But then it had data connecting problems and wifi only worked, even after trying to set my on APN settings. So I tried KG3 as well for both of them, it didn't work either. I think I tried to recover what I had before using CMW but now I have no idea what is going on with my phone. The phone no longer is able to connect to data or even call anymore.
PDA: 19100XXKG2
PHONE: I9100XXKG2
CSC: 19100XEUKD1
I don't even know if i'm running 2.3.3 or 2.3.4 anymore. Can someone help pls?
It's a Bell phone so it was originally UGKG2.

Match your IMEI from the settings menu to the one behind the battery cover. s See if they are the same.

When this happens recovering you have to do a full wipe before restoring from backup

I tried that. None of the 3 things change.
Data still doesn't work but the phone is connected.
Is there a way to get back to 2.3.3? Can i download the firmware from somewhere?

[Q] Phone totally screwed?

Hey all.
I was on MIUI 1.9.2 and flashed VillainRom (wiped everything as usual) and after the reboot, I couldn't get any signal. Went to the mobile network screen and I get an error saying I don't have a sim card in my phone.
My baseband and IMEI all read unknown.
Tried restoring a nandroid with no luck.
Are there any fixes or do I need to send it off to be fixed?

Another problem with Custom Rom!
Anyway, do a Factory Reset, if it doesn't work then flash Stock ROM.

This might be a long shot but try toggling airplane mode on, reboot the phone and once fully booted toggle airplane mode off.
This issue has nothing to do with the Rom you flashed, (not VillainRom anyway) it seems in all your flashing you may have messed up your EFS partition, some people got it back when they flashed a stock ROM, if you don't, you may need to get in contact with Odia, he can assist you with getting your IMEI back

Flashed KG3 fully, nothing.
looked inside the KG3 zip again and found a tar with EFS in the name. flashed it via Odin and all is well.
Thanks for your help.

Good for you it worked .

How would I unroot SGS2 XWKI4?

I want to maintain all my appdata and stuff, how would I go about unrooting?
SuperOneClick and S2 Root freeze whenever I try to unroot with those, is there anyway of fixing this and if not can you link me with the correct things I need to download because I have quite literally explored the internet and I am tired.
I need to send this thing off totally unrooted for repair.
Why make another thread?
What use is keeping app data on your phone if you're planning on sending it off for repair? Chances are it's going to come back factory reset.

True... Then how do I reset my phone to stock?
Flash original stock firmware for your phone via Odin. You can usually get it from sammobile just sign up and type in your model number and search for your original kernel if you can remember it, download, flash via Odin in the PDA section.
EDIT - you will need to reset your flash counter also using a USB jig to remove any trace of rooting.

And this will totally remove root from the phone?
Yes it will. I would do a backup of anything you want to keep and do a factory reset before flashing.

[Q] Baseband Unknown

Okay here is the problemo
i was running D4v10 with siyah Kernel
I had the dreaded unknown baseband, Unknown Imei last night after my phone randomly rebooted. Thought Okay, ill restore it with helcats EFS tool. didnt fix it.
So next i tried to restore the EFS backup with http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1308546. That didnt work either.
The phone has been factory reset
So i flashed KI4 generic from Intractech's stock thread and used CF root to go with it and it worked my Baseband and IMEI are restored, However now whenever i flash any new firmware VIA Recovery (GB roms, CM9 and AOKP etc) my Baseband and IMEI become unknown. so basically my phone still works if i use a stock firmware with CF root, but i cannot flash any new Roms via Recovery. Not even LP7 Generic works...
Has anyone come across any similar problems to this?
Also Flashing the Ki4 stock firmware, Nandroid back it and then updating to CM9 doesnt work, however when i restore the backup it works again :S
tearing out hair
i flash my sgs1 an sgs2 uncountable times but i din face pblm, but yes once my efs got corrupted in sgs1 but i had bckup......anyways wat u do first factory wipe, clear cache, cache prtition then do a clean install of stock rom tht ur kies shows not any otha stock,,,then use the correct cf root for rooting an for cwm...check if all is good then install hellcat and make a new image of efs(only if phone is all good)then will c later if ya got prblm

yeah the EFS backup i have is fine. /EFS is also fine. The only way i can get it to work is if i use the KI4 stock firmware. Kernel choice doesnt even matter.

Nothing but stock ki4 results in unknown baseband. That is the problem. No matter what I flash or how I flash it, results are the same.
I only managed to get it to work once with efs pro on a different firmware (lp7). The phone didn't reboot and and after a couple of minutes it was fine until reboot.

The only firmware in which it works is ki4 (haven't tried more gb firmwares yet though. Will tonight). Any ics or non stock gb firmwares haven't worked.

if the imei no is come to defaualt then efs is curropt don flash roms it wont work .once on my sgs1 wat i did was --delete the imei file in the efs folder in phone ,nv-data.bin,nv-data.bin.md5 and then i took these 3 files frm backup and pated in efs of phone, then rebooted an my csc, pcode, imei was back again ..many suggest flashing a stock rom,but tht dint work ,and the to restore csc well tht too dint work i myself expiremented and was back good again....

There's a known 'Unknown baseband' bug when you charge the phone and flash new roms. Take out the battery for 180 seconds. Put it back in. Go into recovery wipe cache, format cache, wipe dalvik cache. Reboot. See if it works.
Will try when I get home and I'll post the results.

Reboot with no charger connected, issue solved?
If not, flash another modem (doesn't matter which one) and reboot (unconnected)

Flashed TWRP with same results. Can someone tell me what am I doing wrong
1 wipe dalvik, cache, system
2. flashed rom
wipe dalvik, fix permissions
with no avail. Can someone please help
Try flashing back to stock ICS with Odin. Then root and do all necessary steps. After you do all that DL the ROM you want and wipe data, cache, wipe system and dalvick cache. Now flash the ROM. Reboot phone, let it sit for at least 10 minutes. Try that and see if it helps.

Just finished trying that. flashed the stock back in but now the stock has also gone unstable. even small things like accessing the settings menu causes a reboot. Almost turning into a nightmare. Thanks for your help
Are you using correct technique? A factory reset the wiping all caches? What baseband is in the About Phone?
The fastest way to recover is to use Kies firmware and initialization to clean it up.
I read through many threads and followed the technique described there in but seems like when I flashed the black star rom something messed up. I am unsure what. Is there any way to get the phone to the default state? Thanks in advance for all your help with this nightmare

Yes, that is a t-mobile modem. If you are at&t you want the LF6 modem.
Kies emergency firmware recovery will restock your phone.
Thanks to all for your help.
Whoa.....finally nightmare ended. I used the instructions in this thread

Even though I have the ATT baseband LF6 Tmo calling sill works fine

I had the same problem but the AT&T guy had me call the AT&T support line and they sent a replacement without even asking me to do troubleshooting.

I had the same problem till I ditched TWRP for CWM. My I717 seems to like ClockworkMod better. Just couldn't get TWRP to flash the modem correctly. *#06# will give you the "Null Null" IMEI message if you have the same problem as me. Use Kies to recover and initialize the device, its under "Tools". When done you will be on JB with proper IMEI. Flash CWM through odin and go from there.
**EDIT**
Turns out that the problem I was having might have been because of outdated modem files. The issue is resolved for me with the modems at the following link. 4g lte has never been this fast before these drivers. Fast and stable, be sure to give the OP a thank you.

I've been having the same issue. I started with Stock, went to CWM ver 6, CM 10.1. Decided to flash a modem, and then it would say unknown baseband / no phone number / no IMEI. After trying many modems and restores, I have restored through KIES back to factory as of now.
If anyone has an idea, it would be appreciated.
I live in Florida the only way I get 4g LTE is with stock modem...I used to have the same issue...so I just keep it stock...
