[Q] about developers modding roms - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

so, i've been changing ROMS like socks at the last month(cognition criskelo vilian) also kernels and modems. Now, i read somewhere that these roms are just removing .apk and adding to it, changing looks and themes and so.
I wonder,is that true? because in this situation i'd rather take a new stock rom and change it to my preferences.
I also read that the only dev group that actually changes things is the cyanogen with the CM7 which currently is not for me.
so, performance wise i can take stock rom, uninstall all the APK that i dont need\use and put a kernel to my selection, adding to it a theme, and technically its the same?
what are the actual differences between flash a dev rom and stock rom other than what i described?

Yes, it's mostly the same. If you're happy adding su, changing the kernel and removing what you want, feel free. Look to see if any of the ROMs are actually advertising any real features, and you will see they are not. Modem files even tend not to be included in the ROMs.
You will get a more recent build than the official releases, but no reason why you can't start with that yourself.

Hi,I'm currently on Litening 5.0 XXKG6 ROM,Ninphetamine 2.0.5 kernel..what I have noticed is that is everything a slitely jerky..a litlle..is it because this ROM is deodexed like almost every custom ROM?Anyone with same annotation?

Yes is fine but to me it isn't smooth like with stock ROM,esspecially when you change bethween homescreens..same is with every custom ROM,but I have red that is due to deodoxed ROMs...the stock is odexed so it is a little bit smoother..

Try LeoMar75 Odexed Rom, it has fully Hardware accelerated browser and a Kitchen App.
With this you can change the Rom just how you like with one click, themes, apps, features etc.

i'm using VillianROM 1.4 (a fully Deodexed Rom) and it as smooth as it could be. check if anything is clearing your Ram all the time as after it's been cleared you will have some lag loading your home screens but only for a few sec.

Best HTC Hero 2.1 vanilla ROM?

Hey
Can anybody recommend a stable and fast vanilla 2.1 ROM for the Hero?
I've tried Vanillain but found it to be quite laggy and FC'ing.
If not, can anybody suggest any 2.1 ROM I can use and just disable SenseUI?
Thanks
kie.
Im in search for this also. Currently using latest ahero but im not satisfied. Best vanilla rom I've tried is aychteesee but that's 1.5 it is fast as hell. Every 2.1 rom i tried is laggy as hell.

Exactly the same for me,,, I like Vanilla but agree, the 1.5 makes it not an option for me.... please can someone help us ??????
I'm sure we'll see some good vanilla 2.1 ROMs once HTC releases the 2.1 kernel source. Of course, that could take forever.
To be honest, the best "workaround" I have found is to use a 2.1 ROM and disable Sense UI.
I have been using Legendary recently using this method, the battery life is second best to any other ROM I have tried but it is very laggy and annoying to use. I find that AutoKiller shows a lot of processes running which can be stopped. This does speed the handset up alot, but say you close the People application, then open it again, it takes a while to show contacts.
I am literally going back to SenseHero 1.6 as we speak because 2.1 ROMs arn't great at the moment, and I will be disabling SenseUI, seems to use alot of resources and slows the phone down a bit.
For people who want to disable SenseUI...
Go to Settings > Applications > Manage Applications > SenseUI and click Clear Defaults. Press the Home button and then choose Home (you can also tick the box to use Home as the default Launcher)
BTW, I am quite new to android so any other advice would be cool, like what can actually be done with a rooted handset? I have failed to see any benefits yet (apart from an unlock)...

The best 2.1. IMO is Villain 3.4
As mentioned I've disabled sense and installed helix launcher.... I've tried all the roms, but 3.4 gives me the speed I need and most important, everything works.
The absolut very best rom is "SenseHero2.1" from "Stickman" (or try the 1.6 version, also still available)
its: FAST, STABLE, GOOD LOOKING, and WORKS!

oh, and no GPS problems or forced closings whatsoever, enjoy!

I have to agree that this rom is very veruy good,.... only problem is the vanilla lockscreen
Every ROM on 2.1 i tried is very slow compared to the fastest 1.5 there is like aychteesee. And disabling sense is only changing the homescreen i like vanilla everywhere
Personally, I use Fresh 2.0d rom found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=643034
My advice is to update your recovery console to RA 1.6.2 (check version for your phone first at the site) .. found here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=561124
Once you're RA is up to date, use the utiilities in the RA console to do a nandroid back up of your o/s, then wipe system and existing partition, repartition your sd card and convert ext2 to ext3. It will only take a minute to do all of that.. its really easy. Then flash Fresh rom and check his site for standard sprint apps if you want to install them. The rom has auto a2sd if you're interested in having your apps stored and run from your sd card. It didnt work on mine until I went into the recovery and manually flashed the as2d program using Darktremor A2sd 2.6:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=670087
After that, it worked great (at least for me it did). Pretty much everything works on the rom with the exception of live wallpaper, you can add it but then the weather animations wont work so its one or the other based on what you prefer. They have a fix for the lock screen as well but it has 3 different options based on alarm preferences. Other than that, I found it to be fast, functional and fun. Definitely better than any other rom I've used so far and about the closest you'll get right now to anything resembling an official 2.1 rom. Just remember to make that nandroid backup of your o/s before you do anything in case you don't like the rom (which I doubt will happen).
Best of luck guys!
another vote for fresh 2.0d, ran so much faster than the sprint 1.5 i had even after i removed all the bloatware.

[Q] new to vanilla roms :S

hi everyone!
i have some doubts about vanilla (froydvillain) vs sense. i recently rooted my hero and flashed a recovery, but i'm using stock 2.1 rom... so here you have some questions: (sorry if they are epically stupid LOL)
1. does 2.2 vanilla has flash lite in the browser... for example, when you go to a site in my current rom (2.1 official) you can see the flash animations etc., is it possible on vanilla?
2. does froydvillain support live wallpapers? (i know that they are useless but i love eye candy xP)
3. is there any app that has multi touch in sense and in vanilla doesn't?
4. will the lack of sense, in your opinion, be negatively noticeable? like the dialer, gallery, etc. if yes, are there any third party apps to compensate?
5. finally, what kernel should i choose?

1. No
2. Yes, subject to the usual limitations of the hero hardware regarding 3D wallpapers
3. Not that I know of
4. Not really to me, try nubdialer which should be in the rom, or dialer one. The gallery is a nuisance, but there are recommendations in the thread.
5. I would honestly use the stock one (ie. don't flash any one afterwards), as the ROM is sufficiently fast with no overclock to beat most phones with overclock (in terms of daily use)
thank you for the quick reply! i was going to ask about flashing the kernel but since you said it is not necessary i'll just forget it... about the gallery i'll just google it, about flash lite if i really really miss it i'll just go back to 2.1 rom... xD
well, thank you again!
i'm sorry for posting again, but at the download page are various links, one for the rom and a bunch for the kernels, my question is, do i have to download any kernel or is it "included" in the rom link? i know it is a noob question but it got me confused since at the list of kernels is the "normal" one (576mhz)...

I am using FroydVillian 1.5, it is super fast, stable and the looks are amazing. I do not miss the sunse UI at all, I miss the widgets, but they just use up performance anyway. I flashed the 576 kernel, which was a lower version number than the one that came with it...but as of right now, I have had FV 1.4 and liked it enough to get FV1.5. I have cycled through many roms, and these are the best in my opinion for everyday use...

[Q] How to use latest Stage UI which is installed 364 Stock ROM on DSC ROM?

Hi there, I have recently installed DSC Custom Rom ( http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1314898 ) on my S5.
DSC Rom is the best Custom Rom I've ever seen.
Then, also I install Dell Stage UI linked in that forum.
But, the Stage UI widgets are older version than what I had used with latest Stock Roms (for example 364).
Is there a way to install latest version of Stage UI widgets onto DSC Cunstom Rom?
(I have tried to picked up .apk from Stock Rom and install them on DSC.
However, I failed the way because of some errors, for example missing files)
DSC is based on the 406 ROM, meaning Gingerbread. You likely will have better luck pulling the components of the Stage UI from the 406 ROM than the Froyo ROMs. However keep in mind that most custom ROMs omit the Stage UI for a reason.
Have you tried taking the apk's that you want and pushing them to /system/app with adb?

Nope. Most omit it because it is both a resource and battery hog. In short, it runs about as well as a dog with no legs.
1.6 works at 'nearly acceptable' levels if you only have widgets you use actually placed, having ones on the home screens that you dont use will slow it down even more.
You can simply sideload the launcher and widgets if you have the correct features set in your permissions.xml (which is included in the zip)
If you're worried about resource use, only install ones that you intend to use.
I've been using it my main launcher now, but i only use the home and email ones. It's still (somewhat) noticably slower then adwex, but it's only riding the fine line between being slow and being so slow that it's distracting.
It's unacceptably slow if you have every screen loaded with a different stage widget, so that's the biggest thing to pay attention to.

[ROM][4.0.4][Smooth]|l|l|l|l|l|l| Aberration 1.3 |l|l|l|l|l|l|l| 08/25/12

(Click on image above to go to the Aberration website)
This is a continuation of my previous ShishirROM series of ROMS that started out on Gingerbread 2.3.4, and have evolved and expanded to today, where the latest version of ShishirROM is based off of XWLPG 4.0.3. Aberration is built completely independent of those and the only resemblance to my old ROMs is the dialer, which was an original creation anyways, but at it's heart, it's the next step. The ROM focuses on speed and smoothness and battery life. It incorporates common-sense fixes and ground-breaking features as well as third-party applications that bring something new to the table every time you use them. The ROM was inspired by the old Samsung gingerbread ROMS -- they were stable, fast, and just worked. This ROM manages to bring the same sort of feel back to the table while maintaining an updated look similar to the Galaxy S3 series of phones, and Android's resident Holo design. The Aberration Settings application is an extension of this ROM that lets you change some deeper settings, such as using Lidroid's beautiful 14 Notification Widget Mod instead of the default themed widgets, as well as provide an easier way for users to update to the latest version of Aberration, no matter which model of the Galaxy S2 they're running. This ROM aims to be the ONE ROM that supports every Galaxy S2 phone, and brings them on par with the super-phones coming out later this year. It's an update away from giving your phone four cores, two gigs of RAM, and a 4.8" SAMOLED HD display.
Features:
ODEXED (for smoothness)
Based on XWLPM
Siyah
Aberration Settings app
Lidroid 14 Quick Toggles
AROMA Installer
Google Now
Lux Auto-brightness
Opensource Sensors library (more accurate and faster)
Holo/Jellybean inspired styling
Apex/GS3/GS2 Launcher
GS2/GS3 Music application
Easy-Update
Samsung Dive
Complete development cycle
Directions:

I built this ROM directly from XXLPM stock, not ported it from another unrelated device, sorry if that was unclear. The Galaxy S2 i777 and Galaxy S2 i9100 are EXTREMELY alike, so alike in fact that about five files hold the changes between them. No actual porting was done.
And I can't provide a link to the original since I made this, and this is the original lol. It's just a Stock Samsung ROM based off of 4.0.4 LPM with a few tweaks and fixes thrown in.
EDIT: Let me try and be more clear: this ROM was built off of XXLPM. It was initially tested on the i777 because that happens to be the device I have, but the development of the ROM was exactly the same for both versions. The i777 and i9100 versions are very different. Different modems, kernels, libs, etc. This ROM truly was built for both devices in mind, therefore it isn't a port.
EDIT2: Moved

What he means is that what special features or original features does the rom have in order for it to stay in the original development for example paranoidandroid, it has the capability of changing per app dpi, from phone ui to a tablet ui etc. Jkay framework which can customize almost everything from the lockscreen to the notification bar. Because if it is just a cooked rom with some features that has been gotten from other devs, it should belong to android development. But i may be wrong, maybe you have something special in the settings you mention on the OP. Good luck on your rom bdw.
Cheers!

Hello,
I wanted to try your rom, so i downloaded the i9100 zip and followed the installation steps and i got installation completed without any problems.
Then i choosed to reboot. The screen showed the Siyah logo, then the phone gave me a sound... and then nothing. Black screen. I have tried again and again but the same result. Maybe i am doing something wrong.
Thanks

What kind of a rude person are you ? This is no way to post something on a thread
Anybody else facing this issue. Any suggestions for this issue.
For everyone facing the black screen issue, first make sure you're running the i9100 version, and confirm that you wiped data before installing, then try flashing another i9100 kernel before you boot up for the first time. It sounds like the kernel didn't get flashed for some reason. I'll have to do some more digging. If anyone can grab a logcat then i'd appreciate it, although I don't know if the Log service got started after the Siyah screen.
If it still doesn't work, it may not have gotten installed properly. Try going into mounts/storage in CWM and wipe /system, manually do a factory reset/wipe data, and wipe cache as well. That should get everything.
EDIT: If you're getting the sound after boot, that just means the boot animation isn't showing for some reason. Give it five minutes and see if the phone boots up. If so then I'll upload a fix for this when someone confirms that's the issue.

[Q] Unable to mod my stock rom via Gravity Box

I am facing several prolems in my XOLO A500s ROM (MTK 6572)
I have deodexed my stck rom + rooted but i am unable to implement the Gravity BOX fetures
Like: i can't get the data speed monitor mod,nor the clock mod and many more.
But there's custom rom which has this fuctionality to apply all the gravity box mods.
Is there something i need to change in my stock rom.
Please guide me through this.:highfive:
NOTE: I don't want to use the custom ROM because they have some problems in them some of them don't have gps on/off,another have the 1 MP camera insted of 5MP.

It is simple, nothing will work if the ROM is not close to AOSP.
In order to get GB to work, you will need to ditch your stock ROM and install a custom ROM which are extremely AOSP-based (CM won't get it work too).
If you insist, then you can do only nothing as the dev behind GB already stresses that GB are for AOSP ROMs and he will never ever interested on giving unsupported devices any support
Unless you're so desperate for it
You can learn compiling and decompiling so that you can grab some GB source code and make it work on your stock ROM.

That's not how custom ROM works. And what you have done is seriously wrong
Flashing a completely new ROM is better than the unsafe file overwriting inside /system/xxxxx . Though it might be working in your eyes, however I am pretty sure there are many errors in the logcat since you have mixed up your ROM with unfamiliar files.
Flash a custom ROM that is AOSP or code a new app that does what GB does for your device
Please take note of the above paragraph. That's the choices you have.
I was using GB before. Since I tried CM, and loved it, I have been known that GB won't be supported on CM. What I did was I completely abandon GB. I even have donated to such app. I feel sad, but yea life must go on
