How will the ownership of Motorola by Google affect us users?
I love my Photon, Google may have direct access to make things different for future Motorola Android Devices and Updates...
-----
My Motorola Mobile Android experience from Droid ×¹ to the HTC Evo to Photon:
Comming from a Droid X on Verizon, I have experienced most of the features of my MoPho with the latest gingy update. This hasn't been challenging and I love the features of the "axed" motoblur, (Edit: Motorola Applications Platform, not Motorola Desktop Interface), but I love my MoPho.
I previously had an Evo 4G, and I liked the UI, but hated the phone, with its unbearable internal storage, I got rid of it, and got my MoPho.
(I had my Droid X, Evo 4G, then Photon)
----------
Well, back to my topic, , what do you all think this will do to us?
Is this a positive, negative, post your comments below...
Quick Question: Has anyone came from the Droid X, or Droid X², and what do you think?
Keep the posts comming!!!

Google doesn't care if you root. If they do at all, it's because the carriers hate rooting.

If you look at the Nexus phones, they have easily unlockable bootloaders. True, they are developer phones. Google will be running the company separately, not taking over whole operations if i read correctly. I think a push toward unlocked bootloaders and sooner updates. I think a slow death to Blur, probably around when Ice Cream Sandwich comes. Flagship phone perhaps?

From the standpoint of rooting, google doesn't care about that, if they did would they let apps for root users in market ? I don'T think so. So you better forget that idea.
Now being a motorola/google phone owner, we should be much more optimistic than others about software. I personally think that google will take more care of us. Looking forward to see a Chrome OS instead of Weptop on our devices. officialy or unofficialy, i believe it will happen.
We get 2.4 faster than anyone else.

That's because most root methods use security vulnerabilities to get installed.. If you used that vulnerability to get root, malware can use it too - so the vulnerabilities get fixed.

Root is at a software level while the bootloader is closer to a hardware level and requires access to the phone. Just clarifying that for people..

Yes, you are correct about the takeover, it will be ran as a separate company, as I have read, I will edit my post.
I wouln't say a slow death of blur, for our Photons, but that is quite possible for newer Motorola Android devices, but at the same time, Motorola may work with Google's android developers to make a better blur-esque UI. Who knows?
Remember, if all goes as reportedly planned, then Google has the Blur patent...

I dunno about you guys, but the new blur is not so bad for me. I came from a Cliq and this ghost blur or interface is a major improvement.

That would all depend on the cable provider as well, however most (if not all) cable companies offer just a cable card that I'm sure future Motorola cable boxes will accept, if you purchase the box from an official retailer. Though you'll of course at least have to have the tv service through satellite/cable provider.
The acquisition, though, makes me wonder if I should get the Photon, or keep using my X10 Mini Pro for a while to see what comes next

Hello everyone,
I am hoping someone can help me out. I am currently rooted on 2.3.4 and am trying to wireless tether using Open Garden on my droid X2. It has no problem starting up and running, my iTouch even finds the signal and connects (this is indicated by the wireless symbol on my iTouch). However, OG does not recognize any clients connected. Also, my iTouch cannot do anything internet related even though it is connected to a wifi network.
edit: I also failed to say I have Verizon, not sure if that matters.
Any ideas? I've been doing some research and haven't found anything too helpful
Thanks!

It is my understanding that once rooted you can just use the WiFi Tether:

+1 to barnacle! I use it for my laptop! Works awesome!
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
i will give that one a try! thanks!
you are able to run CM7 on the DROID X2? Which one are you using? Last time I checked the X2 wasn't on their website.
Also, would you mind telling me what settings you are using for Barnacle? The same issue I had with OG is what is going on with Barnacle. itouch says connected, Barnacle says no clients connected. Maybe there is something wrong in the settings...
would you mind also telling me what settings you are using for Barnacle? I am wondering if maybe I just don't have it set up correctly.
It helps to know that it works for some people! I have hope I can troubleshoot it now =)
I have the CM7 on my galaxy tab and hp touchpad. I didn't do anything special on the barnacle...just downloaded and off I went. The only thing I did not do was secure it. Didn't feel like messing with another security key that I would forget. Couldn't get barnacle to connect my laptop...but I got easy tether for that.
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
oh gotcha. so you are running the default setting with no security right? hrmm. wonder why mine won't recognize clients. I will try to do an unsecured setting again. I think I tried it but I may be mistaken.
Thanks! and thanks for the quick reply =)
Yep default settings. I just looked and I've got skip wpa supplicant checked and also auto associate checked as well

getting my phone to successfully tether has been quite the task. for your vista laptop you use easy tether right? Is that a wired tether or wireless?
Its wired....and I have to say works extremely well...I videochat with my gf on msn and video quality doesn't seem compromised at all
Sent from my DROID X2 using XDA App
I will have to try that for my laptop. I'm glad I found out that Barnacle does not work with vista comps, it will save my husband a lot of frustration trying to get it to work.
did you get easy tether from the market?

Or if you have tasker I've made a post detailing how to get native tethering to work.
Here
You're in the fascinate forums by the way. If your problem relates to the incredible, you're probably better off in those forums.
I need to get the wifi working on my fascinate so I can tether the incredible it works fine on cyan 7.1

It's really hard to help you when you don't give much relevant info in your posts and don't express your thoughts clearly, but I think, after 5 posts, I have some idea what you're trying to do. You're gonna want to use the latest wifi tether app from here and switch your device profile to GSM Galaxy Nexus.
Try Open Garden tether app
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
Thank you knives out that did the trick......as to the relevance I thought it was clear
So here it is I've got 6 phones
OG Droid, Droid incredible, Droid incredible 2 (x2), and fascinate (x2) not wanting to pay for service on all 4.....they are used just over wifi......the incredible has TV out which I use in my car on the TV in my car to watch downloaded movies I just wanted the option to stream Netflix and watch that way so I needed the portable wifi......these ics roms are first I've used where devs haven't included the wifi app...thanks again

Yeah, sorry I just had to look at all you different posts to figure out what you were trying to do. Might just suggest to put all the relevant info in your first post in the future, it just helps to have that info when trying to assist you.
There is also a way to get the native tethering to work too, but involves some command line voodoo and I don't think it sticks after a reboot, so IMO the wireless tether app is probably the best option.
yeah it's working great but I have it set to cdma and it's working fine

Quote doesnt show your title but....They have wireless wifi now?
No but seriously sounds like you want to tether your fascinate to the other. Plenty of apps for that but I like the native one in cm7 or ICS
OK... After sacrificing my ability to tether by moving from CM7 xronified to ICS, I have tried all kinds of combinations to tether my Epic 4G Touch to my TP on ICS (currently running CM9 alpha 2).
I came across the app foxfi in the market and it WORKS. I am still on cloud 9 at the moment, but has anyone heard anything bad about this app? It doesn't behave like open garden or wifi tether, but its freaking working. I am posting from the tethered connection right now.

What tethering app are you using?
I must be missing something, how is it possible that what version of Android your TouchPad is running effects your phones ability to be a wifi hotspot?
I have never had an issue with using the built in wifi portable hotspot in Android to tether my TouchPad. If you enabled that on your phone when you were running CM7 on your TP, how would ICS affect that.

Touchpad doesn't play so nicely with all tethers. Consider yourself lucky. Alot of people dumped their TPs because they couldn't get tethering to work. It is very buggy. All 3 of my TPs don't tether at will. In the past, there have been different protocols to get each to work. My hotspot could be seen by every other device I own, but my TPs couldn't see it. There are tons of bug threads relating to wifi, but nothing really talking about tethering. I saw a few other threads in forums for phones addressing touch pad, but why not have a place in the touch pad forum to bring it all to one spot?
Now Foxfi works with all three TPs and no ceremonial switches and reboots are required to get it to go.
Mine tethers from my Atrix perfectly with the built in setting. didn't know people were dumping their tp cuz of tether.

Read what was here, but question:
Do I need to root my phone? I have the HTC Incredible 2, and am not trying to root that and just trying to connect my Touchpad (wifi-only) to my phone and be able to use internet, market, etc.
What apps and instructions would I need?
I thinking only people on Sprint (or Verizon?) have that issue....I tether my tp with my Samsung captivate on ATT all the time...so does my Sister from HTC sensation on Tmobile....

As far as I know, without rooting, you will have to pay for the hotspot service by your provider in order to tether. I would say try PDAnet, but I haven't heard of anyone successfully tethering via BT.

That could be the issue too. I will test it with some of my friends phones and report back (might be a day or two). I didn't think about a possible conflict with carrier specific phones.

I use freetether on my pre2 to tether-via-wifi with my touchpad, works great.
You're right about the bluetooth. The option is there, and I can get everything to link up, but it still doesn't seem to be actually sharing the internet connection. I thought it'd be brilliant to get bluetooth tethering going (it should use a bit less energy to tether, giving me better battery life), but it doesn't seem to work in all the testing and fiddling I've done...
