[Q] Mic Volume Too Low & Muffled - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi There,
Fairly new to SGS2 after coming from HTC DHD and have had the phone only about a week rooting & installing ROM Cognition 1.31 with kernel Ninphetamine 2.0.5 & matching KG3 modem almost from the start. I don’t actually remember making any phone calls prior to rooting etc or even until yesterday where the recipient said their volume was very very low & muffled (their volume at max).
• All system sounds are max. (but I think that really affects speaker, not mic)
• I have tried calling to other networks (mobile & landline) with all calls feint & muffled.
• Tried with alternative SIM (different network)
• Tried various radio/modem KG6, KG2 and restoring my stock ROM - (KG2) with Chainfire’s rooted KG2 kernel & matching KG2 modem.
• Mic hole is clean and no plastic
• Edit: UMTS signal is 2-4 bars
Still mic volume too low and no audible change.
With speakerphone ON, all recipients hear me fine (good volume and clarity)!
So far I’ve found the ‘secret code’ *#197328640# and selected;
5. Audio
1. NB (Voice Call)
1. Handset
1. Volume
1. DST I2S1 TX Volume
My current values are:
0. 66
1. 70
2. 74
3. 78
4. 82
5. 86
I have been searching in vain for a solution, so hopefully someone could please help me out. I’m not sure if I’m on the right track above or what values to change (if indeed I'm in the right menu). Is there another solution as well? Thanks.
Edit: Have tried setting the above values to increments up to 100 & also back to full stock KF4 Firmware (no root etc) and tried with higher increments. Factory reset and still very low mic volume to recipient. Still OK when using speakerphone.

Regards.

Thanks for that. Had a good read through, and tried a few things incl adjusting gain. But so far still no good. Just updating through Kies to KG2 (all stock) for another go. Otherwise waiting for my counter micro USB Jig to turn up and send back to the store.............
Any further suggestions welcome
Could any moderators please move this to the relevant forum section or thread, apologies. Did search google and Q&A here, but never thought to look in General,....considering it's a question.

Frankly those threads I mentioned are good but didn't do my purpose too. That Volume + apk is meaningless and the mod through keypad gets reset on reboot. But frankly I don't have any Low voice issue other than the headphone volume in a call, it is terribly low and I just stopped using it. I think only Samsung could fix it with a firmware upgrade.
Regards.

Hi there,
I had a similar problem, in fact, I rooted mine as soon as I could lay my hands on it...it was quite unfortunate that I was not able to fully test the 'mic' problem before rooting so I had no idea whether was it before rooting or after rooting...in any case..I am based in Singapore...Samsung Service Centre SUCKS big time here...
While I do love the Sensation ROM and Litening ROM on the SGS2, I eventually restored to the official ROM to have the handset replaced...
So with my new SGS2 that I had, I basically tested the 'mic' thoroughly, speaker phone, held to both my left and right ear as well as holding it in different angles to make sure the person on the other end could hear me perfectly..after that, I proceeded to ROOT the official firmware and did the 'mic' test again...when it was all good, I flashed it to my custom ROM of choice..everything works perfect now
Did I solve the problem...probably not but this post is for the people out there who are experiencing the same problem and hopefully in a position to have their handset replaced. While the SGS2 is great, I suspect quality control may be a problem...
Cheers

No luck, now fully stock, download counter reset and returned to Samsung. Just waiting for a replacement.
In the meantime, bought another, making sure to at least make a few test calls in the shop before walking away! All is good so far.....

so far no fix, sgs2 users tend to ignore this problem on the forums. You won't find a working solution, I've searched for days. Trail's gone cold and we're left with this problem. Samsung doesn't care to fix it either, and the userbase seems complacent.

After days of internet research, I found a solution that at least fixes my muffled mic problem. As you can see in the attached picture, Galaxy S 2 microphones are sealed in plactic casings. Suprisingly, my SGS2's main mic was not sealed (contrary to the attached pic), but the secondary mic was placed under, not in the sealing (which shows a clear fault in production). I tried to seal it back in plastic casing, which didn't solve the muffling issue. Then I completely removed the plastic casing and the mic sound is now much better, though it is still not as good as my other phone, I9003. Hope this helps other people.
BTW, I am not responsible for any damage to your phone; this procedure may render your warranty void, you can easily damage your phone, etc. Search youtube for "samsung galaxy S2 disassembly".
Prior to this solution, I tried various stock roms, custom roms, lots of modems, which didn't cure the problem. It is really shocking that Samsung's flagship product has such a major problem.

@ umitoz
Thank you for sharing your experience which may turn out to be a simple fix for some. I ended up returning the phone for warranty through the seller and came back all microphone functions repaired. Seems Samsung had increased the speaker volume as well.
As I did not receive any repair report, not too sure what was replaced or repaired, but all is working better than ever. Cheers

Did you screw some settings up?
On both phones repaired wifes & my new, the identical Tx values as before waranty:
DST I2S1 TX Volume (94):
0. 66
1. 70
2. 74
3. 78
4. 82
5. 86
Gain (Repaired & New):
I2S1 Rx Gain : 0x0
I2S1 Tx Gain : 0x0
Think this is how I left the gain when returned it for waranty, too long ago since played there, but beware, can make it worse also!
Since it's a very expensive piece of equipment, this problem usually a hardware fault, and I adivise anyone with similar problem after trying a few "tricks", to don't bother waste your time and return it for repair or replacement. If you're rooted, flash offiical firmware with Odin (Intratech thread) and reset Download Mode binary counter / remove warning triangle with USB jig.

Not quite, my mic is not usable at all on custom roms, and barely usable on the stock rom. I'm simply trying to get a baseline of what works for other people.
I'm picking the parts up and making a jig when I get home today and will take the phone back tomorrow.
Thanks

No problem. Hopefully you'll have it back quickly.

SGS2 - mic volume too low -- The Solution
Hi,
I had the same problem where mic volume was very low although calls with speaker or BT worked fine.
After trying several ROMs I realize this is HW issue.
I tried to replace the whole mic module with my wife's phone, but the problem stayed the same.
Then I've download service guide and followed the flow chart.
see enclosed files.
I found out that C621 capacitor was not connected well. I've resolder it and the problem was fixed.
I guess that this is a weak solder and the phone fails once it is disconnected.

i can confirm the small rubber/plastic piece is the culprit.
i replaced my screen recently, had no mic issues before this.
after, however the lower mic was totally useless, i had to use the speakers while in a call, so the top mic was used.
today i removed the small piece of rubber that covers the mic, it does indeed look as tho the mic should sit inside this, but it was not.
i used a small pair of scissors and removed the bottom flap of this, i then replaced it over the mic.
tested by ringing my slightly deaf father, who had no problems at all hearing and understanding me.
sorted

Hi,
Tried the code..upon pressing '5' I get a notification saying 'Caution: MENU Blocked'..plz help..
P.S. Don wanna remove the casing and expose the hardware to try the other solution..

Would you be so kind either to circle the capacitors or post a bigger picture as I am unable to located them.
Thank you

you can try korean modems M250K ub23 or M250S i have flashed them and i feel i have different phone now loud volume during calls so no more frustrations.

[Q] Noise cancellation/microphone hole is not open

Hi there,
At my SGS2 it seems the microphone hole next to the microUSB cable, is not open. Everybody complains they can't hear me.
Sure, I can send the SGS2 back, but then I'm won't have a phone for the next couple of weeks.
Does anyone know, who already disassembled the SGS2, what this could be? Some soft plastic which I can easily remove with a needle?
My last option would be send it back, but maybe you guys know an option?
Can I use some audio codes for cranking up te mic?
Thanks!

Hmm .. seems I have the exact same problem here. People are complaining they can't hear me and they hear a terrible echo. Tried with headset, problem solved (of course ) Not sure if it is not open, I can see something gray inside the hole, which could be the mic. Disassembling is not an option for me, just got it yesterday so .. if there is really something wrong I will go back to the store asap.
I am disappointed about this, really, expected a lot from this phone to replace my Desire.
EDIT: tried also speakerphone, then it is all normal. Speakerphone uses the mic on top near the headphone jack, I just found out. It looks like a faulty mic to me (or covered with something).
EDIT 2: Fixed, although people say that with my previous phone the quality was better. Reset to factory defaults did the trick for me. It seems that the firmware update the other day (used Kies) had messed something up, that is my guess.
New device
Well, I kept holding the problem. Yesterday in the morning all was fine, in the noon people kept telling they hear me with bad quality and an echo. I went back to the store, explained the situation, they gave me a new device. I can clearly see the difference in the microphone hole .. the first phone it was closed, here it is more open. Problem should be solved now, I hope. I can say that I tested the quality myself and I can hear the difference. The sound of voice is more clear and louder.
I think it is word a shot for you to try to change your phone for a new one.

Several Problems - Mostly Sound

Hi, had my galaxy s 2 for about a week and a half now and I'm getting different problems with sound.
2 days after it first started, when somebody called me, they couldn't hear me and i couldn't hear them, even though the sound was turned up to the max. It was the same if i called them.
Ended up factory resetting to solve the problem.
Two days ago it happened again and I just reset the phone again to fix it.
Now, when using swype keyboard its making different sounds, like the sound it's meant to make is there, but when typing certain letters it makes a faint version of that sound. Also, now I have no sound from swype at all, even though sounds are on and volume is turned up.
Is this a phone problem? Software problem (I'm guessing so) is there a fix? Should I contact Samsung to get it fixed?
PS.. I'm only using one non standard app and that is Facebook, and I'm on the stock firmware (latest)
PS2.. My screen is on a angle (Ie.. if you rub your fingers from left to right then at the end you will feel a bump, but if you rub your fingures right to left then your finger will run straight off the phone without feeling a bump) Anybody elses like this?
don't know about the other issues you have, but as far as the very well know "Volume issue" ("they can't hear you, you can't hear them") where volume is nowhere near acceptable during calls, even at max. either you download an app like volume+ (which highers all volume , except handset :-( , I had this phone since the beginning & volume was my issue for a about 2 months. My best advice is for you to update (Flash) to KH1 rom update if you have stock rom, it fixed all my issues with previous roms, and audio isn't very loud, but acceptable.
some tips:
Keep in mind that screen protectors can block speakers (if you have one) and volume can decrease significantly.
Make sure that your ear is placed EXACTLY in the speaker, like if your ear is attached to the speaker (this helped out for me, since I was accustomed to my older phone which used have my ear 1 inch away from my speaker, since it was loud)
let us know what worked for you as well..
Return the phone. The screen should not be like that. Its faulty

others cant hear me during call\Mic not turning on?

This issue has suddenly appeared. I have tried stock rom (nordic) CM9 and different aosp roms and also different modems, but the problem always returns after half a day or something.
So I can factory reset my phone, make a couple of calls and everythings fine for awhile but then suddenly no one can hear me during calls. I mean there is no sound at all, dont think the mic is turned on. The sound can start to get poor (like im on speaker and far away from the phone) til it doesnt work at all.
I have testet the microphones using voice recorder and taking a video and everything works fine, so i refuse to belive that the mic is faulty. Although its even weirder that the problem still persists after multiple full wipes (format system, cache, data, dalvik) different roms. Probably flashed stock rom with odin 3 times now and the problem is still there. I am now running fully stock non rooted, ive reset the custom binary counter and im ready to send the phone in for repair.
Unless the community can help me out ? any replies are appreciated!
Thanks!
Note that I can still hear the other person but he cant hear me. Switching to speaker and it all works fine ?!?!
What happends when i switch to speaker? does the phone switch microphones aswell? I understand that theres a mic on the top and bottom.

Yes. Regular voice calls use the lower mic, speakerphone uses the top mic. So it sounds like either something is blocking the lower mic, or the lower mic has failed. If you're comfortable opening the phone up yourself, you can try re-seating the rubber housing that is on the lower mic yourself. If not, take it to a service center.
Returned from repair
So guys I received med phone back from repair yesterday and the following parts have been replaced:
Module-RCV+MOT+MIC+E/Jack FPCB (GT_I9100)
ASSY ETC-SUB FPCB (GT_I9100)
And guess what, the problem still persists, my first phone call worked fine, but then the second call failed just like before?!?!!?
Is it possible that there is another hardware fault thats causing this?

Bump..... anyone???
Hmm. Maybe the rubber housing on the mic slipped after the first call, and is now blocking the mic. Or the part failed again. Or did you maybe put a case on the phone after the first call?

How to Increase earpiece volume on Xperia Z2 (D6503)

Hi,
I'm new to this forum and a n00b, so please be gentle
I have an old Xperia Z2 which I bought in 2014. The phone is fantastic, and in complete working condition till now. I recently updated it to Marshmallow as well and it works without a hitch (in comparison to my daily driver - Galaxy Note 4 which went really sluggish with Marshmallow). However, I have a strange problem which I'm unable to rectify. The earpiece volume on the phone has gone really low. This problem popped up sometime last October (even while on Lollipop), and I didn't worry too much about it as I had my Note 4 as a daily driver. But I'm now using 2 SIMs, so I need this phone to work.
The sound from the earpiece has become extremely low, and it is impossible to hear the other person when outside even with low traffic noises. I've tried tinkering with all settings/methods available, shutting off the noise cancelling mic, trying to clean the earpiece grille, performing a hard reset, but nothing helped. However, the volume is fine when playing audio through the speakers (I'm not sure through, I assume that the earpiece doubles up as a speaker - I may be wrong). Everything is fine with wired/wireless earphones though.
Is there a way I can tweak anything to make this better - I mean, all I want is the earpiece volume to be loud enough to be usable. The phone has been out of warranty for a long time, so I'm fine with rooting it. However, I'm a n00b (as already mentioned), and I need some guidance on how to do it. Also, I'm a bit wary of taking it to service, as firstly the phone is out of warranty and repair would cost a bomb surely, and secondly - I don't want to mess up the water resistance (not that I dunk it in water, but it's a nice to have feature).
Can anyone please help me out with this? Also, does anyone else have this problem?
Thanks
if you are rooted and have a working recovery try this audio mod http://forum.xda-developers.com/cro...-dontbelive-marshmallow-stereomod-v1-t3366065. It increases the speaker and earphone volume and i am using this mod on my z2 this is great.

Redmi Note 3 PRO (SD) No Sound/Audio

hi..just bought this phone about 2months, now i'm facing No sound/audio at all, here's some detail and if anyone of you any good hardware repair skills here, i need your help, as i believe100% it's not the software issues:
1. phonecall, on stock MIUI (NoROOT/customkernel,pure officialrom) its freeze/hang when dialling numbers - few second latter its rebooted itself. voice recording app won't work can't use the app as its error pop-up said, and sometimes i need to hard restart to use the phone again. and its gime bootloop and drained battery (4000mah cannot even survived for 7hour), even with no internet connections the battery still drain fast.
2. when someone calling me,there's no ringtones, even when i answering the call there's no sound at all, no musics sound, any audio files i play only hisssing/noise sounds i can hear just like feedback sound.
3. Unlocking Bootloader, replacing other rom the sounds completely disapear, no hissing, noise at all (CM,Mokee) and still phone app freeze/hang when i try make a phonecall,(reboot/hardreset)the only solution to make the phone back in usable state.
4. installing Citrus ROM, the sounds back but only hissing/noise sound on sometimes i can here the sound with some feedback issues. phone app works i can make a call without freeze/hang,no reboots, but i can't totally hear someone talk to me at all, but when i turn on the loudspeaker i can hear someone talk to me (with some annoying feedback sounds),
5. as i bricked it once and need to reach testpoint so i believe its not under warranty, seal already broken.
6.ordering the parts, connector charging board(which contain whole set new audio i guess hope can fix the issues, but just noticed that if that's part causing the no sound issues, its only fix the audio such as music,ringtones..not the front speaker(phone related still not repairable)
7. trying contact some friends which some understand about hardware told me, i break down the IC Audio so its imposible to repair/change that part since its directly micro-soldered to the mainboard.
anyone have same problem as mine?, or some of you have solutions for my problem please reply .thanks

Same problem as mine.
Even the video recording do not work too.
Is there any solution how to fix it?
I use it as ipa/od without ability to make / receives any phone call, so many ppl has the same problem here seems was Xiaomi's bad hardware components, which mine believes caused by sudden-removal audio/aux jack while its still playing the musics
anyone know the average price to fix the sound ic compared to the phone? maybe 10%, 25%, 50%, or above the price of the new units?
I have the same problem,, could any one tell me where I can buy the hardware (IC sound).
Plz tell me solution. My mobile mi note 3 audio problem, audio only listen Bluetooth.

Redmi NOTE3
I need audio IC for Redmi NOTE3 we're can I buy
hello.it is an old topic. i hope it be useful for anybody else. a few days ago My redmi note 3 pro kenzo was damaged by water. after that when I turned it on, logo of my custom ROM was appear and boot loop ... First I think it was for ROM or kernel. I installed another ROM with other kernels. I could turned on my phone and enter to user interface. but everything that was related to sound ( like : camera-music-call-headphone,... ) was not work at all. I searched a lot. I found out the problem is for Audio IC (WCD9306 Audio IC) this model. https://www.deviceparts.com/wcd9306-audio-ic-for-xiaomi-redmi-note-3-ori.html
it is used in Samsung mobile phone like S4. however you can buy it. but the main problem you can't change it by your own without tools . if you are familiar with hardware it could be useful: http://www.u2ugsm.com/blog/xiaomi-redmi-note-3-ringer-solution-jumper-problem-ways/
I think cleaning IC with cleaner or alcohol might be useful. good luck
Edit: After 4 hours I turned it on and sound is back! I just cleaned it by alcohol and cleaner. but I made mistake. a little bit of that alcohol-water liquid is entered in my LCD screen. I put it in warm place and hope it will get better.
