not sure why you're unable to remount system as read/write. i've never used root explorer.
the two ways to remount the system as read/write thru adb are:
adb remount
adb shell mount -o remount,rw /system /system
if you execute one of those commands, then you should be able to do the rest of the commands you need thru root explorer.
hope that helps!

If your using root explore when you go to system/apps in the top right hand corner it will be a little tab reading "r/o" which is read only. If you tap on that tab it will change to "r/w" which is read and write. That allows you to modify the system apps like to add or delete them or change permissions. After your done make sure to remount it as r/o then press menu and exit. Then reboot in order for changes to take effect.

[Q] Rooted or not?

Hi, I rooted my Vribrant, both ways (manually and with one click root). I installed terminal emulator. I tried the su command to check if I am root. The # appears normally. However I tried deleting a file with Root explorer, inside the system folder, and when I get back it's still there. I also tried deleting it manually from Terminal EMulator with these commands:
su
cd system/apps
rm Swype.apk
and I get this:
rm failed for Swype.apk, Read-only file system
I also tried:
su rm Swype.apk
and this is returned:
Permission denied.....
I also tried the exact same thing from adb shell (which I had to allow in superuser permissions program), but it gave me the exact same results. What's wrong? Am I doing something wrong? Thanks
In root explorer, try hitting the r/w button at the top and see if that works.

I know about the button. The strange thing is that inside system folder it grands me r/w permissions, and no matter how many times a press the r/o button it doesn't change. Still gives the results I said. However, besides root Explorer what's wrong with terminal emulator and adb?
I'm not 100% sure how to mount as root in adb. I wish I knew myself heh.
Did any of those root methods install the superuser app?

Terminal Emulator should return a "#" after typing "su"
Sent from my SGH-T959 using Tapatalk
From a terminal write
adb root. (will give root)
adb remount. (will remount system as r/w)
adb shell cp /system/app/swype.apk /system/app/swype.apk.bak
Adb shell rm /system/app/swype.apk
This link is what i used to use to gain rw permissions
http://android-tricks.blogspot.com/2009/01/mount-filesystem-read-write.html
Alternatively from terminal on the phone type
su
mount -o rw,remount -t yaffs2 /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
Assuming your sys partition is mntblock3

I tried the first method but it didn't work. When I entered adb root, it said "adbd cannot run as root in production builds". I searched a bit and found that I must have a rooted kernel for this to work. (I guess it's different from the root method I tried in "how to root vibrant").
Anyway the second way worked, where i replaced mntblock3 with stl9 for my phone. I tried the rm command and it worked! However as soon as I exited terminal, I couldn't delete other files. I had to retype the command. I can't do this everytime I need access in System folder. Why is this happenning? Does this have something to do with the fact that root explorer cannot change r/w to r/o mode while in system folder?
what if you open Superuser
Click on Root Explorer.
Click on Forget.
Open Root Explorer and grant Root Access and check to remember it.
work now?
Moved to Q&A, please post in the correct section.

No it didn't work. I also installed the latest version of SuperUser 2.3.6.1. But without a difference unfortunately.
What works for me, is installing sgs tools, and whenever I want to do write operations on system folder, run the appropriate script from sgs and then use root explorer......
Although I think there's something wrong? Why doesn't the mount r/w button work in root explorer, and why do I have to remount the file system through SGS tools, every time for it to work?
makes no sense to me either. Have you uninstalled RE and the installed it back granting root once reinstalled?
Yes several times.....
I am giving up. I just have to go through the whole process every time. I found some other people having this issue. I am on stock JI6 firmware. Maybe when I read a little bit more I will flash a custom rom.
Download and install Super Manager. Pretty handy program to use for Root users.
I'm not sure what the issue is,but mine does it too. I'm running the "unofficial" froyo JK2 build, flashed via ODIN,and I'm having the same issues. root works, root file explorer is stuck in rw,won't let me switch to ro,and it can't do anything to files in / or /system. manually remounting it from terminal or sgs tools works.

At least I am not the only one with this problem.... haha
I forgot to mention that I use Root Explorer version 2.12.2
When I try a custom Rom I will post the results....
^ why not get the update, .4 is the most recent build. Do you have an illegal copy?
It's not only root explorer. It happens with other file explorers too like android mate and super manager... Inside system folder whatever, I do doesn't happen unless I unmount and remount like before

WTF, how do you change system to read/write?

I'm using Root Explorer.
Everything I select the systems directory and check the "write" boxes and press okay, nothing happens. I still can't transfer files in there. I'm trying to change the bootup and startup audio sounds in the system folder.
Also, I'm trying to flash the new version of the MTM keyboard. I launch CWM through Rom Manager, and try to flash the zip file, but it says installation aborted. But I go to "advanced" and select "Fix Permissions," and try again, it installs successfully. But when I reboot my phone, my keyboard stays the same as the old one and the new version is no where to be found.
Any help is appreciated!
EDIT: Oops, accidentally posted this in the Themes and Apps directory, my fault.
"mount r/w to mount r/o"...the button on the top.
Sent from my SGH-T959 using XDA App
I've tried that, it doesn't work.
When I press "Mount R/W," nothing happens.
I hear the toggle, but the "Mount R/W" stays as "Mount R/W"
weirdly enough, when I'm in the / folder, the "Mount R/W" toggles to "Mount R/O", but not when I'm in /system/
It's weird, actually any other directory other than /system/ can be mounted as r/w, just not /system/..
i had the same problem... try eugenes ADB push FIX on it...
this worked for me... also if you are running the SuperC voodoo recovery screen ( RED ) try turning debug on... that worked for me
"We had are First Sleepless Night with the New baby Boy.... Between Trying Figure out what was Wrong & taking turns with the Wife Holding Aries, I tried Pushing File's & forgot adb push didn't work...
Now this Script originally is what I made for the Behold 2, but the Basic still works For the SGV..
Just mod the script if your using the userinit.sh
Using this script you can place the userinit.sh any place you would Like...
I hope ever gets Good use out of this & Please Enjoy!

this happened to me with root explorer
first are you selecting the mount r/w option on top of the root explorer
if answer is yes then you have the mounting issue on 2.2 roms follow this thread
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=846384
it fixed the problem for me, just be sure to select the correct zip i choose the wrong one first and my ext sd was shown as a cd, then reflashed the second one and it was solved. just flash with CMR
if this helped you please hit the thanks bottom
Try super manager its free and does the same thing. I had a problem with root explorer a while back. Eventually it worked fine again.

another easy way to do it is to just mount system as rw through adb.
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mtdblock3 /system
i have to do it every time i push new ringones/alerts to /system/media/audio
I was having same problem and fixed it by uninstalling and reinstalling root explorer. That did the trick for me.

Does anyone have any idea on how to get chainfire 3d to work?

When I try to install the drivers it says error could not write to /system

Install Root Explorer, open it and mount /system as RW. Then install chainfire3D, open it and install its software and plugins.
Then go back to root explorer and mount system as ro again.
I did that but my touchpad keeps freezing and restarting. Any ideas?

Flash CM7 again through CWM and it will mount properly. (dont wipe)

I'm not sure how to do this either. I was able to install the plug ins and when I go to default opengl settings, and pick a plug-in, nothing happens.
I was able to switch to r/w.
Do we need ChainFire Pro for it to take an effect? I select the plug-in and nothing happens.

[Q][SOLVED] Rooted, but can't mount system/app as RW

OK, this is a complete n00b question, but here goes anyway...
Have root, but I can't mount system/app in rw mode using Root Explorer or File Expert; keep gettting the message that it read-only. Tried abd to do chmod but can't change permissions there either.
Titanium is satisfied that I have root privileges as is File Expert. Did I miss something somewhere?
Thanks!
Make sure you have superuser installed.

Uh -- yeh.
SOLVED!
Found a post elsewhere that mentioned an app named "mount /system" in the Marketplace.
It worked! Its only function is to mount /system in rw mode, and it does it well.

The reason I suggested that is because when my NT did a factory wipe I couldn't mount r/w and it turned out the wipe had erased superuser but the device was still rooted. When I reinstalled it, the problem was fixed. I'm glad you found a solution though.
Code:
mount -o rw,remount -t ext4 /dev/block/platform/mmci-omap-hs.1/by-name/system /system
I had this happen once actually, randomly, where root explorer couldn't mess with r/o directories. I rebooted my book and turned off and then back on both USB debugging modes to get it to work again (in root explorer). I've had warnings come up when USB debugging turns itself off (after a reboot) from applications that require root warning me that it might not work correctly unless I had debugging mode on as well, so I'd imagine proper functionality for root explorer/permission modification relies on usb debugging being on. Since the nook turns this off (one or both usb debugging boxes get unchecked randomly on boots) it's a good thing to try.
Ok so the reason this is happening is because you are refuring to a link to remount the partition do
mount -o rw,remount /dev/block/mccblk0p8 /system

Make sure you are mounting /system as RW first. By default it is RO. If you have root explorer it's just easy as clicking the RW button but if not there is always terminal and a command you enter.

Terminal I mentioned to mount your system as RW. Why not edit your build.prop on computer and push it to your device in recovery mode.

Tried to do it with adb but it comes back to original one.
i was able to successfully change the build.prop file by using the file manager in twrp recovery.
i kept the modified file on my sd card, went into recovery, fired up the file manager, browsed to my sd card, selected the modded file, chose the copy option, then chose the /system folder as the destination. rebooted and the changed file stayed changed!
my device is rooted, bootloader unlocked, and s-on.
root explorer with r/w mounting didnt work for me...file would revert after reboot.
also tried "cp" command in terminal in recovery...didnt seem to copy successfully.
hope this helps!
