Updated changelog available at http://www.androiddoes.net/sonofskywalker3
Update:
Version 1.1 changelog:
Removed lockscreen and bootanimation as a default part of the ROM and added it into options. If you have a bootanimation you would like to be featured in the Blackhole Build Your Own ROM series please let me know.
Added a modification section where you can choose to change which app you are using, or to install additional addons. this will not wipe system, so you can choose only what you want. be aware that if you change apps with different filenames (for example choose ADW under modifications when you had launcherpro before) it will keep both, but if you choose on that's the same file name (for example the mesmerize contacts instead of stock) it will overwrite and you'll only have the one. I hope I have explained this well. I will be updated my scripts over the next few days to delete any other options that are installed so that there won't be any redundancy.
Version 1.2 changelog:
Added back Settingsprovider.apk to fix issue with FC when choosing Airplane Mode
Fixed Options:
Fixed script for Puzzle Lock, actually works now.
Fixed file name for POP/Exchange Email so it will download right
Replaced Stock Desk Clock with Mesmerize Desk Clock so voice search uses Google instead of Bing
New Options:
Added Haters Gonna Hate Bootanimation (no sound, but pretty funny)
Added Hiddenmenu.apk (if you don't know what it is, don't bother checking it)
Added SNS(Facebook Sync). Requires TouchWiz Launcher and Calendar, and one of the Contacts options.
Version 1.3 changelog:
Added Widgetpicker to base rom, faster interface and groups multiple widgets from the same program.
Removed MMS from base rom and added as a customization category.
Modified Build.Prop to allow OTA Update notifications
Version 1.4 changelog:
Added globalsearch.apk to allow searching of data on the device (Please let me know if this still doesn't work)
Added PhoenixPath's GPS fix (again, please let me know if this doesn't help.)

Notes: I will no longer be listing voodoo kernels with blackhole, because with the latest kernel updates by jt and geeknik I don't see them being as necessary as they were before, and for people who use ROM manager, but don't frequent forums like xda and modadroid.com they may not know switching from a voodoo to nonvoodoo kernel can cause issues. You can still download voodoo kernels from JT's section of ROM manager, or on XDA or modadroid.com
*Important*
I will no longer be posting updates to this thread. to keep up with the latest releases of Blackhole Custom ROM's please visit www.androiddoes.net/sonofskywalker3

Wow, do you ever take a breather in between all of your updates? I just got done flashing .6.
Any differences from .6 to 1.0?

haha. well i did stop for dinner. But seriously things will slow down now that i've lept my first hurdle. next step is to find a better hosting solution than dropbox.
the only changes are that I added back lcdtest.apk because without it the screen won't auto shutoff, and the networklocation.apk because it is necessary for gps. also i removed launcherpro since now that it's on ROM Manager you can choose which launcher you want.
I havent had any issues with the lcd not shuting off on .6. Also I dont care about the gps, so I will stick with the .6 version for now.
quick question, do we have to wipe if were coming from 0.5 to 1.0?
Blackmod enhanced seems to be broken. I get a corrupted zip error when downloading.
But the the S in the notification dropdown is cool!
Awesome job.
Loving it.
Need another option or two though. Gallery (Stock or AOSP), Email.apk...(Oh! Evolution font. Can't live without it...)
Also, blackmod download seems to be corrupted. (fixed... go to bed, dammit!)
Car Home is installing instead of ROM manager when ROM Manager is selected... tried it twice. Links might be fubar'd. No ROM Manager apk in /system/apps.
Yaup. Watched the install... It installs mesmerize_carhome.
Loving it so far. Keep it up! (and get some actual work done too )
I'm about to hit the install button. One quick question. I'm coming from the stock Tom running voodoo v2... currently disabled... should I remove it, and do I have to wipe data and cache?

hmmf i might try this if it actually has gallery and contacts now?
ok so I installed this rom from rom manager and now I can't boot into recovery through the rom manager, nor can I install another rom. anybody got any ideas
Edit, fixed it, wasn't under su
I'm about to give this a try, very excited about freeing up memory and extending the battery life. One question: is it possible to make vcast video work this? I'm one of the weirdos that pays $10/month (for the nfl and the office). I've had trouble with just about every custom rom I've tried.
Thanks for your work!

Where is the gallery..... I love everything about this rom
Edit. I found an app called justpictures, a little slow but gets the job done.
USB settings doesn't work. Is fcs the android process

I just checked this out on Rom Manager and saw how it works (selecting all of the custom elements) and I think it's a fantastic idea, especially if more options are continually added.
Thanks for the great work, keep it up.

Noticed the fc as well. No big, everything still seems to work. As for the gallery, just grab the stock gallery or gallery3d.apk from any of the other roms out there. (download, extract, copy gallery apk file to /system/apps and reboot)

A few items brought up overnight. Due to unforseen demand I maxed out my dropbox daily transfer limit, so i've had to upgrade to their paid service. This costs me $9.99 per month, so I've decided to add a donate link to my sig to try to offset this a little. Please feel free to use this rom or anything I ever do without donating, I'm not trying to make money off of developing, just trying to cover my costs associated with it.
The Gallery should be available in addons now, and i'll be working on vcast video today. I have fixed the issues with the blackmod enhanced theme, mesmerize contacts, and Rom manager and mesmerize car dock options being reversed.

Excellent. I should really start looking into getting my domain back up and running. I would love to host some of these projects... You guys shouldn't have to pay to distribute your work. That's just lame...
Maybe you could re-add the calendarprovider.apk back into your roms. It appears this is needed for calendar apps to sync with google calendar. Keep up the excellent work.

The touchwizcalendarprovider.apk is included with the TouchWiz Calendar option I've just added to ROM Manager addons. If you want to have the file available by itself for use with other calendar programs i'll be glad to add that as well.
I think having the provider.apk by itself would be a good option for those of us who use 3rd party calendars. Thanks.

I have added a calendars section where you can choose between touchwiz calendar (with the app and provider) or 3'rd party support (with just the provider). let me know if this works for you with a third party calendar app please.

I have added a vcast video option to the addons in ROM Manager. try downloading it. it worked for me up to the point where you have to subscribe, and since I don't i couldn't proceed. let me know if it works or not please and I will try to fix it if it doesn't. (you may need to also download the video player from addons, not sure)
Also for those wondering: the usb settings gave you the option of choosing between USB Mass Storage mode and Music Sync Mode. I left the Music Sync Mode out because I figured no one running a custom rom would use it. if i'm wrong it's real easy to add the package as an extra. let me know if any of you want it.
As soon as i got this phone I rooted it and flashed xtr rom because it looked reliable and stable. Which it was the rom was beautiful but i got the froyo bug and decided to move on to 2.2. I installed kaos froyo and love it but there are a certain things i miss specifically the htc contact app which allowed me to merge contacts from all my different sources and really minimize doubled up contacts. Is there anyway to get the htc contact app on a 2.2 rom without sense that doesn't involve flashing? Is there an apk or an apk for a similar contact app?
TLDR: Can i install HTC contact app on Kaos Froyo rom?

Unfortunately, there isn't any way of getting the HTC Dialer (which is what you're looking for) on a non-Sense based ROM. It would have to be ported, and noone has been able to do so. It may be hard or impossible without the original source code.
I have used Dialer One in the past, which is a lot more like the Sense Dialer. I don't know for sure if it has the feature you're looking for, but there's a free version on the Market. Check it out.
Edit: FYI in case you're curious enough to try putting the HTC Dialer on other ROMs anyway, forget it, I've already tried it. It's just not that easy.

What about xtr rom? It's a vanilla rom with the htc dialer. It might be sort of hybrid but it uses launcher pro (not sense) and the same dialer. I was kind of upset the htc dialer has so many little features that you take for granted until they are gone.

It is still based on the HTC framework, which is why so much of the HTC stuff is still present and works.
I really miss the HTC Alarm/Timer/etc app, too. Sigh...
Just flash xtrSense and switch to Launcher Pro or something.

I'm using Red Glass, Workshed's themed version of his FroShedYo v8: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=824160
I may switch to his Vanilla, just because it's based off a newer CM build.

I think he's hoping to get it or an equivalent on a 2.2-based ROM. As much as I like xtrSENSE and xtrROM, I like CM6.x-based ROMs because of the ease of access to toggle widgets in the notification menu, Froyo-native Apps2SD, and the Froyo-native USB tethering, which has been working much better for me than any other kind or method of tethering recently, and tethering is my only internet ATM.
I don't know if the OP likes the same things out of Froyo ROMs or not, but I would assume he doesn't want to go back to more stock for anything more than the HTC alarm clock and/or contacts.

Thank you for the help. Xtr sense with launcher pro is almost equivalently the xtr rom. You hit the nail on the head perfectly as well. I love the stability smoothness and just all around solidness of the xtrroms sense and not. I just feel like i'm missing out when i roll 2.1 there is not much but just a lot of little things above ones mentioned are big. I'm going to rock xtr again for a little then switch to a 2.2 maybe kaos again or possibly what you use and weigh out what i like about both. I would drop both options if we can get a daily use gingerbread though.
So I have done some searching here, and really haven't found the information I am looking for.
I used to run an old HTC Imagio, and unlocked it. Wife was pissed because it pretty much never worked right after that.
Now I am runnning the Thunderbolt, have been since its release. I have also gotten the OTA update to 2.3.4. and now I am thinking whether I should or should not root.
All I keep hearing is tethering is now free, and its faster. So what I am asking is more of a sales pitch. I would love for someone to tell me really the advantages to rooting, how easy it really is, what I must have in order to properly use a rooted phone, which ROMs offer what customization, etc.
I currently use GoLauncher, and its pretty smooth for me. I like customization, changing screens, changing how the launcher looks (icons, screen transitions, etc). I also like to switch launchers from time to time, and have a cracked one that I can only use if rooted.
So as someone that is on the fence of rooting, I would like a good discussion on the pros and cons of rooting, especially on what really needs to be done (superuser, etc), I hear I have to install custom radios for both CDMA and the other, really? Those are the things I need to know before going into this, because the wife doesn't need to call me and it doesn't work, or text me and I never get or can send texts.
So hope I am not asking for too much.
Thanks!
Rooting the ThunderBolt is really easy. I used revolutionary www.revolutionary.io be sure to read everything before trying that method.
As for functionality, pretty much all the ROMs for the thunderbolt are very stable and have little to no bugs.
There are many different types of ROMs to choose from. You have Sense 2.1, sense 3.0, sense 3.5, miui, and aosp. Just browse the forums and see which you might like better. Also be aware that sense ROMs need sense kernels, and aosp and miui need aosp kernels.
I will tell you that tethering seems to work best on sense ROMs.
Since you have the 2.3.4 ota, you shouldn't need to flash any radios.
Hope this helps with your choice.

Guys, another question regarding the "revolutionary" root method. There is a video and it shows that data (apps) are not deleted. Does that include contacts and other twitter and FB data?
Also, it indicates that you have to uninstall HTC Sync. When I reinstall it, will I have to reestablish connection to Outlook, or will it think nothing has happened to my phone?
I want this root to be as seamless as possible, so sync with outlook must be without a flaw.
And finally, if I do go this route, can anyone describe the different ROMS that are out there, what they offer, in terms of preinstalled apps, custimization, relative speed and ease of use, and level of bugginess or lack of bugginess.
Thanks again guys.

Revolutionary does not root. All it does is give you S-OFF (disables rom signature checking by the bootloader. After using revolutionary you flash a small rom update (.zip file) that gives you the su binary and the superuser application (which controls the apps allowed to have root access, without it any app could call su without having to ask first). It might also install busybox. Note that installing a different ROM will delete all your data which is why after you root the first thing you should do is install Titanium Backup so you can back up everything (app data, system data such as contacts, installed apps, and even system apps). Btw, the Pro version of Titanium Backup is definitely worth the money. The ROM I use (Ginger_BreadRock_V2.6_(2.11.605.5)) is a deodexed and semi-debloated version of the latest official rom with visual voicemail and backup assistant manually added back in (I have the deodexed BA and VVM .apk files if you want them).
Other apps you might want after rooting: LBE Privacy Guard (lets you block apps from accessing private stuff like SMS Messages, contacts, IMEI/serial number, and GPS location), SetCPU or similar app (underclocking to 300MHz while the screen is off really helps battery life) and imoseyon's leankernel (be sure to get the gb sense one). With leankernel and that underclocking option set I can get three days of very light usage (a few bluetooth phone calls a day) before dropping below 15% power.

I don't know what that deodex thing is, but I have heard that alot. I understand the debloated thing, thats always nice. I may have to wait until next december when my contract is up and I can renew. Might use that as a way to get the wife to let me root instead of buying a new phone.
She is very careful with her outlook, her contacts and calendar are her babies so to speak, so screwing that up is a big no no for me.
Thanks again for the information.
Revolutionary itself doesn't root our phone, by if you look, it gives you everything you need to root.
Deodex means there are no odex files, and in simple terms, it means the Rom is themable.

If tethering is a major bonus and one of the main reasons you would like to root all you need to do is run revolutionary and install wifi tether. Running revo will not delete anything from your phone or change any of your currently set up applications. Your contacts will remain, twitter and facebook as well. It merely gains S-off and installs superuser so you can run rooted apps.
It is really hard to explain what the different roms have to offer since they all offer so much over stock. I hate verizons back up assistant so I just made sure all of my stuff is sync'd with google so once you sign back into your phone it will automatically reload calendar, contacts, wifi settings, etc...
Personally I enjoy sense based ROMs, others love AOSP. Currently I'm running Infectedrom.coms Eternity Sense 3.5 and absolutely love it.
Customization on most roms is the biggest reason I chose to root. Sick of my phone looking like everyone elses. It is nice to have another tbolt owner notice your sceen and get jealous
Just curious how would your phone mess up your wifes outlook contacts?

Do you have a way of forcing your contacts and such to sync with google without having to re-enter your data from scratch?
Do this. Go to YouTube and search "how to root thunderbolt revolutionary". There's a few good follow-along-as-you-do-it-yourself vids with all the links to all you need to dl to use the revolutionary method.
If you go to gmail on a pc, go to contacts, and check them. If your phone contacts are there (they will be), they load when you log into your phone.

everyone here has great advice tips, the only other GREAT thing i can add is that after you ROOT you can use Titanium backup. save all your data on your apps so you can transfer to another device and pick up where you left off.
This is one of the biggest reason to root your phone. you'll learn other GREAT tricks the app can do but i'll let you figure that on your own.

Because, last time I unlocked a phone, I had used microsoft backup. So when I hard reset my phone after unlocking, it replaced everything on my phone like it should, but then when I synced with the desktop, it doubled everything on the desktop, contacts and calendar items. We had to remove the doubled items one at a time to get everything back to normal. I know she will kill me if that happens again with rooting this.

If it did happen google can clean duplicated contacts for you from the people app.
Do it. Sorry had to spam a thread to get to 10. Need to post in ROM sections.
Would it be possible to use the contact and dialer from an AOSP rom on a sense rom. I tried using the ones from CM7 and am having some issues.
Edit: I figured it out and have AOSP contacts and dialer now working on a Sense 3.0 Rom incase anyone wants it!
Not saying I particularly want it but why offer it but share no information on how to do it?
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
I did it that way because I didn't make the mod. The thread started out because I was having issues getting the AOSP contacts and dialer to work on my phone, so I was looking for help. After I figured it out I thought I would see if anyone was intreasted in this mod and I can send them the file or explain how they can get them. I used the contacts from CM7 which includes the dialer. If you use the dialer.apk from CM7 it will break your phone, Kills signal / service. I have the contacts pulled from that Rom if anyone wants it. I take no credit for it in any way.
im Interested!!! Hate the Rosie Dialer!!
I have a Rogers GSm version, dont know if that would affect anything
Here is the contacts apk. It is NOT flashable through recovery. Install using a file manager (like Astro) I did not create this so I take no credit for this. This came from CM7.

This is interesting. Many people including myself have wanted to have the option to integrate the aosp dialer/ contacts into a sense based rom since the good old Hero days but based on the way the two are integrated into Sense roms as a whole, this has never been possible.
I can't remember the technical reasons why, only that many concluded it wasn't much of a possibilty.
Anyway, if anyone else can confirm that we can now have these features integrated into Sense as the op states, that would be awedome.

Anyway, if anyone else can confirm that we can now have these features integrated into Sense as the op states, that would be awedome.

There are a few issues with using the ASOP contacts with a sense rom. For instance joining contacts will cause a FC. I run a customized rom with as much sense removed as possible. To achieve this I have modified the ASOP contacts to work better on sense. I've never released the modified contacts because I don't have time to support it. The features I use work fine now (for instance the join fc is fixed) ; however, I'm sure there are other issues and at the moment I have no time to resolve anything found.
If people are willing to live with what you get is what you get I can post my modified contacts tonight after work.
HtcDialer still needs to be installed. I can also post a version of this modded to hide the icon from the app drawer and to stop it from being used for certain functions (a convenience feature so I don't have to select the ASOP contacts as the default)

PSA: Guess what!!?? Mecha Rebirth is BACK! Well, not just yet, it will be back up tomorrow night, BIG THANKS TO ViperZ28 providing me w/the ota update to base off of! Unfortunately the sd slot in my TBolt is now dead so I will have to send builds through testers before posting them (only con of that is it'll take longer). ANYWAYS, back on topic, this thread will be used as an FAQ, if you are in the new thread, and you have a problem/question w/the ROM, you will post it here and it will be answered asap!
MECHA REBIRTH FAQ/SUPPORT SECTION:
Before updating to 4.0, you will need to update to 3.0 (see original mecha rebirth thread). Bluetooth, and PIE NAV have been fixed in 4.0, the 3rd party apps I was using for mms and contacts have been replaced w/functioning aosp apps, I have also implemented the AOSP phone app but you still need to use ics dialer to dial your calls, after you dial, you will see the aosp call screens. I am goin to look into some sensation xl and evo rom so I can find out what lines I need to add to the framework jar and res so we can get an APM.
Let's see how long it takes (not referring to a ROM either)...

Gonna flash from 2.0 to 3.0. What do I need to do to re-establish root?
Thanks for not giving up. I really like your AOSP direction. :good: I'm running 3.0 now.
I wonder if you could address the problem of having to unlock the phone just to answer a call? Related to that, the system seems to be ignoring the option of X minutes to delay lock after sleep. Mine locks immediately and during/after a phone call.
I'm glad you guys got a new base for your ROM.
I am going to lock this support thread only until your ROM is up with download link. Once that happens today (per your OP) PM me and I will immediately unlock it.
Thanks and have a nice day.
Moved to QA also already since that is where this belongs... Like my fellow mod said just shoot us a PM and we will unlock it whenever you get your DL up... Besides that where should be no talk of 3.0 rom in here since that one used the other base...
