Is it possible to make the transformer keyboard dock into an external battery pack for my htc desire?

I think maybe he means using it as a charger for his HTC desire.
It is "possible", however you will need some way to modify the dock so that it activates power when the pad is not docked but the usb cable is connected. Because as far as I know the USB device won't be active unless they keyboard is docked. Good luck.
Make cable
That is actually one smart idea. Unfortunately it will require you to make a special cable that hooks into the dock/keyboard where the tablet is inserted, that is the connector for electricity to the battery in the tablet. Seeing that you are in Taiwan I'm sure you can convince a manufacturer to make a cable like that, I think there might actually be a market for that, albeit kind of specific and limited.
How about the Transformer USB adapter that plugs into the dock port. here:
http://liliputing.com/2011/08/asus-...sb-adapter-other-accessories-coming-soon.html
then plug a SUB cable from your phone to the USB adapter. I don't know that It would work but just an idea.
I tried to use the dock to charge my cellphone while I was in Hong Kong. There is one major obstacle to overcome. The usb ports on the dock will only provide a charge when the tablet is docked and awake. The second the screen turns off, it stops providing a charge. What I did was set the transformer to never sleep (never turn off screen) and plugged my phone up while I slept. Drained my battery in my Transformer, but charged my cellphone, which was more important.

I have noticed the NT only charges when using the AC charger and not when connected to a PC like phones. It even has to use the cable it came with as normal micro usb cables do not work (not for charging anway). Is this right or is this posdibly a hidden setting somewhere I have missed?

The computer does not provide enough amps to charge it. The first day I got mine I plugged the usb into a phone wall charger and it indicated it was charging but didnt seem to be increasing charge. I left it overnight and when I woke up i checked the charge...it didnt budge. I looked at the two wall chargers. The phone charger is a 1 amp charger while the nook charger is 1.9amp. Considering a usb from the computer only provides .5 amps there is no way it will charge.
This is the same as the nookcolor. They use the same charger and have the same limitations.

In addition to the current difference, the cable that comes with the NC or NT has a different MicroUSB end. It is a little longer to reach the higher current pins. There are several discussions in the NC Accessories forum that go into the details.
The NC can charge via pc, as long as the usb hub is powered, or the usb ports are powered, with the provided cable micro usb cable.
Other tablets can charge over .5amp USB so it should work on the NT unless they intentionally designed it to be limited. The Lenovo ThinkPad tablet and iPad both worked via .5amp USB. Just very slowly (had to put iPad in sleep mode).
EDIT: iPad 1 for clarification, never owned the second.

I have a newer motherboard (Gigabyte Z68XP-UD4)
when I plug my Nook Tablet into the front USB, it doesn't charge. But I just plugged it in at about 80% power into the rear USB that was red and labelled "3x USB Power" and it charged WHILE I was transferring files.
I didn't know it was charging until I plugged it into the AC and it showed 100%.
I can confirm it with video evidence if you need it because I'm not one to spread misinformation.
My Giga X58A-UD7 will charge mine too. The option must be enabled in The BIOS in order for the additional Amps to be dispensed. And, it will only work on the onboard (rear) USB ports.
Am I correct in thinking that the USB Standard must include a provision for optional high power pins that may not be present in all USB cables - or chargers?
If I have a standard microUSB cable, can I use my 3x port to charge my NT or do I need to use the special longer connector cable that came with the NT?
Another poster said the Nook USB connector was actually longer, so the high power pins would reach the recessed ones.
Bottom line - don't assume just any cable will work.
Are thenook color and tablet chargers the same? im looking to pick up a spare on ebay,
It's the same thing as the ipad. It will say not charging but it actually does just reaaaaaaaaaaally slow.

They appear to be the same or at least work the same. I have one charger downstairs and one upstairs and the tablet and color charge fine on either one. Just make sure to use the B&N cable, unless you want to wait a while.
So does anybody know where we can pick up chargers cheap? I already have like 5 micro usb chargers and it sucks I cant use them.
AFAIK the NT and NC use the same power supply. My NC with CM 7.1 draws about 600-700 milliamps (according to the Battery Monitor Widget). I have successfully charged it from a PC using a standard micro USB cable. Here's the catch:
- when you connect the tablet to the charger it will turn on. Power down the tablet completely. It will then charge, but takes about 12 hours.

Has anyone tried out something like this with the Nook Tablet?
From what I've read on Amazon, this thing is sort of lightweight. I was thinking with a slight modification to the bottom of it to add more weight, that it could be a workable docking stand for the Nook.
From what I've read, standard USB cords do charge the Tablet, they just don't charge it as fast as the super nook usb cord...
I have tried half a dozen AC adaptors and cables and the *only* cable I've found that will charge the Tablet is the cable that came with the device.
I'm going off the Settings->Device menu where it tells you if the device is "discharging", "not charging", or "charging".
The Nook Simple Touch AC adaptor will charge the Tablet but *only* when used with the stock Tablet cable.
Plugging the Tablet into the USB port of my iMac using any of my non-stock cables simply changes the status from "discharging" to "not charging", but the charging dialog doesn't come up. It's certainly possible that it's actually charging at this point but at so low of a rate that the device doesn't detect it.
It's also interesting that even though the stock iPad AC adaptor has a higher output than the Nook Simple Touch adaptor (1 amp versus .85 amp), the device will not charge with the iPad adaptor but will charge with the Nook Simple Touch adaptor.
To date I have tried the following adaptors:
Apple iPad - didn't charge
Nook Simple Touch - charged
Nexus One - didn't charge
Stock Nook Tablet - charged
and the following cables:
Nook Simple Touch - didn't charge
Nexus One - didn't charge
generic - didn't charge
Nook Tablet - charged
So to summarize, the Nook Tablet *cable* is the *only* cable I tried that will cause the device to recognize that it is charging. And the Nook Tablet AC adaptor and the Nook Simple Touch AC adaptor are the only two *adaptors* that would cause the device to recognize that it's charging.
As has been noted by many others the extra length of the connector on the stock Tablet cable appears to have something to do with initiating the charge as none of the other cables I've tried even come close to being as long.
Hmm, that's not what I observed. Using a Micro USB cable which came with a Blackberry Curve 8520 works for me. The lock screen on CM7.1 shows charging as soon as I plug it into my PC. I'll check how fast it is charging and report back later.
BTW: The PC has a Gigabyte GA-P67A-UD3-B3 mainboard with Gigabytes special "On/Off Charge Technology" enabled, see http://www.gigabyte.us/products/product-page.aspx?pid=3765#ov
See my post isn the NT 12pin USB Cable post (it is #17 on page 2) for an explanation as to why most cables and some adapters do not work with the Nook Color/Tablet
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=20842376&postcount=17
Thanks for the hint to your post. I just checked the charging with my Blackberry cable and in 2 hours the charge only increased by 10% (or exactly from 52 to 63% in 125 min). So without the Nook cable you get only trickle charging.
Nook Color charger does it.

I have never used the Nook tablet or cable to charge it. How did I do it...
I have a nook color one, and have used that cable and charger. I was just to lazy to unwrap the new one, just used the old one.
Hello,
my Prime does not charge at the moment. Neither in the dock nor with the charging cable.
I can connect it to the computer, i also charges there, but very slowly.
I just unlocked the prime and flashed AndroWook ROM.
What can I do?
Do you have another charger box? - It seems that your USB cable is good but possibly that the box that cable plugs into is bad or somehow defective, see if you can either A: Borrow someones charger box or if possible buy another one and test it to see if it works. IF it does work keep the charger or return it and possible contact whoever you bought your prime from and ask for a new charger.
It's most likely the charger box because the same thing happened to me. I am currently using my old cellphones usb charger. It doesn't show it as charging because it's like 5-10 volts instead of 15, but it still charges, just takes longer.
i have this tablet for a couple days now, when i plug the power adapter to the mains the power adapter gets really hot.
does anyone have the same result or is just normal? i know that the adapter obviously will get hot, but it seems a bit to hot, just the adapter the usb cable is fine and so is the tablet
Its normal. If it gets to hot it shuts off. I hear you have to put it in the freezer to attempt to bring it back.

well, i just dont want to wake up one morning and find the all lot burned.
but it does get really hot
Noticed the same thing with mine. I'm actually on my second pad for other reasons, but I didn't notice the charger getting as hot with my first one. But it only seems to get hot when actively charging. I've checked it after letting it sit still plugged in, but after it finished charging and it was fine.
I just try not to leave it charging if I'm sleeping or going out. Although, I forgot to unplug it this time...

No. Other threads in this forum tell you why.
the reason the charger gets so hot is it's 15 volts
and it takes minimum 12 volts for the tablet to kick into charging mode
so to answer your question
a usb port does charge the tablet, but usb is only 5 volts
so it will not show charging
and it will probably take 24 hrs to fully charge
Mine gets hot while charging but once it hits 100% it cools back down. I don't charge it while sleeping for this reason. Also according to the manual the PC will charge it bult as previously mentioned it takes longer. The tablet must be powered off when charging this way or it won't charge.

Same as other itt, it will heat up when charging, but if it's left in the wall unplugged from the tab/dock it cools back down.
Perhaps it needs 12v for full charge speed, but the 300 also trickle charges when plugged into a computer USB port.
i have notice that, when it finishes charging, that just cools down, i was just wondering did i get a faulty one, but as ye say its normal
thanks for all the replys
Luca
even there the charger gets very hot, so it is normal, also, we are going to have very hot temps these days, (40°C here)...
just be sure to not plug it near easy flammable things!
ciao
Yes we have noticed the charger gets very hot might have something to do with fast recharge time the device has

Good evening,
On my charger i notice it is wrting : "output 5v--2A or 15v --1.2A"
This mind that i can use the charger for any phone that charge usualy wiht 5V ?? Do the charger "swap" the voltage by him self if it's not connect to the tablet ???
I don't want to burn my HTC, but to have one charger for the tablet and the phone will be good when travelling
Thanks

The charger that comes with the Transformer is dual-purpose. If you plug in a Transformer tablet, it'll output the 15V to rapid-charge your Transformer. If you plug in a USB device, it'll output 5V at 2A to rapid-charge your USB device.
If you're wondering how it can tell the difference, Pin #7 on the USB3 Transformer cable is grounded -- this is how the charger can tell the difference between a Transormer and an ordinary USB device.

In fact the charger of Asus is quite tricky. I haven't found any substitution, only stock charger can be used.

It's not a non-standard connector -- it's a USB 3.0 connector.
If you use a USB 3.0 extension cable, it will work. If you use a non-USB 3.0 extension cable, the charger won't see that pin 7 is grounded, so you'll just get 5V instead of 15V. There's no bi-directional communication between the two.
The Transformer will charge when it sees 12V to 15V on what's typically the 5V pin.
The Asus charger will output 15V (earlier units were 12V) when it senses pin 7 is grounded.
Also, if you'd like to build your own power supply -- get any old female USB connector, and send 12V to 15V on pin 1 instead of 5V, and you've got yourself an Asus Transformer charger. Just don't plug anything else into it, since there's no safeguard to prevent 12-15V going into a 5V device. I've painted mine orange so I don't mistake it.
Hi, my Transformer pad won't charge normally when I connect it to the power adapter direclty - it doesn't show it's charging (though I can tell it is, because after some half an hour it had 2 % more of battery)... can it be that the charger doesn't recognize the tab and gives only 5V? Why? It works normally when I charge it on the docking station (through the power adapter), and the same cable works normally when I use it to transfer media to the pad from the PC...
P.S. When conneted to the power adapter directly, the orange light on the power button of the pad doesn't go on... it only goes on when the pad is on the dock and the power adapter is plugged into it.
Any ideas?

Good info to know, Krhainos. Thanks for sharing that with us. I've been wondering about using the Asus plug for other USB devices I have and the information you supplied answered those questions. :good:
So I have this issue where my dock is unable to charge. When I plug in my tablet on its own, it charges just fine (though the little light to indicate as such does not seem to work). When I plug the dock in on its own, it doesn't charge, and the little indicator light does not shine, either. When the tablet is connected to the dock and I plug it in, the tablet charges, but the dock does not. I am fairly certain it is not the dock because I have bought two different docks and the problem was present both times (first dock was refurbished, second one is brand new). Seeing this problem twice is extremely frustrating and I don't know what's wrong. Any help is much appreciated!

Never heard of that one but applying some logic:
1. The dock should charge if the power cable is plugged in to it even without the tablet connected (i.e. the dock can charge by itself). Hooking it up this way eliminates the tablet as the source of the problem since it isn't hooked up. So the tablet is not the problem
2. Therefore the problem has to be either the dock, the cable, or the charger.
3. You already tried using a different dock (the second one being brand new) with the same result, probably eliminating the dock as the problem (as you already indicated).
4. That leaves the charger or the cable. Do you have another cable you can swap in?
I have Exactly the same problem.. My cable charges the tablet perfect but not the dock.
I plug the cable charging the dock overnight and nothing, cero charge. But if I leave charging the tablet it charges perfectly.
Now. I also notice that when I connect the tablet to the dock it says " change to Asus keyboard for better consistency " How do i chage this?
