Okay, so, I got my Photon replaced yesterday for wonky vibration, and that's working as it should. And, the phone doesn't have the same creakiness as the previous one, so that's a plus.
However, I now find that this one has a rattle that I've narrowed down to the camera. Basically, if I shake the phone (lightly) towards and away from you with the phone (not side to side, if you get my meaning), then there's a rattle in the general vicinity of the camera. The clincher is that there's an audible click when turning on the camera, and the rattle is no longer there. Turn the camera off, and the rattle returns.
Anybody else have this? I'm guessing it's the autofocus mechanism engaging, but I wouldn't have expected it to be loose when it's not turned on. And, I don't remember my previous Photon doing this.
Edit: this is not meant as a dig against the Photon. I love mine--it's arguably the best phone I've ever owned, so far. Fast, great build quality, I love the screen (easily viewed in sunlight, in particular), and decent enough battery life. I just want to know if my Photon is defective so that I can get it replaced or not--by itself, the rattle is hard to notice and not at all a problem.
Are you sure its not the battery slightly moving? I thought i had the same problem and it was the battery. Also get the clicking noise at start up. I think thats normal.?

Nope, it's absolutely something in the camera. Here's how I know: in the process of gently shaking the phone, I can hear the rattle, turn on the camera and hear an audible click, the rattle stops, turn off the camera, and the rattle immediately starts again.

So, you have a click in the area of the battery when you start up? Do you get a click when you start your camera app (hold the camera to your ear and start the app)? Because if you get the click when your Photon boots, don't get it when the camera app starts, and don't have the rattle...

Excuse me? I hear a noise in my phone that I've not heard on other phones I've owned, and that I don't remember hearing with my previous Photon, and so I post a question on a forum asking if others have heard it, and I get castigated for it? Seriously?
To keep the thread on track, I take it you hear the noise as well with your Photon? Because all I want to know is if it's normal for the phone (i.e., a preponderance of Photons exhibit the effect), and if it is, it's not a biggie. If it's not normal, then it could indicate a problem that could cause issues down the road.
Would it be so hard to simply answer the question asked? Yeesh.

Incidentally, a note: mine is loud enough to easily hear from arm's length in a non-quiet room (i.e., in the living room while my family is yapping). Again, not trying to make a mountain out of a molehill, but is yours THAT loud? Some other references to this on other forums seem to imply that it's much fainter than mine...

With all the praise for the solid construction of this device I was surprised to hear mine rattle slightly when setting it down on the sofa.
Try holding your phone in your right hand and tap the top edge at the rear with your right index finger.
Does yours rattle too?
Dont have the device yet, but its not surprising to hear that. Although Samsung has done a wonderful job with utilizing space to the maximum, it is plastic after all.
Its surprising to me. A top end device like this should not rattle!
i'd bet any amount of money its the auto foxus mechanism in the cmaera lense. every phone i've owned does this when i set it down on a hard surface. my n1 which is solid does it as well.
only way to prove it is attempt to take a photo and shake the phone to simulate the rattle. while the camera turns on the auto focus mechanism, it is no longer "loose" and the rattle will briefly go away. once the photo is snapped the focus mechanism goes back to idle/loose position, so it will then rattle.
Only rattle i have is not a rattle just the noise of hitting hard plastic .Same noise on SGS1

I think you're right. I've done what you suggested with varying success in changing the pattern of the rattle when constantly tapping the phone whilst touching different areas of the viewfinder.
Ok, maybe this is the auto focus mechanism but is it right and if it is why does it affect some and not others?

I get the same with the back cover off. If I apply gentle pressure to the camera lens it does lessen the rattle a little.
I know we don't go round tapping our phones as a rule but I'm not happy at this.

More than likely (as with nearly all audio / visual imperfections people find) is that some people have better eyes or ears, or a much quieter environment. Try going to downtown Tokyo and even hearing your phone, let alone a rattle. Meanwhile up in the Drakensburg mountains here, I could probably hear a stone dropping at over a kilometer away.
Less likely is that your phone has a looser camera than others - there are always imperfections in manufacturing, and you might have hit the bad end of the spectrum with the lenses being too small for the holder. If this is the case, a replacement would definitely fix it.
But more than likely it's the first case.
I appreciate what you are saying Ryan but in all honestly, I think it my case it's the second scenario.
I don't go looking for faults but I do expect a premium device with a premium price tag to feel like such. This rattle totally spoils it for me and with a few other niggling little doubts I had about the phone (mainly personal preference) this was the push I needed to prompt me to return the handset.
I won't be getting a replacement. Don't get me wrong, the phone is a very nice phone and is probably the best Android out there currently but again, personal preference and a few little niggles means it's not for me.
Great for those that have no rattle, enjoy your devices as I am sure you will.

Sorry to hear about this 'rattle' on your unit...why not try at least another unit to see if that 'rattle' is also present there, especially if you think you might have gotten a defective unit...
You seem a bit to be quick at dismissing the device. Almost like you just waited to find a reason to get rid of it.
In any case, I hope I don't have that problem on mine.

well to me its normal since i've explicitly noticed the rattle in every phone i've owned, and learned a while back that it was the auto focus mechanism. so it all depends on your personal opinion i guess, but my hunch is that if exchanged every other one would do it as well. who knows though....

No not at all. There are a few things that I don't like about the SGS2 that had me considering returning it before I even noticed the rattle - this is just what cemented my decision to return it. As said previously though, the annoyances I have with it are down to personal preference and comparison to other devices I have owned.
I'm not in the 'business' or picking faults with something for the sake of it, regardless of brand, I just want quality when I pay a quality price and to me at least this rattle makes the whole thing feel cheap.
Remember those two important words, personal and preference!

I guess I see your point.
I was hoping it was a defective unit rather than a general problem with the SGS2 since I hadn't heard about the rattling.
If I noticed something like that on mine, I probably would be bothered too.
yes i agree too. if it's a defective unit, just exchange with another one while it's still under warranty.
just keep that in mind. there are no other devices out there that can match with SGII at this point. What is your second choice, if I may ask?

Good question! I don't have one. It would possibly have been the Nexus S but for the irreversible problems with freezing and lock ups - mainly for the feel / size of the handset rather than its features.
I think I will wait a while now ...

metal back cover will be released anytime soon. i was thinking about ordering one when i get my SGII in US.
Long story short, new company doesn't allow cameras in their facilities and I'm having serious Thunderbolt withdrawals.
I was wondering if anybody had ever removed the cameras from their Thunderbolt and the phone still worked after the "surgery."

But that guy is actually just tearing the phone apart. Is there a way to get to just the cameras without pulling the whole phone apart?

Go take a look at the FCC approval photos Adrynalyn posted... Not only will you be taking the phone apart, you'll be taking it apart to the BONE. I'm also pretty confident you'd destroy the phone in the process.

As for your other question, sometimes security will sweep the entire building/staff, just in case. In those instances, if you're caught with a cameraphone, you're getting fired.

I think you'd destroy the phone because that camera isn't just a simple surface mount device like the power or volume micro-switches. It's an entire 8MP camera in a VERY tiny box. To kinda give you an idea how those things are mass produced, a solder paste is applied sort of like one might silk screen a shirt. Then the individual components are placed in their correct locations. Finally, the entire thing is baked in an oven to melt the soldier paste and adhere the components. If you want to see what I'm talking about, go to Qualcomm's website and look at the physical interface for the Snapdragon chip. Assuming the cameras is mounted in a remotely similar way, you're going to destroy the device removing them. Additionally, the FFC also functions as both a brightness and proximity sensor. Removing it would have consequences that would be difficult to predict.

Would filling over it with some sort of hard/opaque/sticky/permanent adhesive substance suffice? Something like putting epoxy or something over the lens so it renders it no longer useful.

That might work for the rear camera, but the FFC needs to function correctly to control screen brightness and proximity.

I dont know about that. Very few android phones have a front facing camera and they function just fine. Besides you can manually adjust brightness. The proximity sensor also has nothing to do with the camera. It's located under the speaker for receiving calls near the LED.

I was wrong. You're right about the prox sensor. Still, the devices that lack the FFC use a light sensor instead. I'd go nuts trying to adjust the screen all the time. If it were completely removed, there's still no promise the screen would even light up.

I have searched Google, which is how I got that first link with the teardown. If you guys think it's unwise to take out the cameras after looking at that, please say so. If you're making assumptions about the necessity of the cameras, take a look at the link.

Functionality aside, simply how that big one on the rear is mounted would dissuade me.

It's your phone, but I wouldn't mess with it unless I knew what I were doing with it.
Remove the camera apps, you can't take a picture with it if the application to take it has been removed. (i'm sure the company won't believe it, but it is a solution)

If only it were that simple. I didn't believe it at first, but people get fired for having camera capable phones even if they don't have a battery in or near the phone. They're really strict on security.
Go to Wal-Mart & get a cheap Go Phone and some mins . If it has a camera , destroy that one .
Okay, guys, talk me down from the ledge here. I have an otherwise perfect Photon that has a rather loud camera rattle. I can hear it when I pick it up and put it down, and when I put it to my ear for a call. I try to ignore it, but it just keeps rattling JUST enough to remind me it's there.
Now, I know it's not a problem, doesn't affect the phone's performance, isn't going to result in failure, etc. But, my OCD doesn't allow me to ignore it. Tell me I'm crazy, that yours does the same and is just as loud, and convince me to stay with the Photon and not give the SGSII a try. Because of course I experienced nothing but horrible GPS and Bluetooth reliability with my Epic, along with questionable call quality and painfully long update cycles--all of which (so far) the Photon has demonsrated it doesn't suffer from. Samsung shouldn't benefit from my neurosis.
Consider this a voluntary intervention. I need help. I try putting the Photon in the car dock and just relax and enjoy the lack of hiss and seamless operation, and the speed of the phone in general, and the great screen performance in the SoCal sun. But that rattle--it haunts me.

its the battery. take your battery door off and you'll notice the battery shaking. its nothing to be worried about if you exchange it the next one will do the same thing if you are really worried about it put a sticky note in there or something to have it fit more snugly.
I have it and it does not bother me. A suggestion is get a case like otterbox and see if that might drown it out enough for you.

My battery moves but there is a cushion that keeps it in place. The rattle stops when i turn on my camera....so explain that one please.

I know, I know. Hopefully it's clear that my post was 99% tongue-in-cheek. The 1% that's serious is that it really does drive me batty, even if I "know" it's not actually a problem. I suppose I really just wish Motorola hadn't bought a camera that's designed this way. Some people (like me) are really bothered by rattles and such in devices that are expected (rightly or wrongly) to not make such noises.

Just be glad you didn't get the EVO 3D from what I understand its much worse on that device - perhaps double the cameras double the noise

Maybe this has been a topic, maybe not. Haven't seen too much discussion about it, so I thought I would create a topic about it. This is more of a general discussion. There definitely is a bit of controversy of the look of the Droid x2, at least, in my head.
The opposing views being that I can understand Motorola's desire of not wanting any major design changes. On the other hand, where the hell is my camera button?! Sometimes I understand, sometimes I don't. I work with a lot of people, obviously, cause I'm a business owner, and almost everyone looks at my phone and says, "oh yeah, I used to have a Droid X," or "my brother has a Droid X." Explaining to them that this isn't a Droid X it's a Droid X2, usually gets no where, no just don't understand.
Thoughts? What's your opinion? I think they should I have done something a little different besides the battery cover to distinguish a difference. Like put "x2" next to Motorola at the top or something.
To be honest there's only two design changes they need to make on this phone.
1.) Soft-touch menus buttons.
2.) Physical camera button.
...if they kept everything else the same I wouldn't care. Although if it's possible to get rid of the hump I wouldn't mind that either. I wasn't too fond of it when I purchased it, but I grown used to the hump.
I hear ya. My coworker has an X, and if you put them side by side, you can tell the difference, albeit minor. Screen color/cover is different, plus ours is black and the original is more grey.

Yeah, a camera button would have been great... This is actually my first Moto phone ever and I love it! I really don't understand why they removed the camera button... It is such a pain in the neck to try and take a picture of urself without opening the settings menu... The search button hack camera was a great attempt that kinda wore off because it wasnt the default camera.... I really miss the widescreen pics in eclipse but it seems Nitro has it figured out.... Now if someone could just redirect the onscreen button to the search button that would be amazing!

Now they could have designed a better one, but the way the camera was designed anyway, it was just poor design, it was a little chip that sat on gold connectors (literally sat there) on the main board. So rather than fix the problem and make a major design change, they just plain removed it.
Don't get me wrong, amazing phone. Just wanted to discuss the design, I wish they would have made it a bit different.
And I get ya on the buttons, I too wish they were soft buttons. What would have been a cool distinguishing feature!
I kind of like it though. People are like "Oh, a Droid X!" ....."No, no my friend, let me show you what's under the hood..."

I heard of this on reviews comparing the phones, but I don't personally have this problem because I have a black-rubbery cover over the phone, and the cover makes the buttons very easy to press because it makes them more raised.
It's much easier to press them through the cover versus holding the phone naked.

Well that makes a lot of sense. I still prefer the physical button (fixed), but it's not like it's going to make-or-break me buying a phone or most people anyway. They probably saved a lot of money just removing it.

I came from the OG Droid too, but I still prefer the soft-touch. Although I've gotten used to the hard-keys.
It took me like 1-2 weeks to get used to the menu/back button being switched. I think I mis-hit those buttons hundreds of time for the first two weeks. I go to press back and I open up the menu. I go to open up the menu and I press back.
Definitely Miss The Soft Keys From My OG Droid. The Battery Cover Is Horrible, Mine Keeps Falling Off Like It Doesn't Have Any Resistance Anymore. Speaker Is WAY To Small.(Rear Not In-Call One) I Don't Mind The Pentile Screen, Sometimes I Notice It, But For The Most Part I Forget. No 1080p Recording Wth? And It Doesn't Even Playback 720p. The skipping music has baffled me. Since out of the box I've been able to listen to V0(VBR) MP3s without any skipping...ever. After I rooted, no skipping, after I flashed a custom ROM, no skipping.
There is a script that apparently claims to fix the skipping music. But of course you have to be rooted for it to work.
I do know Motorola knows of this issue and they do plan to fix it I believe. But for whatever damn reason I've never had the problem ever.
It Will Play My MP3s Fine, When Playing On The Web Browser Is When It Skips. Connected To Wifi Also.
Wish the camera was better and also the screen. I really don't miss the physical camera button, but I do miss my Droid's soft keys. The ones on this really click loudly and it's annoying.

What about Google Music streaming? Or are you a member of that even? When I use Pandora it works completely fine.

Every music player I've tried had skipped at one point or another. The only time it was fixed was on froyo with the supercharger script. Went to GB and it started again, even supercharged or with naven's scripts.

Not A Member Of Google Streaming. I Use PlayerPro As My Media Player. I Stay Away From Online Playing Now Because Of It. Believe It Or Not My YouTube App Works Flawlessly. Thanks For The Input About G.S. I Will Look Into That.

As an engineer, I would like to mention that the time it takes to validate a design and approve it for production is less when using a preexisting design. While I agree with including a camera button, I think it was a cost reduction process...
I had a professor who was on the original design team for the droid x... He says that motorola mobility is a mess in terms of design. They have ten guys who are nay sayers for every one guy who actually produces anything useful. Welcome to six sigma...

OK. I got my ICS update from Rogers and this smartphone picked up its speed. Fun!
Battery life is about the same - poor but I've learned to live with it. Extra batteries!!
However, I can't stand the 'phone' function of this smart phone. This might sound like me bashing Galaxy note but I swear to you this is a legitimate issue I'm having with this device. So bear with me and please help me if you can.
Issue:
Often when I dial someone and put the phone against my face, the phone buttons on screen will get pressed by my face. This is especially worse if I had keypad screen activated than regular dialling screen.
This is really a big issue especially when you are trying to get pass the automated system because after you input the correct choice, your face will start pressing all kinds of button eventually the automated system tells me they can't understand my response.
(I try to get by with speaker or headset but that's not always the available option. I often need to put the phone against my face, the traditional way.)
No other touch screen device had any issue with my face/skin. Is my galaxy note's proximity sensor broken?
FYI- I noticed when I was on stock GB, the phone always had this issue where when I take the phone away from my face, it took about 2 second for the screen to comeback on. Sometimes it blinks couple of times, not knowing whether screen should be on or off. Honestly, I can't confirm that this is gone since ICS update... only had ICS for short time.
But now I'm having a issue of pressing all kinds of button while talking to someone. This isn't fun for me or for the person on the other line.
With iPhone it was really simple:
close to my face -> screen off
away from my face -> screen on
I need this to work
You can test the proximity sensor by holding your finger over it. Take the phone away from your face when you're in a call and put your finger over the proximity sensor to see if the screen turns off.

I haven't had any problems with my proximity sensor, at all.

Hey thanks for the reply. I forgot to mention I'm one of the user who is also having issue with smart screen off.
It could be type of case I'm using or the app also but now with phone issue I described in the previous post makes me think it's the device.
Also I read from the app review by users and many Note users trying to use this app are complaining it's not working for them....
I swear some people think xda is their own personal journal.

try making a call and putting your finger near the proximity sensor, just right of the speaker. If the screen does not turn off, you probably have a defective phone and should get it replaced.
Yea, seems that if you post positions that are NOT exactly what others believe, you're just being a whiney pain in the butt, where as the general discussion forum is for just that GENERAL concerning the device. There are MORE of us that were true believers of this device until Samsung & AT&T put out software that completely disables features and makes certain features of the phone worthless. NOTHING that they (AT&T/Samsung) leaked or released for ICS for this phone has given reliable GPS functionality.

AT&T is shipping me an HTC One X given I've had 3 different Samsung devices in under a year and ALL have been crippled by software updates from AT&T/Samsung. So not MY problem they can't update the device and keep it functional. Not taking referb, not using my warantee, NOTHING like that, they have replaced with NEW devices. So now I have a Skyrocket, Note, and the One X all in under a year and didn't pay for anything but the ORIGINAL phone on my contract, the Infuze 4G.
Just be firm, courteous, and you can get results from AT&T. It's well documented some of the issues since ICS (Especially the GPS), and they are seeing that the software isn't ready for prime time yet.

hey, so the proximity sensor isnt working for you for sure? Also it doesnt happen to be a white note does it? Im asking because some iphone white replacement screens do the same thing. Has you screen been replaced? have you tried a factory reset? Im just thinking here..
Some people just have no life. They give you some lame comment implying you shouldn't be posting or your post was a waste of space here, yet their own post was utterly useless and takes up space without contributing a thing. Pay no attention to such asshattery.
I can't say that I've had any issue like this with my Note. Seems to work exactly as expected. It definitely sounds like an issue with the sensor since it appears to have affected you across different OS versions. If I were you I'd bring the phone in for repair.

My GPS has suffered too. I use my phone to track my cycling rides and sometimes it takes 5-8 mins to find my location. This is after the ics update. After the initial locate it is fairly good using My Tracks .
Haven't had any problems with the proximity sensor.
I have had blackberries, hd7, hd2, radar, iPhones, and more. I haven't had a phone I enjoy as much as this one.

I have a black note without any screen protector... I just tried finger test someone suggested above and it works fine. One thing g I noticed was when speaker is on, and the proximity sensor becomes inactive.. But I think that's normal. So my phone's sensor is ok?

If the sensor is working, then just aim the top of the phone to touch your face first. If you touch the middle of the screen before the proximity sensor registers, then it won't work.
OP, don't mind the smartasses. Some people can't help cluttering the forum with their dumb editorial comments, lol.
Anyway, I never had the problem you describe on Gingerbread, and haven't seen lots of reports, so I'm guessing it's probably a wonky sensor.

Lucky for me.....I have a bluetooth and don't worry about these issues. I know what you're saying though, sometimes if I move the phone from my face and back quick it gets to where the screen won't turn back on during the call unless i wipe my finger across the sensor.
i believe its fine unless you had to cover a great amount of area. it is such a large phone to with at times. you use it on the right side of your head? yea i would do more test runs to insure that you are covering it up. i think the speaker thing is normal though, but i never use it so can't be certain. btw the issues the white iphones i had was solved by taking a little piece of electrical tape and poking two small holes and putting it over the prox sensor. the issue was that the glass was letting in too much light in. the sensor was still doing its job, but couldn't properly because the amount of light being let in.
