villain + ninphetamine heating problem - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Howzit.Heres a question for anyone who like me has the villainROM 2.4.2 that comes with the ninphetamine 2.0.4 kernal installed running XXKG6.Has anyone else noticed the temp of the phone when charging?.Mine charges at between 44°C and 48°C but when not plugged in runs slightly warmer than usual.Didnt do this with the CF-Root kernal though.Been searchin but cant find any complaints about heating problems so maybe its just my unit.Anyway if anyone else has had this issue id like to know.cheers.

The kernel has the charge limit set a bit higher it will go hotter when charging.
And as far temp when being used, that depends what you are doing with the phone at the time, i dont remeber the phone getting two hot with that combo myself.
Try using better battery stats to see what's using processor time.

ninphetamine kernel has been tweaked for overclocking, and overvolting+undervolting. It also has current increased which is why it is hotter when charging.
Personally, I'd stay away from ninphetamine kernel unless you are looking to overclock your phone anyways.

I wouldn't say that, i havent undevolted or Overclockers and i always found Ninphetamine to be great

Thanks guys i appreciate all the advise. The truth is the ninpho-villain mix seems to be working quite well and im pleased with the results so far.althought with Cf-Root was also good but i had a few random reboots mainly when leaving dolphin browser or entering FB.My biggest worry with the heating was damaging my phone with such high temps. because if i need to use it while its charging then the temp can surpass the 50°C mark quite easily.Nice to know its not my phone though.cheers.if anyone is aware of a better kernal id be glad to hear from you as i think this one might be a bit battery hungry too.cheers

[Q] Battery issue

So, over the past few days I've been noticing a few problems with my phone, all of which have to do with the battery. After installing fauxes OC 1.3ghz kernel I noticed a drop in usages before the phone died, that's a given. So i flashed his enhanced 1ghz kernel instead, but still notice bad battery drops when im using it. It doesn't drop 40% over night or anything, only about 6%. But, if i turn the phone off and back on the % jumps up. Sometimes 20%. Is there anything wrong with the battery, or the phone?
Try calibrating the battery.
i haven't doe that since my first phone. How would i go about doing that.

Also, with faux's kernels check your CPU clocking with setCPU, or something similar. Somtimes it will lock at the max clock speed which will contribute to quick battery drain. I'm on his stock enhanced and getting close to 2 days with moderate use.
How do you get two days of battery?! Thar's intense! I haven't been able to get past the 15 or 16 hours with the stock kernel, neither with faux's stock enhanced! Do you usually drop your cpu speed while it's in your pocket or something? Or do I have a bad battery? Because I've been really concerned about this battery not lasting the monster time it is supposed to last...

I have uv and profiles set up in setCPU. I'm actually a little amazed by how good it's been since re-installing all of my mods (went back to stock recovery due to some issues).
If you're experience battery jumps then install the fix noted in the calibration instructions. Most likely you're battery isn't charging to full capacity, so that coupled with the improperly reported stats make it seem much worse than it is. The process is a bit time consuming, but it did work for me.

Well I have Alien #4 custom rom and it actually has the battery fix so it shows the 1% increase/decrease and I recently did a battery calibration by waiting til it got to 100% with an app that deletes the battery stats as if you would do with recovery mode. I also have CWM recovery and everything doing fine there, my kernel is now Faux's 1.3GHz but limited with SetCPU to 1GHz, and I don't know if it'll get me a better battery life just that kernel. What do you mean by uv? And I have profiles set for when the screen is off and when its charging but nothing else apart from the 1GHz setting. Is it normal that I only have 2 scaling options? Powersave and performace?
Thank you. I will be trying this tomorrow when I have the huge amount of time needed to complete this. And uv means under volt.

Thanks to you! I really appreciate it. I will be waiting for your response and maybe you could tell me if it lasts longer with the 1.3GHz ir the 1GHz. Thanks!!

[Q] Overheating

So, for the last couple of days my phone has been getting real hot when charging. It's not the battery that's getting hot it's more towards the top of the phone. The phone is less than a month old and I've never dropped it. I'm assuming it's the processor. I thought it might have been a ROM issue so I just switched from Fresh EVO to mikrunny and still the same issue. It also got hot and drained the battery while listening to music last night. Anyone else experience this or have any suggestions. I now have to charge my battery with the phone off.
Are you using a stock battery or a knock off extended one on ebay? Also have you overclocked your phone at all? Some kernels will allow you to overclock. You on the stock kernel?
You can spank your phone pushing it too much and the sucker will heat up.
I'm using a stock battery. At first I was on Fresh EVO with the stock kernel and now I'm on mikrunny with one of the anthrax kernels, but I don't think it's an overclock issue because it really doesn't get hot during normal use mainly when charging. If I charge the phone with it turned off everything is fine.
What's you clock min and max speeds when your charging??? Also are you using a stock charger??? If so try a different charger.

I haven't changed the clock speeds from what the standard speeds are for the kernel I'm running. I already tried two different chargers and still the same result.

Some of the AnthraX kernels have a problem with overheating. The old v5 ones had it, while the v3 ones did not.
Might want to try another kernel (i heard the unity one doesn't have the problem, and dont think the LeeDroid one does either, dont know if they're compatiable with your rom though)
Agreed. I've had issues in the past with the AnthraX kernels heating up my device. As stated, I'd try and flash a new kernel. Also, what is your CPU scaling set to? I know that IntelliAnthrax (or whatever it's called) was causing major battery drain problems because it would often decide to get stuck at as high of a clock it could. I combatted the similar issues I had by using conservative scaling and a screen-off CPU profile with the max clock set at around 700Mhz. You might even want to try creating a low-clock profile for charging.
If all else fails, at least from what I've been hearing, it could be crappy QC on HTC's end. Sounds like there have been a lot of hardware failures for the Evo 3D.
I don't think it's a kernel issue because I was having the same issue on the stock kernel.

What's the best app to control clock speed? I have setcpu, but haven't used it on the 3d yet.

Ur not alone on this. I have the same issue from time to time. I know it's not the kernel nor my rom cause I had the issue before I even unlocked and rooted my phone. It doesn't happen all the time either. I can go a awhile and no problem and then I get it where it's doing it non stop. Temps like 107 and higher. I've set my clock speed low as hell for changing and screen off. I use the rls 09 kernel that's in the rom I run. I'm not really over clocked either. I have stock battery also and have know idea what causes it.
I'm gonna try underclocking it while charging and see how that works.

I know over clocking can cause heat even a lil bit the phones don't have fans built in to take on the heat from overclocking. Sometimes the phones can get warm if you have big hands and have a good grip on it.
Folks with no overclocking exp shouldn't mess with it.
Tho overclockin the phones I have always thought wasn't a good idea due to heat issues and burnin em up.
On a pc its fine to mess with overclockin due to the cooling effect of the fans or whatever your using to keep the stuff cold.
I set up an underclocking profile for screen off and charging and the hottest I seen it get when charging was 94. I'm ok with that. Also a guy at work has a stock phone and he says his gets hot when charging also.

Undervolting - worth it?

Is it actually worth the effort to undervolt the sgs2? I've already Underclocked to 800mhz and was just wondering if Undervolting saved a visible amount of battery? Cheers.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA App
Ive read some very involved and lengthy debates in other threads about this. Mind numbing some of it.
I believe UV and UC do save some battery but......
From my experience ive found I get more real world battery savings by freezing unwanted apps and processes, set syncs to be more realistic, and using WiFi, Bluetooth, GPS only when I need them. Also experiment with modems.
I try to get the screen on and awake lines in battery usage to mirror as much as possible. Of course because of syncs, calls, etc there is always a small amount of awake more than screen on.
On LP2 at the moment im getting around 4 to 5 minutes difference over a day reported by bbs and im not choking my device at all.
No UV or UC at all.
Happy with that.

It really depends on how much you undervolt the phone... As seen using the phenomenal kernel (speedmod with undervolting), that it does infact provide better battery life when compared to the standard speedmod kernel...

there might be slight increade in your battery life.. but if you dont undervolt it correctly your device may freeze at times with random reboots!
it has happened to me..

Honestly to me, there isn't much difference when I use SetCPU/VC to undervolt kernels like Siyah and void. Better ways to save battery should be to reduce screen brightness, reduce syncing intervals of apps and turning off GPS/BT/Wifi when not in use.
You should however try Phenomenal. It's undervolting does save some bit of battery as compared to stock Speedmod according to many users. I myself also felt better battery life but I have a feeling it's just a particularly good battery cycle (happens occasionally on every kernel) and it will return to normal, gotta test it for a few more days!

Terrible, terrible battery life. (CM7/Faux123 Kernel).

So I took the plunge and unlocked my bootloader, and flashed the latest weekly of CM7. I love it so far, very responsive and quick.
I decided to flash the latest Faux123 kernel (CM7 Unified). After getting great quadrant scores, I was happy. I have a custom kernel on my Transformer TF-101 as well.
Here's my issue:
I get about 3 hours of battery life.
I clocked the kernel to max at 1.2ghz, and I even scaled the governor to powersave. (Using Rom Toolbox, min/max in SetCPU).
I have not undervolted anything at all.
My phone idle seems to shoot up to 40-50% most of the time, and SetCPU says that my phone spends most of it's time at 1ghz+. My TF would pretty much fall asleep at 216mhz, but that's a different device.
Is there something I'm missing?
This was a clean flash, and I always have plenty of free ram. I don't seem to have any wakelocks longer than 10 mins (alarm manager) either.
Oh, and my battery has been properly calibrated.
The stock kernel gave me great life (30+ hours). I expected a little loss, but not this bad after flashing.
Help!
Try a newer kernel. Governors don't work properly with our tegras. A newer kernel should have that disabled and more power save options.

What kernel do you suggest? Ive been out of the atrix scene for a good bit now lol.
My issues with battery life disappeared after installing jokersax's cm9 beta along with faux's kernel for cm9
Also be sure your battery isnt old and calibrate it(guides on main atrix forum)
Can I use a cm9 kernel on cm7? I don't really want to take the ICS route until it's developed a bit more.
My battery has been properly calibrated, though it still doesn't always hit 100%. I have no idea why either.

I woldnt try that.. About cm9, even though its beta, its pretty usable right now, most stuff works fine, you can always go back id it doesnt work.. I didnt went back bcuz battery is most important for me
Hmm, what about kholk or clemsyn's kernels?

I've stuck with fauxs. I think I'm using version 23. I'm not using the lastest one as it makes one of my apps buggy and I don't like how my CPU jumps around when idle. He is currently working on those bugs, but they are hard to correct. Lots of other people are using it though with good results. I also stay with the 1.0ghz versions. Overclocks are nice but I don't need them and perfer the extra battery life.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA
So after a night's recharge, it seems to be working a little better.
CPU Spy says that it's in deep sleep most of the time.
Turns out I had SetCPU, Rom Toolbox, and CM7's settings regulating the clock speed. I uninstalled SetCPU, turned off Rom Toolbox, and let CM7 take care of it.
Life isn't as great as I expected, but its an improvement. The processor still does "jump around", but I expect that to be fixed at some point.
I considered clemsyn's kernel, but I don't want to risk not having an "elite tegra" and blow up my phone.
I really like the .24 1.3ghz Faux kernel. With SetCpu I change between 1.2OC (using lapdock) and 1.1OC (rest of time).
Battery life is equivalent to stock kernel. (I put it on charge when I go to bed and take it off early in the am). It usually has 50% left after streaming music to and from work/Endomondo using gps to track 45 minute workout, all my widgets (news and weather) and a few phone calls.
Phone stays much cooler.
Quadrant standard vs my wife's Atrix (fully stock) with the kernel at 1.1 is 30% better.
Stock ROM; not CM7 however.
I just looked at a days logs. It says that my phone spends 3+ hours in both 1.2ghz and 800mhz, and about 9 hours in deep sleep.
I haven't used my phone much today (40m of display time), and it already got to 15% between 9am and 6pm.
I can't seem to find what's keeping it up either, no obscene wakelocks.

Phone gets REALLY hot

Hi guys. My phone when doing GPS gets REALLY hot. Sometimes it gets hot enough that I think something messes up on it and it just powers itself off. Not sure if thats a safety measure or whatnot.
Can anyone give me any suggestions on what to do to try to even start resolving this issue? I'm not sure what to do.
Phone:
Kernal - 2.6.32.59-MB860-CM9-faux
CyanogenMod v. PARANOIDANDROID
Build # - IMM761
This is normal with the atrix. The atrix is known for running really hot and can take quite a lot of heat. There have been times where i have put my phone in the freezer so it wouldn't explode in my hand. I have mine underclocked at 750mhz and undervolted at the same time since its really hot here where I live and I don't want the phone to shut down due to high temp.

If I remember correctly, unless edited, the power-profile for GPS on many ported roms are based on crespo and i higher than what is usually used by Photon/Atrix. This can cause the issue you're having...as well as terrible battery life.
Another thing that will cause it is if you have an aftermarket charger plugged in that puts out too much power.

Is the kernel you mention above the 1.45 GHz? I can't remember. If so, keeping it set at 1.2 or 1.3 should help. My Atrix doesn't like the 1.45 setting. It also never gets hot at 1.0, but will at higher settings.
Yes, it will reboot or power off if it gets too hot.
EDIT: Just got a CM9 1.0ghz Kernel. Going to test this out and see how it does.
My phone handles 1.45 with a defender otter box on it. I've been running jokers cm9 with it for a couple days now. Not the greatest battery life I'm sure, but on stock firmware I found if I used GPS while charging my phone, it would get extremely hot and would shutdown. The shutdown occurs to prevent damaging the SoC
