[Q] Overheating - HTC EVO 3D

So, for the last couple of days my phone has been getting real hot when charging. It's not the battery that's getting hot it's more towards the top of the phone. The phone is less than a month old and I've never dropped it. I'm assuming it's the processor. I thought it might have been a ROM issue so I just switched from Fresh EVO to mikrunny and still the same issue. It also got hot and drained the battery while listening to music last night. Anyone else experience this or have any suggestions. I now have to charge my battery with the phone off.

Are you using a stock battery or a knock off extended one on ebay? Also have you overclocked your phone at all? Some kernels will allow you to overclock. You on the stock kernel?
You can spank your phone pushing it too much and the sucker will heat up.

I'm using a stock battery. At first I was on Fresh EVO with the stock kernel and now I'm on mikrunny with one of the anthrax kernels, but I don't think it's an overclock issue because it really doesn't get hot during normal use mainly when charging. If I charge the phone with it turned off everything is fine.

What's you clock min and max speeds when your charging??? Also are you using a stock charger??? If so try a different charger.

I haven't changed the clock speeds from what the standard speeds are for the kernel I'm running. I already tried two different chargers and still the same result.

Some of the AnthraX kernels have a problem with overheating. The old v5 ones had it, while the v3 ones did not.
Might want to try another kernel (i heard the unity one doesn't have the problem, and dont think the LeeDroid one does either, dont know if they're compatiable with your rom though)

Agreed. I've had issues in the past with the AnthraX kernels heating up my device. As stated, I'd try and flash a new kernel. Also, what is your CPU scaling set to? I know that IntelliAnthrax (or whatever it's called) was causing major battery drain problems because it would often decide to get stuck at as high of a clock it could. I combatted the similar issues I had by using conservative scaling and a screen-off CPU profile with the max clock set at around 700Mhz. You might even want to try creating a low-clock profile for charging.
If all else fails, at least from what I've been hearing, it could be crappy QC on HTC's end. Sounds like there have been a lot of hardware failures for the Evo 3D.

I don't think it's a kernel issue because I was having the same issue on the stock kernel.

What's the best app to control clock speed? I have setcpu, but haven't used it on the 3d yet.
Sent from my PG8610000 using xda premium

Ur not alone on this. I have the same issue from time to time. I know it's not the kernel nor my rom cause I had the issue before I even unlocked and rooted my phone. It doesn't happen all the time either. I can go a awhile and no problem and then I get it where it's doing it non stop. Temps like 107 and higher. I've set my clock speed low as hell for changing and screen off. I use the rls 09 kernel that's in the rom I run. I'm not really over clocked either. I have stock battery also and have know idea what causes it.

I'm gonna try underclocking it while charging and see how that works.

I know over clocking can cause heat even a lil bit the phones don't have fans built in to take on the heat from overclocking. Sometimes the phones can get warm if you have big hands and have a good grip on it.
Folks with no overclocking exp shouldn't mess with it.
Tho overclockin the phones I have always thought wasn't a good idea due to heat issues and burnin em up.
On a pc its fine to mess with overclockin due to the cooling effect of the fans or whatever your using to keep the stuff cold.

I set up an underclocking profile for screen off and charging and the hottest I seen it get when charging was 94. I'm ok with that. Also a guy at work has a stock phone and he says his gets hot when charging also.

villain + ninphetamine heating problem

Howzit.Heres a question for anyone who like me has the villainROM 2.4.2 that comes with the ninphetamine 2.0.4 kernal installed running XXKG6.Has anyone else noticed the temp of the phone when charging?.Mine charges at between 44°C and 48°C but when not plugged in runs slightly warmer than usual.Didnt do this with the CF-Root kernal though.Been searchin but cant find any complaints about heating problems so maybe its just my unit.Anyway if anyone else has had this issue id like to know.cheers.
The kernel has the charge limit set a bit higher it will go hotter when charging.
And as far temp when being used, that depends what you are doing with the phone at the time, i dont remeber the phone getting two hot with that combo myself.
Try using better battery stats to see what's using processor time.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using XDA Premium App
ninphetamine kernel has been tweaked for overclocking, and overvolting+undervolting. It also has current increased which is why it is hotter when charging.
Personally, I'd stay away from ninphetamine kernel unless you are looking to overclock your phone anyways.

I wouldn't say that, i havent undevolted or Overclockers and i always found Ninphetamine to be great

Thanks guys i appreciate all the advise. The truth is the ninpho-villain mix seems to be working quite well and im pleased with the results so far.althought with Cf-Root was also good but i had a few random reboots mainly when leaving dolphin browser or entering FB.My biggest worry with the heating was damaging my phone with such high temps. because if i need to use it while its charging then the temp can surpass the 50°C mark quite easily.Nice to know its not my phone though.cheers.if anyone is aware of a better kernal id be glad to hear from you as i think this one might be a bit battery hungry too.cheers

Does everyone's Atrix get really warm?

I was just curious if everyone's Atrix gets warm in the lower part of of the phone?
I've read on a few forums people just chalk it up the the dual core processor, but mine gets warm even if I'm doing something as simple as just reading Fox News. I don't know how that could be taxing the processor that much. I don't have much else running in memory which could be using a ton a resources.
Mine doesn't get hot, just pretty warm. I guess I am just suprised cause it's the only phone I've ever had that gets warm like that.
I tried our display model at work and it gets really warm also, so I guess exchanging my phone for another would probably amount to ending up with a new phone that does the same thing.
I was just wondering if it is common with everyone.
Yes, its a dual core phone so its to be expected.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
Yeah, mines gets warm too. Maybe try downloading SetCPU and limiting the processor's speed if you can't handle the heat
Anyways, its to be expected especially while running games or watching movies.
How hot is too hot? With fauxs newest kernel mine gets up to 70c
OCd at 1.3 on idle is at 51 celcius. I think its acceptable
Sent from my OC'd Motorola™ Atrix®
What are normal temps?
Also is there an app which will let me see the temp which works in the stock firmware?
I dropped back to the .7 kernel. My processor was getting way too hot at even 1.2 when under load. 70C+ is not good for any processor. Back to 1.1 for me.

Sent from my MB860 using XDA App
51C at IDLE?! Mine is at 42C!
What OC you have shouldn't matter, as your phone doesn't run at maximum frequency with maximum voltage unless you are actively using it!
But to answer the OP's question, my phone gets pretty warm too. I just read the temperature after watching a 5 minute HD video, and it was at 67C. If you are using the cellular radio i'd imagine it can get even warmer.
That means the dualcore is doing its job
Using setcpu and CPU stress testing & quadrant benchmarking for almost 2 hours straight one day, mine never exceeded 60C.
I think the 1.3OC(v1.9) kernel is wonderful, I've hit 4.9k scores on quadrant standard. It seems to be more friendly with the combination of setcpu & CM7 also, the later kernels kind of crippled my setcpu profiles and would cause my launcher to FC(I suspect?)
Phone idles at 34C.. probably lower because screen off my max freq is 216mhz(AMAZING BATTERY LIFE) in fact, i usually keep my proc throttled down to about 400mhz and don't crank it up until i need it(again. AMAZING BATTERY LIFE)
honestly... at 400mhz the phone still quite snappy.
51c? unnaceptable.
mine runs at about 30c most of the time.
however i did notice a strange issue that the phone gets alot hotter after you charge it and then unplug the charger, a reboot usually fixes this. i make it a habit of rebooting immediately after unplugging the charger and my phone stays most of the day between 30-33c
this also helps the battery life a lot, i can usually get by the end of the day with 60 to 80 percent left.
If you change your oil every 5k miles and put air in the tires and keep your fluids topped off you should be to.... ummm wrong forum. I though this was the nascar forum.
I voided my warranty and your mum.
Mine average on 58C to max at 62C.. Idles at 41C.. It's warm! I got used to it.
Has anyone considered the longevity of the phone and battery from the unit staying warm all the time?
Mine is pretty much warm the whole time it is in my hand when being used. Outside in the sun taking pictures even more so.
I don't think I have any runaway processes. After I restart the phone, I use a task killer to kill everything it boots up with initially. Everything which is needed, like about 4 things come right back up, so I excluded them. But I don't use to to autokill stuff. It's just when I boot up I noticed there are like 30 things started up for no reason being as I just turned off the phone.
I figured I know which ones need to be up cause they come right back up after being killed. But things like Google+, Maps, Gallery...etc...which I don't think need to be running at bootup I kill.
+1 on going back to 1.1... OC'd at 1.3 was killing battery and heating up like crazy! OC'd to 1.1 have no problem with UV, heat, and get 30+ hours battery life with moderate use.
It's not just the CPU/GPU usage what's heating up the Atrix...
That specific area of the Atrix contains CPU/GPU and also the GSM/3G/Wifi and Bluetooth radio chip, which can get really hot while broadcasting voice/data. Even if the radio is idle, if you are on a bad reception area it will be constantly searching for coverage and switching from 3G/4G to 2G, which creates heat and battery drain.
My .2 cents

Evo 3d overheating. Common issue among us Evo 3dusers?

My Evo 3d has been overheating a lot lately. My phone has setcpu set with profiles and the highest it goes to is 1193 and that's only when charging. Off the charger the highest is 972 Max 384 min. Anyone else have overheating problems with their Evo? From a simple Google search it seems to be an extremely common problem.
Sent from my PG06100 using XDA App
As a experiment, don't use setcpu for a few days and see if you experience the same thing.
Mine hovers around 38 Celsius during high load times like after flashing a new ROM and getting everything in working order.
Other than that, I think it just gets a little warmer than usual, but nothing to worry about like shutting off to prevent damage.

can i ask why the HELL you have your profiles so bass ackwards? lol
just curious why you have it set higher when it's charging... and throttled down when you are actually using it and need it to be performing optimally and at low temperatures...
the phone is plugged in.... and it already gets warmer from simply charging, that's how it works. and you have it spinning all the way up while doing so, and wonder why it is overheating? come on dude.
I'm using an evo 3d gsm and I'm not getting any issues with overheating even when running intense apps like dungeon defenders.I don't think you should be getting any overheating issues with the evo 3d. Perhaps it's something u installed that is causing a wake lock
issue.

Simple battery saving. Also I use it more when it's charging
Sent from my PG86100 using XDA App
Bring it down to about 800 MHz while on the charger, and the same when off the charger.
Simple lesson in physics... If its cooler, its more efficient. Try to keep the battery and processor cool when charging by lowering CPU frequency. It will help.
bastardized rom. it's fast. get some.

Is overheating common?

I've done a few searches on the subject and it seems some people have the overheating issue, but not many (or its not discussed anymore).
I've had the Rezound for about a week now. It was a certified like new warranty replacement for my Thunderbolt. I have the extended battery.
I can't use the phone for more than 10-15 (sometimes more) minutes without it overheating (50° + C / 120° + F). This is normally just phone calls or twitter/internet browsing. If I play any game it's overheating every time and quickly. I'm rooted, unlocked, on just the stock ROM.
I'm curious if this is a common issue or if I possibly was provided a defective device. Would a custom ROM help?
Any insight would be much appreciated!
Sent from my Rezoundizzle
i would get a replacement asap
Lol aight, I take it is not that common. Thanks.
Sent from my Rezoundizzle
She runs warm, but 15 min with the extended battery sounds like a lemon. There have been multiple reports of extreme heat like that where people have traded in and no longer had the problem. Go grab a new one and see if you have better luck.
Is it gb or ics?
Had to return my first unit because its USB and/or charging system fried seemingly; it got to 130+ running heavy gaming and went 140+ overnight once on charger shortly before then.
Return it. My current unit tends to heat fast, but I run it hard too. But it only gets to 110-120 under heavy use, not running higher than 120 easily by any means. It is rather good at staying at that threshold or lower.
Thanks for the responses!

Oh, and GB for the one who asked.

I used setcpu to save battery and reduce heat
But now with cr gb rom its all good
I wonder if it's the battery...
I was at 7% battery. Been on charger 2.5 hours, only at 52%. Extended battery...
Or is my phone just eff'd?
Sent from my Rezoundizzle
i remember when changing and doing something its getting hotter so i duno
I would just get a replacment man. It could just be faulty. The newer versions of the rezound are supposed to be better then the older ones. Mine is a pre release unit, and works fine but I had experienced some overheating when I flashed a sense 4 rom, and many others didn't.

*How did you overcome the Massive OVER HEATING

My rezound is over heats until it shots off sometimes. This over heating isn't normal. over 118 degrees). I don't think there is a fix, might be wrong. but what have yall tried and have you been successful with over coming the heating?
Over 110 is normal for this phone. Mine rarely gets that hot unless streaming stuff on 4g. But I would say 110-115 on heavy 4g use is normal. 122 is max. After that is when it should shut off
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using Tapatalk 2
the 110 degrees might be wrong. My phone isn't on at the moment so i cannot tell u how hot it is. the heat totally killed my battery, and i had to order a new one.im trying to avoid the heat destroy this new battery. what u think?
110?
There are a skillion threads on heat on these boards.
Your phone will not shut down at 110. Your phone will not shut down at 120. If you are in 1x, your phone will heat. If you are playing a HD game, your phone will heat. If you are in a hot car, your phone will heat.
But your phone will NOT shut down at 110. If your phone really did shut down at that temperature, then RMA it.
Never noticed my phone getting hot. How do you measure it?
newest leaked RUU has fixed this problem. ruu and flash a new rom and not a restore and you will see you phone stay under 100.
I'm running identical setups on 2 phones but one of them gets super hot when charging and also hotter when under the same moderate use.
The newest leak may have fixed it for you, but it hasn't for me. I still struggle with heat. Mine got to 120 surfing the net on wifi in airplane mode just yesterday. I think they have bad batches, and until you get a good one, you will have this issue. This is my third Rezound, and it may be going back as well. I really want to love this phone, but am getting a little tired of trading them in. Hopefully the fourth time is the charm.

I sure would like to contribute to this thread but it would be helpful if someone could answer me and tell me how to measure the temperature, please.
Battery monitor app from the Market will track/display the temps.
This phone does run hot, and the ICS builds are hotter than GB was. I can still overheat mine with prolonged heavy surfing, esp on WiFi, but the latest leak is far better than the preceding ones, at least as far as my phone is concerned.
I didn't do anything. My phone has been in my pocket for about an hour, but setCPU says the current temp is 80.7*F. That seems pretty reasonable.
I stick mine in the freezer

lol mine still easily hits like 105..im not complaining because mine never 'overheats' but the RUU, if anything, makes it run warmer for me.
I am totally stock. Hit about 114.6F in a 75F shady room after playing Temple Run for about 20min and then streaming 45min worth of Youtube via 4G. I was also charging it for about 1/2 the streaming time.
It felt really warm; warmer than I ever felt it. That is waaaay harder than I ever use my phone though so it doesn't bother me.
After wireless tethering for an hour on 4G: 115*F
Still, this doesn't seem warm enough to warrant any concern. It does not seem to ever get this warm during regular usage, and even now it doesn't seem warm enough that I should be worried.
dose the heat from the phone contribute to the limited battery life.?if the official update dont fix this im gonna sell it.
I've never gotten over 114 degrees and I rarely ever get to 110.
Knock on wood.
I have hit over 120, but I was also charging and using WiFi tether.

Now that we have custom kernels
I wanted to see how people are managing their overheating issues. I am on my 6th rezound and I use it as my main GPS. I am sooo sick of the flashing red and green bulb telling me I can fry bacon on my phone.
SO here is what i have...
S-off of course, ruu to latest global , then custom hboot 2.27.
Viper, with dsp 1.0.7 custom kernel . All frequencies and are undervolted by 100 mv ( anything more causes stability issues )
I use incredicontrol for max 1.0 ghz with lagfree governor and bfq
guess what, i am still overheating.
Any more manipulations i can do to prevent walking around with a toaster oven ?
Sorry for resurrecting an old thread, but we have too many of those thread already, and i didn't see any after the source was released.
