Do we really need 7 home screens? Launcher devs are proud with their 11
homescreens. But, do we really use these home screens. I use only 3...
How about you?
I use 7 as I am on MIUI.
Sent from my X10 TripNMiUI-Iris using Tapatalk
Only 3
One dedicated to the parameters, the second, weather and time and the last to music widgets
I was down to one. I had four 1-row by 4-column instances of Widgetsoid running and had about 7 or 8 shortcuts to different apps and functions on each instance, for a total of about 30-some shortcuts.
Then the lag set in and I deleted the widgets.. now I'm up to four homescreens.
I'm using two atm
i use 4 or 5
i have 4 or 5 screens:
far left - system monitoring or controlling widgets
center - clock/weather/date widget, google search widget, folders
right - full screen calendar widget
far right - rss, evernote and social networking widgets
far far right - only if i find more widgets i might need...mostly only need 4 though
i use 7, all filled with htc widgets and some shortcuts
widgets:
- notes
- tasks
- calendar
- contacts
- bookmarks
- clock+weather
- clock(2 location)
for me 1 is enough, adding too many widgets on screen will drain my battery.
well i use 4 - one for todos, one for calender, one for some basic shortcuts and one for time and weather
2 - i like a minimalist look and has an easy access to everything that i use often

That's my style too
One with my music player pro widget and one with shortcuts.
4 on my phone and only 1 on my tablet.
I'm only using two; one for my quick access stuff such as camera, music, and quick dialers, and the second for tools (shell, ssh, flashlight) and social stuff.

Only 5 in my case.
I guess as many as The rom I using Willie ley me.

3 with the middle as my primary
7 on my desire s!
5-Middle is home screen which only contains clock
left- (places screen) weather widget, navigation, maps, google earth and star map apps
far left- (system screen) set cpu, mini info, battery monitor
right- (internet stuff) google search, facebook, mail
far right- (media center) music widget, pandora widget, Netflix, drocap2, tunein radio and youtube
3
on my old hero running gingerbread, it forces me to minimize the contents the home app has to display so it does not lag too much
4, but only because I use MIUI. If I were using any other, it would only be 1.

Hi.
Does anybody know of a good calendar widget? I've tried some and most require you to use their calendar application. I personally prefer the calender app that comes stock with the vibrant and would like a widget that pulled info from there but looks more like the stock widget on vanilla android.

Im running "android agenda widget". It does exactly what i need and lets me view multiple calendars. Ita free btw

"Pure Calendar Widget" is one of the few paid apps that I have used the entire time since buying them when I had my G1 until now.
Extremely customizable and will allow you to use pretty much any calendar app.
Thanks guys, I'm downloading both right now.
I highly recommend Pure Calendar Widget as well.. excellent application and worth the $

So I bought pure calander widget, as well as messenger widget, very very nice. Granted theres a ton of options, too much to get into right now but so far so good. Nice way to spend the little bit of funds in my account. and the HTC sense skins are a nice touch.
*accidental doublepost, sorry.
The one that comes with launcher pro plus is pretty good. But if you don't use LP I guess its not too helpful.
using agenda widget
started using pure calendar widget today.
3 questions:
-i see someone mentioned you can make it htc sense like? i dont see how???
-when i rotate screen, the widget goes blank for about 2 minutes...not like a little lag and re-draw with takes seconds. it goes completely white for about 1 or 2 minutes, then it all comes back. any ideas?
edit, 1 more question:
-what is the difference between pure calendar widget and agenda widget? pros or cons of each?

You have the option to skin the app. At the bottom in the config screen theres the option to Continue and Skin. Thats where I found mine.
Also which launcher are you using? ADW has an option to enable and disable scrollable widgets, which might be the cause of your problem.
I recently discovered Jorte, which has a good amount of widgets and the calendar app itself is excellent and will fully replace the stock one (my preference) - but I'm pretty sure you can have it open the stock one. It can also sync with Google Tasks although it has to be done manually.
cool, thanks.
in LP, it enabled scrollable widgets and that has seem to fix the going blank problem.
but i think im going to try the agenda widget as pure calendar widget just slows my phone WAY down. It just slows everything down. maybe if i turn off scrollable in pure calendar and lp it will work better...
I spent at least one day trying to find some apps that give me some very basic and easy functions and seems they doesnt' exist!!!
Just some examples:
- I want that on my homescreen there is a widget where I can see the latest/newest items in my google reader feeds/account.
I downloaded at least 10 different rss readers apps but NO-ONE has a widget that displays 2-3-4 or more lines with the newest titles The most near is a widget that show a 3x1 square with ONE line with the newest items switching between them every few seconds. I missed something? there is something like what I ask?
- I want that on my screen there is a widget where I can see what is appening in my facebook account. The FB for android widget shows only one/last post. The HTC FB widget shows too many things and you cannot use if you are using a non-sense rom or if resized it look really bad. The only alternative I found is the FB widget included in the LauncherPro... but what if I dont like LauncherPro?
- I want that on my homescreen there is a widget showing me my exchange/gmail mailbox: just sender: mail_object. Can be done with a very simple widget in the market for gmail, but not for exchange. To do this I had to pay and install a different mail client (Moxier) that has a widget like this...
I'm just wondering I will start to lear java to start developing my own apps

As far as I know, as soon as you disable the sense launcher bar and use a different one such as Launcher Pro Plus you lose all the Sense widgets so the answer would be no you cant.

Right.. this was what I experienced.
I dont want to use Sense widgets because
1) I setted up my dpi resolution to 180 to have a "bigger" homescreen
2) I use launcherpro plus to have 6 rows x 6 colums on every home to insert more widgets
In this way I just power up my phone from standby and I see:
1) hour and day
2) weather
3) news from my choosen keywords
4) calendar with the upcoming events
5) what is happening in facebook
So my question still remains... we have the market full of useful apps that do anything.. but no app to do really easy things like show on an homescreen some datas...this is incredible for me...
I have to do them by myself
I just enclosed a screenshot of my Home Screen.. I know, is not "cool" but it's working for me and give me all the informations I need at a first look without having to scroll in different homescreens
But could be better if there were some better widgets available
You know what pisses me off, there is not even a reliable alarm clock app for android. All of them may let you down in a very critical time. But it is very good thet we can find 1000+ apps that does nothing!!!

what you means for "non reliable" ?
I mean alarm apps work most of the time but somettimes they do not. It causes you to be late for your schedule. I tried many apps. "Alarm Klock" is doing okay but still it fails to ring sometimes.
Also there are so many apps which only does one single simple thing. It is like you have 2 different apps for volume up and volume down. That fancy android market is empty in reallity.
I'm making this thread both to share what I feel are good apps and to discover other apps for myself. I have not installed Dexters 2.2 or rooted yet (though I intend to) so I'm not going to list anything that requires it, but feel free to do so yourself.
So:
Lockscreen: GOTO Lockscreen. I saw this a while back but never actually checked it out. It was featured on DroidLife today so I decided to check it out now and it's great. Great, elegant look to it, great functionality as well. I've been using WidgetLocker for ages and it doesn't compare. There were some issues at first but after rebooting everything seems to work perfectly for the most part(I saw someone mention this as well in the comments so I did it). It's also on sale right now. Might be a bit of a drain on battery.
HomeLauncher: LauncherPro (Plus). I love the look and functionality of this and most of all, the widgets (which are greatly enhanced by Signal's themes -that can be found in Android Themes section). Truth be told, ADW (/ADW EX) probably has more options and functionality at this time (and you can use Colorize Widgets app to replace LP widgets for free). For now ADW might be better, though I'm just waiting for LauncherPro rewrite to happen (going so slowly). GoLauncher as well is fantastic. As is Zeam. There are many great options right now (and so many more on the horizon).
Whatever the case, something that is crucial when using one of these (at least for me) is to select the option to "Keep in memory." I think all of the above have that option (not sure about Zeam). My biggest issue with launchers is that my screen always redraws itself so much (this is a problem with XT720 stock launcher as well), so I have to wait forever for my icons and widgets to load itself, which is really annoying. I've tried things to reduce it, but the only thing that ever got rid of it was to select that option. Now using LP with that option and no lags at all.
I also recommend getting home switcher for easy switching between launchers.
EDIT: SPB Shell 3D
Keyboard:
Stock XT720 keyboard isn't bad (for me). I tend to alternate between that and Swype. I prefer stock keyboard for use in landscape mode. Once I'm rooted I plan to install that app that lets you choose a keyboard for portrait mode (i.e that would be Swype for me) and another in landscape (stock).
EDIT: Stock Gingerbread keyboard
Music Player:
Stock is decent, but nothing special really. I do like the album cover flow in landscape mode though. I alternate between that and Connected music player, which is the ripped music player from the atrix and droid bionic I believe (I'm not sure where to get it since that thread has since been locked). Winamp is also pretty good. PowerAmp has a lot of features, but you get annoying popups after two weeks unless you buy the full version ($5). I'd love to know what others use.
Some apps specifically use stock music player so that's another reason I use stock. i.e. when using GoTo lockscreen, the lockscreen changes when you're playing music to give you music player controls, but only seems to do when using stock music player.
EDIT: Google Music/ PowerAmp
Browser:
Stock is not that great. Has that nice bookmark cover flow in landscape mode, but in terms of functionality there are better ones. I use Dolphin Browser HD now (blue theme). Best UI for browser out there currently imo. A lot of people seem to love Miren and Dolphin Browser mini, for reasons I can't understand (everyone says they are super fast but I never notice any difference on my already fast browser).
EDIT: Opera Mobile
Games:
Really loving Stupid Zombies right now, it's a lot of fun (though has slow loading times). Ninjump is great for quick little fun. Angry birds also remains fun, though repetitive. Would love to see what else runs great on XT720.
Customization/Widgets/:
Beautiful Widgets is great and has a huge range of themed clocks and toggles. The recently introduced "Super Clock" was a great improvement. So much customization with this. Colorize Widget is great if you're using something other than LauncherPro, Signals has themes for it also. Widgetsoid and MySettings, are great for quick access to settings.
Task Switching:
SwipePad is just phenomenal and has a great UI, I recommend you check it out if you don't have it already. Together with long press on home button, I have amazing task switching going on.
File Explorer:
File Explorer is a must for me on my XT720. It's how you can install APKs and browse your sdcard and everything and change things easily. ES File Explorer is great for that and has a nice UI.
There's more that I wanted to add I'm sure, but here's this for now. Feel free to share what apps you use on your XT720.
I really like Zeam mainly for the small footprint & speed, I've used LPP & the widgets are very cool. My preferred keyboard is SwiftKey, once you use it for a while the predictive text feature is really nice. I'm still using the stock browser, that along with ChromeMarks gives me access to all my desktop bookmarks. For music I've got MusicMod (Froyo) for the widgets & the MIUI music app. I'd also recommend SIMI Clock (Time, weather & battery level in 1 1x4 widget & a built in launcher) & SIMI folder widget. I also find SwiFTP very usefull, just fire up the FTP on the phone & copy files between the phone & my pc without a USB cable.
Lockscreen: default--dexter froyo
HomeLauncher: GoLauncherEX---no lags n a lot of options.....nice interface
Keyboard: swype---easy n handy
Music Player:winamp---no equalizer but fast n flexible
i ll recommend mixzing also.
Games:angry birds, world`s hardest game, fruit ninja, ninjump, soccerball, drop, pinball deluxe, brick breaker---all f em addictive
File Explorer:andrpzip, astro
Tools-- android assistant, set cpu---both help a lot in makin ure phone fast n unlaggy
Great post. I loved some of the suggestions.
Customization/Widgets/:
I use Sense Analog Clock. It gives me SD Storage, Internal Storage, Internal Memory, Battery Level and Temperature in one place. Edit: it gives me weather, time, lunar phase (even tough I don't use that info) and quick access to my alarms as well.
Music Player:
Because of the media scan bug, I've tested loads of music players. Most of the players based on folder navigation did not impress me. So I chose the simplest one for now: Gtunes. Once the media scan is back to business, I intend to come back to stock or winamp.
BTW, where do I get Connected music player?
Games:
Andoku is a must have for Sudoku lovers.
I'm starting to play Pocket Legends, but I don't see it getting very amusing in the near future...
Memory Trainer is nice if you wanna test yourself.
Misc:
Pulse - for news
Evernote - for note taking and journal
Gtasks - to synchronize my gmail tasks
AppMonster - to save my apps
Looking for:

Absolute system has many excellent tool, boot animation downloader included.
It's a paid app, but totally worth it Sherry, euh i mean Lucy .
I really like the functionality of "BusyMe (Lite)" which automatically set your ringer to vibrate (or: to quiet) during meetings on your Google Calendar and then return to normal afterwards.
No more hassle due to phone calls during meetings ;-))

Taken quite a while for this thread to get any attention.
Some more apps:
Pulse
Speed X 3D
Afroid (XT720 light)
Apparatus
Cover Art Downloader
Androidify
Google+
SPB Time (I love this alarm clock though it's $6 as opposed to $2 when I bought it)

I had this problem too. Really annoying. The home screen would come up and the touch screen did nothing. I was finally able to get a different bootup screen, but I had to work through a couple before I found one that wouldn't have that problem. I'm currently using the one where the apple logo is displayed and then pulled off the screen by our favorite android sporting a red and white stripped suit.
I noticed a couple things while messing around with it:
1- the boot animation sounds never worked for me
2- If I tried copying over larger boot anims, I would run out of space, but the CLI never told me that, so only part would be copied. (I think this has to do with the memhack/cache tweak)
3- When the touch screen went out I would just use ADB to recopy the original bootanim, then restart and then touchscreen would work again. (Save you a recovery).
In the end, I had to put a smaller file size on there but it's better than that eyeball bootanim, that was freaking me out lol.
With Dexter's Froyo installed and Gingerbread theme upgrade
So:
Lockscreen:
See Music Player
HomeLauncher:
LauncherPro (Plus), Launcher7(I simply enjoy it for being slick, and its status bar, but with a black status bar from gingerbread I've no need for it anymore.)
Slidescreen, this is a beautiful launcher that can also be ran as an app overlaying your current launcher.
If you simply want information, details stats, this is the one for you
Slide screen is slick and its advertisement for the free version, is an add to get the paid version.
sidenote--Home Switcher for Froyo
Keyboard:
Better Keyboard 8
Music Player:
Cloud Skipper
Serves as both a very accessible player and has its own lock screen with full access to the player itself upon hitting the unlock key.
Browser:
Opera Mini
xScope
Games:
Fruit Slice (not my slice of pie but some may like it, ran well)
Glow Hockey (Great game, if it supports vs over wifi, then wow)
Hex Defense (Plays like defense Grid)
Ninja Dash
Ninjump
Pew Pew (was interesting, but a little awkward for me)
Return Zero (interesting racer, and not too taxing on the system either)
Speedx 3D
YooNinja
Customization:
Metamorph is what i use for themes at the moment. May change to something else later on.
File Explorer:
OI File manager
I love saving space, and OI looks simple and efficient and runs extremely smooth.
Media Player:
Mobo Player
Management:
1-Click Clear
Appkik
As for games and excess apps, the ones that can't be ran from SD i backup with Appkik for later use to free up memory and space on the phone.
@ OriginalLucy
I used the following two videos for switching the boot animation
Search youtube for:
ANDROID Boot Animation (How-To Change It)
CyanogenMod Boot Animation
Got it running to replace that really bad boot animation from Dexter's Froyo
Great rom but the Boot animation was driving me bonkers.
Hope this helps out.
An easy way to change your boot animations is set up a folder on your SD card named Boot Animations and put the zip in there. Then go into /system/media and copy the original and put it on your SD card in case something ever happens and you can replace it with the original. Take your new boot animation and just replace the one that is in /system/media and reboot.
Obviously make a back up before you do this b/c not all work well.
Also watch your size. While they do look cool, some take up a ton of space.
wondering why no one mentioned some of these:
- "LBE privacy guard" --> control & take away the rights of your apps, e.g. don't allow facebook to access your contacts or send SMS , in my opinion one of the best apps so far. only for rooted devices!
- "history eraser"
- for users in Germany: "Öffi" -> great app for public transport, in germany we call it "öffentliche Nahverkehrsmittel"
- SMS Backup & Restore
- Titanium Backup
- WhatsApp -> like SMS , but works via internet connection and sends messages via internet -> no costs for sms
What is the normal amount of RAM that should be free on the Stock Samsung TouchWiz Galaxy Tab 10.1?
I was using SPB Mobile Shell Experimental Tablet functions, but ran into issues with it not being able to authenticate over WIFI after a reboot. Then it would lock me out until I uninstall/reinstall, clear cache, data, etc... and start all over. It was very fluid, except I could not use Live Wallpaper.
So now I am making a go at it with the stock home (no other home installed.) And notice it is frequently laggy in picture transitions. I have tried live vs static wallpapers, and I still notice lag.
I do use Folder Organizer (free version), and I am curious if it could be the cause. However with no application showing in the task manager, I see 600mb/724mb in the RAM Manager (click on mini apps launch, task manager, ram manager tab.)
Is this normal? Low? I tend to group alot of apps (as you can get more on a screen) via the Folder Organizer, and then I do some accompanying widgets.
On the home/center screen - TouchWiz Clock, Weather, Agenda, AP Mobile, as well as my work folder, favorites folder, and main menu folder.
1 Screen Left - News and Internet Folder - CNN widgets x 2 (world and entertainment), yahoo finance widget
2 Screen Left - Shopping Folder and Games Folder
1 Screen Right - FriendCaster Pro Widget and Social Hub Widget
2 Screen Right - Multimedia Folder, Music Widget, Pandora Widget, and NetW Widgets x 2 - Disc Que and At Home Que
I am using MultiPicture Live Wall Paper and only pulling from the My WallPapers directory. This does a great job of display pictures in full screen, especially the ones ready for 10.1 screens. Most of which come from Wallpaper Wednesday for Galaxy Tabs.
Anyway, I do not feel this is too elaborate, but perhaps it is the FREE folder organizer? The sheer number of apps it has to display. Smallest is 10 apps and biggest is probably 20-30.
If anyone has any feedback, I would appreciate it.
im not sure with stock HC, but with stock Touchwiz it is too much apps running background..some will auto run and some will run when u enable sync.
mine will show some 400+/724 on first touch.
you can see all that bloatwares running background using quick system info
https://market.android.com/details?id=org.uguess.android.sysinfo.pro&feature=search_result
Thank you. That was a good view into things. For some reason it all dropped to 400 used without me seemingly doing anything. Very odd. Maybe the app has automatic feelers for bloated processes or something just went away magically.

Have about 540 / 724 free with no apps running. That seems to be enough to then load four or five apps and have them keep their memory when switching (as opposed to the annoying having to reload web pages following switching to and from browser). Clear memory drops it down to 456.
So far I am using ADWLauncher EX, Aldiko, Astro, Elixir, and Extended Controls. I mainly want my Nook for reading books so does anyone have a suggestion for anything better or that will combine some of those?
Also, is there a disc cleaner or defrag app or is it even needed?
Also looking for a simple calendar app which I have not been able to find the right one. All I want is a simple text showing the date and month like "16 January or January 16th". Nothing else, one line of text and no other graphics. If this was tied to a full blown calender that I could add stuff to is a plus but not really needed. I have tried simi clock, simple calendar widget, and elixir so far.
Well got rid of Elixir and Aldiko (found that Mantano is better for me). Anyone got any ideas for my calendar problem?
what kind of book formats are you using?
i usually end up using the kindle app for pdf...just put the pdf into your kindle folder and restart app
kingsoft office (which was free) for editing documents and reading
There are probably other options, but I've been using Fancy Widgets and it has an option to add the date to the clock widget. I personally have an all-in-one widget at the top of the screen with time, date, and weather.
I also use Android Agenda Widget on my phone, and it shows the current date with a summary of upcoming calendar events.

Anyone know how to get only 1 "page" instead of the 5 I can scroll through now?
Just put in CM7 and using ADW launcher pro of that helps, was able to do this before I put in CM7 but forget how to do it.
