best ram for battery life - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Please tell me which ram. kernel and
modem is the
best
for battery life

That all depends on how you use your phone.flash different ones and see how they go.type the names of some roms in the search bar and read what people have to say about them.usually takes a bit of time to find the right combination.different firmware versions can mean different rom vresions too.

i tried most of the ROM's
i found folowing
1. Cognition ROM (included kernel)- looking stock but feeling 3 times better - clean and clear - the best so far for battery usage
2. Lightening (included kernel) - stock basic but personalized - not as sharp as cogni but friendly interface with personal touch - ok for battery - better then stock for sure.
3. MIUI - (included kernel) - total outfit! amazing interface and diferent feeling - it has still very small bugs but u can live with them. nice for battery 2
4. caynogen mod(included kernel) - total android stock feeling - no samsung bloatware included - very friendly interface
and u have many options here - many combinations...
this is only my personal view

Oxygen is quite good on battery use too.
Any ROM that is a cut-down / vanilla version will be better on battery life too usually - e.g. - ROM's with HTC Sense will suck more battery due to all the added visual features.

I use tozch x 3.2 with sp1 and its for me the best for now
It also look like stock with a bit customization.

[Q] Android Performance Questions

Well I recently bought a Samsung Galaxy S II and did my first step into flashing ROMs... really fast I got addicted to it.. so I decided to root/flash my old HTC Desire (which is known to me as a battery killer).
I've installed CyanogenMod7 w/ a2sd... I want it to be perfect so I come a few questions...
How much does RAM matter to gingerbread performance / battery drain?
I see many ppl using task killers... are those apps recommended? I think I read about that killing tasks won't boost anything on linux.
Which apps would you recommend to increase performance / battery duration?
i.e. taskkiller, sdmaid(i know it wont boost the system but i think its still useful )...
Are there any more tweaks that could be done?
I believe that a dark background would save the drain from the display, correct me if I'm wrong
share your expirience/tips/tweaks/apps!
I can help you with your first question: if you use gingerbread you don't have to use any task killer, it's memory management is good enough to use it without it.

Not necessarily. It depends on the device and rom it's using. Many gingerbread roms still leaving running tasks and apps in the background (even when you exit the apps properly).

There are tweaks (some dangerous if not done correctly) like scripts which can help ram optimization, speed, etc. You'll just have to choose the one's you prefer or trust to use. You could try this out: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1245310 .

Ideas for kernels and ROMs

Separating posts from the other threads. I want them in here.
Post what you want in a kernel and what you want in a ROM, what kind of ROM, etc.
Let's keep this clean so Devs can see what we want and see if they can do it!
For the kernel Devs: We have part of the kernel source BUT not all of it. We do not have the WiFi driver source as HTC will not release it. This is the complicated part as far as I know of. I bet you guys are one hell of a dev and can do it.
For everyone else: Post what you want like this so it is nice and easy.
Example:
ROM:
- Power Menu
- Debloated
- Sense 4.0 Theme
- etc
- etc
Kernel:
- Overclockable
- For ICS
- Undervolted
- etc
- etc
That makes it easier to read and not look smashed up.
Let's try and make this easy and pleasant for those who wish to help us!
Ok, so...
A perfect Rom for me:
- Fully working sense 4
- Full beats audio and dsp manager
- Advanced power menu
Oh and something like leedroid tweaks

perfect for me: lets get CM9 fully functional! wifi, camera, bluetooth, nfc, and GSM are not working as of yet, right? couldn't the first step be there and then work our way up to the Sense ROMs?
ROM:
- Advanced Power Menu
- Notification bar toggles (like CM7 or MIUI)
- Unified Apps (i.e. Sense, AOSP, MIUI)
- Tweaks app
- Accurate battery icon
- Multiple lockscreens
- Stock or themed option
- Tweaked and optimized thoroughly
- Bloat removed
- Carrier IQ absent
- Lockscreen supports music controls for google music/pandora
- Sweet custom boot animation =P
Kernel:
- Optimized governors
- Optional capacitive light notification
- Optional backlight notification
- Optimized for battery life and performance
- GPU optimization for performance

The problem with some requests(like above for a rom) is that they list features included in cm9 or aokp, and a dev isn't going to spend countless hours doing that if it will be automatically replaced once cm9 is working(and it WILL be working).. so I suggest that people ask for features that are NOT specific to cm9/aokp/miui - because when any of those are successfully ported then those requests are fulfilled.
As far as kernel tweaks go, how about any/all of the tweaks that were implemented in faux's latest kernel? Seems like a pretty complete list of awesomeness there.. I doubt anyone here is going to suggest something that isn't already on that list, so a kernel dev just has to decide what is possible. And they will know best what they are capable of.

I agree with both of your suggestions. One thing, though. Whether we can have a fully working cm9 or not kind of depends on whether we can have a fully compatible kernel, I think. Even for custom roms to be more flexible and powerful (i.e. not just de-bloated, tweaked, or themed), we need more powers and features borrowed from Linux, or at least, a kernel that would allow devs to work on.
So the top priority for us now is to get all the kernel source codes for ICS from HTC. Without it, we can't go too far. Or am I missing something? Let's all sign the petition (it's somewhere in this forum).

I couldn't agree more - but I'm pretty sure we are going to have the source soon enough.. keep checking http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads for it. I mean I remember seeing sensation get their source after they got their ICS.. the official update just came out, perhaps they want to make sure there are no major issues before they release the source?
But still, YES.. we need kernel work more than anything else I think. It won't magically make everything else easy, but it will make it less impossible
EDIT: So I thought I would share this cool website.. check this out https://www.changedetection.com/log/htcdev/downloads2_log.html?emsg=1001(this page shows what changes were made to the htcdev address above) you can set it up so that it will e-mail you when there are changes to a website, or in my case - when they add the word "amaze" to http://htcdev.com/devcenter/downloads it will e-mail me.. so far there is only 1 other person watching that page for an update.. so I should be the first to know when our kernel source gets posted!
Very useful website, thought I would share! You could have it email you when a dev edits the OP of a rom they released, or if there is a website that gives special deals(have it look for a specific word on that page), or if/when max krivonos ever updates his cm9 for the amaze post on google+(he hasn't since I started checking)..
but theres already a kernel source code on that website for the Amaze. so we're waiting for something more?

We need it for ICS(android version 4.0), and it should be kernel 3.0.16 instead of 2.something - what is on there is for gingerbread, and just having a kernel of 3+ means a lot more features.. source means that could be easily made into something better
and then that would help with getting CM9 fully functional? or at least thats the hope? lol
anybody know if the petition has been sent to HTC? maybe 500 signatures is enough for them to do something?

[ROM][2.3.6][YP-G70][July25] Chip v1.5

Hi all!
This is a compilation of tweaks/themes/mods found around the forums (and elsewhere) cooked together with some of my own modifications and slimmed down into one firmware for the Galaxy Player/Galaxy S WiFi 5.0". Note that much of this is other people's original work. I have linked to sources for a lot of the features in the list. Go thank these developers for their awesome job!
My goals for this firmware are that it should look decent, be slim and fast, and have good battery life. If you have found or developed a tweak or mod that you think will improve this firmware, by all means do suggest it in this thread. However, keep in mind that I cannot work magic, and have used Android for less than a year. Even so, I will try my best to implement feature requests, and to fix all bugs.
This firmware does not include a kernel, so it should support all USA and international devices (and partially the Korean version) as long as you install the correct kernel (by rumirand or Entropy512) for your device. After installing the kernel, reboot into recovery and flash the zip at the top of post 2. I would recommend re-installing the kernel afterwards, just to be safe. Also, when coming from another firmware, you will probably need to "wipe data/factory reset." If you are just upgrading, you should only need to clear cache.

True... but there are people (like me) who have no way to pay for the premium apps even if they wanted to. I guess I'll remove it - if people really want it, it's not too hard to put back. (edit: that is, individually)

As for me using a ROM in english is not such a big problem, but when you have an ability to use your device in native language its much more pleasant now I am configuring Eryigit rom 2.0 a little bit for myself. This ROM supports czech and russian. Yesturday I installed there a mix of John_2k2 and iJimaniac themes. It needs to be fixed, but it works at least. It looks very similar to this ROM''s ICS theme
maybe in nearest future I will try to add there advanced power menu and another toggle bar. If I will make it I can send it to you, so we can have all good features in native languages. but its a question of struggeling with my lazyness
Good idea OP. Could you do me a favour? Could you link me to the STOCK XXKPL download for the international device, I'd like to have a go at customizing. Cheers.
EDIT: Just seen you did, but there's no English version. Damn.

The reason his ROM has support for additional languages is because his is based off of the Chinese stock, while this is based off the European, which is newer. I might be able to add languages by hacking framework-res - I'll see what I can do.

Because each of their keyboards take up about 15mb each, and Hacker's keyboard is much smaller and more customizable, and ICS themed. If you want it to look like Samsung stock, set it to 4 row on portrait and landscape, and GB theme.
Also, it only comes with an English dictionary, but there are more available in the Play Store.

Swype and Mini Diary will be back in the next version, but only because you asked
CRT animation only works if you have "some animations" or "all animations" set in display settings.
What do you mean by status bar toggles customizable? There's a "Quickpanel Settings" app that can enable/disable and re-order the toggles.

Difference between stock rom and custom stock based rom!

Hello Guys,
total noob here so this could be a total noob question.
I was wondering if someone could explain the difference in a stock rom and a custome rom based on stock.
I s there real notable difference in performance?
And what difference does a kernel make to different roms?
I have a rooted s3 but would like to know more before playing with custom roms.
Thanks guys
The main advantage with custom roms is having other features and/or more customizibility options.
Of course there are usually some performance- and battery-tweaks aswell (usually to fix e.g. the Launcher redraw, tweak memory management, ...)
Read the description of the custom Rom's. The most popular ones are Omega and CM9, the latter not being a finished product and having several drawbacks in functionality (such as FM Radio, ...) but other nifty new features.
If you're still not sure if you should flash a custom ROM after reading... don't. However I recommend Omega if you should choose one.
Painless to use, very nice tweaks and -most important- continued and fast development and reaction to problems.
Kernels are more or less independend of the ROM and bring feature tweaks or additional low-level functionality such as the ability to use NTFS-formatted USB-Sticks or SD-Cards, and usually come with tweaks to save some more power in sleep mode while increasing responsiveness in active usage.
I prefer Siyah due to the dev being very active, around a long time and the kernel having lots of nice features.
Difference at present almost zero .

Sure!
Well i did a lot of things but those which concern battery use were:
-After some trying other roms i noticed that .431 had better battery use and a lot of mods so i choose this one to make my perfect rom.
-Removed all bloatware and even some non bloatware system apps that i dont use (taken from several threads like this http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1614761
, I experimented freezing some apps that i thought werent necessary but i didn t want to delete, like clockserivice.apk or even semcalendar.apk
-Installed New xperia JB 4.2 Adreno libs for our little arm cpu.
-Ive tried Greenify but it doesnt seem to work for me.(but my mini pro doesnt need it , its super fast)
-Most recently ive frozen SystemUI service "LoadAverageService" Which seems to take some unecessary RAM Use. (i havent had any problem)
-I've searched for those apps that are light , fast and RAM friendly (Nova launcher, quickpic, whatsapp+ , google keyboard, etc)
(replaced sony camera app with JB camera sony camera had some thumbnail bug)
-I dont use Facebook app everytime i install it my phone slows down.
-Moved most of apps to sd via ext partition ( Link2sd) ive only left in internal those one that i really need to be responsive like the app launcher
Also fixed most problems with .431 rom like the LED and some other things i really cant remember ( ive had this rom for so much time , that level of satisfaction i have)
In things not related to battery:
-Installed Stock AOSP FUll Black SystemUI (I love the JB UI) (modded by me to have a clock) from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1840580.
-JB 4.3 Font
-JB animation
Xperia 4.3 Bootanimation

Thanks I will try it to .587 on my mini. About the link2Sd, does it lessen the memory card life when used.
How did youdisable the LoadAverageService? Titanium backup?

As far as i know yes it does but i personally dont think it will be that much to not use link2sd.
With this app
https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=cn.wq.disableservice&hl=fr
Under system apps > systemui > uncheck loadaverageservice

I tried the disable service app, and disable the loadaverageservice, but with the extent that the disableservices app is having 12mb on the ram. Is it still worthy to use it?
And I also see that google services app has many running services, is there any safe to disable?

This is the thread where i got the trick http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2372363 maybe you can look for more opinions , for me its worth it as it doesnt affect any functionality in my sk17
About disabling google services , do some research (or crazy experiments  ) about what does it do every running service you would like to stop. I still dont have knowledge enough to recommend mingling with that services and i totally wouldnt recommend it.
cheers friend
