Just posting pics of a stand that I've had for a while, called Crabble... It worked reasonably well with my EVO 4G but due to the way the phone's edges are shaped it works even better w/the EVO 3D. Holds it reliably whether in portrait or landscape config, and as you can see it fits right into your wallet.
It's probably not the most durable thing due to the folding section in the middle, but it was only like $10 shipped from the UK to Puerto Rico (the US distributor wanted to charge me way more for S&H). You can Google their site...They sell it with a couple different designs.
Also pictured is a neat 90 degree micro USB cable that I bought to charge my EVO 3D in the car. I doubt these are hard to find in general, but finding a short 1 ft. cable of this sort was pretty annoying, particularly finding it from a store that wouldn't charge an eye to ship to Puerto Rico (ended up using Insight).
Part # is UUSBHAUB1LA if you want the cable to swing down from the port on the EVO 3D, made by Startech. If for some reason you want the opposite angle it's UUSBHAUB1RA.

I figure it's probably more comfortable for having it on the desk that way (so the cable isn't on the way). Insight still seemed like the cheapest place, they're charging an eye for then on Ebay. Insight has them in 3" and 6" but only one of the two angles is available at 6" (left I think).

Oh wow, I could've sworn I posted a pic like that, hence why I said "Also pictured" when taking about the cables... Guess I took the picture but forgot to upload it, gimme a few minutes and I'll put it up. There's enough clearance with this stand for the phone to rest in it with the cable plugged in and the connector's edge doesn't even though the bottom surface, so they work together very nicely.

I like the first one better because it's super light and super adjustable. But you really have to tighten the thumb nuts if you don't want it to slowly collapse.
The second one claims to be made of aluminum, but its as heavy as brass or steel and it's a noticeable addition to a shoulder or backpack.
I am using one of these i got at burlington for like $6. use for the kitchen. Only issue is the angle could be back alittle bit more.
I think I will go and play around with some card tonight/over the weekend and see if I can come up with an Origami/pepakura-style stand (dual-angle of course) which I can make from thin Plastic-card. I have access to a greeting card creaser and would really like a light and portable stand that gives the ability to plug in the charge cable. If I get anything worth taking a snap of I will stick it up, with plans of course.

This is a magnificent stand that I bought two of. It folds away to an easily storable size and has plenty enough flexibility and stability to be used in multiple orientations. The only negative is that the charging plug won't fit if you orient the tablet right-side-up though this is easily solvable if you invert the tablet.

It's still poor design. The kickstand is strong enough, but if you have a coiled charging cable, it will still pull it over as those cords sort of retract on their own. It will pull it down.
The real problem is my car charger. Not an issue since my Otterbox Defender made it too wide for the cradle (which my wife loves, because now she gets exclusive access to it), but the charger port being on the left means if I'm charging in the car, the charging cable has to reach not only up from the cigarette lighter to the console, but around to the left. Charger on the left would only make sense in an English car, where the driver is on the right and would mount the phone on the right side of the console. I can do reverse portrait in CM9 (and possibly other ROMs) to get it on the right, but then it's on the lower right... right where the cradle grabs the phone, so that's a no go.
Speaking of the Otterbox Defender, neat feature on the belt clip, if you pull the actual clip out all the way, it locks in place, so the belt clip has a stand. Portrait mode works best, and it looks great. I can set it by my computer, and if something happens, I see it right away.
Actually the cable makes sense for those that do not use a cradle but still want the phone plugged in...in America anyway.

I just received that dock yesterday. First impressions are very good. One small exception.
I use the Platinum case that I got at Best Buy, which is essentially the same as the Seidio case.
The phone docks fine, but the case causes the phone to "tilt" a bit to the left. Even with the sleeve out of the dock, it still tilts a bit and does not seat all the way.
But it is barely noticeable and the dock works great.
If you get this dock, be advised that it does not come with a microUSB cable for connecting the dock to your 12v supply in your vehicle. But if your former phone was an EVO 4G like me, you probably have many of those cables laying around any way.
If you do not use a case, however, with the sleeve in the phone fits like a glove.
If you have seen or used the Seidio dock for the OG, like I did, the first thing I can say about this new dock is even though the EVO LTE is larger than the OG, the dock is less intrusive on the windshield.
Thanks, but i mainly just need something to hold my phone. I don't use the NAV on my phone anymore, so i just need something so my phone isn't sitting in my cupholder.

I just got my Diztronic case which is absolutely the perfect case and it will not fit in the dock. Not quite sure what to do... I'm leaning towards returning the dock.

It does tilt a bit, but that's what those two tiny foam pads that came with it are for. I put one on the right bottom side and the other on the middle nearer to the backside of the phone. It's almost perfectly balanced now.

I have the same case and it fits fine in the car dock. Did you remove the extra insert? There's an insert (adapter) that is in there for a naked LTE. It just pops right out and your Diztronic covered LTE will fit right in there. Make sure to use the two foam pieces on the right hand side so your phone doesn't tilt.

This is what I used with my Photon and it works perfectly with the evo lte. Just turn it sideways and turn on car mode. It holds TIGHT to the windshield and wont come off.. even in Texas heat. For extra fun take a nfc tag and have it auto launch car dock when near
One thing i really found super convenient was the magnetic QI charger i had in both my car and my boat with the nexus 5.
just slap that phone on there, and it would stay put and charge at the same time..
have anybody found a way to get similar QI charging and mount for the G3? after the nexus 5 I cant live without wireless charging.
I have some neodynem magnets laying around, but i dont think the G3 would be secure enough like the nexus 5 was, maybe it would be possible to modify the rear cover with some metal plates or similar?..

Unfortunately, they are all non-magnetic.
This one has magnetic options for the devices that do not have a smooth back. I expect it to influence a market full of cheaper copies soon.

I wish the mount's usb input were at the base, or at least on the back of the holder. That would make the cable stand out less. I feel like it should be in the base for that kind of money.
Edit: This one is slightly cheaper and has a lot more features. It hasn't been released yet but might be by the time people in the US get their phones.
Edit 2: Never mind, it doesn't look like that one is going to launch. Idk why some things like the NFC feature haven't been used by another company - it can't be that difficult or expensive.

Its a pity it failed to meet it's kickstarter goal. he was looking for $150k though, sounds a lot for a kickstarter of that scale.
Meanwhile, I ordered one of these. I use a non QI version now and I like it, it's discrete, and doesn't really look like a mount with nothing attached. Looks like a lot of manufacturers are going for these 'microsuction' materials. Less problems than magnets.
I have no problem using this one with my Nexus 5 for a long time.

I think part of his failure may have been too many initial features with too high a cost. The LEDs with a sensor could have been dropped. I can even see that going wrong in a car where if you don't bother to put your phone there, reaching over to the radio or the person beside you would make it light up. Also color choices must raise the cost some but just black for the start up would have been fine.
What's wrong with magnets? I always figured the suction ones might have trouble if cold, etc. I've got the InfiniApps mount and it works well, just doesn't have wireless charging. But my Note 2 is flat on the back, and the back cover is removable unlike a lot of phones these days. Not sure if the metal ones even are a metal that magnets attract.

I prototyped one for my old Note 3, and to get enough magnetic force to hold it in place, the compass/magnometer were useless and it completely screwed up useage of the sPen.
I fitted 4 12mm dia x 0.3mm thick disc magnets in the back cover to correlate with 4 countersunk magnets fixed around the perimeter of the round QI charger. this allowed me to mount it vertically and horizontally. it worked great apart from the above exceptions, and was completely hidden on the phone.
The microsuction one I have has more trouble when warm than cold, and only then when it has gained a bit of pocket fluff. Works great if you clean it regularly.

You had to put magnets in the phone? I only had to put in the thin piece of metal that InfiniApps provided for mine. I can mount it both portrait and landscape and it sticks right away. Do you have a cover on yours? Maybe it's just the type of backing it had.
The G3 may have problems with the magnet types due to it's curved back though.

No cover or case. I didn't want any visible external signs so the magnets were fixed inside the original battery cover. a metal plate didn't work as there is not enough force to overcome the distance without increasing the size of the magnets around the charger. Having a magnet to magnet contact always feels better when it locates.
the back of the G3 is less curved than it looks: the middle third is almost flat. The QI coil appears to take up most of it though.
If the manufacturers could standardise(Yeah, I know) and put a ferromagnetic rail down either side of a device, it would be easy. The two rails could even be used as power rails, doing away with the need for wireless power transfer completely.
Was thinking about a metal plate inside the battery cover. But really thin magnets might be better. Would love to see someone give this a go.

As mentioned by posters below, that's an expensive charger - about $60 all in - compared to a similar AirDock for $70-80 with no effort required. The expensive items (KoolPad and long mounting system) I had before starting the project, so were sunk cost. To build a similar version, you could likely order the entire kit from Dx.com for under $30 as follows:

The only question is whether the Qi case has the same clearance inside the shell. That I can't say, though if the aesthetics weren't a huge deal, you could epoxy the magnets to the exterior of the shell.
Step 1: disassemble the charger
The charger comes apart with four screws in the pack, hidden under the non-skid pads. I popped them out with the tip of a razor blade and unscrewed... Then a spooger (or other thin, stiff tool like a guitar pick or an old credit/debit card) can be slid around the outside to release the catches.
Step 2: Install the magnets
Next comes the magnets in the charger cover. I didn't know how much space I'd have, so I got 1/32" thick magnets. I stacked 3 together in four locations, but if I were to do it again I would know that I could have used four 1/16" thick magnets, and they could be a bit larger (3/4" dia vs the 1/2" I used).
to omit the long story about how I got here, just imagine an hour of trial and error (go eat some of those pringles and get another drink)
To get them in the right place without using glue, I copied the area that corresponds to where the battery is in the G3 back to the inside of the Qi charger case in pencil, then laid a length of 2" packing tape (sticky side UP) in the case and traced the corners with a blue marker. The ruler you see is to hold the edge of the tape and keep it from folding up...you'll want one on each side when you get to the next step!
Now put the magnets in the corners of the "box" you traced onto the tape (see the two rulers...yeah, that's the second piece of tape). Maneuvering the tape by the rulers, place the magnets into the cover of the charger (sticky side down now) so that the tape encapsulates the magnets. There are lots of exposed contacts - no sense in shorting everything out on the magnets, as it will be a tight fit.
As you flip the case over to close it, be careful to make sure the LED charging light pipe is still in its slot. Also, hold on tight...the charger coil is slightly magnetic, so adding the magnets will snap this baby shut!
Step 3: Assemble the charger and apply the sticky stuff
Okay, after you put those screws back in it's time to make the front of the charger sticky. The charger will lift/hold the phone, but the phone back is too slick against the charger and it will slide right off. Note: other chargers normally put the magnets on the outside and then spray them with a rubberized coating. Just for kicks, I did it differently; I may ultimately add a rubber coating to the charger, it depends on how this holds up.
So, you've got that non-skid stuff. Put it onto a glass surface and use a ruler to cut out two 1/2" tall x 3" wide pieces. If you use more than that it will be difficult to extract the phone. Place the strips top and bottom. Note that by doing this, you're letting the case back and charger case deflect between the sticky pieces, getting a little closer. The force is strong enough to hold the phone to the sticky mat and compress it lightly, ensuring it stays in place, even upside down.
Step 4: Modify the phone back
Next comes the phone side of the equation. There are several ways to get a Qi enabled back plate; I got mine off eBay - ugly Verizon logo and all. Anyway, there is about 0.030" (0.9mm) of clearance between the battery and the back. That's a good place to put a piece of steel, too, since it won't be covering any of the multiple antennas which surround the perimeter of the phone back.
It turns out that a Pringles can bottom is both the correct size, made of magnetic steel, and a good thickness at about 0.3mm. Note that if you can find a 0.5-0.6mm (0.020") thick piece of sheet stock, it will increase the holding power by 50% or so. Above that doesn't help any. You're done with the Pringles by now, right? Okay, then just cut the pringles can bottom with scissors, and be careful of those sharp edges! Tape it into the back, right over where the battery would be.
Note: most sheet metal will have a slight bow - use this to your advantage and flip the steel so that the natural curve matches the curve of the phone back. The closer you can get the steel to the magnets the better.
Step 5: Test it out (aka, there is no step 5)
Home stretch. Put the phone back together and double check your mounting matches and the alarm in the charger indicates you have power. In my installation, the charger will be upside-down, so the LED will be covered. I decided to keep the alarm so I know that the phone is positioned properly, but if you're not as concerned you can neuter the alarm when you have the charger open (see the Amazon reviews for a how to).

Wouldn't it cost the same for one that already does the same thing? You probably just have to add metal to the battery cover but that's about it.

The AirDock, when they eventually ship, is $69 (+$10 in my case for the long mount). I'm in for about $60 at this point, so not much savings, but I probably should have clarified (and will in a moment) - the item list was mostly what I had and wasn't purchased specifically for this project. The car mount was way more pricey than what I'd normally get, but the raked windshield in my van makes normal mounts nearly impossible. a Similar mount for my truck was ~$10. The KoolPad was purchased prior to wanting to make the magnetic charger; I just wanted one I knew would work well and could transfer a lot of juice.
One-stop shopping at Deal Extreme (dx.com) would cut the cost quite a bit, the only question is whether the Qi case has the same clearance inside the shell:

I spent about $60; as I've added to the OP it could be done for less (<$30) with careful component selection from a single Hong Kong vendor. The iOttie is $80 and wouldn't work well in my van (raked windsheild. no "dash" to speak of for mounting).

I will try to make a similar charger but with the DX parts instead - I did choose a different charger than the one linked to though as I read that the X5 doesn't work very well. I will keep you posted on the parts when they get here.
I found a China QI charger in a closet (got too many gadgets in there) and after inserting the Pringles bottom in the phone the charger actually charges alot better for some reason..? Anyway - I left the G3 on the charger pad with navigation running. The charger could almost keep the phone charge at status quo BUT the phone temp went up to 46C after maybe an hour or so. I hope the DX charger works better or at least cooler
I've been working more on this little project I've put 4x 3 10mm magnets inside the charger and I noticed that the actual coil could be lifted closer to the lid of the charger - actually by several mm. After this the lid had to be pressed hard together to close and it arcs a tiny bit in the middle but that only brings the coil even closer to the charging pad inside the cover when the bits of sticky pad is lifting the phone a bit.
The result is now that the phone charges between 18-30% / hour at a temp of 35C. I can keep it charged when using navigation (and even very slowly charge it) at a temp of 40C. This is at a temperature in the room I'm testing in at about 25C. So when using AC in the car it will be lower.
The learning point for me has been that a quite bad QI charger can be caused by wrong placement of the coil inside in charger. After lifting (and centering) mine it's actually quite good. Keep in mind that before modding this actual charger I was close to throwing it out as it seriously almost couldn't charge and it was VERY picky about placement of the phone. So after using maybe a minut finding the right placement it almost couldn't charge neither my old SGS3 nor my LG G3 and it often stopped charging because the coils was too far away from the phones charging pad. This was when placing the phone directly on the charger with no sticky pad lifting it slightly from the charger.
Now after modding it and WITH sticky pad it charges consistently and at an acceptable rate
If anybody is curious I can take the charger apart and take a picture. I build mine from the same design as the OP (which I'm really grateful for, this is more or less the charger I've been dreaming of), I put in the magnets a bit differently, personally I think my way is easier but it's not a huge difference.
Ohh.. and I still got parts coming from DX, I also found a 1.5A output QI charger that I would like to make a build on to see if it's even better for navigation If anybody is interested I will keep posting in this thread with my experiments..
So you used a grid of 12 magnets? What thickness are they?
Or did you mean you used four 3mmx10mm and that's how you got the space to lift the coil - by placing them outside the coil area ?
That's interesting about lifting the charger coil. Mine isn't too picky about the placement, but I'm a little glad that I don't have more magnets as it's just enough to hold my G3 on but not so much that it pulls out of my hand before it's in the correct spot for charging.
I'll let admit I haven't checked the charging rate, but it seems to hold its current battery level while using GPS.
Oh I'm sorry - I use 4 "towers" which each is made of 3x 10mm diameter, 2mm thick neodymium magnets. They are placed around the coil in the corners marking the coil area in the charger (if that makes sense..?). I guess a picture would be helpful here so I will take the charger apart later today and take one.
