My wife's Aria is still blocked her from installing 3rd party apps. The phone has never been rooted and 2.2 was upgraded back in March. I've called ATT twice and they play dumb about the subject and insist that the only update for this phone was the 2.2 firmware. Any tips on getting the Unknown Source box installed?

Sure, it allowed non market Apps, but it hosed the ability to send and receive mms messages. Not a recommended fix if you ask me.

I would call again. Ask to speak to a "real" tech. There are more experienced technicians who can help you once you get through the initial screening made by the customer service representatives. I remember reading on another thread that someone called and they immediately pushed the update out to the phone.
Good luck!

You could simply record your mms settings first, then do the process and re-input them when you're done.

Everyone's preferences are different. I, for one found the quirks in sense irritating and jettisoned it long ago for CM6, then CM7. But that is my preference, YMMV.

According to http://www.droid-life.com/2010/07/1...feed&utm_campaign=Feed:+DroidLife+(droid+life) there will be an update to Eris phones. One thing I wonder about is they are calling this mandatory.
What happens if you don't install this? I know Verizon tracks who installs patches and I don't want to take chances losing root.
yeah I'm running EvilEris3.0 on my wife's Eris. I'm actually wanting to go back to the stock 2.1 cause shes not happy with how her phone is acting.....wondering if this will put it back to stock or HOW do I flash it back to the stock ROM?
any help with this would be thankful.
Ok lets not, panic. You need to read the entire thing, and point out that if you have MR3 then MR4 is mandatory but if you only have MR2 then it is only recommended meaning if your current rom has OTA working and you have MR 2 you will be able to ignore the update. If you have MR3 (MR being maintenance release) the update will be eventually be installed for you if you don't do it voluntarily. and you cannot get a replacement for any problems that this is suppose to address if you do not install it
Hey this shouldn't be a big deal. This same update was sent out sometime at the end of last month and those who were rooted were able to root back instantly. Even the 1.49 people. (Assuming you have luck with ADB recovery)
So it will just temporarily remove root?

Pretty much from what I've seen.
And all we have to do is reflash recovery like we did the first time? That's not so hard.

Put her on Ivan's Eris_Official.
No strange/unpredictable behavior. Ever.
I'll just wait for someone to run diffs on it vs the leak4rombase version and see what we can get from it.
Okay with this new root method and all I'm curious as to know if this MR4 is going to stop us from rooting this method. The old method wasn't stopped, but obviously not everyone can do that method.

I haven't ventured into the realm of custom ROMs yet. Definitely an area that I want to get into (I was an avid blackberry beta tester before I jumped ship).
Can you answer a few questions perhaps?
1. Will flashing a new ROM cause me to lose all my user data?
2. What ROM do you recommend? I actually like the look of the stock .91 ROM, and I use ADW Launcher. I'm not really into the CG7 look with everything being bluish. I guess with ROMs, I just don't have a good enough understanding.
For the first question, yes you will lose stock data. But if you have gmail, contacts, paid apps, and calendar will be saved. But its totally worth it. The rom I recommend right now is the ALIEN ROM. Which is a nice one. If you want to to start, let me know and I will give you a guide that helped me.

Double-tap home got too annoying for me.
I ended up freezing the default voice command feature in TiBu, and don't have to worry about it anymore...

Here is the alien ROM LINK
Sorry for the late response.
Ok! Well, all that was easier than I thought. This is amazingly fast. So far I haven't found any glitches, everything works the same for me. I've rebooted several times and the home button hasn't reset, so thats a good sign.
One thing I did notice is that I now only have one APN listed, and I think before I had several.
I didn't install the bloatware, but BLUR seems to work fine.
One thing I will say is that installing 200 apps by hand from the market SUCKED. I used a Titanium Backup and then used the market link from there.
Also thought that I should mention that this did *NOT* fix my "double tap" home button issue.
After some amount of time the home button defaults to voice commands, which is useless to me. Taking another suggestion above and freezing the app with TiBackupPro.
Oh well. Maybe Beta #4 will fix the issue.

I have a small echo-like noise now that I hear during phone calls on my phone. I think it is a hardware issue because I don't hear it on my bluetooth headset. I called Verizon 800 number the other night because I was wondering about the 4G outage and mentioned my audio problem while I was on the phone with her. She said if I call back from another phone, tech support would connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem, and if its unfixable they would send me another Thunderbolt.
I am wondering if I need to unroot before I do this....would tech support be able to tell if my phone was rooted and thus void the warranty and not be able to do anything for me? What should I do?
Bare minimum I'd install the stock rom on there, I don't believe they would dig far enough to see if fastboot is unlocked.
As for the title question Yes, they can tell if rooted.
I don't think they can tell Cuz I called yesterday Cuz my screen is messing up they called me back on another line and wanted me to do a factory reset but didn't know that I was already on GB

The only thing I can think of, and I'm no expert or anything so this is just a guess, is that they could look at the software version of the phone, and if it isn't the latest, or a previous release for this phone, then they could speculate that you are rooted, though I don't think that alone would hold up in court if it ever came to that.
When the support rep told the OP that they would "connect to my Thunderbolt and troubleshoot the audio problem", I think they were going by the standard "don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.
Can they remotely connect to our phones ? I wasn't aware that they could.

Correct, that's what they said ("don't call tech support from the phone that's having the issue" practice.)
So should I still unroot to be safe before I call them or no....

If you want to be on the safe side, make a nand backup, flash a stock ROM, call them, then restore the backup. I'll pretty sure they can't tell if you have a custom recovery.

If you're bored jump on every TB forum your on and I'm sure you'll find your curiosity satisfied. Maybe it was on BAMF? I could care less how they do it. Liquid AOSP 3.2.
I unrooted just to be safe and the tech rep never said anything and I got them to send me a new sim card and if that doesn't solve my problem (which I don't think it will), then they will send me a new thunderbolt.
When I rooted again after the phone call it wouldn't let me restore my rom and I got stuck in a boot loop. Luckily I had rom zip's on my sd card, so I installed one from scratch, reflashed cwm via rom mgr again, then it let me restore it.
Very weird, and I was terrified I jacked my phone up.

I just recently used to work for at&t customer care and if vzw is anything like them, the only way they can maybe tell is if you have an unlimited data plan plus unofficial tethering app. Or if you send it in for warranty/Asurion replacement. Otherwise i don't really see how they could see in any way if it was rooted

That is understandable, thank you. Still gotta get to my pc. I know people have called in on their rooted devices for certain reasons and been called out only to deny. And of course unroot before going in. For whatever reason. Sticking to it.
That's why I asked what ROM. A support rep could simply tell the person to read them a version # that will be different than "stock".

If so, can I pay to have the phone flashed with just talk and text, and then get the data working my self or is there a certain process that's need to be done with CDMA workshop in order for QSPT to get the data working? Can anyone Enders this please?

Have you tried to manually program with CDMA WS?
The first time I tried it didn't work, and I listed my rez on Craigslist, but then, for some reason, I tried again and that time it worked. Just call up a P+ rep, and tell them you need the values for manually programming the phone.
I didn't program the data because I'm not on the monthly plans.

II'm quite interested but I jacked up something along the way because I completely wiped my entire phone, it won't go past the HTC screen. Been messing with it for 4 hours, I'd love to get this on my phone but I'm at a loss. I'm trying to flash the release keys you posting in RUU and radio images and all that but I think I screwed my phone.
If you can get into recovery then you can sideload the rom. Ive done this with included recovery 2.6.3.3,I never posted the radio, just a twrp backup, but you have to get a rom on the phone to copy the backup into the twrp, backups folder.
Copy the rom to where your adb and fastboot are located connect phone via twrp run this command
adb push nameofrom.zip /sdcard/. exactly as shown here change nameofrom.zip to the name of the rom your trying to flash...this will put a rom on your internal storage and it then can be flashed via twrp

Just the kind of ROM I was looking for. I take it that there's some serious integration with particular AT&T parts of the ROM to make VVM work. I attempted to change the sku id to the international variant (to get rid of the browser bar from settings, get the intl signal icons, and have the ability to toggle between LTE/HSPA+), but messages kept crashing.
Anyways, thanks for the hard work. Runs smooth, and works as advertised

Most of the messaging apps are the same. With all the required files, you only need to change your CID to CWS__001 to get it to integrate into the messages.apk. Even on sprint, Developer, etc, if you change the CID, you will see a black box in the messaging app where the VVM usually resides. I had it working on Viper for a while, but an update messed it up & since I use G Voice, I really haven't had the need. I think it may heve been fixed in Viper though, since I seem to recall one of the recent updates mentioning it now working.
