if i sbf my droid x2 will verizon be able to tell that i rooted the phone?
From my understanding no they will not

SBF and then do a factory data reset from the settings menu. That will wipe everything and do whatever you have to do to send it in...
After sbfing and factory reset, make sure you add a few apps to make look like you actually used the phone. While technically not necessary, it can't hurt. Otherwise it *looks* like you just sbf'd to hide the fact you rooted.
Just my opinion.

i thought so, thanks. i just needed to make sure before i took advantage. Verizon was supposed to send me a new network extender, instead they sent me a new phone, dummies...
You can call them and tell them they made a mistake and that you want to keep your current phone they did something similar to me once. Sent a phone instead of the accessory. I just shipped back the phone they sent after calling them and getting it worked out.
agree with everyone here just sbf it and reset it back to factory settings. i just did this a week ago since i had most likely damaged my battery and cpu after overheating it too much. now i have the new one and im a happy camper lol

I need to send my wife's phone back to verizon. I need to unroot it and get it back to stock before I return it. Is running the Verizon RUU all I need to do to get the phone back to legit? I didn't know if that wipes out the bootloader and everything?
Any input is appreciated.

Yes, it replaces the bootloader, the radio (with a slightly older version than the 7/17 OTA), and the /system, /data, recovery, and boot partitions. You might find that after you do this it will immediately inform you that an update is available (the 7/17 OTA).
That should be sufficient. Highly, highly unlikely that VZW is going to put a crack team of computer forensic scientists "on the case" to investigate your phone. There have been folks who reported (either here or over on AF, I can't remember) that they had returned multiple rooted phones, without making any effort whatsoever to clean them up - and not a peep out of Big Red.

Thank you both for your input.
Her phone is the trackball too...I was really hoping they would come off a different model since this will be her third Eris. Maybe the inevitable next time

If it happens again I would start getting ugly with Verizon and say something like "if you guys can't send me an eris that will work properly then I want a different phone that works." Usually if you complain enough or threaten to go to a competitor they will do something for you.

I flashed the official 2.1 ruu and it flashed my phone to 100% stock. Bootloader, recovery, etc. Got the update notice for the Mr4 so I'm all good now.

So I had originally put the leaked non-rooted GB update on my X2 with no issues. I had been running that for a few days when I decided to replace it with the p3 pre-rooted version. I did an SBF back to Froyo without issue, did the Gingerbreak, etc. The pre-rooted version went on fine with no errors, but then when it came up, the digitizer was unresponsive.
I did several factory resets, SBF back to Froyo again (several times), but the digitizer is still unresponsive....I now can't get past the setup screen. I also noticed that the emergency dial button has a blue highlight around it, and when I press the power button, the "Power Off" item in the menu has a blue highlight around it....almost like if I had a trackball or arrow keys, I could move the highlight....I wonder if it knows the digitizer is not functioning?
Has anyone else seen this? I see one thread on the Motorola site where two people have the same issue after updating the GB (presumable the OTA version since they are posting on that site), but no helpful responses.
My phone is only 3 weks old, so I am tempted to just SBF and try to get a replacement out of Verizon, but thought I would check here first in case I can fix it....or figure out what went wrong so it doesn't happen again.
i'm 1 of the people thats having the SAME EXACT problem as your having............ive sbf'ed like 100 times (no joke) and factory reset about as much............i'm just goin to take it back and hope i can get a replacement..............
I called Verizon and I was on my exact "30 day" since I bought it, so they are shipping me out a new one overnight. I have insurance, so I could have gone through them I suppose if it was after 30 days, but at least I'm getting a brand new one. Now I just have to decide if I'm willing to try it again.
So if more than one person has this issue, I'm guessing it is NOT a hardware problem. However, it is odd to me that doing the SBF doesn't fix it. I wonder what could be happening, maybe someone with more knowledge about this will be able to shed some light.
Unless we figure out what happened and how to potentially fix it, this seems pretty close to a bricked phone. I wonder it is something in the GB update in general, or something going wrong in the manual update!?!?!
Don't these phones have some type of manufactures warranty?
Edit: The phones carry a one year warranty wether or not you purchase insurance. If the hardware fails, as it has in your cases, they will replace it for free.

I did get it replaced, I am more interested in why a handful of us had this happen upon GB updating. Seems odd.

Not All Android Phones Are Built The Same.
I noticed you didn't say you factory reset after you sbf to 2.2.2 in your original post. I don't claim to know for sure but some people are not following this direction, and it MAY be one of the problems. It is recommended that all directions are followed exactly for a successful update. The only way to tell if there is a problem with the method is if everyone follows it to the letter.

Thanks, yes I did factory reset after the SBF. Oh well, this doesn't seem to be widespread and I got a brand new X2 out of it.
Im sending my DX2 back to Verizon and I'm going to get a Dinc2 or another phone that they offer.. Any input on dinc2 or the other phones they offer for exchange, I forgot what they were sorry. But anyway, I SBFd back to 2.3.4. When I did I lost camera, and camcorder? Will Verizon take my phone? How can I get them back or get back to complete stock? Thanks
Honestly they're pretty good at telling if it's been rooted. If they don't care in this case, they could accept your return, or in the worst case, just send it right back to you.

You just need to find the apk files.

Im a noob I probably should not have rooted in the first place, so what do you mean find the apk files... SHOULD NOT HAVE ROOTED! LOL
I will forsure Factory data reset, but I dont know what else to do.
Your camera and camcorder should have came back when you did the sbf. Mine always have. Try going into android recovery and do a factory reset.
Verizon should not be able to tell you were rooted after an sbf since the entire system gets rewritten.

No problem. Let me know if that works for you.
Now that I think about it finding the apks won't help you since you need to rooted to move the files where they need to be.

The one thing I know a bout the dinc2 is that they get horrible reception. That's the main reason I walked away from it. I like the look if the phone though and the features are pretty good but both rural and urban especially rural area get poor reception with those phones. Check the dinc2 communities about the reception which is where I found out about it and a Verizon employee who I asked about it agreed that the reception is horrible and told me I should pic a different one and the x2 is what I had in mind anyway and he suggested it even though it was cheaper then the bionic. I would pick something besides the dinc or dinc 2

Idk if my PMs arent sending or something. They arent showing up in my sent box. To use the factory Android recovery just push the volume up and wolume down buttons at the same time when you see the android and the triangle thing. That should bring the menu up.

When you send a PM you have to check the box that says "Save a copy of this message in your Sent Items folder" under additional settings.
It's already been said, but as far as I know, an SBF should clear up any issues.
Sorry for the repeat of knowledge, but I needed on more post so I can go in the dev thread and ask a question about my Molten rom.

So here's my story, I am not entirely new to rooting as I have successfully rooted my Motorola Droid, My Droid X2, My Acer Iconia a500 (twice), My aunts Lg something, and my mothers Kindle Fire.
So a few days ago my Droid X2 started acting up, and would go hours on end sometimes without working.
I was very happy to find out that Verizon would replace it with no hassle as it was less than a year old. I got the replacement yesterday and it's working great... that is until I found out it came stock with 2.3.5 right out of the box.
Now I have always trusted XDA forums and have used them for a long time (although I finally just registered today to ask this)
The only root method I can find is to downgrade to 2.3.4 and then root, then install voodoo root protector, then upgrade.
Now I saw a few things about possibilities of bricking your phone when trying to read those tutorials (I have never had to downgrade before) and I was a bit concerned.
I was mainly wondering, I don't care about loosing data on the phone. I have a backup sd card I can use if I need to format that, and like I said, the phone is new and actually doesnt have a single app I have installed on it yet.
Is there any easy way to go back down to 2.3.4 for my situation? I just got the free phone and don't want to brick it a day later you know?
From what I gather, you can SBF back down to 2.3.4 with no problem. There may be a certain way you have to do it though. I have never been on stock 2.3.5 so I cant tell you from experience. But Everyone says it's possible.
That's my question in a nutshell
Yeah, I read a tutorial about how to do it using RSDlite, which I downloaded to my comp.
Now what I'm cautious about is white file to use. One of the tutorials had one, now while I know a tiny bit about rooting I know NOTHING about flashing it back, I wasn't sure if there was a way that this could screw up my phone, as it seems everything tested is with a phone that had already been rooted, or if there is anything phone specific in that file, or even if it actually is an OTA original (I'd rather not mess around with anything customized right now)
Whatever is the easiest method for getting be back down, I know how to take it from there as I've done it before.
Thanks for the response though!

So you have never used an SBF file? If you would have used it on your broken Droid X2 when it wasnt acting right, it might have fixed your phone. An SBF file simply wipes everything of your phone (excluding your SD card) and flashes brand new software on it. The SBF files are provided by Motorola so its not like you are using something made by a dev and can break your phone easily. You should be able to use RSD lite to flash the 2.3.4 SBF file and you should be fine. But then again, I have never SBF'd from 2.3.5 to 2.3.4 personally so I would feel bad saying go ahead with no worries and something bad happen. So wait for someone else to respond first.
Thanks!
Thanks for that info!
Also, I doubt that would have fixed my old phone, it seems pretty much like a hardware issue. The screen will display static for hours on end (think like an old tv if you didnt have cable plugged in) I think it's a loose connection somewhere or something. I didn't bother to really troubleshoot it myself though because I was like "lets see if Verizon will give me a new one" and they did, and because they didnt have any "replacements" i got a brand new one, with a brand new battery, so I wasn't going to argue the fact
Anyway, if the file is from Motorola where can I get it? I saw on a verizon forum that they were not allowed to post it there (or is it "from motorola" in the sense it was leaked?)
Thanks for all your help so far, you've been great!

Yeah, it does sounds like it was a hardware problem. Actually, I never thought about if motorola had a list of sbf files somewhere or if they were just leaked or what. I always downloaded them from threads like these. I just know they are made by motorola. You got me curious now. hmmm...
Duh
forget about my question as to where to get them, just saw the sticky at the front of this forum.
Although, it would be interesting to know if they were officially given out by motorola or leaked

bro, you wont have any problems downgrading/sbfing back to 2.3.4, i did it without any problems
i used sbf_flash through linux though idk about RSDLite
ok, so i lost my phone a while back and got a replacement for it... same phone and everything... well i find it and charge it and all my old stuff is stil on there... so i do a factory data reset and the majority of my stuff is STILL on there... ok, so i go ahead and RSD flash it with 198_7, hoping that this would do the trick... my info is STILL on there...
i've already tried removing the account from the accounts app in my list, but it won't let me since it doesn't get service... does anyone know anything that i can do to remove my stuff so i can pass the phone on to whoever???
Put it on Wifi?
Oh and you won't be able to do much with that phone. Highly likely since you reported it missing the ESN is locked down. Got your self a Wifi enabled MP3 Player now.

in order for it to be connected to any hotspot, its got to have service... i've tried that one too and it keeps telling me "ERROR" every time i hit the WiFi button...
Is your phone unlocked and has a custom rom? Because it sounds like you are on a phone with a fried wifi radio or your on a rom that was having issues with the wifi drivers like an old joker blur rom but if your unlocked and have cwm just wipe everything

nope... nothing special about it... i did have it rooted and locked... that's about it... i already flashed the stock 198_7 on it to unroot it and back to factory settings... only thing i'm trippin on is the fact that some of my stuff still remains on this damn thing... idk why the "factory data reset" doesn't want to work either... goes through the motions but no results...
Hello,
As for passing it on to a friend, Metro PCS used to not check for bad ESN's when Activating Phones, but this might have changed now that they are selling Cell Phones. That indeed does not make sense that your information is still on there after doing a Factory Reset. I suppose you could connect it to your Notebook and delete all Files with any Personal Information.
Cheers,
JJ
How are you doing your hard reset? A hard reset erases all your data. I think booting into recovery, pushing the volume up and down keys at the same time, and then selecting "wipe data/factory reset" would do it right.
Undertstand that you also would need to do stuff with the phone programming - your phone number and some other account information would be in there. when I got my phone (used), Spring had me do something to wipe everything including the programming information. Of course I didn't take notes, so I don't know how to do it again.
This is probably a dumb question, but have you removed your sd chip?
