[Q] Problem with some root apps. - Motorola Photon 4G

Just curious as to whether anyone else has gotten the following apps to work:
Unlock with WiFi
Dual Mount SD
These worked good on my EVO but no dice on the Photon. Suggestions?

Unlock with Wifi won't work if you're using something like Juice Defender or any app that turns wifi off because UWW needs wifi to remain on.
Cant answer your 2nd app.

Yea....read through the FAQ already. I don't have anything like that on my phone as far as I know unless it is something that came stock on it (I did notice there was some kind of task manager on there).
Do you have it working on your phone?

Wonder if Battery Manager is interfering with it? I'm new to Motorola myself so that feature is new to me, but check that setting on your phone real quick?

Not sure what Battery Manager you are referring to. Can you clarify please?

*Update* Been working with the dev for Dual Mount SD and there might be an update to fix it this week. Also, I may have fixed the issue with Unlock for Wifi. Need more time to test it though.

Settings -> Battery & Data Manager

I can't get Custom Android Font Changer to apply the font change...anyone else try this app yet with their photon? Maybe I need to run the root script again?
EDIT: Root check told me I had busybox, but I didn't. Installed busybox and it now works great!

I'm set on performance but it doesn't make a difference. Believe that is mostly for sync settings anyways.

There is a bit of a debate about whether root for the Photon is actually 100%. App devs are saying no and rom devs are saying yes.
All I know is some of my favorite root apps used on my ogEVO I cannot use on the Photon which is a real bummer. If anyone could figure out why that would be awesome.
A couple of the apps I would like to use: Unlock for WiFi & Dual Mount USB
In regards to Dual Mount USB by Protocol-X, seems the directories it needs access to exist but cannot be written to for some reason even though in Root Explorer I have set proper permissions. Other rooted phones don't have this issue and I would like to know why.
Anyone have insight into any of this??

HOW TO:Root, Install Clockwork, Remove Bloatware, and more*updated 3/2/11*

I compiled this for someone at DroidForums and I figured I would post it here.
In order to complete all of these steps, you will need:
ROM Manager
Titanium Backup Pro
Root Explorer
SetCPU
Odin v1.3
A file manager like Astro to install the APKs.
SetCPU can be downloaded here for free: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=505419
It can also be bought from the Market. The others also need to be purchased or downloaded.
In order to root, follow the instructions here: http://forum.androidcentral.com/verizon-fascinate-rooting-roms-hacks/33899-how-root.html
Here is a link for Mac users: http://forum.androidcentral.com/ver...s/34188-rooting-using-mac-video-tutorial.html
ClockworkMod Recovery Installation instructions are here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=942021 You can also flash the new recovery with Rom Manager, but for now, I recommend the recovery in the link.
At this point, you should be rooted with CWM Recovery. Now, it's time to install Froyo.
Follow the link here, and you will find Odin files for quickly installing EB01: http://www.droidforums.net/forum/sa...roms-w-root-new-clockwork-updated-2-11-a.html
NOTE: You will need to wipe when you go from 2.1 to 2.2. Be sure to back up everything before the upgrade.
Now, you will need a rom. I would recommend SuperClean by Adrynalyne: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=910921 It includes a kernel and there are Voodoo and NonVoodoo versions. This will remove all bloatware, including TouchWiz and Bing. However, the browser will still search with Bing. Then, use the themes sub-forum to find a theme.
You can use ROM Manager-Download-sonofskywalker3 to find all sorts of options. Stock apps, de-Binged browsers, new boot animations, widgets, etc. Anything you didn't want removed can be downloaded there.
If you need to return to stock, you'll need to use Odin. Ask any questions in this thread and I will do my best to answer them. You can also post a thread on XDA(make sure it's in the right section!), or visit the IRC at: webchat.freenode.net channel: #samsung-fascinate
I take no credit for anything here.

I'm not sure. I'll edit my OP and say it's very risky, since you are the only person I have heard of that it doesn't cause issues.
uh oh
I just deleted all these apps. Am i in trouble when froyo comes out?
It looks like wireless tether doesn't work for me, and I did delete 3G Mobile Hotspot, so maybe it makes sense to go slow at this before jumping in. I'm not having any problem connecting to wi-fi, though, so if that's all you want then maybe you'll be fine. I use backup assistant so I can't comment on what could happen if that's deleted.
Freezing/hiding apps seems to be the best way to make sure you aren't looking for backup apps somewhere...

Yes it is. That's why I recommend it. I also find it easier than moving them to the SD card with root explorer like a lot of people are doing, but to each his own.
EDIT: I tried Wireless Tether, and it started just fine. I didn't try connecting anything to it, but I know it at least starts. I can't tell if they blocked tethering or if deleting Mobile Hotspot affects it.

My iPod wouldn't connect either. I would try my computer, but I don't have a wireless card anymore since I moved the router up here and am wired into it. There's gotta be something to do. I played around with the channels and nothing worked.

Here's the system dump: http://forum.androidcentral.com/fascinate-roms-hacks/32839-fascinate-system-dump.html
I have removed [moved] both Backup Assistant and Mobile 3G Hotspot and I have no issues with Wireless Tether. Before assuming Mobile 3G Hotspot is the cause of your issues, try verifying Wireless Tether works for you beforehand. There was a thread dedicated to Wireless Tether not working by a senior member only to find out it was user error.
There's more than one way to move/remove apps and I'm sure we all can confirm deleting .apk files is NOT the best option. I've used Titanium Backup to freeze apps which I could not locate the .apk for, but I prefer moving the .apk files. This is because I've been in a force-close loop after moving a file and the only solution would be to move the file back and reboot the phone. This can be done via ADB. If you freeze an app and you get in a force-close loop you may not be able to use Titanium Backup's GUI to un-freeze an app.
I move to the SD card to free up space on the phone, which comes in handy if you're replacing stock apps from other places. Plus, it gives me an easy view of what to move to/from the /system/app folder if I need to put apps back when there is an OTA (or if someone asks me "what apps did you remove?")
Move/rename/freeze... pick your poison, but please don't delete.

Yup. If you delete, you have to handle the process of moving apps from the system dump. I don't think a factory reset would work, since the apps aren't there and it has nowhere to restore them from.
Just installed CMW and removed bloatware from these instructions, everything went great. Appreciate your time to do the write up.
I'm still interested in doing the lag fix, I did notice a difference with my phone. I ran it one week with it, and one week without and I've noticed a difference. Anyone else running it with all this setup?

The lag fix seems to have very mixed results. Some people say it has caused lag, some have trouble un-doing it, some notice no difference. So I haven't taken the risk. I also need the internal memory it takes away. I would consider it if it would fix those occasional stutters and freezes, and actually make a difference.

Is there anyone else using Barnacle with this phone? It seems to work great except for when i try to stop the tethering. the UI shows it has stopped but the device i am tethered to is clearly still receiving data?

Why use Barnacle? The native tethering works better (actually behaves as an AP instead of adhoc) once you freeze or delete TetherManager2.apk

Yes - but it would be needed for Barnacle anyway.
"freeze" is something you can do with TitaniumBackup.
I usually just manually remove it in an ADB shell.

I don't think anything is safe any more. AT&T seems to be doing deep packet inspection now.
So far people who have tethered Android tablets don't seem to have problems, but even light tethering with a PC gets you nailed now.

Liquid Gingerbread 3.1, flash issues, market issues..

Firstly, I want to say that the ROM is fantastic, I'm loving it!
Recently Im coming into issues, though. Any websi te with flash. Its saying I need flash, and when I go to the market to update flash, it says its not compatible with my phone.. in fact. A lot of apps on the market are saying not compatible with my phone now.. Any ideas? Thanks
Bump... Need a fix please =/
Samething is happening with mine too.
Sent from my HTC ThunderBolt using XDA App
Bump..... Please help?
First, get titanium backup. Completely uninstall flash via TB, then reboot. Download flash from the market and it should work fine.
If after that you end up with flash audio but no sound, then you need to get an app called " root explorer " and edit a system file to fix it. I can't remember off the top of my head which file and where but that issue was discussed in the liquid 3.0 thread, maybe 3.1, not too sure now.
Signature.
I found the reason apps are saying "not compatible" with your device. Apparently my google profile has my phone and two other randomly named devices on it... Anyone know how to get rid of the useless ones? I cannot for the life of me find where to delete these device profiles...

I haven't been able to delete them, but you can hide them from device lists in the Market and they won't give you that problem
on the webpage, click on the settings wheel in the top left corner --> my market account --> settings tab, click edit on any devices you don't use --> hidden in menus (under visibility), and make sure you hit update
I'm trying that, but this is absolutely ridiculous. There are three devices listed, and when I click to hide two of then, only one is hidden and the other two show, no matter what....
Turns out that this is a known issue to google, they're working on a fix. Hopefully soon, and hopefully the cause (and fix) behind all this.

At least you got it to install, I get the message telling me that it's incompatible with my device. However, the TWC TV app (which it is likely rebranded from) installs fine. Just doesn't do much good when I have Brighthouse.
Brightouse is claiming "A rooted device does not allow us to set the permissions the LiveTv app needs to function properly".
Is this not such a bunch of crap. If their coders were worth a gain of salt they should have no problem changing or modding any permissions their app requires.
I'm guessing they are scared that rooted devices are able to record anything on the desktop. Sadly there are apps to help non-rooted devices to record the desktop too. So what would be the point of even searching for the xbin folder, which again I'm guessing that they are doing.. If this in fact what they are doing, could we add an app to rename that folder when the BH app is launched and rename it back when it closes?

Sounds like a bunch of bull****. A bit pissed that it aint working because of the stupid rooted crap. Someone has to find a way to modify the installation of this app but who will????
Thanks guys for the responds. Like everyone is saying it is a bunch of BULL****, but hopefully someone will come up for a solution to break this. By the way I started thinking why does it matter if our phones are rooted to B.H.. We pay them for service to our TV/Internet not our phones. It is not of their business what we do with our phones and if we made a decision to root, they should not block this app. to us. We pay the same amount that the person that did not root and they get to use this App.
I tried a little but the program won't get far enough along to help because usb debugging was enabled. I was using eclipse to monitor the log file while I launched the app.
There's a somewhat interesting (too much iFruit for me) discussion here http://www.dslreports.com/forum/r27195196-iPhone-Android-tablet-users-get-Bright-House-TV-App-Joy- on the subject. Looks like the reason behind the ICS only is because of DRM. Is it possible, the same reasoning was applied to devices being rooted or not?
the TWC app got a fix for rooted users, any chance there will be a rooted-compatible apk for the brighthouse app?

[MOD][6/5] - Tether Hack

The Tether Hack and Tether hack with WiFi notification should work on stock rooted and stock de-odex I545VRUAMDK based ROMS.
If your rocking a custom ROM check with your ROM dev for changes to framework-res.apk BEFORE flashing this.
The other two mods, Remove E911 Icons, and disable Ongoing WiFi Noticiation NEED a de-odex ROM.
The orginal "Tether Hack doesnt always kill the WiFi Notification so I rebuilt the mods using a different method.
EDIT: One of the mods were removed because it caused GPS Issues.
Mods / Features
Tether Hack.zip
Adds Free tether for everyone
Removes ongoing WiFi Notification in status bar
Thanks to shoman94 for his help re-compiling framework-res. He has a good tut HERE!

I am curious how you got this to complie and run. I tried removing com.samsung.sgp and the line below it from my framework-res. I even added the + to the different files that needed it. When I would recompile my phone would just sit at the verizon logo.
Did you do anything else besides adding the + to the layout lines?

After posting the exact same question in the Q&A thread, I found it was because I needed to clear the cache/dalvik cache (maybe one or the other, but I did both).
I was able to successfully boot after doing so.

Compression has to be set to "None" on Samsung framework-res.apk
Thanks for posting this, both of the mods work great.
Just a quick question. With regards to the Tether Hack, how does this compare to apps like pdanet which bypass the subscription check but still seem to use the stock Wifi Hotspot? I don't know what exactly is happening behind the scenes with these other apps, if they do anything other than bypass the check. As an unlimited data user, is it "safer" to use pdanet or the other apps, or are you really just doing the same thing they provide without the need for another app?
Thanks again.
i already am using the widget to bypass the subscription check, just curious exactly what this tether hack does. also does it allow for USB tethering as well

I never used one of those apps so I cant honestly tell you what they do. However I can tell you what this one does...
It bypasses the Samsung tether check and just turns it on.
I have used this mod for quite some time and never had any one complain about being busted by Big Red... However AT&T and this mod will get you busted if you use it excessively.

It hacks the tether feature samsung put in the ROM to call upon another app to verify the subscription.
So instead of
1. Tether app start
2. Call App to check subscription
3. Return results to tether app
4. Tether... Or not Tether...
It goes...
1. Start tether app
4. Tether.
Steps 2 and 3 are removed from the framework of the ROM
Yes on USB and if I wasnt so damned lazy I could even do Bluetooth... But this is good enough for 99.99% of the people. Who the hell uses Bluetooth anyways... Damn kids and there fads

These apps are using something momentary (IE: The hack has to happen every time you push the *Big Friendly Button*) to bypass the check; I'm not sure what and I haven't had the opportunity/need to go digging into the how. I use Widgetsoid and it does the same thing.
This hack is permanent; it happens when you flash and doesn't require anything afterward. It allows you to use the included app on the phone without having to download any free apps that might have limits or ads and there's no paid version (FoxFi, for example). It means there are less "moving parts" involved, and theoretically, there are fewer things that could go wrong.
As for is one "safer" than the other...I'll assume you mean any less likely to get you in trouble...and the answer is no. They're achieving the same thing through different methods; one's just a bit "cleaner" than the others.
EDIT: Didn't see Scott's post...damn pages. Still relevant, I think.

Thanks

Thanks for the reply and good to know. I already have flashed a mod that removes the ongoing WiFi notification so obviously Im going to make a backup and flash this, see if it plays nice with the mod already installed

It will work fine. We used the exact same method to override the WiFi notification.
However after further testing... If you download something it will come back.
At least it did for me
Then again my phone is in a constant state of flux so... I may not even have the mod installed, lol
Is it possible to implent the smart stay notification removal hack. Currently, I have to choose between the RWC95 hack (ongoing wifi and smart stay) and yours. I'm having issues running the two hacks together as it seems some stuff cancels one another out. Could you possibly help and talk with him (RWC95) about merging your two hacks together? That'd be great
when you say this works on stock rooted i assume you mean it can work on odex roms right?

I have no desire to remove that icon. If someone needs my help with something (which rwc95 does not, as I have worked on stuff with him before, he knows what he is doing) they can reach out to me.

Right this is just a resource hack. Framework-res does not have any smali code and subsequently no dex or odex files.
Which app are you using to tether?
Hi Scott,
Thanks for developing the Clean Rom!
I've used your clean rom on the S3 and the S4 and I must admit it's some good stuff you've developed.
I've installed this tether hack but after reading this thread, I'm not clear on what app you are using to tether?
Is it the mobile hotspot app from the Big Red?
Or does Samsung have their own separate tethering app?
I know it's a newbie question, but any info would be appreciated.
Thanks again!
Where is the tether app icon? I can't find it anywhere...
Is this the TrevE tether?
What exactly does this do since we already have a hot spot with this phone?
Also, when flashing do the cache's need to be wiped?
