Since I went android, I've had nothing but HTC phones. I loved my Eris, incredible, & now thunderbolt. I've been following up on all these tech news, and I am starting to get curious of other phones. So my question to you all is, what phone would you guys consider outside of HTC? I've been following up on the 5" Samsung galaxy q that we only have rumors about, mainly because it has a bigass screen and I currently don't own a tab. If it had usb host mode then it would be a no brainer for me. I'm sold. But I looove HTC tho. I wish they could make a 5" phone/tab.

More screen to hide a REAL battery beneath though. Still, I'm not a fan of looking like a world-class dork holding a phone nearly the width of a 2x4 to my head for a call. Not to mention it probably looks about as garish as a Desert Eagle strapped to your side beneath a shirt or jacket. Who was it that made that phone/tab thing that was just HUGE? Dell, I think it was. Too massive to be a good phone, too dinky to be a good tablet... The only thing to out-class it in "WEIRD..." is that frankenphone Kyocera makes with the unfold-expand-"I'm a Nintendo DS Android!" thing.
That said, I'm a Samsung fan in all reality. Up until I went BlackBerry, that's all I would buy. And then Samsung met Android and began gene splicing with... SOMETHING... and I do NOT like it. It's the digital equivalent of a butterface. It's all sexy and smooth inside and out, but then you look at the screen and say "oh dear... there's NO way I'm gonna live with that hook-nose, acne-scarred, Jay Leno chinned monstrosity of a UI. The ONLY thing worse than AOSP and it's mutant launchers, in my opinion, is WizTouch, or whatever it's called. That would disappear from any Samsung I owned within hours.
As for Motorola... I'll quote myself. "There's some boner-inducing devices". Quirky TI CPUs that leave you asking "Where's the GHz?", pale and pasty screens, Motorola's world-famous garbage radios, E-Fuse, and a LONG history of making some of the worst phones ever. Any Motorola is the last device I'd own.
LG... At least they didn't try to be original and fail. Looks like ADW on AOSP mostly. More junk radios though.
I'm sure most didn't see it coming 5 or 6 years ago, but HTC does seem to be where it's at, with Samsung on their heels. Now if Samsung would just ramp up capacity on those AMOLED screens and outsource them again, little puppies wouldn't have to die.

I might be wrong, but I thought there was already a 5" samsung on ATT. If so I would agree you better try holding up to your ear and putting in your pocket before you sink money into buying it. Trying it there right now would be a good sign whether you should forget about buying it whenever it comes to verizon.
I'm guessing none of you are big guys, I'm 6'2" and I have large hands and 4.3" phones are a little small when in landscape and typing. Another 1/4-1/2" would be perfect for me, while others still think a 3.7" screen is the sweet spot. Also you have to keep in mind that the rumor is that these new phones with larger screens have smaller bezels.

I'm 6'4 so a little on you . However, I use swype so typing in landscape works okay for me. Normally do it with just my thumb. Other keyboards that use touch typing, well...results may vary

Lol. U guys are a trip. I'm 6"2 but I do feel like my thunderbolt is kinda adequately sized. But I'm a photographer, I like to view my images on something other than my camera when I'm nowhere near my imac. I don't own a laptop. And the tablet market has not caught up with the multimedia market yet. But I'm aware some phones and tablets have usb hosting mode. So a phone/tablet would be ideal. 5.3" screen would be an adequate in-between size for tablet and phone use imo. But the idea of usb host is what would sell me on something like that. It may not even be a possibility for that matter so... Well just have to wait n see.

I have to use an AT&T phone for work so I chose the Atrix...it's pretty decent since it got updated to 2.3.4 but the UI is absolute garbage. It's snappy like I want it to be, but you are exactly right about the colors on the screen being incredibly muted. At the end of the day though I am quite happy to switch to my bolt.
I have been a bit curious about the Bionic that seems like it may actually be coming out soon-ish. If they did something about the terrible color quality it could potentially be worth looking into. My wife just got a Droid 3 because she refuses to have a phone without a physical keyboard...it's not terrible. Haven't played with it too much, but from what I have played with I wasn't too disappointed with.
I'd still want to stay away from Moto phones for a while. Any influence google will have over them probably wont happen until the generation after the next so whatever comes out later this year will probably be similar to what Moto has done in the past.

Yeah, I'd say most of what is in the bionic is already set other than some software tweaks they may do. Hopefully it wont have blur on it, but I wouldn't hold my breath since it's a phone that's been in the works for a while.

Some people just want the best hardware build quality and for that you have to get Motorola. As long as the bionic gets rooted I want it. I'm trying to hold out on a replacement phone until it comes out because I won't use LG or Samsung and this is my 4th thunderbolt so my next replacement they will replace with a different 4g phone. The thunderbolt has good software, with its bugs but all phones do, and the BAMF roms are great but the poor build quality of these phones is something I'm not gonna deal with anymore. I've played with a incredible and it seemed much better in terms of quality so I wouldn't write off HTC phones like I have LG and Samsung, I just think its because they rushed to get a 4g phone out.

Sorry man... I'm just gonna have to disagree with you on the whole Motorola build quality thing. I've gone though so many of those phone it's not even funny. The electronics and radios they use are garbage. My dad had a thing for Motorola for some ungodly reason and had these things laying around all over the place. Every time I activated one to give to someone it either buzzed so loud you couldn't hear anything, the mic would just randomly die, the controls didn't work/respond, the displays looked like crap, and without a single exception, NONE of them had a radio in them worth a damn. I couldn't even call into customer service to complain because the POS wouldn't work on the switchboard! Totally and completely worthless devices that couldn't so much as hold a signal to receive a text while I'd be on my Samsung chatting away. They sold those POS Razr's like crack to addicts, but they were garbage! Now my buddy has a DX that flips on and off, hangs up in calls, just stops responding, and goes and does stuff all by itself. Surprised? I wasn't. Pretty par for the course given what I've seen Motorola crank out for the last 6 years. I told the last guy who tried selling me on a Motorola that he'd have an easier time selling condoms in a convent. It's not often I hate on a product or company this much, but honestly, if they were giving Bionics away for free I STILL wouldn't activate one on one of my lines.

I spent about an hour tonight checking out the Amaze at my local tmo store and I was impressed with the feel and build quality. I compared it to the Samsung and while it's display was nice the rest of the phone left me wanting, the default dpi is way off (I'm not legally blind) and the UI was lacking as well. On the other hand Sense was not as bad as I thought it would be, I can feel ok knowing that HTC has stated that ICS will be released for my phone, where on the other hand Samsung has a poor track record on updates comparatively. The kicker is I can pick it up for 99 bucks through our corporate rep with no activation and a 10% discount on the monthly. Bye bye Optimus-T, hello Amaze 4G.
Also hoping for s-off soon which should allow for more ROMs.

You don't actually need S-Off.
You can flash any rom available for the Amaze 4G.
The only problem is that you may have to manually flash the kernel (boot.img) file.
Has anyone noticed any screen bleed from the capacitive buttons? I bought a slightly used one from the market to use on attand it has horrible screen bleed.
I wish I could send it in to htc for a replacement but I don't think they would allow it. Other than that the phone is basically new. It's a shame but guess I'll either keep it as a backup to my vivid or sell or trade it.

Interesting.. SO the bleed comes from those buttons. Maybe HTC will release a patch to dim them a little. I have the Evo 3 and there is no screen bleed.
Htc makes really solid devices and ive been really happy with what ive seen but.. dunno how to say this
Htc make amazing devices and probably the best but they always have a flaw. Ive had:
touch pro 2- overall not that gr8
Nexus one - screen multitouch problem
Htc hd 2 - screen broke easily (atleast for me cuz i broke 3)
Htc mytouch 4g - actually that was the best phone as far as build quality ive seen (of all time)
Htc sensation - dust bunnies all over ...well everything to be honest
And now screen bleed from the buttons.
Maybe we should write a letter to htc and tell them to check their phones one more time before selling them.
Dont get me wrong regardless of those issues i still think that Htc makes the best phones.

Really you paid good money for this phone and would take 1 issue over another. It's people like you that encourage these OEM to not gave a damn about quality control . I wouldn't even call this screen bleed. The light comes from those buttons and not the lcd screen itself. I am sure it can be solved if they lower the brightness but either way it doesn't bother me. Disable the button light and you wouldn't see it.

Hate to shatter your tiny rose-colored world, but nothing in life is perfect. No matter how much you spend on something, it inherently has flaws [see:luxury items]. Htc/Samsung/Motorola make really good phones and we pay a good amout of money for them but lately the have been halfassing on the quality control and thats not good. We have to tell them to fix it because we are the final consumer.
Im pretty sure that if there was no screen bleed we wouldve found something else to be unsatisfied about but this is xda. We are here to improve the user experience and in order to do that we cant think like you.

So.....
Back to the reason I started this thread, After 4 days with my Amaze I have to say I love it, my Optimus-T feels like a toy in comparison now. I do however notice the bleed from the capacitive buttons and would like to be able to set a time out regardless of lighting situation, which would take care of any real complaints since you would most likely only notice it while viewing some sort of media.
Just wondering what phones X2 owners were looking at for when their upgrade rolls around. I was thinking about the nexus or the S2. Not sure yet. I'm eligible for an early upgrade and I have no idea what phone I should get. I like rooting my device and playing around with it, so probably something that doesn't have a locked bootloader. I like the X2 because it's completely touchscreen, I hate the slideout keyboards. Then again I might wait to see what comes out in the next 3 months I have left on my contract. What are your thoughts? What do you guys want next?

^ Agree with these guys. If you upgrade now, I would go with either the HTC Rezound or Samsung Galaxy Nexus. I just traded my iPhone (wasn't using it) for a Nexus, then gave the Nexus to my friend. I must admit... it is gorgeous. But if you decide to wait, I think the Galaxy SIII or the HTC One X would be aaaaahhhhmazing.
S3 looks like it may not be all that hot. Some say its a little upgrade, who knows. I can upgrade whenever thanks to my BBB complaint. Ill wait to see how that phone comes out then ill upgrade to Rezound or that. Nexus looks great but battery is terrible even the extended is crap. I'll take a 13nm phone with a 2750 battery over one that doesnt do much.
Verizon was dumb for not grabbing the note... Journal is a horrible name but I would have loved to switch for one, played with one for about half an hour... Its amazing even on stock and this screen is now way way to small, the note comes close to being the right size for my hand its barely to small bit if it comes to verizon its gonna be to late, A 5.6in screen with a trident style case is now my hope for the future. Im wanting a quad core with 2gb ram a massive battery and a big screen i dont care if it's heavy and fat... I want power to go

Im wanting a quad core with 2gb ram a massive battery and a big screen i dont care if it's heavy and fat... I want power to go

I would have to take a real hard look at the note if we got it. If not I may leave Verizon to get one.
I got a Dinc2 as a replacement for the X2 3 weeks ago. I will not go back to a locked phone again, I love this thing and I love HTC's build quality. If I stick with Verizon I'll be looking at a rezound this fall, should be cheap to upgrade to by then.
From my Inc2 running Inc2 HD
Not sure what i'll get but I'm hoping there will be more architecture similar to the 3 in 1 Asus Padphone.
Yea I'm waiting for May 3rd to see GS3 and then go from their. To me its ALL about the battery, here's to something that's over 2200 or whatever they think it is. A non removable phone that has THST LOW of a battery is laughable for those specs. I don't think many would deny that.

What is the likelihood of we getting a S3 this summer? I was (and still am a little) skeptical of the Big Red getting the SIII... But the rumor mill is cranking out stories like the SIII is slated for release on Verizon, T-Mobile and AT&T... So may be I don't hafta kill a kitty this summer... Verizon, you may have just saved the lives of 1.1 Kitties... And you may have not effed me in the ass! Seriously, Big R's mobile lineup is an orgy of fugly looking Motorola phones and oh no-good-excuse-of-a-smartphones from Sammy (except the Gnex) and I believe just 1 good'ne from HTC... So basically 2 phones worth buying... Appalling stuff, Red.. Same story with AT&T... We are being bombarded by mediocre phones, man!
Lol yea I accidentally misstyped that on this crappy phone. My BBB complaint, is over and they're letting me upgrade anytime so deff. waiting to at least May 3rd. Also theirs a rumor VZW will be getting it first before anyone in the U.S so we shall see. Then we have the Razr HD... ok. Yea maybe... prolly not.

Yep, it's getting to the point that I don't care how good they're damn network is if the phones are so overloaded with crap and bugs that they won't run right the network is useless.
I got a pair of Dinc2's as a replacement for mine and my wife's X2's. She wanted to run stock for awhile. She doesn't use many apps, mostly FB, words with friends, couple of games. But she's on the phone constantly. Well the one thing that should work is the damn phone, and while it does its just not laid out well. However she is constantly getting force closes, has to manually sync her email, stuff like that.
I'm done with big red when this contract is up I think. The network is great and they're customer service has been great, but every phone has been ****. I shouldn't have to hack a phone and load a custom Rom just to make it operate correctly and reliably, it should do that out of the box. Only reason I should have to hack it is because I want to play with it, customize it to my liking. NOT TO MAKE IT JUST WORK THE WAY IT'S SUPPOSED TO.
Verizon can kiss my ass.

I needed a replacement device due to heating and finally my third device is spot on except it had pink keys... grrrrrr.. what's the general consensus, should I deal with it or ask for yet another one?
Took me three tries this week. They also have warranty replacements that are new. They get them from htc to build stock when phone initialy released. It's not new in a box but its new. Way to tell is ##778# call, then press view then display. Look at life counter, it never resets even after ruu, wipe, etc.
First two I got had 100+ hrs usage, my third was a new one. No usage perfect keys

Both of the replacements are new but the one with perfect keys overheats batteries on a dangerous level. This one just has fugly keys... like really really pink, almost white pink. Think it's worth harassing them again? I'm slightly worried they will stop sending me phones.
They won't stop sending you phones (I've never reached that point) I went through 4 Rezounds for dead pixels. My keys were a bit pink, and I didn't want to deal with it again. Just think of it as you're not afraid to show your feminine side . Seriously if the phone isn't over heating at all, just deal with it. if it bothers you that much you can open the phone and use a red sharpie on the leds. Or if you know how to do it, you can remove the white leds and add red ones. Just search it and the thread will pop up.
Personally for the money I'd bug em until I get one that works. Mine is red with no temp issues so they do exist.
Eventually they will start offering other phones. Many have gone from the rezound to the gnex or vice.versa that way.
I would be completely happy with a great piece of hardware that had slightly pinkish buttons. As android hobbyists, we require better hardware for a few reasons. One reason is because we know enough to notice imperfections. The other is we are pushing them harder to utilize such powerful hardware. If you have a perfectly running phone that you're happy with performance wise, I would rather keep that than trade in the device for something with a bigger imperfection such as overheating.
As a sidenote I noticed the capacitive buttons were extremely bright. When I changed the capacitive button lighting from bright mode to dim mode they didn't only look better when turned down, they looked very red and lost the slight pinkish tone.
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda premium
I don't get why anyone cares about pink keys. It's such a non-issue that I didn't really understand what people were talking about when they said they were sending their phones back for it.
i really think you people are ridiculous for sending a phone in just bc the buttons are pink...
I don't. I would absolutely tell them your keys are pink and you bought a phone that's supposed to have red ones... If the keys are defective. I wonder what else would be.
I paid full price for mine... My first was (i thought was messed up and so did the reps) good, this one is the 2nd I've had and its perfect (it was also brand new).
I was in the store and over heard them telling someone that they might be charged for a defect because they had sent in two before (not this phone, I think it was the nex). I just thought to myself. I'd send a million in until they get it right for the price I paid for this thing. It's ridiculous for anyone to think they have to accept defective devices they spent 800 dollars on. Now if it was given to me i wouldn't care in the slightest.
Maybe HTC will make the next one better because they get so many exchanges.

Id ask for a new rezound, not refurbished. It just depends on what rep you speak to. They actually are offering me a razr maxx becuase of the battery issues ive been having. My first rezound too. Just be firm but polite as well.
I've gone from fascinate to droid charge to rezound by just asking for a different device after the 3rd refurb. You should be able to get anything but a razr maxx.

That's my exact track as well lol. Keep getting refurbs leading to new devices. I'm not sure if I would want anything else honestly, I meant the galaxy nexus has MIUI and CM9 but the hardware on the rezound is so much nicer >.< Also it ended up having a bad front speaker and I couldn't make phone calls. New device is here with a life of 316 and time of 16 hours lol. I couldn't live with a lesser camera after being spoiled by this one.
I really like this phone. The battery just sucks though. It's the only thing I can really complain about.

I love my rezound, but after going through the Droid Inc, Thunderbolt and now the Rezound, with crazy problems on all of them, im pretty much done with HTC. I also got tired of Sense after having it for so long. Also, 5.5" screen cannot be denied. Note 2 was announced this morning for mid november on all carriers, so im getting a white 16 note 2 at launch.
sweet. i'm gonna hold out and get that new big HTC that may be announced today

Yeah I'm considering the note 2, esp since htc announced a windows phone instead of something nice for android
Sent from my ADR6425LVW using xda app-developers app
5.5" is way too freaking big for a phone that I carry around all the time. If I need that much screen real estate, I'll get get out the 7" tab. 4.3" is just right.
Plus Samsung radios = fail, and VZW Note 2 bootloader = locked.
Personally I think it would be nice to have but would not want something that big in my pocket. It would look strange on my belt...

Its hardly too big, its just a tiny bit bigger then the rezound, the bezel is very tiny on it. Also, the radios on the S3 are great, you must be thinking of the Nexus which had very poor radios. And the locked bootloader on the S3 for Verizon took a week to crack, on the rezound, 5-6 months for S-Off and you had to short your phone and possibly brick it.
I think ill take my chances with samsung personally.
Well, first of all, S-OFF is not related to unlocking the bootloader. I could still do everything I want to do on this phone without it being S-OFF...it just makes things a bit easier, and I can unlock the Rezound through an official method, where everything with with the Samsung locked bootloaders is a hacky workaround, all which they've no doubt closed in the Note 2 bootloader (if they're at all smart).
As for the size, I've held an original Note, and it's too freaking big. The Note 2 is even bigger. Samsung has a long history of crappy radios. The Fascinate, the Charge, the Nexus, etc. It's going to take time for me to trust them again on that front.
Also, put me in the minority, but I do not like OLED screens. They don't look subjectively better than the newest LCD's, and they have very questionable durability, particularly for someone like me who uses their phone as a navigation system, in car media player, and a desk clock. I log a lot of screen on time and in less than a year, my Charge had significant pixel fade that would simply not occur on an LCD.
I think I'll eventually get a Note-like phone. I like the larger screen real estate.
I'm picking up the note 2 unless something else blows my mind. I am kind of upset with htc's update speeds on stuff, but they still make super solid phones. I really like the phablet design so put me in that minority.

That made me laugh. Samsung is no better. They're no worse, but they're no better either. The reality is that the real holdup in getting updates to the phone is usually Verizon, and there's nothing any of the manufacturers can do about that. If it's not a flagship phone, VZW isn't going to be breaking a sweat getting an update out for it.
Locked boot loader is it for me. If I can't flash ROMs then it isn't worth it.
its up there for me. either the DIX/DLX or note 2. about the locked bootloader, i kinda like touchwiz DONT KILL ME. but the DIX/DLX with most likely be locked also. itll be like the dinc4g LTE.

No DLX though I'm getting the S3. IDK if the Note2 will have many devs. The only reason the GS3 got it is because everyone and their mother devs for it. They had a 4000$ bounty going. I need AOKP
Same with the DLX. I want the phone with the best specs, battery life, and dev support. Yeah, I'm a dev, but a lot of the time I don't even run my own roms.
I wont buy it because that screen is too damn big. Might as well buy a nexus 7..in which case I did lol

I just compared the width of Note 2 with my Rezound, it would be too wide for my taste.
I think 4.6"~4.8" screen with small bezel would be great for me.
Nope. It's just too damn big.
Was really hoping HTC would announce a reasonable upgrade from the Rezound at the big press event today. Instead we get Windows phones. No thanks.
And by the way..... REALLY, HTC? Windows phones?
I'm leaning towards that new LG phone as my next device..

Although I totally agree Verizon holds up the line on some of this stuff. I still think HTC likes to plays the hold an update to get people to want a new phone especially by doing the sense 3.6 thing. I'm not mad at them its all business I just want a phablet, who knows though if there are no devs I may have to hold out.

The best way to tell is go to an Verizon, AT&T, Sprint, Best Buy, etc. and try it out for yourself.
I have normal sized hands and when I first got it, it definitely felt on the large size, even coming from an S III but it only took me a couple of days to get used to it.
After a day or two you will not even think about how large your new phone is but how small and toy-like you old phone feels.

Will people look at you funny? Yes they will. In 6'3" 220lbs and people look at me funny. As others said though is probably best to give it a shot in store and see if you like it. My wife is 5'2" and tiny and after playing with my note now wants one

Yes people will look at you funny. But does it really matter when you have the best phone available right now? I would'nt trade mine for anything and i came from having a gs3 to the note 2.
Hi,
I came from a thunderbolt and so happy I decided on the note 2. I was thinking of the gs3 and let me tell you the screen size makes doing everything so much nicer. Plus no lag at all.
This is on stock I will make the jump to beans 7 once he releases it.
This is the way you can really see 4g in its full glory.
Thanks,
Bryan
You get used to the size of the note after a few days, its normal to me now and every other phoneni use feels too small lol
And when it comes to using it, I mainly use it with two hands. I don't text or use the phone while driving so I never need to use it with only one hand.

LOL, no kidding.
We bought a 60" rear projection Sony Wega about 9 years ago (I was in the TV/stereo business for years and still got everything wholesale at that time) and everybody who saw it was dumbfounded.
Now, it still looks pretty big but my Son and I where looking at a 90" Samsung at BestBuy recently and thinking ours looks kinda small........
My friends make fun of me by holding ridiculously sized rectangle objects (like books) to their ear and acting like they are on the phone Lol....however the ooohs and ahhhhs follow with the capabilities of this phone....its hard to gauge in the store especially if they have a security cord attached. Just grab one... There is a return policy if you dont like it...also stop worrying about what people think of you...I've been providing haters with job security since 1980... I'm an equal opportunity employer. Ha
