[Q]Screen Contrast Issues after rooting SGSII - Galaxy S II Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hey Guys,
I've rooted my SGSII. Once i got to the point of flashing the new firmware using Odin, upon rebooting my phone, i noticed the screen contrast is quite higher than it used to be (Blacks and greys look washed out, colours are too bright).
I rooted my phone using Odin and Superoneclick - As per instructions here - http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1056334
I'm using Android 2.3.3 and my Kernel version now shows as
2.6.35.7-I9100XWKDD-CL161513
[email protected] #2
I've got root now, which is excellent, but if for whatever reason, I can't resolve this screen contrast issue i'm happy to give it up.
Could someone please provide me with some detailed instructions on either:
a) How to fix the contrast issue inside of the phone settings (i've had a good look and i don't think there's anything i can change, I see no other display options aside from brightness)
b) A different method of flashing the firmware which won't result in this issue
c) Removing the root from my phone all together and returning to stock
For the record, i'm using an Australian version of the handset, which was purchased through Vodafone.
Tips?

Add the Power Widget to a screen. Select the right-hand icon. This moves the image from auto to bright to very bright to auto. See if this solves the problem.

Thanks for your response. I have tested this and this is not the case. It's definitely not related to the screen brightness, as the contrast is way too high on any brightness setting.

You have a very old ROM (KDD).
The link you gave for rooting has been superceeded (as mentioned at the very top of the first post) to * HERE *
I would download the Samsung KIES software (you can back up photos, videos, texts, contacts, etc) and also check and download the lastest firmware for your phone. Once that is done you can use the link above to reroot your phone.

Strangely enough, i took a backup using KIES previously and when i tried to restore it after reverting to factory defaults to try resolve the problem above, the backup failed to restore.

Check that the KIES program is the lastest version.
I rarely use KIES but it did backup my settings correctly.
You should use it to download the lastest ROM, that should solve your contrast problem.

I have the latest ROM, so no downloads are available through KIES, sadly.

Contrast issue solved. Cheers!

I have the same Problem Please Tell how to solve.

Hi there,
I have encountered a very similar issue with my device, as the rooted version of kernel that you flashed for your handset is exactly the same as mine. May I ask what was the final version of kernel you fired into? As I did not noted the string of the official version of kernel before rooting and therefore I am currently stuck on what version of modified kernel is best compatible with the handset.
I might as well list out the following information which might needed to find out the compatibility of a modified kernel:
Android version: 2.3.3
Baseband version: I9100XXKG1
Build number: GINGERBREAD.ZSKG2
Thanks

the exact same thing happened to me - after rooting and loading a custom rom the screen appeared very washed out and faded. mine was a white galaxy s 2, locked to o2. in the end, i loaded the original o2 firmware "GT-I9100_O2U_I9100XWKE2_I9100XXKDJ_I9100O2UKE1" and its counterpart kernel, and the screen went back to normal (how it was when i bought the phone).
i can't explain why it happened, or why it went so washed out in the first place. the official carrier roms and kernels are listed here (if your phone was locked to a particular network):
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1113928
and the official firmwares and kernels from samsung:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
let us know if you managed to solve your contrast issues, and which rom worked (if that was the solution).
EDIT: don't know if this is relevant, but this was the only o2 rom i found which had the o2 animated startup.

Problem Solved For Me
I had the contrast Issue after rooting my SGS II
PDA:I9100JPKH1
PHONE: I9100XXKG5
CSC:I9100JPKH1
now the problem solved after Flashing the XWKDD Stock Kernel from this thread
After doing that i noticed some issues with the Gyroscope, so i went back again and flash the the zimage file which i extract from the stock firmware and rename the file to zimage.tar and flash with odin
NOW EVERY THING IS FINE !

How is the issue solved? Please give the steps if possible. I'm having this same problem on my SGSII... the colors are washed out (even though bright), and I can't believe this is the best the screen can do...

Guys,
I've just rooted and I'm in the same situations as other of you.
My screen is washed out and way too bright..
How did you guys solved the problem?
Thanks

Anybody with an answer?

You can flash back the old version with odin

Is this right?

Hi, I got my galaxy s2 in the post a week ago, but it was second hand, apparently unwanted upgrade. Anyway, is this an official kernal please, as I haven't seen it on any other device on YouTube when watching a meriad of reviews. So I have attached a screen shot of the kernal version. By the way this should be a sim free UK modal. I know this is random, but I have stupidly got my self a bit worried, could someone help me please? Thanks very much

It looks like they've possibly upped the kernel, but definitely rooted it. I very seriously doubt there's anything to worry about though. Looks like someone did the work for you
Nothing wrong there, you're rooted. If you're worried you could flash a different kernel! Easy as pie if you follow the threads available
Hi, but root checker says that I don't have root same with set cpu. Also, can i update it ota, to the new 2.3.4 when it comes out officially please? Also, I rooted my old htc desire, and then I wanted to root my galaxy s2 when ever here was a stableish nightly for ice cream sandwich, but will the fact it hasn't got an official kernel obscure me from flashing using odin to flash roms, other kenels and installing custom recovery, or because it says it isn't rooted, will it obscure be from rooting. Also are there any risks please? I am new to galaxy s2, I am used to the simplify of rooting the desire. thanks, also how do you know it's rooted?
Thanks very much for your help

Also, could you please be able to tell be, where in the procedure of rooting is my phone to be able to root, flash if someone has started the work for me please? I am just scared that if I start to mess around with trying to root it, and if someone has started the rooting the process, I might brick it. I don't know if I have explained this very well.
I should have done this before, but when it is so long I didn't think it would work, but I typed in the kernel in the search box and it came up with this, I think it may be stock and completely normal after all: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=14593753
I got mine from Orange and the kernel was KE2. I think that KE7 is an official firmware, but the "root" in the name suggests it's already been rooted. Have a look in your apps for CWM or Superuser. If they're there then it's probably Chainfire's root that has been applied. If not then maybe they just flashed a stock kernel before sending it to you.
Either way, following the instructions in Chainfire's root thread will not brick your device (as long as you do follow the instructions )
It's actually quite hard to brick it. You really need to start pulling cables or stopping odin when you're flashing to do that.

my brand new phone from vodafone australia was kernel dukf4 with [email protected] in the title, but it was most certainly not a rooted device.
I am now on ke7, rooted, no dramas. dont have cwm or rom, phone does not seem to need it for my lifestyle.

[Q] Screwed up brand new SGS2 and a bit puzzled now

Hi all,
My gf got a new SGS2. It was branded with Play Poland and it was running v2.3.3 of Android.
I thought I would flash it to CM9 ICS nightly like mine (it was bought in France can't remember if it was branded or not).
I first flash the CM9 resurrection and then flash the same nightly as on my phone (20120524). But on her phone I had strange problems like wifi would connect but not get access to the internet (my SGS2 was fine on the same network), very low GSM signal etc. I thought it could be a modem issue so I flashed to LPS but nothing changed.
I eventually reflashed but with DarkyROM resurrection based on GGB KL1. In the installation infos thread (which I cannot link to because I dont have 8 posts), it said to use the .pit and the PDA, which I did.
Since then it is stuck on the black and white GT-i9100 screen with a yellow /!\ and won't boot into GGB anymore. I can get into download but not into recovery. Custom binary in download shows 2.
I don't want to aggravate the problem anymore and I don't know what to do now... I hate myself so much for not backing up the original ROM. I thought I wouldn't need to because there was no personal data on the phone. And now I don't know where to get a copy of the original branded image for the whole phone to bring it back to life.
Please advise.
It was bought in France and you didnt even check to make sure it was the I9100 international.
Take the back cover off, remove the battery and check the info.
Please please dont flash one custom rom on top of another custom rom when things are obviously going wrong.
Check out this thread and read a few more while your at it please.

Should be ok
Download the stock firmware (there is a thread on this site for it) and flash using Odin on your PC. There are plenty of guides around for it. If you can get into download mode this should work.

My french SGS2 is fine, it's the Polish SGS2 that's having trouble.
There are no warnings regarding local versions and I assumed that a GT-I9100 was like any other one; one difference would be in the software hence my mistake. I was obviously wrong.
I thought that maybe the CSC didn't match (I didn't check before as I assumed all localisation was software) but couldn't do anything about it.
info sticker says (on both phones)
Model GT-I9100

I looked everywhere I could and didn't find the branded gingerbread 2.3.3 Play Poland firmware… Any suggestions?
---------- Post added at 12:56 AM ---------- Previous post was at 12:35 AM ----------
Looking back, I think the stupidest things was to go from branded gingerbread to custom ice cream sandwich and back to custom gingerbread (with .pit) because apparently you cannot go back and forth between GGB and ICS
I go back and forth between gb and ics all the time, no probz.. I never touch odin thou

@OP what comes to my mind is that you corrupted your efs folder content. That will require you sending your phone in.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using xda premium
I have had similar issue and told samsung it happend while i was updating. They emailed me a postage, had my phone back 2 weeks. But seems like it should not be a tough fix. I also go between gb and ics frequently and have no prob.
efs corruption sucks
I can't send it in, it has the yellow /!\ on boot and hangs on it...
If I flash a stock kernel, the /!\ will disappear and I can send it in maybe?
Hi,
There are several official firmware packages listed on this thread for Poland: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1075278
I did a quick scan, and found XXKE4, XXKF2, XXKG2, but it's a huge thread, so there are probably lots more.
The thread also has a good guide for flashing/rebuilding using ODIN.
Hope that helps.
Hmmm so with the help of a friend we managed to put it back on stock ICS XXLPB.
But I still have this weird radio bug. I have two phones sitting next to each other, on the same network.
The weird SGS2 has 1 bar and the other phone has full bars. Same goes for wifi, both SGS2 on the same network within 10 cm of each other.
They both get full reception but the weird SGS2 cannot access the internet or any other device on the network.
Although it has a correct IP and I can see it connected on the router.
I am at a complete loss.
You don't have to flash Poland firmware specifically. You can flash any stock firmware via Odin, choose the latest non-Frankenstein version. If you can get your phone into download mode, which you should be able to.
Sent from my GT-I9100 using Tapatalk 2
Wrong config in router caused the wifi mess. No idea why only the Polish SGS2 was affected.
All seems well now, its running CM9 nightly like mine and I'm proceeding to configuring it.
Thanks all for your help

Have you considered there might be something wrong with the hardware? If flashing a new roms doesn't help, it only makes sense the problem is with the camera. an educated guess by what you described is a damaged cmos sensor or a something dirty on the lens.try cleaning the lense and if this doesn't help, i'd pay a lab to get it fixed unless your wife doesn't use the camera often.

[Q] Bought an used phone and don´t know what root.

Hi guys I am kind of new to this forum and really like all the website with so much information !
I am turning to you because because my friend wanted to buy an SGS 2 and bought one from some random guy whom he has no contact with.
The problem is now that the phone seems to be rooted because there is an yellow triangle that follows in the start up. I wonder if anyone knows how to see what kind of room is installed on the phone? I ask this because because the phone has been unlocked with the simunlock app but
the network connection is so bad, I´ve managed to make 1-2 calls to see that the phone works but i get max 1/5 bars in the connection barometer.
This made me think that maybe the root is bad performed by the guy that did flash the device from the begining.
If you guys have any kind of tweaks or ideas what to do I would really appreciate it.
I gathered some information that might help. This is taken from t he status menu in the galaxy S2.
Would it maybe help to restore everything to stock?

Sorry I choose the wrong section for my thread. Thanks to the MOD that moved it to the right one.
Root has no impact on signal strength.
But if you want to revert to stock, just download original firmware from http://sammobile.com/firmware, unpack and flash via Odin in PDA.

The ROM you use has no effect on your signal strength. The modem however, does. So you can try flashing a new modem if you're fine with the ROM besides the signal problems. ie.the UI, features offered, etc. Else you can flash your stock firmware for your region and that would solve your problem

Thanks a lot for the answers ! I´ve already tried to switch to gsm mode, dosn´t get any better. I will try to flash to a different modem but I have a few questions. Does it matter wich modem is current on my phone before i flash to another?
And if someone could point me in the right direction about wich modem I should use for my region, I live in sweden and use a swedish sim card and operator.

No.
For Sweden I think it will be I9100XXLQ6.
If you got the phone from a totally unknown person, i would suggest to revert it back to complete stock, and then start making all the changes you want from scratch, just to be 100% safe.
I agree i´ll flash everything back to stock and start from the begining, I think it´s the best way. But 19100XXLQ6 is the modem that my phone says I have, does that mean that I´am on stock baseband?`Otherwise if someone could show me a link or something for a step to step guide of how to restore everything back to stock.
Thanks a lot for your help guys !
Look backup your efs folder before you start pissi g about with stuff.
Then go to that link and get a 4.0.3 stock firmware for your region.
Then come back here and you can be advised about like siyah kernel/nand backups/roms.

Hi,
A couple of months back I rooted my Samsung Galaxy S2 using Odin 1.85. My phone is a UK I19100, on Three. Today, I wanted to unroot it, so being a fool, I followed the guide at galaxys2root. com
I have downloaded firmware for a different carrier, and when starting my phone, I have error messages such as 'android.process.acore has stopped working' and I find that the 3 store has disappeared. Also, the phone no longer works, being extremely slow and unresponsive.
Please could someone guide me on how to get back to the latest official Three UK stock kernel and firmware for the SGS2.
Thanks guys, much appreciated, really stuck here.

You don't have to flash stock firmware to unroot your phone...
You can flash any country's firmware you want, as long as it's for your device. So I suggest flashing the latest I9100XWLPX firmware.

Thanks for the link and your quick reply. Will this work for a UK Three SGS2? I don't want to install something that will mess it up
I installed this firmware: I9100XXLPQ_I9100OXALPQ_I9100XXLPQ_HOME.tar.md5 before, and it ruined the phone, the three store had gone, the phone unresponsive, whenever touching an icon it crashes and needs reboot etc.
Also, will this firmware put it back to original factory software, ie. stock everything ICS and unroot?
Sorry, kinda a newbie at this.
