Hi all,
I've used root explorer to clear out a few useless apps on my Orange Atrix, and I've accidentally deleted something. Not sure what, but it's caused my ringtone/notifications to set to something default and if I try to select a new sound, the list is empty.
Any idea what I've deleted and if there's anyway I can get it back?
Thanks
maybe a folder or app where you got your tones from? if the file isnt there your phone plays the default tone.
Nah, I was just deleting APKs from /system/app
Anyone else got any idea what I might have accidentally deleted?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can offer help with this. I've had my Atrix since launch and there's been about 4 times now (all seemingly after i've hooked the phone to computer with either phone portal, windows sync, or mass storage) where the assigned ringtones for contacts and even my regular ringtone has been changed or reassigned to some random song from my library. I don't know if there's something to hooking it up and it messes with the memory that juggles the ringtones/songs or what. Does anyone else have this problem and if so, has it been addressed/fixed? Thanks in advance for any help offered.
I have the exact same issue and have been posting about it on the Motorola forum as well. Over there the Motorola folks ask you questions and try to get a fix out to everyone, so please check it out if you haven't already.
My issue has happened a lot morethan yours it seems, however, I use extra batteries, so the phone reboots more often.
This is what I posted over there a little while ago:
Internal phone storage keeps disappearing
The "Disappearing ringtones" discussion was closed and merged with this one, but my issue is not the same as the internal memory being wiped.
My files are still on the card and internal memory, but the contacts, alarms, messaging, calendar, etc apps can't remember the tones I set.
I have copied the files to the following locations with the same issue recurring:
/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/system/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard-ext/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
/sdcard-ext/media/audio/(alarms, notifications and ringtones)
Even after moving them with RootExporer to the "non-mountable" storage (/system) they are still reassigning and setting to "unknown".
Possibly related issue. The playlists I create with MixZing, winAmp, and astro are empty are the phone reboots.
Occasionally I get the "no files" error when I check the mounted card in file manager, but if I manualy unmount and remount the card, they are still there.
I keep missing calls, texts and having my alarms "silent". This is getting frustrating. I bought the Atrix on launch day so I need to exchange NOW if that is what is needed.
Other than the above and the losing data connection issue, I LOVE THIS PHONE
Yeah, i've placed my ringtones (all .m4a format) on both the internal/external memory slots and for some reason, when it gets hooked up i'm in the same boat you are...very frustrating i've missed calls and messages as well. surprising that no one from Moto has a resolution for it...
I've run into the same problem, and was planning on moving 'em into the /system/media folder...but it sounds like that won't fix it. Drats.
I've had this issue as well. The random song problem seems to only affect contacts I have set up with a custom tone. No telling what song/sound will play for which contact. Otherwise it has simply changed my default ringtone to a particular mp3 that then becomes the default tone. Really weird.
I do still have the issue with the files in the /system folder, but much less. So I would try them there to lessen the problem. Westill need a complete fix though.
This issue is still a problem. There are even some apps that can't see the files on the internal card or external card. Even after the OTA update this problem is driving me crazy.
I think you dont hear about this issue more because some people dont connect there phone to the computer or remove the battery often. It seems to be a problem with reading the info off the card when it is remounted. On my captivate when I remounted the card it would always scan the card. This phone doesn't.
Any ideas.
Yeah I had this problem too. Was the only thing, and I mean the only thing I didn't like about this phone. I found the only way to fix it is to root the phone and move your personal ringtones to the '/system/media/audio/ringtones' folder using Root Explorer (you can buy it oin the market. Great app BTW). This solved all my problems. I know it's not "right" but it works great. Now I have zero problems with this phone.

In Root Explorer, at the top, hit the R/W button.
Ive mounted to the computer often, resboot every day, pull battery every now and then.. I dont have this problem. Ever try Ringdroid?
I have been having problems deleting a file on my Prime. When I bought it, it had the book "Alice in Wonderland" on it for free.. I do not reed books, so I deleted it. But then, suddenly, it was back on the library. I tried deleting it from file explorer, but same thing. I tried deleting the boog-image from gallery, but same thing. Back within in a little while.. Does anyone know how to disable the book-library, or to delete the file?
Thanks..
Edit: The book is called "Adventures in Wonderland", not Alice
Hello fellow SGS2 user,
Normally, after installing another custom ROM, I adjust the ringtone, alarm sound and also whatsapp and sms notifications. I tend to use the same sounds all the time, and do not require all other beautiful sounds that my device contains.
Today I decided to see if I could delete the sounds that I never use.
I installed Android Commander on my PC and accessed the root of my phone.
I went to the root:system\media\audio folder and deleted all sounds that I don't need.
Afterwards I rebooted the phone and went to Settings -> Sound and tried to see what sounds would pop up when I clicked on "Phone ringtone".
Guess what: the names of all ringtones were still there! And they all seemed to still function.
With a file manager I went to the folder mentioned above, but only the sounds that I left behind were there, and the previously deleted ones were still deleted.
My question: is there another location on my phone where sounds are stored? And is there any way to make the sound list (when wanting to chose another ringtone, or alarm sound, or whatsapp sound) as short as I want it to be?
Thanks in advance!

why do you want to delete those ringtones in the first place? Is it to free up more space?
Swyped from my Galaxy SII
No not really, though it helps. I just wanted to see if it is possible.
Sounds can be stored on internal sdcard. And no, you can't make sound lists.
Hello All,
I havnt been on here in a long time, but something is bugging me.
On the internet bookmarks there are folders labled as the gmail addresses that i have set up on the phone.
Nothing is saved in them and I want to get rid of the folders.
Isit possible??
Phone is standerd, not rooted.
Thanks in advance!!
Let 'em be, empty folders don't hurt anyone. Have you tried deleting them? Just do it, won't hurt your device (my non developer opinion).
Hello, I just hate them being there, I know it wont do any harm in removing them but i just cannot figure out how to remove them, long press does nothing
You need to be rooted for that.
Now, what are you doing checking your device's folders anyway?, no wonder it's bugging you.
don't be folder hatin' now
The folders are in my internet bookmarks at the top which i find gets in my way
Rename them to "I don't mind this folder being here 1" & "I don't mind this folder being here 2".

So I am kinda sick of this deal where I reboot the phone for whichever reason and all the ringtones and notifications go back to default. I have some of these in my sd card at the media/audio then a notification ringtone and alarm folder. After some researching they seems the problem is having those in the external card and the card might be mounting too late. So the fix is to move them to the /system/media/audio folder in their appropriate folder. I did taht and after the reboot the files moved to the /system/media/audio folder and were rename with the prefix that described them. for example, if I had a rigtone named "dust in the wind.mp3" now it is named. "ringtone_dust in the wind.mp3". This phone is rooted and I used ES file explorer to move them...
So the question is:
Is that the correct folder?
Why the moved out of their folders and why the rename?
What do I need to do next?

Seems that in ES File Explorer the "Move To" and the "CUT" are not the same thing... I deleted all the files I moved and this time used the Cut instead of Move to and used Copy instead of Copy to (for those ringtones that were part of an music album) and it all stored correctly and stayed in place after multiple reboots. However... The phone and system went back to defaults one more time...
Am I the only one having this problem?
Quick update. During the research I have done they mention profile apps. my profile management app was changing my ringtones back to default. I made a few changes and will come back if it is not the fix but I'm confident it is. Sorry about the monologue but maybe this migth help someone. In short for the specific contact ringtones the problem was solved when I moved the files to the /system/media/audio folder (root required) and the profile app was changing the phone and system main ringtones. If you don't have root it seems that for some users just moving the ringtones from the external card to the phone folders has been enough.
Those files are so small. Why bother moving them to the sd card? You really shouldn't move system stuff to gain a few kb's of space you can't use anyway. Whatever space you empty doesn't become available to you anyway.
I didn't move any system files to the sd card. Those ringtones were there since my blackberry times.
Ringtone/Notification resetting all the time
I have been having this issue for a long time. I have a rooted i717 and factory ICS upgrade. I don't tweak out my phone with roms and things like that. Only customization I do outside the phone customizing is using Tasker for a handful of things.
I thought my ringtone/notifications were resetting after I rebooted...and after testing it wasn't the case. I thought that after I charged my phone the items would reset...not the case after a few tests.
I also found all my sounds would have multiple instances when I try to choose a ringtone or notification. Always the first instance would not play a sound and then the second instance would play the sound.
Even my photos and vids would have multiple instances.
What I found to be the case...These ringtones/notifications reset whenever I let my battery run totally dead so the phone shuts itself off. I plug it in to recharge and find the reset happens. To try a fix I have been plugging my phone in to recharge before the battery hits 0% and the resets have not happened since. The duplication of sounds and images haven't happened since either.
Just my observation...give that a try if you are still having problems.
What I'm bugged about is why isn't there a simple config file that holds all this info and won't forget if the battery goes to 0%?!
I have 2 batteries, I drain one all the way until swapping usually, I have badger had any sound reset itself.
Not sure if you guys read all the replies but the issue was solved. It was a profile aftermarket app changing the tones back.
Thanks!
