[DEV WIP] Increase Speaker Volume with SRS config files. - HTC EVO 3D

This is almost like the ASUS Transformer..
I've begun looking at the files in /system/etc/soundimage in an attempt to increase the poor speaker volume and they look to be pretty interesting to say the least
Take a look at this file: (open with notepad++)
srsfx_trumedia_51
and this photo:

And..............

SRS is effectively just DSP with unity gain. It will not change the line level voltage out from the stereo plug.
With unity gain comes distortion. It's like using a parametric EQ and yanking up all the dials and saying it's louder.. It's boosting certain frequencies giving priority to them over another reshaping the sound, not really increasing volume.
Just my 2 cents.

Maybe so, but it was a good increase (distortion or not) on the ASUS TF, and it was the only way to deal with the terrible speakers.

Sorry to crash your thread, but while you're looking for ways to increase the speaker volume, could you PLEASE look for a way to increase the mic gain? People have been telling me I sound muffled. I'm on my second Evo 3D, but I'm still muffled. Is there a way to up the mic gain in SRS? Thanks.

Quite possibly, I'm going to look into this as soon as I finish up the mods for my ROM

freeza is on to something here its just like using dsp or volume +. I say its worth a shot! please keep this thread rolling

Just increase the input/output gains for the device block you want. It isn't hard. 1.5 to 2.0 on device block one for output gain yields decent results. Play around with it.

Bump...Freeza?

i tried increasing the volume through QPST but couldn't get that to work, so this would be a great option for me.

Working on this tonight

Modded Sennheiser CX200

Fitted the ear buds from my 2 day old CX200,s onto the stock HTC mic/earphones cable.
It was very easy to do and a great improvement over the standard phones.
I could never get the standard phones to stay in my ear properly and were very uncomfortable (small ears I guess).
Anyway here is the pic,s , let them do the talking

Great job! I was just going about to do this but at the plug end. I was going to connect the extUSB plug to my current headphones, but this is a lot better.
I will never doubt the reasons for the hacks people do...some just do it for the hell of it and I am all for that.
But....I have to ask: Why?
3n1 adapter...and no re-wireing.
But excellently cool that you did it...although it is not really clear what you did. Did you take the tiny ear speakers and put them in the stock headphone cases or...?

I have the 3in1 adapter, but I think it is to bulky when travelling on the train and I can not use the stock speakers as they keep falling out of my ear and they are uncomfortable for me.
What I have done, is remove the stock speakers from the stock cable and then fitted Sennheiser cx200(these are the in-ear type) speaker to the stock cable.
So now I have the best of both worlds, stock cable with mic, dont have to use bulky 3in1 adapter when out n about and better fit/sound quality for my ears.
did you get improved audio quality as well? or was it bottlenecked by the HTC wireing?

Well I am not sure about the wiring, I was talking about CX200 ear-buds sounding much better on the stock HTC cable, than the stock HTC earphones on the stock HTC cable.
I could hardly hear any low end sounds with the stock HTC earphones.
To me both cables sound very similar, maybe the HTC cable possibly not being just as loud, could be the in-line volume control or volume not being set right when being encoded to mp3.
The CX200 sound ok for budget range and my ears would not be the best for judging sound quality(years of extremely loud music - raves 1989 - 1995) and a bit of tinnitus.
Aha. Cool idea.
I have the same problem...small ears and the earphones are for some giant head.
I use some over ear buds with the 3in1 adapter.
Getting the bluetooth "dogtag" adapter in the mail shortly.

Speaker?

Is my EVO 3d faulty or is this just the way the speaker sounds? It's not very loud and has a tinny tone to it when watching videos or certain ring tones.

I was just thinking how loud my speaker sounds....
sent in 3D
its no where near where the OG Evo was in terms on loudness..I can look passed it but damn its crazy low from what im use to
Coming from the Epic 4G, it's barely audible - the Epic had a monstrous speaker unrivaled by any other phone I've owned.
are they all like this? I typically put Pandora on when I take a shower and now I can barely even tell my phone is playing music, much less actually hear/enjoy it...
PC speakers always do the job for me, but yea I did notice the speaker isn't as loud as the OG EVo.
The speaker in my phone is horrible ... I shouldn't need external speakers to listen to my music.

quiet speaker, look at the speaker holes in the red rim of the camera...if someone mods it or comes up with a new back cover, it would probably be louder
I think the speakers just aren't that powerful. They're clearer than the old Evo, but probably only go up to around 75% as loud.
yeah this was a day 1 issue for me..Got Equalizer from the Market and all is good now..Still not a good as the evo4g but better to deal with than stock.
I was with some friends on the fourth of July and trying to entertain us with my new fancy device by playing music and it was so low or was ridiculous. I have found a remedy through. At staples is an external speaker for phones that is only 6.99. It is pretty small enough to be portable and decently loud.as long as this is with me that problem is Now eliminated.lol
It's not the speaker grill... You can take the cover off and it sucks exactly the same...

yep..grill has nothing to do with it..Its just a small speaker..Very tinny sound to it too.Im getting use to it though.Only time i get mad is when my wife is near me with her OGEvo and it rings or if shes on a voice call on speaker phone.
The Evo 4G speaker was just perfect, deep and loud.I remember playing music quite loud on the 4G..Oh well,im over it kinda

[Q] Beats enhancement vs. SRS sound and stock htc equalizers?

okay just an observation... and maybe an opinion, but today i got some senheisser HD 280 pro headphones and i was listening to music with the "beats" enhancement on, and i noticed it was very tinny with little to no bass while listening to derezzed by daft punk. I know what the song sounds like on my computer and with earphones, but it sounded much worse with the headphones.
so this lead me to the conclusion that either it was the headphones or the music player, the 3vo. to test, i plugged my headphones into my friends blackberry and i noticed it sounded exactly the same. so then i decided to change to the regular enhancer to without the beats mod, and i noticed pretty much little to no difference, and the song had little to no low/bass end sounds.
that's when i thought either the beats enhancement is either only for beats headphones or just not working with my senheissers. my friend was pretty much laughing at this and was convinced HTC's music player sucked.
after my friend left, i decided i would try something; i switched out the HtcMusic.apk and the HtcMusicEnhancer.apk for the stock ones (found in virtuous rom) that come with the preset equalizers and the SRS enhancer and immediately noticed a huge difference, the bass was actually there and it was more of a studio sound than the "beats" enhancement. as well the preset equalizers also gave more depth in the bass and low ends when set to jazz or blues, etc.
Now i am NOT saying that the beats enhancement doesn't work, i just think that the SRS and regular eq's are much more effective. maybe this is because i am not using the beats headphones or ear phones?
maybe I am doing something wrong?
is anyone else finding they are having this experience?
any feedback is welcome.
PS. personally i don't like Beats audio... i think its a bit gimmicky and just a way to advertise just because its Dr Dre, because beats vs bose, for the price range, you're better off going with the AE2's or the sound cancelling headphones for 169 and 349, respectively.
Beats is definitely a gimmick. So are Bose. I am listening to a pair of QC-2 right now, and they are average at best... the noise cancelling is not that great either. Luckily they were a company gift, otherwise I'd be pissed off.
Honestly associating with Beats by Dre just makes me want to look elsewhere. IF this somehow gets HTC to put speakers that don't SUCK in these phones, and headphone amplifiers that are halfway decent, then I'll be happy. I will definitely remove all sound enhancements though. When will people learn that this SRS-like stuff just butchers the audio? I want the pure sound... I leave my EQ flat so I can get a true studio response in most environments. In the car and living room I use auto EQ/TA but the user EQs are always flat.
I don't use the stock music app but use cloudskipper instead because of its great equalizer.
Beats is just bell curved.
Here is a screenshot of what sounds great for me right now. Change it to your preferences.

HTC Beats implementation more complex then you think

So recognized developer Chad Goodman, took a look at the Beats codebase back on Feb 18th, and had this to say over at Infectedrom... SOURCE

There is two parts to the Beats equation, Kernel/Driver support, and Rom software support. If you are using a HTC Sense rom with Beats enabled, with the stock Evo 3D kernel, your only getting one part of the benefits. Chad has added the Drivers for Beats (the best drivers are from the Rezound) into the Kernel, so that if you are running one of his kernels AND a rom that supports Beats, you are going to experience the full effect. Chad has also been able to push almost ALL of the audio through the Beats system so that every app takes advantage of it in the newer kernels.

i just expanded on what was there, and filtered all audio thru it

i also disabled any and all audio processing in the DAC (digital to analog converter)
-i feel the DAC should have 1 job, and only 1 job - conert audio from digital to analog... no post-processing of audio, adjusting levels, etc
-all sound and audio processing should be done in the sound chipset - this leaves the CPU alone to perform other tasks
while not 100%, im pretty close to having ALL audio processing done in the sound chipset, removing most of it from the cpu
roms without beats, such as MIUI have noticed a huge improvement in audio quality when comparing audio in my kernel to the tiamat kernel that comes with the rom...

The reason I am posting this is because I am tired of people reading about the over hyped Beats Headphone business and applying it to HTC's Beats implementation. They spent 350 million dollars for a 51% stake in Beats for more then marketing. I personally own two pairs of Beats, Solo HD and Tours, as well as some Sennheisers, and like each pair for a different reason. Talk all the crap on the headphones you want, but with full Beats integration and Beats Solo HD's or Beats Studios (i think they are called), Techno, dubstep, hip-rop, rap, pop, house music fans, and other bass heavy music fans will enjoy the extreme low-frequency performance, (better then my sennheisers that everyone bragged and boasted about and convinced me to buy)

Beats makes a big difference to me. I'm using Turtle Beaches most of the time and they sound good.
Beats user/owner here I noticed a significant difference in roms and Chads kernel. Everything sounds real good, clear and deep bass. Never a dubstep fan until now

I am running Z3RD 1.5 with anthrax # 6 on my shooter, and i can confirm that the sound is amazing to say the least. Sounds atleast 10 times better than beats with stock kernel.

[Q] XZU Speaker

Hello.
Does the speaker so bad and weak like they say in all reviews?
Can someone maybe could upload a youtube video of the speaker playing some music?
Thank you!
Google 'mobilegeeks YouTube'.
Nicole and Sacha have done some great comparison videos
It is by far the weakest aspect of the phone.
Let's just say if you had this phone in your pocket and you werent in a very quite place, you will NOT hear it ring.
I was at a mall with average number of crowd, nothing too loud, typical mall noise and I completely missed the ring and only noticed via the vibration.
Bluetooth earphone is a must or like me, don't use it as your daily driver phone and more of a tablet/media consumption device.
Speaker low? I own this phone and speakers are louder than my HTC Sensation XE, Nexus 7 and Asus transformer prime. Was really surprise by it at first use as people said it was poor. Or maybe it is poor for people who like to hear music in public place?

According to GSM Arena's test, the Ultra's speaker can be compared to the Lumia 920 and iPhone 5's speaker. Check under "Ringing phone, dB".

Wondering about the same thing - the speaker volume is noticeably lower than what I was used to on my previous Note 2. Hope i a.m not stuck with a defective unit! I too have missed a few calls simply because i could not hear the ring.
Btw, the Note 2 had custom ROMs which allowed you to boost the speaker volume (medium boost or high). Would be great if we could install a patch that did the same on the XZU
This phone only has one mono speaker and as it's waterproof, it's behind a skin to keep the water out, so yes, it is lower than stuff like the note 2. Every single review I read and saw warned of this.
Sent from my GT-N7000 using XDA Premium 4 mobile app
Yeah, it's technically a loud speaker. But it's just poorly placed, recessed, and water proofed. For hearing the ring tone, it's fine. But listening to music or playing videos, it's definitely one of the big negatives for me.
In fact, if I don't place my hand around the speaker to reflect sound, it would almost be unusable in certain situations. Which is unfortunate given its large video friendly screen.
Bottom line, either don't have high expectations for the speaker and/or go the external speaker route.

Have you tried phonecalls WHILE bathing? You'll think the mediocre volume when the speaker is dry is a godsend :screwy:
