Brings Android 2.3.4, breaks any root exploits out there, new availability to unlock bootloader (although one person who tried having problems trying to flash custom recovery with unlock, also unlock doesn't give S-OFF), new radio, new pri, and a whole lot more. I suggest not taking the OTA and doing the revolutionary.io S-OFF method and then flashing one of the new 2.3.4 rooted ROMs in the Development section.
It has the updated version of Swype, which was the reason I upgraded.

<Warning> People on Evo 3D getting the new OTA: do not update yet, unless you've already ran Revolutionary to S-OFF.
Yezzir, just saw that
(I am Un-Rooted, But I want to root today!) Am I reading this correctly? do NOT update with the OTA (8/18/2011) update, UNLESS I am already rooted?
So if I root today is it safe to update with that OTA update that came out today *8/18/2011?
I think the update does patch the current root method.
Plus for piece of mind don't ever accept OTA updates from sprint or HTC if you like your root and s-off.
I don't know why some people insist on running a update knowing in the back of their mind they'll possibly/probably loose root, and who knows for how long. Just wait a day or two for the devs to implement it in their ROMs.
You can still take the update because HTC just released the bootloader unlocked method for the HTC EVO 3d.

HTC unlocker = clusterfuck
Revolution = the correct way.
yea not understanding htc way ... unlocked bootloader but you still have s-on ?
Nobody even knows how HTC's unlock even works. There are Sensation users with S-Off and they used HTC's method. Unfortunately, there's about 10 posts like those above to 1 post of actual information about it.
Its looks like its a partial unlock.
I'm sticking with revolutionary, I have root, everything is working awesome, n I didn't lose my warranty
So your saying since I have s-off with revolutionary, I can take the update and still have s-off? Also will this update break root?

If you take the ota through system updates and if you have a custom ROM and recovery it will not allow you to update. It will give you an error message. If you decide to lose the custom recovery and go forward with the ota it will lock your phone with S-on and you will have no way going back to 2.3.3. You will be stuck with lastest ota 2.3.4 with S-on and no root. Then if you decide after that you can't get back to 2.3.3 and think since you can't go back might as well go forward with HTC's bootloader unlock method. It will unlock the bootloader but you still will have S-on and noway of flashing a custom recovery which means no root. If your dying for this update check out the dev section and I believe you can update the prl, kernel, firmware mins the hboot. Check it out. If it was me I would wait for revolutionary or a team that knows what they are doing to release an rooted ota.

If you unlock and root your phone you will probably have ICS available to you before HTC releases an OTA via a custom rom.

the dev's here will probably have a leaked release (with any changes to the UI), make it 10x better then the projected ota and post it here, you'd d/l it and flash it onto your rooted phone.

This is correct. 90% of the time, devs have a stable leaked release before the OEM actually releases it.

Ok so a system update is a no no but if it says application update then I can do it. Nice to know. When I checked mine it just hung on the checking dialogue. It would never tell me whether a update was available or not. Any idea what causes that?

The thing to actually look out for is an hboot update. Those could be ugly.
Some roms disable OTA updating, so it might be your Rom.

This is really funny.
I didn't realize there were a billion senseless threads in the general forum about this update. Ive gotta revert to a stock rom to see if I can get the update; I don't have any of the files needed to update on my phone.
i cant seem to get my phone to recognize an update available. weird, cause it always does detect them.

I thought about doing that, but did you have to register with HTC? I'd like to avoid doing that.
Just go to HTC dev and unlock. That's what his tool uses anyway. You aren't getting around that till a new s-off is developed.
Right, but his tool does not register your phone in particular with HTC. It's anonymous.

That is not true, it pulls the device Id from the phone, that is the only way it gets unlock bin...
