I'm rooted with S-off yet can't uninstall Sprint Zone. Even when I try it using Install Manager it gives me an error to make sure that I'm rooted with S-off. When I boot into recovery it tells me I do have S-off. Any ideas on how I can get this trash off my phone?
Did you try titanium backup? Honestly though, even custom roms still have it because it is required for the *2 to call sprint and other call codes to work.

You need to keep it without it you will not be able to call *2 now if you don't need to call customer service then by all means go ahead and delete it.

You can always dial 611. Root Explorer works flawlessly, just make sure it is RW first. Hope that helps
Leave it alone, you will need it. Otherwise we will see a post from you in a couple of days asking for the sprint zone apk so you can re install it.

Having S-off or being rooted doesn't change the ability to click the uninstall in application manager on the phone. Once you are rooted, using an app like root explorer will let you navigate into the system/app folder and remount it as read-write so that you can delete it. This applies to all the apps that you want to get rid of. For instance, I cleaned out nascar, the sprint tv, blockbuster, amazonmp3, and a few others. Keep in mind that some apps will take away functionality, such as the inability to dial *2 after removing Sprint Zone. Some people like to remove the extra HTC widgets, but there are a lot of those that link together through sense so removing them will create dead links between the different apps. Of course, there are some apps that you should NEVER remove. I haven't checked if there is a good list of *safe* removal apps for the 3D yet, but regardless you should make a nandroid backupin case you decide to remove stuff so that if you break your phone you can flash back without too much worry.

I rooted my Eris using the one click root apk. Now I can't get super user to work. I may be going about this the wrong way, (went from bb to eris and never rooted till today) I'm trying to uninstall the junk apps verizon foists on you. I.E. Amazon, Visual vm, and so on. How do I do this?
Did some poking around. Apparently S-on is what I need to disable? Enable flash or NAND access? Is this right, and if so, how do I do this?
Having S-On shouldn't matter. If you're looking to have access to NAND, you should already have access to it if you're rooted. There is a walk through for getting to S-Off (or engineering mode) if you want to go through it however.

All I want is to remove the stock apps like visual voice mail, amazon and twitter. I ran out of space on my phone this morning and I want to free up some space and look into running applications off the SD card instead of the phone memory.
Okay. All you should need is an app explorer. Then find the file folder the apps are in. SYSTEM->Apps. Then change the folder to rewritable (should be an option towards the top) and delete the apps you want and the files that go along with them. You may have to reboot for the effects to occur. If that doesn't work there is also a walk through to remove them through ADB. Just search for it in the forums. It's quite popularly visited I believe.

Unfortunately, I was one of the few that got left behind when VZW pulled the update. I really want to update, even with the VM bug and everything. I came across this guide on how to manually upgrade to GB but I noticed it said it completely wipes my phone. Now I know Backup Assistant saves my contacts, my music is on my SD card so I'm not too worried about that. I'm afraid I might lose app data suchas all the hours and HOURS I put into Angry Birds Rio to get 3 stars on every level. Can anyone help me find a way to fully save all of my app data before I manually upgrade? BTW I've never rooted and I'm on stock Froyo
Do you plan on rooting? If so use the Revolutionary method it works great and there are plenty of How To guides to step you through it. As far as backing up your Angry Birds, Titanium Backup works very well. However, you do need root access for that app to work. The free version will do what your looking for. The pro version adds a couple nice features if you are going to play around with some different ROMs.

I'm still fairly new to the root world. I don't know or have not read of any way to back up your apps reliably without root access. Titanium backup, and Mybackup Pro are the 2 most common apps used to make back ups. There might be more? Titanium requires root, where Mybackup claims to have some functionality without root access.
From mybackup pro's website:
Key facts about MyBackup Pro:
Works on non-root phones, as well as root phones.
Root phones have the ability to backup APK+Data and Market Links.
Titanium has a free version that you can use that will back up your apps and all of their data. The Pro version adds a couple nice features that are handy for people that flash roms and like to change stuff around often.
Without root access Mybackup only does:
Application install files (If phone has root access, this includes APK+Data and Market Links)
Contacts
Call log
Browser bookmarks
SMS (text messages)
MMS (attachments in messages)
System Settings
Home screens (including HTC Sense UI)
Alarms
Dictionary
Calendar
Music playlists
Integrated third party applications
Not really what you want. Since you would lose your angry birds data and spend hours trying to gain 3 stars again on the levels! If you flashed the new Ruu.
It boils down to what you are comfortable doing I guess. Rooting is not for everyone. If you do not want to root you are pretty much stuck waiting on vzw and htc to get their OTA fixed and pushed back out.
Rooting is easy with Revolutionary, but you do void your warranty and open the door to being able to delete important system files. Once you root most likely you will find it hard to resist the urge to flash and try out new roms to!

I think the easiest way is to just root it. Revolutionary method is pretty easy (I hear). I used the old school ADB method (which was nerve racking for me bc I am no Android guru). The Revolutionary method is a little harder to un-root though.
Are you opposed to rooting bc of the warranty issue? After you root than you can back up all your data. I don't know of a way to back up data wo root. Plus with root access you can flash some sweet roms.
If you will link me to the guide I will try to remember to get back to you with some more thoughts

Yeah, I don't really wanna root. I might have to try that out. But when you say:

^doesn't the "APK=data" part mean the saves within each app?

Oh yeah. that file will most certainly wipe you out and you'll have to start all over. I still haven't found a solution for backing up wo out root. Sorry.
I'm pretty sure backing up the .apk part isn't a big deal, worst case you can just redownload that. You want the DATA part backed up. The apk is just the file format android uses to install software. Like .exe in windows. (I'm pretty sure at least.)
The post from android police you linked will definitely wipe everything. If you don't make a root accessible back up you will lose all of your app data.
I totally understand the warranty concern. I held out for as long as I could. I received the OTA to GB and was very unimpressed. After hoping for months that the update would be more than what it is, I took the leap into freedom of root and made my phone what I wanted it to be.
Sounds like you should check out some new backgrounds to keep you interested in your current setup.

HAHA Good Luck man.
Have a rooted Thunderbolt. Am trying to install an app approved by my employer to access email, calendar, and contacts from my phone instead of using my employer issued blackberry. I'm all approved but ran into a snag.
It locked the application because my phone is rooted.
None of the pre-requisites mention it not being allowed on a rooted phone, but that's beside the point. Is there a way to make the app think it's not rooted? I'd rather carry my Blackberry around as a seoncd phone, as awful as it is, than unroot my phone and go back to a stock rom.
Didn't see anything when searching...please help!

What email client are you trying to set up? I have read a few threads about people having issues with corporate email accounts on rooted phones. I do not think I've ever read a solution that worked either. Do some searches for Corporate Email with root on the normal forums we all browse and I'm sure you will see the number of people asking to accomplish this is significant.
It's a client called "Good". It basically encapsulates all company information (email, contacts, calendars) encrypted within the application. Also allows the IT department to wipe the data remotely without wiping your phone. Company I work for is a huge company "300k plus) and has always been BlackBerry only. They're just now rolling this out to android and iphone...but the "Rooted?" criteria is messing me up.
I'll keep searching, but have had little luck so far.
Just unroot if it is a work phone, why take chances.
If I helped you in any way please use the thank you button
The first time you launched it, did it request superuser permissions ? If so, and you said "allow", it knows you're phone is rooted by the exit code it got back from the 'su' app. If that happens, try this:
- in your app drawer, find the program "Superuser" and launch it.
- scroll through list to find "Good", then tap it
- depending on your version of SU you might have different options to choose here
- tap the 'trashcan' icon
- exit Superuser app and try your "Good" app again
If that doesn't work, try this:
- uninstall app
- reinstall app
- launch app
- DENY access to superuser rights when prompted
If it's determining it has root access another way, I can't help...

It's not a work phone...it's my personal phone. The whole idea is you turn in your BlackBerry and then they give you a $25/mo allowance toward your personal cell bill, then you can still access all the stuff you need from work.
FWIW, I searched the forum (all devices) for "Good for Enterprise" and hit the jackpot. Guess it's all about phrasing it right. Here's an example of one of the helpful links:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1032268
So, once i have a custom ROM, is there a way to re-root but keep the ROM? Would I lose access to CWM (for nandroid backups)? I assume I'd lose titanium backup and wireless tether...tough choices. I haven't lived without root in so long that I don't know if I can do it...
Hehe, interesting...
Good for Enterprise on rooted phones
Have fun reading !! I haven't checked any of those results yet myself.
---------- Post added at 04:20 PM ---------- Previous post was at 04:13 PM ----------
Based on the first link I checked from ^^ above ^^, it doesn't base it on how you respond to Superuser, it simply looks for the existence of su.apk, superuser.apk, etc. If it finds them, it stops. And no, renaming those files, then running it won't work either as it checks every time it's run !!
One alternative is:
Create a script file that a) renames the relevant superuser files, b) launches "Good", and finally, when "Good" exits, c) renames the superuser files back to their original names.

Recent update to this app, according to "What's New" page in the Market (https://market.android.com/details?id=com.good.android.gfe&hl=en): Security Enhancements: Better detection of rooted devices to protect your information You may be fighting a losing battle on this one. Even if you figure a way around it, rest assured that the developers of the app browse Android forums seeing how people are NOW getting around their detection routines and will defeat those next.
Of course, it's POSSIBLE that turning this detection on is an admin-level setting that you could ask the IT folks to turn off. It sounds like it's phone-level though, unless on launch, it first queries it's back-end server and then does the relevant checks on the phone side.
It checks every time it's launched, and can be checked at any time. Sucks.
To be honest, I don't blame them for blocking rooted phones...as sensitive as the information is that will be in the app, I'd probably do it too. I just don't want to give up my custom ROM, wireless tether and titanium backup
Would deleting su and superuser.apk have any negative effects (other than disallowing rooted apps)? From what i can tell, those are what Good uses to check for root. Removing them would effectively remove root, so I would be in compliance. And in theory, i could just restore from a rooted nandroid backup to get root back, right?

This was the closest yet...fantastic app. It does successfully remove su and temporarily removes root. However, it looks like GFE also checks for existence of hte superuser.apk. I've messaged the dev to see if there's a way to hide that, but considering that's what's used to root and unroot at will, not sure how that'd work. Hopefully the dev is smarter than me and can figure something out! But very close.

I wish. This is the only way they allow due to the extra encryption and ability to remotely wipe data.
Two Words: Dual Boot.
Get your regular "At home" rooted rom all nice and prettied up, then when you get in the car for work, boot into a stock rom that isn't rooted for work specifically.

hi. you can use apps such as Hide my root. they are available in Google Play.
Good Luck
I am surprised that I couldn't find this by Googling it, but anyway.
Is there a list anywhere of software that Sprint puts on the EVO 3D that cannot be removed on a non-rooted stock ROM? And are there any that could break any features or functionality of the stock ROM if removed?
I am sure there is a list somewhere.
couldn't tell you off the top of my head though. I think all of sprints bloatware/shyte is uninstallable. there are certain things you need in order for you to get access to their networds and crap, or make quick calls to customer service....
but there are stripped ROMs on this forum that have all of it removed, and they run fine.
just go to your /system/app directory with root ex, mount as r/w, multi select, select all, hit delete...
I'm kidding... don't do that. ever. bad things will happen... you need those apps for your ROM to function.

Thats what I thought at first too, but I noticed that I have manual updates available for a bunch of junk on my phone like Blockbuster, Sprint TV, Nascar, etc that I could REALLY use the space they are taking up, but have no uninstall option. It only lets me uninstall updates, not the apps themselves.

Hello, I've updated to Lolipop and have been loving it. oc5
I decided to root and install TWRP custom recovery.
I went to use Sprint Zone to check my bill and it's gone!
Does sprint zone disappear when you root? Does it disappear when you use a custom recovery such as TWRP?
Did I install something that thought I wanted to get rid of 'bloatware?'
I did install triangle away and busybox pro. I don't think these apps removed it without my knowledge?
Also noticed that all sprint apps and zone are gone from the 'all apps' list.
If sprint zone uninstalls when we root or get a custom recovery, is there any way to get it back?
If not, does anyone have a sm-n900p lollipop version of sprint zone as an installable apk? oc5
Is there any point if it will just uninstall itself again?
Also, is there any reason I don't want to use Sprint Zone while using TWRP and root?
Thank you for your time!

I lost it from the update to lollipop before I ever rooted.
I called Sprint to see what they said.
After a long phone call with lots of trial and error, they had me install this app and run option 1.
It reset all the home screen settings/widgets I had set.
Some other settings were back to default as well. (I don't remember exactly what)
But, I now have Sprint Zone and a couple other bloat apps I was missing that I didn't care were missing.
I was wondering if this app would fix the missing wifi calling and other missing things?
My phone was not yet rooted when I used this app.
My phone went through hands free activation twice and rebooted a couple times.
I'm not sure how it will work on rooted phone, or if it will break root or anything else.

Good luck!
