Just got my Photon yesterday afternoon. Woot!
Having a couple issues with Handcent and Go SMS (trying them both out).
Handcent: Background images, in both the list and conversations, is very distorted.
Go SMS: Background image is SLIGHTLTY blurring (could just be me though) but main issue is contact pictures won't show, in list or conversation. They show fine in Handcent.
Any of you having similar issues. I haven't tried a reinstall of each. I kinda thought it was just an app thing and the dev's haven't updated them for the photon yet.
Thanks.
are you using facebook for your pictures? If so if im not mistaken facebook does not allow other apps to use the pictures. use syncmypix to sync the facebook pics to your gmail account and that should take care of it.

Thanks for mentioning that app. Exactly what I've been looking for.
I am using Facebook but my contact pics appear fine. They show up in my Contacts app, GMail and Handcent just not in Go SMS.

Try going to Handcent settings -> Notification settings -> Popup settings -> scroll down to "blur background" and check or uncheck as appropriate.
Seriously?
kimmied, you are an idiot. The problem is BACKGROUND and CONVERSATION list images. How is changing the POPUP settings going to fix the problem?
people astonish me.

As the OP said. I don't know if this is a specific problem to the Motorola Photon, or not. I just got mine a couple weeks ago. But I am having the same problem. For right now, I've just been having to use a theme, and the backgrounds for those are fine. But when I try to set my own picture as the conversation list background, they are blurry and distorted. I've tried several different pictures, all HD. For me it's JUST the conversation list background. The background on the chat is fine. I have been trying to be patient and wait for a Handcent update and one was released a few days ago, but still no fix =[

I use GO SMS and love it. I especially like the pop-up SMS feature.

hey galaxy_s.. what astonishes me is how people pounce on someone else's mistake and try to use it to somehow prove how intelligent they are.. why didn't you offer up a solution? i don't see the point of taking the time to post when you aren't going to add anything to the discussion.. that thanks meter of yours will probably say 0 until you learn to quit acting like a child..
as far as the topic goes, I have learned over time that android handles images very inconsistently.. try using quickpic or something when you crop the picture you are using for the background.. i could be way off with that, but i know that i've had success with wallpapers by using different apps (wallpaper set & save, etc.) for cropping..
for contact pictures, do this (I apologize if this was listed or you already know it):
1. open GoSMS
2. on conversation list page hit menu
3. go to settings
4. click advanced tab
5. click appearance settings
6. click conv. list customization
7. click display contact pictures?
8. click yes
9. back out and save your customization
NOTE: it should start using it automatically but if it doesn't choose it from the user defined settings list found under the 'conv. list customization' link
if i misread what you're saying and you cant see contact pictures but you see the placeholders then the issue might be the native contact not storing contact pictures in the same place that gosms is looking for them at...
okay.. i'm done..
galaxy_s.. tell your mom to call me so she can pick up her clothes..

Hey all. This might seem like a silly question, but its really irking me. Recently I installed the update to Smooth Calendar. Upon installing the update, it started listing the times in a 24-hour format instead of the 12-hour format I'd prefer. Naturally, I tried uninstalling the update, but it retained this odd setting. There doesn't seem to be any way to change this in the app's config menu either.
Can anyone help me figure out how to bring the widget back to the 12-hour style time listings? Just for some info: I'm using an Epic 4g with a mostly stock rom.
Thanks!
there should be a setting for "use am/pm"

Thanks. Not sure how I didn't see that before.
Hi everybody, I'm using Smooth Calendar too on an San Francisco @ 2.3.3.
Got an issue:
-> In my google calendar I have an event starting at 19h.
-> After updating my android calendar the event is stored in the calendar at 19h.
-> But, the problem is here, in the smooth calendar widget it apears at 18h.
How can I solve that?

I think the settings have changed recently. There used to a button to change from 24hr to 12hr but it seems to be missing. It has a premium version now, but I can't find anywhere that says what's in the update.
Sent an email to the developer. He has a Facebook page, but the last post was from March

I figured it out! It's hiding under the Portrait and Landscape mode settings. The Dev emailed me back after I asked him why it is hiding like that. He said he's going to change it!
Any reason why when I receive a picture it comes as a video? I mean if I forward it, others get it as a picture. If someone sends me a picture and types something in the message before sending it, the whole thing comes as a video. I have to sit and watch the words on the screen for a few seconds, then the picture comes up. If I happen to miss the words, I have to stop the video and restart it. This is just a quirky annoyance, but an annoyance nonetheless.
This has happened on CM7, UnNamed, and stock roms, so I'm thinking it's inherint to the Droid OS. Any way to stop it, or anything anyone can shed some light on about it?

Same here. VERY annoying. I downloaded Gosmspro just so I wouldn't have to watch a picture as a slide show.BTW first Android device.
It is not inherent to the ANDROID system. I hate when people call it a Droid. If I wanted a "Droid" I would have gone to Verizon and gotten one.
As stated it depends on what app you are using for texting. Gosmspro is probably the best and doesn't do slideshow mms like the stock mms app does.

mms.apk is in /system/app . download CM7 and open up the zip file. drag mms.apk to your desktop.
I have installed it and tested it 2 ways. the first was by just adding it to another ZIP and flashing it ( I used the 14 panel MOD file ). If you have SDK installed you can also do this...
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb remount
remount succeeded
C:\Program Files (x86)\Android\android-sdk\platform-tools>adb push Mms.apk /system/app

There is a way to save them. Play the MMS, press menu, attached items and click save.
The way to forward them is to long press the message (not the picture) and additional options will become available. Press forward and you are done.
MMS as a video/slideshow is really annoying. Hopefully there is a fix without having to install the CM version.

It's not inherent on the Android operating system. My Xperia X10 and multiple other Androids do not do this. I think it's a Samsung thing because on my X10 the gallery app opens up the MMS.

Hi all, I have searched about this issue and it seems like there isn't a workaround for it. I recently acquired SGS3, and found this Email issue very annoying (specifically Hotmail). I tried K9 and MailDroid, and found that they didn't have as good as a Push feature as the stock SGS3 email app. (I was an avid Blackberry user)
Anyway, I just want to bring this to the attention of other more knowledgeable users on xda. Are there any methods to make Hotmail Email sent from SGS3 (using stock email app) show the Full sender name instead of the Hotmail login name?
Others with the same issues:

Is it possible to set the from name when sending an email using the default email app?
I'm sending via hotmail configured as exchange in the app but the from name always shows as the full name associated with my live login. On all my other ICS devices, in the standard email app its possible to configure what you want to show as your name in the from field.
Is this no longer possible as it looks like they've removed the option from the configuration screen. Any hack to do it?

ok i finally managed to fix it in a very primative way, when you are going to your account settings you can see the "your name" option n it disappears right away, what you need to do is to change any option in the menu n exit, then get in the settings again n this time the "your name" option will last a second or two, enough time to hit it to be able to change it

This worked perfectly. I've had my Galaxy Note for just under a year and have had to resort to the official Hotmail app on the market which is very buggy. I was seriously annoyed when my name wouldn't appear from the stock email app, it otherwise worked very well.
As you said, when you enter the settings menu the Your name option appears for a second before disappearing. The only way to get it to return is to change any menu option, close the menu and then return to the menu. You have to be quick but you can select the option before it disappears and edit your name in the dialogue box that appears.
Good find!
It took a few attempts but here's a screenshot taken during that tiny one second window.
Isn't there another way to get the Your Name option updated? Unfortunately I must be really to slow as I'm never able catch that option for the fraction of second I see it...

Hello I am new here.
I was able to set up custom notifications for all the apps as soon as the msg comes(eg facebook etc)
However, when doing the same for twitter, it does not let me do it. I go into settings and the notification and selecting ringtone section is greyed out. Therefore, I am not able to get push notifications for twitter. I have to go manually into twitter and see if there have been any new messages or tweets directed to me.
I will really appreciate if someone will help me with this.
Thanks...!
Not much use to ya but i've just started having this problem on my SGS3.. no twitter notifications (was working fine last week) now i get nothing and the options are grayed out! :/ if i find a solution i'll get back to you!

Perhaps try a new Twitter app. I really like Uber Social myself. It has a fantastic widget. Not sure if it supports custom tones. Try different things and let us know.

A bit more information is needed ....
What rom ?
Are you using TW social hub features ? Or stand alone twitter ?
If stand alone application ....then pm the app developer directly for bug report.....IMHO
Either way ....a different app may help you ....
Good luck ....g

Thank you so much for that !
The last 2 Gmail updates have really messed things up for me. My major complaints about the update are:
1. Google decided that you must choose between archiving or deleting, but that you will never want to do both. In the settings, you can choose 'Archive & Delete Actions' > 'Show Archive Only' or 'Show Delete Only' or Show Archive and Delete'. So far, so good.
If you choose the logical setting, 'Show Archive and Delete', both the archive and delete icons show up at the top of the screen while you're inside an email. This is pretty much the way the previous version worked. The problem is, that if you choose 'Show Archive and Delete', the swipe option changes to 'Swipe to Archive' and the 'Swipe to Delete' option goes away. The only way to have 'Swipe to Delete' is to select 'Archive & Delete Actions' > Show Delete Only'. But when you do this, you lose the Archive icon at the top of your email.
This seems to me extremely illogical. Why not provide the option to choose 'Swipe to Delete' or 'Swipe to Archive' independent of which icons show at the top of the email (which is how the previous version worked). Even better, why not set up the Swipe option so that a left swipe deletes and a right swipe archives??? This would seem to be the sensible way to do this.
2. The new version takes away the old check boxes that were used to select multiple messages and replaces them with big, garish blobs that are not functional and take up a lot of real estate. If you get rid of the identity blocks, you lose the ability to select multiple messages easily
It really seems that Google must have some agenda driving these crumby design choices. More and more, they're bloating up their interfaces with a lot of stuff that makes the apps worse. This is the way Microsoft likes to do things. Google used to be good at keeping their interfaces clean and functional.
Anyway, now that I've got that rant off my chest, I'm looking for the APK for the older version of Gmail, about 2 updates back. Does anybody know where I might find it?
They don't force you to use it, take it as it is or just don't update.
I assume you could just download a gapps package from some rom and then extract the gmail apk....
I don't even use Gmail.
uses too much battery compared to stock email app.
I use the stock email app and remove gmail.

Probably the best idea. I was hoping that there was an archive of previous versions that was being maintained somewhere, but I might find the right version in somebody's gapps packages.
