The last 2 Gmail updates have really messed things up for me. My major complaints about the update are:
1. Google decided that you must choose between archiving or deleting, but that you will never want to do both. In the settings, you can choose 'Archive & Delete Actions' > 'Show Archive Only' or 'Show Delete Only' or Show Archive and Delete'. So far, so good.
If you choose the logical setting, 'Show Archive and Delete', both the archive and delete icons show up at the top of the screen while you're inside an email. This is pretty much the way the previous version worked. The problem is, that if you choose 'Show Archive and Delete', the swipe option changes to 'Swipe to Archive' and the 'Swipe to Delete' option goes away. The only way to have 'Swipe to Delete' is to select 'Archive & Delete Actions' > Show Delete Only'. But when you do this, you lose the Archive icon at the top of your email.
This seems to me extremely illogical. Why not provide the option to choose 'Swipe to Delete' or 'Swipe to Archive' independent of which icons show at the top of the email (which is how the previous version worked). Even better, why not set up the Swipe option so that a left swipe deletes and a right swipe archives??? This would seem to be the sensible way to do this.
2. The new version takes away the old check boxes that were used to select multiple messages and replaces them with big, garish blobs that are not functional and take up a lot of real estate. If you get rid of the identity blocks, you lose the ability to select multiple messages easily
It really seems that Google must have some agenda driving these crumby design choices. More and more, they're bloating up their interfaces with a lot of stuff that makes the apps worse. This is the way Microsoft likes to do things. Google used to be good at keeping their interfaces clean and functional.
Anyway, now that I've got that rant off my chest, I'm looking for the APK for the older version of Gmail, about 2 updates back. Does anybody know where I might find it?
They don't force you to use it, take it as it is or just don't update.
I assume you could just download a gapps package from some rom and then extract the gmail apk....
I don't even use Gmail.
uses too much battery compared to stock email app.
I use the stock email app and remove gmail.
your question belongs here bro
That's a lot of typing for a simple question. Anyways, a member who has been around as Lon as you has should know questions go in the Q/A section
You could just 'uninstall updates' in the app info....

When I uninstall updates, I go all the way back to the stock app, which is too many versions back. I'm looking for a specific version from a month or so ago.

Perhaps you should look into the custom Roms for your device and look at the gmail apps in those roms to see if they are the ones you are looking for. Perhaps older versions of gapps as well.

Probably the best idea. I was hoping that there was an archive of previous versions that was being maintained somewhere, but I might find the right version in somebody's gapps packages.

Just got my Photon yesterday afternoon. Woot!
Having a couple issues with Handcent and Go SMS (trying them both out).
Handcent: Background images, in both the list and conversations, is very distorted.
Go SMS: Background image is SLIGHTLTY blurring (could just be me though) but main issue is contact pictures won't show, in list or conversation. They show fine in Handcent.
Any of you having similar issues. I haven't tried a reinstall of each. I kinda thought it was just an app thing and the dev's haven't updated them for the photon yet.
Thanks.
are you using facebook for your pictures? If so if im not mistaken facebook does not allow other apps to use the pictures. use syncmypix to sync the facebook pics to your gmail account and that should take care of it.

Thanks for mentioning that app. Exactly what I've been looking for.
I am using Facebook but my contact pics appear fine. They show up in my Contacts app, GMail and Handcent just not in Go SMS.
Handcent: Background images, in both the list and conversations, is very distorted.
Try going to Handcent settings -> Notification settings -> Popup settings -> scroll down to "blur background" and check or uncheck as appropriate.
Seriously?
kimmied, you are an idiot. The problem is BACKGROUND and CONVERSATION list images. How is changing the POPUP settings going to fix the problem?
people astonish me.

As the OP said. I don't know if this is a specific problem to the Motorola Photon, or not. I just got mine a couple weeks ago. But I am having the same problem. For right now, I've just been having to use a theme, and the backgrounds for those are fine. But when I try to set my own picture as the conversation list background, they are blurry and distorted. I've tried several different pictures, all HD. For me it's JUST the conversation list background. The background on the chat is fine. I have been trying to be patient and wait for a Handcent update and one was released a few days ago, but still no fix =[

hey galaxy_s.. what astonishes me is how people pounce on someone else's mistake and try to use it to somehow prove how intelligent they are.. why didn't you offer up a solution? i don't see the point of taking the time to post when you aren't going to add anything to the discussion.. that thanks meter of yours will probably say 0 until you learn to quit acting like a child..
as far as the topic goes, I have learned over time that android handles images very inconsistently.. try using quickpic or something when you crop the picture you are using for the background.. i could be way off with that, but i know that i've had success with wallpapers by using different apps (wallpaper set & save, etc.) for cropping..
for contact pictures, do this (I apologize if this was listed or you already know it):
1. open GoSMS
2. on conversation list page hit menu
3. go to settings
4. click advanced tab
5. click appearance settings
6. click conv. list customization
7. click display contact pictures?
8. click yes
9. back out and save your customization
NOTE: it should start using it automatically but if it doesn't choose it from the user defined settings list found under the 'conv. list customization' link
if i misread what you're saying and you cant see contact pictures but you see the placeholders then the issue might be the native contact not storing contact pictures in the same place that gosms is looking for them at...
okay.. i'm done..
galaxy_s.. tell your mom to call me so she can pick up her clothes..

Whenever a new notification appears in my notification bar on stock gb rom its always accompanied by the same four browser notifications from months back saying download completed.
I downloaded some images off net for my blog using browser and even when I click clear to clear the notifications its only the same four download completed ones reappear.
Is there some way to manually remove them permanently assuming they are stored on device and for some reason not getting deleted properly?

Guess its a silly thing but I tried opening the Download history in the Browser and .......behold!!! This app was actually downloaded from the browser and now that I have cleared it from the browser, it is no longer showing up. Common sense...but well, I really didn't remember I downloaded this one on my browser and not the app market
I have a button which says "Clear" on the right side of the screen, but I have Samsung.
Go into the "Downloads" app or the download history in the browser and clear the files from there. That should stop the notifications.
Try whether this works?
Senior,
How about you give this a try?
1. Move the files which ur screen notifications refer to, into ur PC folder temporarily
2. Delete your download history in your phone
3. Reboot your phone and browse internet again
Check whether the same problem happens? If it's not, then you move your files back into your phone
Sincerely,
whitefang
Here it is for you Facebook fans! Do comment here, if you are actually liking it or not!
I am not gonna use it atm anyway. :silly:
There are 3 apk's you will need to install, here they are:
Main Facebook app:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3dAMHacbZmtR3VOZUdaS2t4MzA/edit?usp=sharing
SMS Messenger integration:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3dAMHacbZmtMHdiUmswV0lMSHM/edit?usp=sharing
Home/Launcher shell:
https://docs.google.com/file/d/0B3dAMHacbZmtTGtZaUtJMlNRUWc/edit?usp=sharing
Some notes:
In order to use the leak, you need an Android device with a maximum resolution of 1280x768 and the ability to completely uninstall your existing Facebook app. This is important, as the leaked APKs are re-signed and can't just be installed over the top of an existing installation. This will automatically exclude some devices which have Facebook installed in the base ROM. If you're on a Nexus device you're good! Even if you do have Facebook in ROM, provided you are rooted there are workarounds - i'll detail these in the comments. If you have any problems installing post below and i'll help if I can.
In the settings you can find some interesting options such as whether to hide the notification bar by default or not (if it is hidden, sweeping down from the top of the screen reveals it). Let us know your thoughts!

If you already have Facebook app installed then:
If you're rooted and want to play on a device with Facebook preinstalled, you need to...
-Find the location of Facebook in your system partition (e.g. /system/app/Facebook.apk or perhaps /system/app/Facebook_Client.apk)
-Delete said file (after backing it up!)
-Reboot device
-Install Facebook from the Play Store then uninstall it
-Install above APKs

Well. Looks like 4.2 thing was discarded. Maybe is as Paul points out: Facebook got mad at us for being so curious and shut down/changed something =(

Hello everyone!
I have the amazing Galaxy Note 2 on big red. I have been a flash junkie for quite some time and have tried just about every flavor (rom) I could find. Some with more success than others.
After Google finally released 4.4 into the wild, I wanted to see what it was like. I am not able to build for this device but when time permits I do want to learn. I am a family man and our life is quite busy. Anyways...
I did a clean flash of the latest P.A. & Gapps so I would have a fresh start. Now, on to the quick and easy...
FLASH ALL THE THINGS!
Step 1 ~ Get the Google Experience Launcher:
PreBuiltGmsCore (Google Play Services 4.0)
Velvet (Google Search)
GoogleHome (Google Launcher)
FIX: Google Search Force Close:
Long press the home screen, select Settings. Select Voice. Select Language to change the default. Change to another language, I choose English – UK. Hit Home. Do a Google Search. Repeat the first three steps. Change back to English – US.
Step 2 ~ Grab the new apk's from the Nexus 5 dump:
Calendar (v201308021)
Clock (v3.0.0)
Email (v6.0-893803)
Gallery (v1.1.40304)
Gmail (v4.6.1)
Camera (v2.0.001)
Hangouts (v2.0.012)
Keep (v2.0.50)
Google Keyboard (v2.0.19003.893803a)
Step 3 ~ Pimp it out!
Grab the flash-tastic kitkat sounds and font's from here!
Profit!
Say thanks to any dev that has ever been helpful! They are what makes this whole shindig possible.
A quick note:
I have compiled these links and information from various sources across the interwebs. I do not claim any of the links as my own as this is simply intended as a resource for others.

Same, it's pretty well done! I'm on Bean's TW so maybe that has something to do with the bugs.
I'll give it a shot, I haven't had any problems with Hangouts, might actually use it for SMS....
Didn't have time to flash this clean with my daily driver but it was cool while I used it. The Google search kept force closing even after I did your fix it would work for an hour then fc but again I didn't flash a clean ROM with pa gapps. Is it absolutely necessary to flash Pa gapps?

Not to my knowledge. Others have stated they have had issues while some haven't. I may have been one of the lucky ones. So far it works great. Occasionally, there is a slight delay but it is not often.

I flashed a 4.3 rom and tried the hangouts again. Everything works except the pics. They send and receive fine, it's just half the time they wont load for me to see, just a black box. Same thing on my TW rom. Darn it, I want hangouts for my sms!!
I have hangouts working perfectly with jelly beans build 22. No black boxes for pics, no force closes. Weird how it's touch and go for everyone. I did nothing fancy to get it working either. Followed instructions from another post. It's very important to reboot after installing. That solved my initial issue of hangouts stuck on connecting for video chats.

Thanks for bringing this to our attention I am running this and it is awesome. Everything seems to work except for me I am having issues with GPS and then if i send a new message to someone in hangouts it never gets received. If someone sends me a message then i can use that conversation in hangouts to chat with them.
I want to believe its an issue because of my google + account.
If anyone uses the email app for work/exchange mail, they will need to push the exchange services apk to the system/app/ folder.
Edit: Fixed that name violation with my google+ account and hangouts messaging works perfect now. If only we could fix gps

Ah, well, ART is a new experimental runtime introduced in Android KitKat (Which I'm assuming is the version you're using) Now i'm not entirely sure on how ART works (Someone feel free to correct me) but it basically store's all or most of the app to the system which allows the phone to access it faster compared to the current runtime (JIT/Dalvik) which loads the app Just In Time, every time you load it up.
For KitKat
Make sure to make a backup before you attempt this incase anything goes wrong resulting in your phone not being able to boot.
To enable the runtime, just navigate to Developer Options (If not alread enabled, go to Settings > About Device and scroll down to "Build Number" Tap that 7 times and it should give you a prompt telling you it's been enabled.
From there, navigate back to the settings menu and all the way to the bottom. You should now see a developer options listing. Click it and scroll all the way to the bottom to the "Apps" Category. Tap the option "Select Runtime" this should bring up a menu with the option to switch between runtimes. Now just press "Use ART" and press OK on the warning that pops up. You're phone will reboot and will now reinstall all and optimise all of your apps ready for ART mode. You will not lose any of your app data.
