Bell Gingerbread update?? - Atrix 4G Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

When is it coming out? I saw in some other thread that it's supposed to come out in "Late summer".. but does anyone have the exact date now?

No date, but if u want gb so badly then unlock your bootloader bud.
Sent from my MB860 using XDA App

The Desire Z just got Gingerbread so the Atrix should be up next.

Do you think that they will unlock the bootloader on this update? Or we should use puddings and forget bell?

First off, doubt it that the BL will be unlocked.
Second, the bigger question is if Bell will do that some BS as AT&T where if you upgrade that you could possibly brick your device by going back to Froyo.
After using both GB and Froyo over the past month, there are days that I wish that I was using the other firmware since IMHO one isn't "truly" better than the other...

The leaked Bell 2.3.4 isn't a really an acceptable option in my opinion.
The deal breaker for me was the freezing / rebooting of the phone when watching some videos or YouTube, and spontaneous reboots when plugging / unplugging USB. Also noticed a few spontaneous reboots at night when not using the phone for some reason. Basically, it was too unstable to use as my main phone. A few other features were broken, such as WebTop.
On the other hand, things I liked: GPS enabled stock camera app, and overall improvement to focusing (I had added a focusing option to a volume button on the old camera because it didn't auto-focus when you first start it). Haptic feedback setting for soft buttons built in. New smoother, more polished transition animations, such as when changing screen orientation. Much improved battery stats screen. Mystery options such as in-pocket detection (did it really actually do anything?). Probably a host of other changes that I've forgotten.

when you unlock the bootloader you can install any rom, so have you tried other versions of 2.3.4?

I did, actually, including cm7, and they all seemed to have their own issues - battery life, and/or broken features. I didn't try them all, by any means, though so there might be some that have corrected the issues by now.

Have you tried the CWM version of the official AT&T 2.3.4 update? That is official update and should be fine!

Went to Bell store here in Toronto and spoke with Mr. MOTOROLA himself. He said "back to school" and after more persistance "very very soon and to keep trying to manually update..".
He had the update on his Atrix already of course for testing.

It's out! I'm downloading it right now as we speak! Download taking more time than expected though.

[Q] How is the 2.08.651.2 update working for you?

I haven't applied it yet, but I want to, just to see if it will fix the massive issues I've had with this phone. I know it supposedly breaks root, but I don't care about that. I know it also should fix the missing phone icon on the lockscreen (broken in 1.13.651.7).
Any issues?
It suck. Gps doesn't work when I really need it to, home page goes blank after hitting home from texting (sometimes), Gps symbol stays crossed out after turning off and back on, and worst of all front facing camera doesn't work...instead I get the rear image fliped upside down. I'm not rooted, nor do I need or want to. I'm going to try to take it 2 a store in the morning. I'll try to do a update when i find out more.

Im loving it. It feels smoother than 2.3.3 IMO. Also, GPS locks faster than usual. Overall, I feel its an a great upgrade to the guts of the OS.
I'm running Synergy Nightly BTW so my results are skewed.
Why don't u just backup and flash the stock ROM with the update built in and see. U can test it out without losing root
That's what i ran before my current ROM and it ran good. Weather fix and screenshot was really nice

I dont know why your camera does not work because mine and about 8-13 other evo 3d's my friends own all work after the ota. Our gps locks on hella lot faster also. I have literally NO issues so far. plus, my battery life, increased by a whole day with heavy texting, bluetoothing music to my headphone for 6+ hours a day, and 3g pandora.
My only Quirk that bugs me is when unlocking the screen sometimes it goes into the camera but that is it.
I dont notice much difference other than that

Same here + the camera looks better.
Initially, I was disappointed by the performance of the ROM, but I later found that my tweaking I did to build.prop (increase dalvik vm, gui forced to run hardware acceleration) was actually causing this version to perform poorly compared to the 1.13.651.7 ROM. After not using those tweaks anymore, the 2.08.651.2 update is running smoothly. Only complaint I have is with the new CIQ spyware that is on this version However, it is easily removed with custom kernel and uninstalling the proper apks.
Love it. Camera green hue is gone for me. Built in screen caputure (power+home button). Adjusting volume no longer cause stutter when viewing videos. Everything just runs smoother. I say upgrade away.
Thanks for all your responses.

A couple of these problems I've had before upgrading anything (GPS went out once when I was outside in the middle of LA, GPS icon stays on/off after switching it off/on). Hopefully I won't get your other issues, but everything else is going wrong with this phone, so I'll probably try the custom-rom-upgrade first.

Haven't rooted yet because if it's this buggy when I'm using it like it supposed to be used, I fear it will be twice as bad and maybe bricked when I actually try to get tricky with it.

I am really looking forward to the screen capture.
I have to say...Stock roms being buggy does not equate to custom roms being twice as buggy. I would highly recommend you root before taking the OTA and checking out some custom roms. You might be quite surprised with the performance. Just my 2 cents though. Good luck either way!

[Q] Looking for a little advice

So! My mother is on the lookout for a new phone, and this guy is cheap on Verizons site. Her phone that she has now, the LG Revolution, has constant freezing issues that irritate her beyond all belief, and because I know Android she dumps them all on me. I'm looking for some questions answered about this phone before I decide if this is the phone for her:
I have read on the Engadget Review that this phone freezes often. After custom ROMs are installed (I'm thinking MIUI), is this problem alleviated?
The LG Revolution has this weird issue where it's way too easy to scroll on it, which makes opening icons on any homescreen app drawer a huge PITA.
I basically need to be able to install ROM, drop it in her hands, and feel comfortable that she's not going to run into any hardware issues with the phone. This includes freezing because of memory issues.
Also, the drop of 4G isn't an issue, it's not in the area anyways.
Thanks guys for your comments and advice ahead of time.
This device pretty much poops on the revolution. That being said my device never froze when it was stock. We have alot of rom options from mtd based roms such as android 4.0 ICS v4, CM7.1 stable, Miui, Tsm pool party...also there are some really good TouchWiz Ginberbread roms such as, Superclean v.5, PWGB, Geewiz etc... I currently am bouncing between cm7 and ICS, but I cant say those are the best roms, they all are pretty good. You will just have to try them and see what your mother likes best.
No freezing problems here, although it does bug out on me with random pressings of the back key. Sometimes the phone will enter screen capture mode and take a screen shot every time I try to power it down. Removing the screencapture apk solves this.
Overall it has been a good phone and has served me well. Gotta love that Samsung display!
I havent had this device for that long, but I love it compared to by old Droid X, mostly due to nicer screen, better battery life, and easier hack-ability.
That being said, I personally am curious on what has been done, if anything, to the LG.
Has it been rooted?
Are you running aftermarket software?
Some freezing issues can be solved by changing ram parameters, others by getting rid of certain bad apps.
I personally would like to see if your problems are actually solvable before getting a new and unfamiliar device, just for S&G's of course
It is rooted, and even after messing with the ram settings tweaked it still freezes. The other problem is that it dies way quickly, even with JuiceDefender and a calibrated battery. She's only had it for a week, so she's not yet settled on that one's ways.

I've had this phone for almost two years now and I've never had it freeze up on me. Install the SuperClean3 ROM. Solid ROM for that phone. I currently have ICS but for your mother's phone use SC3.

I'm also a fan of SuperClean. Great rom, with none of the AOSP issues that I find to be annoying enough to avoid. If you want to tweak it a bit, add KGB kernel and maybe a different launcher (I like OMFGB-Launcher) and Rom Toolbox will handle just about everything else. This is my setup, no major tweaks (lag fix, etc) other than zram and 1.2 gHz overclock. Fast and stable.

New to Fascinate, coming from Incredible forums and have a few questions.

I have had an Incredible since about October of 2010 and it finally bit the dust and I have moved to the Fascinate because of the price and awesome reviews the phone has received.
I have a few questions about the Fascinate.
What known bugs does this phone have? Are the bugs specific to Froyo, Gingerbread or both?
Which stock ROM is better for this device, Froyo or Gingerbread? (I prefer Froyo for the Incredible)
Is there a mostly stock ROM for this phone that is completely stable, zero bugs and zippy?
What is the best and easiest root method?
Is there anything I need to do before I root?
Thanks for any help.
Take a look at my guide in the general section. Section 1 has i.structions for flashing imo one of the best froyo roms...its just a enhanced version of stock froyo that yields awsome battery life. I also have a section (5) on rooting, but its not needed if your flashing a custom rom. Pretty much all of the latest roms for the fascinate are pre rooted.
Thanks a lot! I will check this out over the weekend.

Welcome to the fascinate forums ej, I too came from an incredible not too long ago so here's a couple things that should help you out.
First, you do not need to root to flash a rom/recovery/whatever. Samsung apparently leaves the security pretty wide open so you're free to flash an alternate recovery in odin then flash the rom of your choice from there. This was a weird concept for me coming from the incredible, and I think a lot of people just assume that you need to root before flashing roms (as that's how it is with moto, HTC, etc) but that's not the case.
I don't know if you prefer stock or AOSP roms, on the stock front, I think there's Superclean, Geewhiz, and TSM resurrection. These should be quite stable stock-ish roms that don't have the bugs that AOSP roms do. AOSP roms (ICS/MIUI/CM7/TSM PoolParty) on the fascinate use a different and faster filesystem (MTD). I can't really comment on any roms but MIUI/CM7/ICS as that's all I've ever used personally. The AOSP bugs that I've run into (currently on CM7) are data issues - data will occasionally drop out requiring airplane mode toggle, or will get stuck on 1x after sending/receiving SMS. Also there's a weird thing where the earpiece volume during calls will default to a high volume (just requires a quick volume adjustment or tasker script). I don't always notice this happening though.
I'll probably think of more later on, those are just the ones that come to mind at the moment. Hope this helps.

Thanks for the help, you answered many of my questions! A few more though...
Is the volume bug with all ROM's or just with certain ones?
How would you rate this phone against the Incredible, and can I use Mesmerize ROM's too? Would you recommend Froyo for this phone or Gingerbread?

The volume bug is something that I've read is an issue with all MTD roms (CM7/MIUI/ICS), but in my experience, I've only noticed it a couple times, and I've only been on MTD roms since I got this phone a month or two ago. What I'm trying to say is, it's a pretty minor concern for me, but I don't actually talk on the phone all that much.
IMO, this phone is a nice upgrade coming from the incredible. Not galaxy nexus-like nice upgrade, but still, considering I sold my incredible for what I paid for the fascinate, it was totally worth it. One of the big things you'll notice coming from the incredible is the screen. I had an AMOLED incredible, and the SAMOLED on the fascinate is *much* better. You get a little more screen real estate (3.7" vs 4") and the display itself is just much more vibrant and closer to the actual glass part of the touchscreen that you interact with. Also, with voodoo color, you can tweak the display exactly to your liking, which is something I've definitely enjoyed being able to do.
Also, if you use your phone as a media player, you will love the WM8994 DAC used in the Galaxy S line. It sounds absolutely amazing paired with the voodoo control (app that lets you tweak sound and display) - considerably better than any ipod I've tested it side-by-side against. The audio quality alone will make it hard for me to upgrade, considering the DACs used in the newer generation devices like the Nexus or Galaxy SII are actually inferior to the one used in the original Galaxy S phones.
There is one downgrade coming from the incredible though, and that's the RAM (384MB vs 512MB), but I haven't run into any situation yet where the RAM was insufficient to do what I wanted to do. Also, if you're in to tweaking kernel things, you can do MUCH more with the kernels on this device compared to the incredible.
I'm not sure about mesmerize roms, I don't think you could use them on the fascinate unless they were modified. Are there any mes-specific roms you've seen that aren't available on the fascinate? As far as froyo vs GB, I can't really comment on that either since I've only used GB/ICS. Now that I think of it, aside from stock roms, I haven't seen any froyo roms around. But that's probably because I got the phone right around when GB finally officially came out for it.

After spending some time with this phone I have some issues with it...
1. Lowest in-call volume is TOO HIGH!
2. Headset buttons don't work other than pause, play, answer, and end. (GAY!)
3. When I end a call and hit the power button to turn the screen off, it comes back on! (with Widget Locker) regular lock works fine to keep the screen off after a call. Hmm
4. Music playback doesn't seem to sound right. (sounds tinny)
5. Volume buttons turn the screen on! (What the hell?)

try flashing the glitch v13.1 kernel, should help with in call volume...thats if your currently on a mtd rom. If your running a TW rom, then use the kgb kernel and use terminal to adjust call volume settings.

1. I'm on glitch kernel and it's fine for me. You can also customize all sorts of volumes but I've just left em at the default.
2. What other functions are besides play, pause, answer/end aren't working? Track skipping? I have a pair of headphones with inline controls and nothing works on MTD roms for me, so your already a bit ahead of the curve in comparison.
3. Sounds like something with widgetlocker, not necessarily the phone.
4. Adjust settings in Voodoo control if you need. Music sounds *amazing* with my setup. I personally delete DSPmanager and just use VC.
5. This is something that can be turned on or off with CM7/MIUI. You didn't say what rom or kernel you're using so it's kinda hard to help.

Oh yeah, I totally forgot to tell you what ROM I'm using.
I'm on the Geewiz 2.3 Gingerbread ROM and kernel because I always like some goodies but I try to stay as close to stock as possible for stability reasons. I know the volume issue is with Widgetlocker but it didn't do that on the Dinc so, I have to have something to blame right? Ha...
Do the US Cellular Mesmerize phones have the same issues as our phones? Ya know like the headset control, in-call volume too high and all that?
Oh I gotcha, does the kernel you're using support voodoo sound? If not, I'd try out another one that does and then check out your music. And yes, I think the issues that are common to the phone affect the fascinate/mesmerize/showcase since they're essentially the same phone. I don't know much about touchwiz roms, but I'd suggest looking into a kernel with more features, you might be able to tweak those things that you're having an issue with.

I tried the KGB kernel and it has an option to boost in-call volume but nothing to lower it. The tinny sound issue was my inline remote I use for the headphones, it had a faulty volume slider that needed some cleaning. Thanks for all your help!

Oh okay, I thought all theses issues were probably software issues with Verizon's ROM/kernel. Yes, Geewiz kernel supports voodoo.

[Q] CM10 Screen Sensitivity

I installed CM10 on my Droid X2 and I just couldn't get past the screen sensitivity -- everything was jumpy to the point where the phone wasn't usable. Is this something others have noticed, too? Is there a way to adjust the sensitivity?

What do you mean it was jumpy? Are you saying it is too sensitive? I dont know of any way to adjust it but I have no problems with it.

Yeah, way too sensitive. Damn, maybe it's just my Droid X2. I'd scroll up an down and it was just super sensitive, moving up and down at the slightest touch.

Also -- the screen seemed to flicker way more. I think some of it was intentional (the screen dimming and brightening). As much as I liked the look, I went back to CM7.
I haven't noticed any screen flicker, or too sensitive touch
It has seemed less sensitive, to me
You are not the only one. Had same thing on my DX2. It happened 4-5 times.
I just kept trying to get "power off / reboot" screen and reboot. After reboot everything was good.
Also had faster battery drain, purchased a 3600mAh and it would almost last 10 hours on CM10.
Two days ago went back to CM7, battery will last 14-16 hours with same usage.
Going to wait for next CM10 release to try again.

You guys need to understand that this ROM will never be perfect. Even the next update will have issues.
Understand, also understand ANY ROM can have issues, including Vz ROMs.
It's about what works for each person, in this case I am waiting for the next release, please don't get defensive because we had issues. They happened, no big deal, we have made decisions to move back to CM7.
I happen to think DZK has done a great job with CM10 and I will be moving back.

Oh I'm not being defensive. Sorry to come off that way. I just see that you guys are newcomers to the forums. A lot of newcomers have been posting about issues not understanding that our Droid X2 is not like other phones that get custom ROMs. Our CM10 is not really complete and most likely never will be because motorola hates us and doesnt want to unlock our bootloaders. If you guys are new to the DX2, I didnt want you expecting a full featured bugless ROM like, lets say the Galaxy Nexus would get. Even though its CM10, we are running it on a Gingerbread Kernel which will always cause issues. That, along with not being able to change or update the drivers doesnt help. Thats why I said even the next update will most likely have the same issues. Most of us just chose to deal with them.

I wasn't aware of the Motorola situation when I purchased the DX2, but quickly found out. I came from the Samsung world (Fascinate) as my last device and it seemed custom ROM's were very easy. With the DX2 it has been anything but easy. But for now really happy with the device overall and the CM10 ROM will make it great. The primary reason for my move back to CM7 was a call issue that seems to be well documented. If it isn't corrected with the new version of CM10 I will make adjustments and stick with it. Also the DX2 community here on XDA is great.
I haven't had the any call issues, but I make/receive very few calls
mostly texts and emails

Hey there -- just wanted to also say that I hope I wasn't coming off as a complainer (which probably meant I was!). I'm totally and absolutely grateful for all of dragonkiller's work on porting CM. I HATED my Droid X2 with BLUR -- and it has been a great joy to use since I switched to CM7.2.
I do wonder, though, that Jellybean requires a more powerful processor? CM10, outside of the sensitivity issue, felt slower in every way. I just may keep CM7.2 on this phone forever -- it's just a great ROM.
If JB felt slower to you then something is wrong. Did you install it from a clean 2.3.4 SBF?

Actually upgraded from CM7 to CM10 first time. Since moving back to CM7, I did an SBF with a clean install of CM10 and things are MUCH BETTER. Not going back at this point. This is only day two, but things are good. I did figure out that when I installed an app that CM10 did not like the screen started acting strange, but getting rid of the app and rebooting solved the issue.
I did end up with one strange problem, still working on it. I used Titanium to restore most of my apps, but wanted to do a clean install on Flash Player. So went in found the apk from my file mgr, selected "install", went to what I call the Android Install screen with two buttons at the bottom (Cancel & Install), tried to select the Install, nothing happened. I do have "Unknown Sources" checked in Security. I have tried other apk's just to test and none seem to work. Tried to move the apk's to the SD0 card, and that had no effect either. The strange thing, I had Flash Player working before going back to CM7.

[Q] Disabling back lit soft keys on screen touch

I recently flashed my Samsung Fascinate with PowerWashed Team's PWGB Version 2.0 (Beta 3). I'm terribly new to using custom ROMs, but I'm quite pleased with the results. I've only had one concern with this ROM regarding the back light on the soft keys. They light up every time I touch my screen or press a hard key.
I've attempted to find a setting for this in the OS and in CwM Voodoo Lagfix Recovery v2.5.1.x screen, but wasn't able to find such a setting (Again, I'm very green so it could be right under my nose and I simply don't know it.)
I also attempted to install myriad apps to keep the back light off on screen touch including:
Screen Filter (No effect)
Night Mode (No effect)
Light Flow Lite - LED Control (No effect)
Light Manager - LED Settings (This app actually stops the back light from coming on, however it's unpredictable and works >15% of the time)
I've also done a lot of searching on the matter. I've seen where others have stated the problem, but none where there was a solution or enough information for me to further investigate a way to fix this. It's also been complicated to find information due to a variety of search terms (soft keys, led, etc.) yielding results about the camera or other things that are unrelated to my issue coupled with my lack of direct knowledge on the matter.
I'd really appreciate any advice on either directly fixing this or a source of information so I may learn more from what is causing this behavior and fixing it myself. Thanks, everyone for all the time and effort you've put in for making things like this accessible to individuals like me. I can't tell you how much I appreciate it.
This behavior is a product of the kernel, and most people find it desirable. If you install the kernel control app nstools, you should see an option called cmled timeout, allowing you to set the led backlight timeout.

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately, the ROM I flashed has a stock kernel and doesn't offer this option. So, I suppose that's the first thing I need to address, but now I know where the problem lies! Thank you so much for your time and input, I'll put it to good use.
Are you saying the back lights light up even if you just touch the screen? That's strange, they only have ever lit up for me when I actually touch a soft key or hit the power button to wake the phone up.
Well good luck, I'm not sure what kernel is best for GB as I started flashing custom roms during ICS and I'm now on Jelly Bean and never going backwards.

Yes, exactly this. It is really odd and very bothersome when trying to read at night. Even if I use the volume rocker to turn the page the lights will come on. It's maddening. I'm currently looking at the kgb kernel, but I think the nstools led option isn't actually going to address this quirk. (Directly, I believe I will end up disabling the led altogether)
If you don't mind, what rom did you choose?(Ignore, I was on mobile and did not see your signature at the time)
How has the performance been? I'm interested in doing the same, but was afraid my fascinate wouldn't handle jb very well.
Well needless to say it's different for everybody when it comes to roms, sometimes your phone will have no problem running a certain rom where as someone else's might not even boot. As for myself I've been pretty fortunate and have been able to try any rom I've wanted to with success, and I'll give you a few of my thoughts on it.
If you're wondering about performance, well simply put JB blows everything else away and runs like a dream on the Fascinate. Once you spend a few days with it you'll never want to go back honestly. Even on our aging hardware, it runs amazingly fast, even without kernel performance tweaks.
Anyway, as far as roms go, if you're most concerned with stability and reliability then I would highly suggest CM10 (whatever the latest nightly version is). Of all the roms I've tried, it's by far the one that's given me the least hassle. That said, I'm quite fond of the tweaks offered in AOKP, mainly the voltage settings (for battery life) and the fact that it seems to vibe much better with Devil kernel than CM10 does. I've been running my current rom/kernel for a couple of weeks now, and I'm happy enough with how it's running to keep it as my daily driver for a while.
This isn't to say the GB roms aren't any good, because of course they are, but considering how nice JB roms run on our phone you'd be doing a disservice by not at least giving them a shot.

You sold me on the idea of JB. Flashed it today, and I love it so far. Plus, my soft key lights aren't constantly on! Win-win.
Thank you so much for the guidance. Your input helped turn a satisfactory experience with ROMs into a trully positive one.
Glad to hear you liked it man, I was reluctant at first too due to (at the time) no 'official' releases, but I'm glad I made the jump. I'm quite enjoying AOKP M1 and will probably stay on it for a long time. Which rom did you end up trying?

I was really impressed with your review, so I chose to go with the same rom. It also seemed like the most stable option and easiest for me to understand the installation procedure (very important for me since this is my only device and more than just my daily driver, it's my life line). I had been extremely hesitant to go to JB for fear of junking my phone up, but I'm really glad I took the extra risk. I just needed an extra bit of encouragement. Thanks again for all your input!
If you managed to install AOKP smoothly you can pretty much install any rom the same way, basically meaning wipe data and cache/davlik then flash whatever you want to. Luckily this phone happens to be very hard to break, and you'd have to do something pretty extreme to brick it. I highly recommend Titanium backup pro so you can just backup the apps you want, and restore them in no time when you're trying different roms. Also, I've been using some voltage settings that make battery life insanely good, so if you're interested in doing that let me know and I'll post them.

Regarding the key back light, since you are on aokp jellybean now if you still want to tweak the settings, goto settings and then device settings. There you can adjust the timeout on them

just a little hint: NEVER RESTORE SYSTEM APPS WITH TITANIUM YOU WILL GET BOOTLOOP

I've restored Nova before that was a system backup with no problems but I agree about anything else. Not sure what system apps anyone would even want to backup really

I've actually done that before just to see what happened (system settings) and it didn't bootloop, it simply didn't restore anything. Not that I mind re-setting everything after a clean install, just figured I'd try to save a little time

Nope not at all, just chiming in on what happened when I tried it. It should be a no brainer to anyone flashing roms to not restore system apps, even if they're new to it honestly

I know but it would surprise you I've had people complain because they flashed a i9000 ROM and it didn't work because the developer is stupid LOL
