Anybody know how to remove HTC "spyware"? - HTC EVO 3D

With all of the talk regarding this HTC spyware and loggers in the new update, how do we remove this? From reading Apparently it goes deeper into the framework than being just the icq. Any ideas?

not released to use. yey but evidently synergy knows how. its pretty jacked up that they are not sharing with the community this subject yet. hopefully yet being the key wording. hes already incorporated it into his rom. ..i would love more info on this as well. hopefully someone will rip his rom apart and figure out whats different.

Not quite sure how just the kernel can remove this. I have read that there is quite a bit of it embedded into the framework.

He already semi explained it in his thread and he hasn't even totally removed it from synergy himself. So its pretty jacked up for you to think he owes an explination while he is still trying to figure it out.

SteelH and flipzmode would be good to PM and inquire about. SteelH, I know that he is on the E3D/3vo/whatever you call it (OG EVO owner here). Flipzmode, I don't know if he got an EVO 3D but he managed to find and get rid of most of it. SteelH pretty much demolished all traces of Loggers and CIQ and everything in the OG EVO Gingerbread ROM release
Main thing is to sever the connection between your phone and HTC.
There is some in the kernel, so someone would need to strip it out of there too.

If what they say is true, everything is stored in 3 folders.
/data/system/appusagestats/
/data/system//dropbox/
/data/system/usagestats/
I checked these 3 and had loads of crap in them. I used root explorer to make them read only, and they have set empty since.

Install the kernel & then delete the 2 files out of /system/apps mentioned in the thread, there are more files to clean up but the .apk files actually launch the process.
I used root explorer to do the job.
Sent from my BEASTO 3D using XDA Premium App

Thanks for the tip.. I purchased Root Explorer deleted the files and set folders to read only also.

Though I'm not 2.3.4, this is pretty heavy info
Via root explorer, I see the files in /data/system. I changed permissions to read only anyway.
Also, 4 files "userbehavior." I changed to read only because I didn't like them either. I will report any negative outcomes. Otherwise, no news is good news from making read only.

Trick ota

Would it be possible to take the ota that has been downloaded and add our own framework that would be odexed and have it install some cracks?
We have the ota and why not take that and take out the firmware inside and replace with our own methods. Since we already have the framework hacked to unlock the hotspot feature we should be able to replace it via update then.
Just a thought. I'm not sure if it would work but we can try
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
The ota is signed. Modifying it breaks the signature.

Yeah, but we can't sign it? Or better yet, you can open a zip and push it in without breaking it. I've done that with classes.dex to hack the hotspot in framework.jar and no problems
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
Even if you had all the same files and just rearranged what order they appeared it would still break the MD5sum, There is a very very small change that modifying a file would produce a collision between the signed copy and the modified copy

Ok.... Just wish we could manipulate their ota...
What if we didn't rearange. Like if we hacked the framework.jar and kept that the same but just swapped out theirs for ours keeping all else intact. WiFi tether is a huge plus right now until full root comes
Sent from my PG86100 using Tapatalk
So do I, I haven't done any cooking or development myself. But I am almost done a physics and comp sci major and took a class on cryptography (the only reason I know how MD5 works) so I can follow along with some of the stuff.
I took the OTA myself, which people say is terrible, but the 2.3.3 will be rooted easy enough. It always is. I have faith in the devs.

Given what the guy said, I don't think that will work either. Time for some research!
I think it will still look for the changes and will probably become corrupted if it does find any.

I am not a programmer but my guess is they are looking at the OTA to see where they (HTC/Sprint) may have tried to patch a hole with the update and that is why they say dont run the OTA
Not going to happen.
Oh I know. For now I have run no ota. My main thing is root then hack stock WiFi tether. If I could do tether first, I would be a happy camper till the root happens

You mentioned you're familiar with MD5s, do you think you may be able to figure out a way to modify something without affecting the MD5? I'm sure it has to have some weaknesses being how small it is compared to the size of the file
No Root Needed

"3VO No Root Needed?"
which is my point exactly..."If HTC or Sprint can do it when the phone is locked, why can't we?"
But this genious "idea" was moved to the "General" section... a bit too early, because some "nay-sayers" started posting that they left there 3VO in the sand over night with a family of oysters.... and the next day not only was it rooted but they also got a pearl!

I still like the "idea" but everyone said it couldn't be done

Haus, I've seen roms being changed yet the md5 the same. Chubbz asked a good question. Is it possible to make the md5 set? As I recalled many roms being basically stolen then revamped but the core had the same md5.

so now they are removing CIQ? thats odd, oh well, thanks for the post. I shall check it out

dunno haven't looked into it yet myself. i assume its along the lines of the sensation update they got weeks ago, but dunno. And likely Treve will have the answer before most get a chance to look at it.
Hell i haven't even looked at all the files that were included in the OTA zip myself. I saw there was an OTA update for today and went ahead and downloaded it to post up for the devs.
Also remember if its still in there it might not be a big deal. The big issue with it all before was the fact that anyone could create an app and pull very important information off peoples phones b/c HTC/Sprint/whoever didn't secure everything well. Also they didn't have the "opt out" stuff working correctly or at all.
They could have at least fixed the missing mirror app, and the shutter sound in the camera. Were the only HTC phone that they removed those from.

I downloaded a Sensation full app dump and found a htchubsyncprovider.odex and .apk. I am guessing they will do no good unless we have s-off and root. I can post them if someone wants.
I tried popping some of the APKs in and installing them, but no dice.. noob fail... Will just have to wait for root and a stock rom, I'd like to get sense.com back on it!
If the skins work reguardless of resolution, I can load up a sense 3.5 rom on my desire right before I get the rezound and download all the skins and such and then just dump them off my phone. That is assuming I get get the GSM Desire Sense 3.5 rom booting with a cdma patch.

Not that would really use this much. But, it really annoys the hell out of me. Not as much as the lack of landscape homescreens though.

Curious. Is the hub something that will come in time with or without Verizon block? Via update or something? Or is it only possible with s-off? Do other carriers do this? I believe that the RZD is the only 720p HTC phone atm and because VZW told HTC to keep the Hub to themselves, HTC hasn't had any reason to make extra skins for the RZD. Here's hoping that we can use the skins from unreleased 720p HTC phones that don't get ****-blocked by VZW.

Yes, I have a thread of a handful of them on here, and bunch on the market. The reason most skins from other sense 3.6 builds don't work on the rezound is the Android version in the manifest. Once changed they will work as long as resolution is correct

Works just fine on my pre-ordered rooted LTEvo. The reason why its giving you guys the "Network Error" is because the initial ripped version of this app was not signed. There is a Signed .Apk for this app somewhere in the forums which would work "flawlessly". If incase its still messing up then fixing the permissions should do it.

ICS Skin [Request]

Are there any ICS skins available for Sense 4.0
Nothing but stock that I can find. I think it will take some time. Also, I don't know if there are tools out yet. I actually want to take a stab at it myself, so I tried to get set up with Eclipse and the OpenSense SDK, but had trouble getting the SDK to download. Not even sure if this would give me what I need either. If anyone with more knowledge on theming Sense 4 reads this, anything you can share would be greatly appreciated. Thanks!

It will happen. Just who knows when

The rate of development for this device is pretty high for how young it is. And with the momentum the other HTC One series devices are getting, we may be pleasantly surprised at how quickly it happens. Keep your fingers crossed gentlemen.

Thanks!

You need an HTC developer account I believe for access to the SDK. I also think its free to sign up for.

Yup, I do have one, and from what I've read, SDK manager should prompt me for those credentials, but instead, it just gives me an error, "peer not authenticated". Their are others out there having the same problem, some able to solve it, and some not. I went so far as to completely wipe my dev env and set it up from scratch, but to no avail. I'm kind of out of ideas at this point, but I'm going to keep researching and trying to fix it. Do you happen to know if the OpenSense SDK gives you any tools for making skins? I'm guessing that if mayfield and knightwolf didn't mention it it probably doesn't, since these guys are seasoned themers, but who knows...

Would love to see this come to fruition. If mayfield says it can't be done, that's obviously no good. Looks like we'll be waiting a while (for what exactly?)

Well what we need is a updated m10 editor so that the shared m10's can be opened and the imaged decoded so they can be edited(like clock flips and numbers, dock, etc....)
