Here are the root apps I use:
AdFree (blocks ads)
DroidWall (block Internet access for selected apps)
ES File Explorer (root file explorer)Samba Filesharing on Android (access SD card without wires over wifi)
Kerberos (unremovable anti-theft phone recovery)
Quick Boot (reboot phone)
Screen Grabber (screenshots)
Titanium Backup (backs up apps and app settings)
Wireless Tether (create a wifi hotspot)
The only app that I can think of that hasn't been mentioned is called Keyboard Manager.
It allows you to select two keyboards (one for portrait and one for landscape). I like to use swype portrait and the multi-touch one in landscape
wireless tether won't work for me and i rooted my phone. i'm a noob, yes.
it will not connect - it said something about not having kernal access initially.
the stock app does connect me, but doesn't allow me to get on the internet with it though - which is obviously a problem.
any sugs?
What program did you use to tether? And what are you running? Windows or MAC?
wifi tether, the one that guy showed in the youtube video. running windows 7 64 bit.
Adfree
Tether
Titanium Backup
Quick Boot
I'm running the same on 7 64 bit and will reconize until I try to use encryption. So not sure. Try without encryption.

I just downloaded Zumcast and love it. You download it to your pc than from market place download it to your phone and you have streaming access to all your documents, pictures and videos from you pc to you phone. Awesome.
Droid light- converts your camera leds to a flashlight.
Light Flow- allows you to control all your notifications with different colored led lights, vibrations and sound.
Now when i look at my phone when screen is black I can tell if its a missed call (yellow), gmail (green), calendar event(purple), Text mesg(white)
All are pretty nifty.
Also Mobo Player will allow you to play all types of video formats.
Keep them coming...what else is out there.

SuperDim and ChainFire3D
SuperDim and ChainFire3d are the apps I appreciate the most. The Photon screen is too bright at night and with no CM7 for it I almost returned it. Now with Superdim (for getting to 1/255 of brightness) and ChainFire3d (which I really only use for night mode red) I will keep it.
I took a look at this application and it asks to download cf3d driver but than warns you it may keep phonet from rebooting. Seemed like a bit of a hassle.

Edit: dropbox killed my link apparently, so here is another. Sorry about that peeps. One thing: this package contains amend update script, which is not supported by clockworkmod recovery 3.0 and above. If you have clockworkmod 3.0 and above, see lucas.scott's thread.. that package contains edify script updater, and should work with cwm 3.
http://db.tt/5lDE5de
I know many of you have tried to flash the original flashable zip installer for Hulu and Flash 10 (from lucas.scott's post here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939500) on EB01 and it hasn't worked (including me). That's because the update script and Binary that was included in that zip isn't compatible with voodoo lagfix turned on. If you turn voodoo off, the old installer will probably work fine. All I've done is removed the update-binary file and changed the update script so that it works for us now for EB01 voodoo. The update-binary/updater-script method of creating flashable zips is not as cross-compatible as the update-script format.. The flashable zip that I've included should be compatible with all other froyo builds for the fascinate, including DL30. And while I don't know this for sure, I believe it will work for most other phones on Froyo that use ClockworkMod Recovery as their recovery as well. If you know otherwise, please correct me.
Remember that anything you do to your phone is your fault. I'm not responsible for anything that goes wrong. There is a risk to anything you do when using any sort or recovery on your phone, and while this file is virtually harmless, it's always good to make a nandroid backup before modding your phone in any way. This is tested on DL30 and EB01 and works fine, but it never hurts to play it safe.
Also, the original Hulu.apk that was included in the flash_hulu_installer_v3.zip was version .3 of the Hulu app, and it did not allow for screen rotation. I replaced the Hulu app included in the zip with Hulu 1.0, which does allow for screen rotation and full-screen viewing. The separate install of Hulu.apk that lucas.scott attached to his post is not needed here.
Credit to Lucas.scott for finding this and pointing us to it. His thread is here:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=939500
And credit to nc2nc2 over in the epic 4g forums, who seems to have done most of the work getting this to work for the epic and, indirectly, the fascinate.
Thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=841472
Sorry if there's anyone I missed. If you know anyone else that deserves credit for the modding of the flash player and creation of the hulu app, tell me and I will add.

Don't go to hulu.com to watch hulu after flashing this in Recovery. You still can't watch hulu shows from your browser by going to hulu.com (at least not from stock browser). This zip installs an app that you open and watch hulu from. So instead of using browser, look in your app drawer for an app called Hulu. Open it and try watching something from within the app. Should work just fine then.

The other version worked fine for me on EB01. Just had to go into the market and uninstall updates for Flash.
After reading more comments on Lucas.Scott's original thread, it appears that the old installer works fine if you're not using voodoo lagfix. So you probably dont have voodoo enabled and thats why it worked. The zip I included, however, will work with voodoo enabled and disabled, so for those that have voodoo enabled, this is what you need to get the zip installed correctly.
Worked fine for me but took two installs? Thanks SO much for this!

Are you using the hulu app to watch hulu, or are you trying to watch hulu by going to hulu.com in stock browser? The app should let you watch hulu fine, but stock browser won't work because hulu.com can detect that you are on an android device (because stock browser does not allow you to fake your user agent like xscope or dolphin browsers will.. you just have to change your user agent setting in one of these browsers to mac or pc or something other than android), and as of right now hulu does not allow android devices to view flash videos on the site. That is why we need the hulu.apk.. it fakes user agent and allows us to watch anything from hulu.com. Some 3rd party browsers would probably work too, however.

Works great, watching Family Guy at work!
After doing the rounds installing Auto Nooter on several NookColors, I thought I'd make a quick list of apps that are essential to have for any new installation. I'll update this list as needed, but hopefully it will provide new rooted users a good jumping point to get a nicely functioning device.
This list is geared towards the new rooted NookColor user who runs stable builds / auto nooted builds. If you just bought a Nook Color and haven't rooted yet, go see Guide to Nook Color Rooting. Many of these apps below will fix problems with the stock rom.
The list isn't really targeted for the Nookie Froyo bootable SD card, so if you have one, take what you will.
If you're a hip person and run custom roms or the like, you may find these useful, too! (Using ClockWorkRecovery or other roms is currently not documented in the Nook Color rooting guide. Don't attempt unless you're able to fix if things break.)
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Home Switcher - Say you accidentally set your home to not Softkeys before you got a launcher? Go grab home switcher and fix it!
ADWLauncher, or other Home screen. You need some place to run everything from. ADW Launcher is a great first step, and you can always change later.
AppBrain - An app market add-on that manages your apps for you. Much more comprehensive than current market.
Fancy Widget - Gets you started with an all-in-one clock widget you can add to your launcher, since ADW doesn't give you one by default. Add Fancy Home from the widgets menu for the comprehensive widget.
SoftLocker - Keeps wifi from bugging during a sleep by forcing sleep mode to only turn off screen. Yes, this will drain more battery, but the NC battery is huge, and not having to forcefully reconnect at every wake is worth it for people dealing with bugs. You may have to relaunch SoftLocker at reboot to get it to work properly, but that's a one-time thing per session.
DolphinBrowser HD, Miren Browser, etc. - There are plenty of better web browsers than the built-in one, mostly supporting multitouch, tabs, and more.
Root Explorer - Costs $4 at the time of this post. If you're going to spend any money on an android app, this should be it. A file management tool that is a million times better than others, since you can do a lot of simple root activities on device quickly without needing adb. It's really a very good and important to have app.
Astro File Manager - Another good file manager, but doesn't support Root. It's really good for simple file system management where you don't want to run the risk of breaking anything. Also, it can somehow install apk packages in the worst of conditions where other installers fail.
Titanium Backup - good for backing up data, or wiping data from a buggy app that keeps crashing
Thumb keyboard - $1.65 at time of posting. possibly the best keyboard for the nook. Beautiful display, customizable key and row height. Make sure to suppress full screen in options. Any keyboard requires some setup process to install via Terminal. See Replacing the Default Keyboard (You can use the terminal app below. Your app location should be /data/app/com.beansoft.keyboardplus.apk . Copy that to /system/app and use NookColor Tools to set the keyboard. This will make the market think the app isn't installed, but it works!)
Disk Usage - shows a visual representation of disk space at a glance. great app for finding where your space went!
GScript - lets you automate scripted commands. good for devs.
Android Terminal - lets you enter commands directly. good for devs.
adbwireless - adb connections over wireless. very convenient.
ROM Manager - An important app if you're using one of the newer experimental builds running from ClockworkModRecovery. If you don't know what this is, forget I even said anything about this app... Or read this link if you're really interested in some cutting edge build stuff, but ignore it if you just want a working device and you've auto nooted.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------
Any apps you'd like to recommend for this list for the newbies out there? Post below what you think is important for people to have. This is for essentials, only, not optional apps like games or live wallpapers.
<reserved>
<also reserved>
Great list, here's a few more.
Miren browser - polished 3rd party browser with some awesome features. Slick menus and swipe to go forward and back sold me.
Thumb keyboard - possibly the best keyboard for the nook. I'm currently using the honeycomb skin and it looks fantastic. Customizable key and row height. Perfect for my huge thumbs.
Astro - file manager, compression handler, app installer, image and sound player....all around a badass app essential to any android device.
Also wanted to mention that root explorer is excellent. Forget logging on your computer to modify a file. I changed my nook hardware keys in a minute or so using root explorer. Great app.
Dont forget rom manager and the knowledge of howto make a nandroid with it
Nookie Froyo 0.6.8 (zoom2)/Tapatalk Pro
DROPBOX...Move .apks, music, movies, new flashables, ANYTHING, from phone, PC, or another Nook to yours. Should be 2nd on list beside Root Explorer (IMHO).

If you are on the stock os 1.1 (Eclair 2.1) you may want to look into Advanced Task Killer. If you are on Froyo or higher you shouldn't use this. Android will do a good job taking care of itself.
That said, I reboot my Android devices once every couple of days. I notice that keeps it running pretty well.
I actually have been using advanced task killer on froyo. Will that hurt anything?
I found WiFi Explorer (FREE) or Pro ($1.60) very useful to move files between my computer and NC without a cable.
Besides some of the other great apps people have said I would add 'Pulse' as an RSS reader. It looks so good and a great way to get your news!

Tasker turns a smartphone into a SMART phone.
I thought about getting it to try to enable a numeric lock code, and trying on my DX, it does work with one of the Locale plugins, but it's a bit flaky. I was gonna set the Nook so that if it was within range of my WiFi at home or at work, it would not have the lock code, but everywhere else, it would be enabled.

Yes....You are running froyo...android 2.2 and above optimizes running apps/services...don't mess with it...keep one around if you have to kill a rogue app on the fly, but dont let it run continuously....

Two great app to how!
I would only add two additional apps to this great list...
Sqlite Editor and Task killer, great apps to have on a newly rooted nook color!
I would strongly recommend the following:
Moon+ Reader for reading ebooks
Perfect viewer for comics
Epistle for taking notes (synchronises with dropbox)
I use ATK a lot on my DroidX with Froyo, if not it just keeps on getting slower and the battery drains quickly. What happens is some apps keep transmitting even though you closed them. For example, USA Today app I believe keeps sending fresh news articles even after you close the app as it's still running. So keeping it alive when you may not look at it until a few days later is wasteful of battery life and slows other stuff you want to do. Was it works with 2.1, I don't think so, I believe ATK is just as relavent now than then.
The app you really need to get after Angry Birds is Paper Toss.
File Expert?
I use File Expert for managing my files on my nook. It's free, has an option to run as root, and has a built in network interface that works out of the box. Plus having a back button right on the UI makes it easier than using any of the soft keys hacks... I can't post links, but the package is called "xcxin.filexpert" on the market.
I can't get the app "HDR Camera" to show up on the market from my rooted eris. I installed the eris market patch and Skype is showing up, so is more than 7 or 8 "US Bank" showing up, but not HDR Camera. Have they dropped out or something? Anyone know what might be going on?
Thanks...
Connortn
i have this one, its HDR Camera+ v1.64. latest version. works for me 100%.
no hdr camera apps show up for me in the market.
Rickyjohn... Do you know how I can get this on my eris? I tried the market patch mentioned here on another post that was suppose to allow me to see all the apps, rebooted, waited till after midnight as they said you need to do sometimes (something about the clock) and still cannot see HDR Camera. I can see it while visiting the market from my laptop, just not my eris.
Suggestions?
just download the apk i provided onto your laptop. sync your phone with your laptop. click and drag the apk onto the root of your sd card. then navigate to the file using a file manager program, i recommend "astro", free from market. click the apk and hit the button "open app manager" and install. and then u good to go! let me know how it goes
Oh! I didn't see the link at the bottom of your post
Will try when I get home.
Thanks...
If anyone is following this thread anymore -- what version of the market are you using and does it recognize the HDR camera app as compatible with the ERIS? I'm on condemndedsoul's cm7 rom. I saw this thread last week and downloaded the app from the market with no problems (cool by the way). Well, now the new market has been forced on me and i can no longer download in the market. It recognizes the app as installed, but if i uninstall it will not let me re-install it, there's just no install button. Same problem on a couple of other apps (facebook, documents to go, android agenda widget). The web market says that the HDR Camera app is not compatible with the device. Your help in diagnosing is appreciated!
In the past no HDR cameras shown up for me in the market. But when i seen your post I looked in the market and WTH!, i have one free and one pro available. So uninstalled the one i had and went in to the market and installed the HDR Camera+ and it works with no problems. Im running GSB v3.8 by workshed. My market version is 2.3.6. And in the web market both the HDR camera apps show up. Your Rom or market version maybe....but just guessing.
As it turned out, it was my rom. All fixed, but thanks for the response!

I just downloaded & installed HDR Camera from the market with no issues. Running Condemned v17 S2H.
Anybody get this app to work correctly? Mine just takes three of the same exposure and merges them, but it is supposed to bracket the three shots. Come to think of it, I don't think any eris cameras allow setting exposure, or am I crazy?

Hi all,
I just bought a Nook Tablet, and I'm already in love with the price and speed (I've loaded games like Shine Runner, and they run perfectly - I honestly didn't expect it!). I've spent quite a bit of time researching my issues and have not been able to fix some of them.
Anyway, my tablet came with 1.4.1 installed. I used this guide (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1466583&page=11) to root my Nook. I had no problems. I then installed Market, have the Google apps running, added Go Launcher EX, and everything runs fine.
Except for third party apps and other things. Here are my issues.
1) Can't run NTHiddenSettings.apk or similar apps - when I use the Package Installer I get an error message about not being able to run the application (For security reasons, your phone is set to block installation of applications not obtained from Android Market), then I'm dumped to the hidden settings. I try to change the 3rd party app setting, but nothing happens. I've read a bit about it and it seems it has to do with 1.4.1.
2) Can't set Go Launcher EX as the default launcher. Actually, I can, but nothing happens. The Nook launcher is always the default. I've tried to clear the settings on the application manager, and I do get the prompt regarding which launcher I want to use - but it always uses the Nook one. I read the Newbie FAQ and it seems the usual way to get to the launcher is by using "Search" and running the app manually - that works. I only want to know if I can use the "N" button to run Go Launcher automatically.
I'm about to downgrade my NT to 1.4.0, since I can't find any other way to fix my issues. Or is there a way to keep 1.4.1 and run 3rd party apps and change my launcher?
Thanks for any help!
As far as I know, 1.4.1 didn't bring any additional functionality to the device, just an attempt by B&N to close some doors they left open. In other words, you won't be losing anything by downgrading to 1.4.0. I'm sure if I'm wrong, someone will chime in to correct me.

Thanks for all your answers!
Here's what I did. My Nook is running almost perfectly well now. I can't see the SDCard on my PC, but hopefully I'll fix that pretty quickly.
1) Rooted using the SDCard procedure.
2) Installed the Gapps Zip file.
3) Used this procedure: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1473973 in order to be able to load 3rd party apps. Success!
4) Ran NTHiddenSettings and enabled USB debugging, etc.
5) Installed HomeCatcher.
6) Installed the one click install for CWM.
Now my Nook is rooted, has GoLauncher EX as its default, and is ready with CWM. I can't be happier. Almost everything I could ever want out of a Galaxy Tab for far less money! Thank you all

I've been trying to upgrade my 16GB NT to CM9 with limited success. Somehow the nightly builds just kept boot looping on the NT. I have gotten a solid release of my HP Touchpad. I got hold of the alpha CM9 0.05.1 version and finally got a good install which booted completely and worked OK except for the video acceleration causing Netflix and YouTube to give blank screens.
So I tried to go back to old root which had both B&N and ADW launched. I tried several methods which looked successful while I was using the CMW zip installs but they all resulted in a reboot into CM9 alpha. I have found a method to get me back to B&N/ADW (Veronica's Ribbon Root download link HERE) but I also stumbled on an SD card version of CM7 alpha final image from TEAM-B which worked great!
Well, I wanted an internal install version so I wouldn't be tied to the SD card boot and found TEAM-B's BETA version dated 20120713 for the CM (aka acclaim). I been working on it for several hours and many apps. This beast is really good. See the thred here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1481826.
Thanks TEAM-B for a really solid platform.
Testing update
Everything works as expected.
Netflix and YouTube work.
Email works.
The browser works really great. Much better than it did under ADW.
The Play Store is great as always.
The default music player works well. I also have tried Real Player Beta which also works well. My only complaint is fixing 'unknown artist' where I can't find a way to edit the artist name.
For your own downloaded videos, the default video player is great. I've also tried MxPlayer which also works well.
A really neat feature is the USB drive setting. If you have the device connected to your PC via USB, it doesn't automatically lock your device out. You need to select the up arrow in the circle on the status items (4th from the left), then select 'USB connected', and hit the 'Turn on USB storage' to get the drives visible to your PC (I'm running Windows 7 64 bit).
My VOIP app does not work since it has a problem getting the microphone active. The puzzling thing to me is that the Sound Recorder works. So it's not really the microphone per se.
Under the > Settings > Location & security settings > Change screen lock, you can set a lock code similar to the 4 digit code under B&N. You can also do an alpha numeric password instead of a simple 4 digit number if you'd like. However since you may need to enter it often whenever the timeout hits, I'd suggest keeping it simple.
I've not been able to break it yet.
It is rock solid. Anyone game for the challenge of finding a bug?

I always have to connect wifi manually after reboot (SD version) - anyone else get it to come on automatically?
But yes, ITA it's been very stable overall and a great job from Team B, especially with fixing hardware acceleration. Thanks again!

I have to turn my wifi on manually each time, too. I'm running the internal version on my NT16.
But seriously stable. Probably the best overall ROM I've used on any device in the past two years. Kudos, Team-B!

I had the wifi problem with the alpha version and also the first install of beta but when I went back to CM7 after trying CM9 I haven't had any problems with the wifi since.

I do miss the extras of cm9, but YouTube and Netflix work on cm7 and its rock solid so far for me!

I agree!!! I crashed my partitions while messsing with rim manager. If it weren't for CM7 I would have a 200$ paperweight!

.
I do not have the knowledge of the android developers, but my understanding is that @ShinnAsuka is correct. Sorry to say the 'version' of the chip inside does not contain the needed circuits. That is what I read.
