[Q] evo3d mhl and no video/audio output to lcd tv. - HTC EVO 3D

ok, so I connect the cable/adaptor to my tv/evo3d and get nothing. I tried the mirror app I had on my og evo and it doesnt work. All i wanna do is watch netflix and youtube on my tv from my phone. Its a factory htc mhl adaptor and I know the hdmi cables are good and the tv works with my ps3 on the same hdmi port it just wont display from the phone. Im rooted and running the gbsense-e3d-deck-0.2 rom. Im thinking im just a noob and cant figure out a setting somewhere? so I come here and ask the almighty gurus for some type of direction, because my head is spinning and I havent found much info on the mhl/evo3d mirroring when searching google, any help is appreciated.

Do you have it plug into an electrical outlet as well? Its has to be plugged to the phone,tv and electricity to work

Along with having power plugged in, I also had to reset the phone for it to connect. Took a while for me to figure that out. Maybe didn't have enough memory available.

sheesh, I cant believe I didnt check that first! It was the power not being plugged in. Sometimes its the simple stuff that gets overlooked! Thanks

Ha Ha nice one. i got the cable this morning and was cracking because i couldnt figure out how to work it.

Only the stock charger will work. No USB, no 3rd party charger. Remember, stock charger.

Yeah found that out earlier. I use the usb on my xbox to charge the phone and had to plug in mhl to get it going. Love playing games on big screen.

Yeah. The quality on video is kinda grainy sometimes, but games are solid

Not true. I can run it from the USB on my desktop media center PC next to my 37" LCD.

I want to add, for anyone else having problems or will later. I had a problem with this too once and once I reinstalled the stock transfer app for data transfer it worked again too - if you have the bloat removed. Not exactly sure why but what worked for me.

But I tried USB, twin USB, A/C charger and no good. Only stock charger works for me.

I have an EVO 3D GSM, a Micro USB TO HDMI MHL ADAPTER and a Samsung LE40C750 3DTV LCD but i can not get it working...
i tried the stock wall charger and the one comes with the mhl adapter (both have 1 Amp output)...
The TV recognizes that there is something plugged in but i get no video and no sound... i allways get "No Signal, Please Check the Power and Datacables correctly plugged in..."
Do i have to enable the hdmi output on the evo 3d? is there a special app needed? hmm
EDIT: i also tried it on my hdmi capable LCD Monitor... also "no signal"...
as i read the phone should notify me with: "HDMI video out connected" but i never does
i am using Villian ROM
EDIT2: ok i have tried to install a stockrom: 1. i've made a nandroidbackup before that 2. tried to install a stock rom (but failed) 3. did factory reset in bootloader and restored nandroid backup
4. rebooted the phone and i dont know why... now i can use the MHL adapter and see the EVO screen on my TV !?!?!? but why?

I had the same problem: TV recognized the connection but said check cable.
For me it worked just to restart the phone (stock rom) while connected to the mhl-adapter (not turn off and on, there seems to be a little difference).
Maybe this helps others to save a lot of time for not having to backup the whole configuration.

HDMI out works sometimes, what's up with that?

Just like the post says my hdmi works sometimes and most of the time it doesn't. I had it working last night watching nerflix and it just stopped, same thing happened today. I am running a Zone23 Rom and bcblend 02 kernel. The mhl adapter I am using is from T-Mobile. Does this happen to anyone else, is the a solution I can try? I just ordered the htc adapter to try that and I have already switched hdmi cars to see if that was it and it wasn't. Any help I would appreciate.

did you connect the power cable as well?
Yes, I know I didn't mention it but yrs the power cable is attached and working, I guess it was my fault for not clarifying it better, it use to work whenever I plugged it in not it is hit in miss with a mostly miss.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
sounds like a loose connection. probablly a faulty hml adaptor.
Also, sometimes when it kind of was acting like it wanted to work it would cut on cut off like someone was flicking a light switch on and off.
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Well I ordered a HTC mhl adapter and the same thing happen. So I ended up restoring a rooted stock rom, re-applying all my apps, backing up my new setting, wipeing and re-installing my Zone 2.3.4 ROM and re-applying my new setting and it still didn't work.....LOL
But it now works on my 55 inch vizio but not my 46 inch Sony in my bedroom where I would use it the most.
I don't know what the problem is with the Sony because it use to work flawlessly but now it doesn't even read it. I know its the tv because I have swapped everything else, hdmi cable, charger, and mhl adapter. If anyone knows what may have caused my tv to stop reading my mhl adapters please let me know?
Sent from my PG86100 using xda premium
Your TV port probably failed. I know hdmi ports look robust like a usb port but they really aren't.
Well my tv has 5 ports and none of them are working with the mhl adapter but the still work with my DVD player though.

Old thread but I may be able to help others.
I have a generic HML adapter from ebay and I found that you need to connect things in the correct order to make it work reliably. I had the best results following these steps.
1. Connect power to the adapter
2. Connect the adapter to the phone
3. Connect the HDMI cable to the adapter
With the stock rom I found a reboot of the phone between step 2 and 3 sometimes helped but generally it was not needed. With the leedroid rom I using now I've never needed to reboot.
Unfortunately my 52" Samsung LCD (2008) has no audio but my 24" Samsung LED (2011) works perfectly every time. I got audio to work 2x on the 52" but I can't for the life of me figure out how.
Just to further update....
I found a firmware update for my 52" Samsung TV on their website. After applying the update I found the HDMI to slightly more reliable with my audio issues but it still did not correct it 100%. I have audio issues 1 out of 4 times now so by my best guess the TV has to comply with the newer HDMI specs in order to operate with the MHL adapters.
Hopefully this helps someone out there.
Appreciate the tip, so how does one update their tv

[Q] HDMI OUT not working?

So, i bought a tmobile mhl adapter plug, and i attempted to plug the microusb, and hdmi cord into the adapter. when i do, my phone tells me HDMI connected- play a video or a slideshow to display, blah blah. anyway, nothing shows up on my tv, it states weak or no signal.
I'm on the latest synergy sense rom.
When i play a video with like youtube, it resizes it to 4:3 instead of 16:9 on the evo 3d, and the sound stops playing but it doesn't display on the tv :/
anyone have any fixes? does synergy not support hdmi out?
Just make sure you have the charger plugged in to the adapter. Do a reboot in your phone and try again.
Had the same prob with leedroid gsm.
See how you get on.
did you plug power cable into the HML adaptor as well?
yep
Yep, everything is plugged in properly, it tells me on my 3d that HDMI is connected. my sound turns off, but nothing displays on my plasma :/ the hdmi cord works since i use it with my apple tv 2, and obviously the adapter works since the evo 3d detects when an hdmi cord and power cable are connected. just wondering if it's the rom. i'm going to try and reinstall the rom to see if it fixes.
did you select the correct hdmi port on your tv?
Yes, I selected the right hdmi port, I even moved the hdmi cable to other ports and checked those as well.

Anybody using HDMI out??

I bought the official HTC adaptor for this and I can't get it to work.
I plugged power into it, used a brand new HDMI cable and nothing works at all.
The first time I plugged it in, an icon came on up top saying HDMI out but nothing showed on the TV screen.
Now, when i plug it in the phone starts charging but nothing else happens at all.

There are a couple members with the MHL adapter. You might just have a faulty accessory because to my knowledge none of them have issues.
MHL adapters do not work on their own, you have to plug a micro USB cable into the side to power it.

Probably find a cheaper one out there, but this one worked for me.
Just out of curiosity, what would be the purpose/need to hook HDMI up to your phone? (And no, I am not being snarky or a d*ck, just curious as to what it's used for...)

You can plug the phone into an HDTV and show pictures or play movies at their full resolution on the screen. This phone can probably play HD video better than my (aging) laptop can.

Not sure if you tried disconnecting all of the cables and reconnecting them, but I'd give that a shot if you haven't already. A battery pull may not hurt either. Could also be a bad adapter or phone. Saw a few similar issues in the accessories section.

Did you choose the output in whatever application you are playing the source from? In the standard sense player, for example, there is a button that says output right next to the beats logo. I have heard that the option "TV" appears there when you are connected via HDMI or wifi to a televison.
For me, as soon as I plug in the adapter to the phone an hdmi icon appears in the notification section and the display shows up on the tv.

Yea, mine did that the very first time I plugged it in but it hasn't done it since.
The adaptor has to be defective, I have read a good percentage of them do not work correctly.

I'm using the cheapest one Amazon sells and it works great. I remember seeing someone else had a defective phone. You may be in the same boat. I'd try another adapter and if that doesn't work I would return the phone(exchange)

This is somewhat counter-intuitive, but the Samsung MHL adapter works extremely well. Oddly enough it works better on the Rezound than it does on the Infuse or Epic Touch 4G.
All that to say, yeah, you probably have a bad adapter.

Mine was getting the HDMI logo at the top but no output I was useing the USB OWM rezound wall plug that came with he phone. Well I used a better one i had here and now HDMI out works great... It just will not work with the HTC rezound wall plug power.. even works off of my PC's usb power just not the OEM one.

Funny, that thread was the first suggestion in the "Here are similar threads we found:" dialog when I created this thread.
Anyways, my question is pertaining to the last couple posts in that thread. They were talking about the official HTC AC M500 12-pin MHL adapter. I know it's the official MHL adapter for the Amaze, but what I'm wondering is why I'd spring for that adapter, when for just a bit less, I can get the official HTC AC M490, which is the 5-pin version? Not only is it cheaper, but it'll work with any phone that has a standard 5-pin USB/MHL port.
If you've tried the 5pin then you know that it disconnects almost all the time. Plus the charging while plugged in doesn't work too well. I have the 12pin and I don't have to sit there with a steady hand while connected to the tv and don't have to worry about the battery discharging while watching a movie from my sdcard. I prefer quality over quantity.

Yeah, I haven't tried any of them. I guess I've not had any problems with standard 5-pin usb charges staying in place, but perhaps the MHL adapter causes more strain on the connector. If I get the 5-pin it'd also work for my girlfriend's evo3d.... choices
It will work if the EVO 3D uses mhl. Don't get me wrong the 5pin will work but you will start to get really frustrated if the plug or phone or table is slightly moved and you lose connection. Lol

I use a 5 pin your right about the charging watched a movie plugged in the whole time batt was at %20 at the end. Wrong about the connection though you must of had a bad one. I can pick up the phone wiggle it around and never loose the picture.

What I have found out regarding which is the proper adapter, and you are correct it's the HTC AC500 12-pin Ext-USB to HDMI MHL adapter (its the same MHL adapter that the HTC Flyer tablet uses). The micro "Ext-USB" connection and the fact that its twelve pins instead of a 5 pin connector do indeed make a difference in terms of functionality, quality, and performance. Although, that not to say that other MHL adapters with 5-pin connectors like the HTC AC490 adapter won't work on the Amaze, cause they do in terms of displaying video on your TV. However, the 5-pin adapter wont charge the unit while its plugged in, even if you have an MHL adapter that has its own AC power source. According to HTC that is the case at least, and from reading other comments, I assume that HTC isnt bullshitting.
I was also told by the HTC rep via email, that when you use the HTC AC500 12-pin Ext-usb MHL adapter, it actually allows the Amaze 4G to open up or enable a feature where the phone acts more like a playback remote for viewing videos and photos, and so basically it doesnt only just mirror image the display you see on the devices screen on the TV (in other words, it enables an app where you can select the file you wanna view from the app on the Amaze, and then you can use your phone to control the playback of the videos/files etc). I also found out, not only does using the correct MHL adapter enable some pretty cool functionality & features, it also will greatly improve the HD image and sound quality being sent to your TV. All the while, the 12-pin adapter will charge your phone in the process ...
For some people, I guess, those additional features and the improved image & sound quality won't be a deciding factor for them, and will go for the cheapest adapter they can find on eBay. For me however, I'd personally rather spend the additional $20-30 for the official HTC AC500 12-pin adapter.
... Only problem now though is, I can't for the life of me seem to find them anywhere, but you can get them direct from HTCs webstore. Only problem is HTC doesn't operate their official online Accessories Store in Canada ... and neither the US or nor the UK stores will ship items here. Poo

Sorry, I don't browse the accessories to often. But to answer your question. It does have a different feature...only on stock. It seems some roms remove the feature. But its no biggie. It still plays really good HD.

couldnt ever get the 5-pin to work with my Sensation before & now on either my Amaze or Flyer (but i know it works cuz it does on my bros One V) so im selling it....picked-up a 12-pin from fleabay for $15
my ? is, which ROMs will support this feature (or which ones do not)? im using EnergyROM with the Amaze & OneXXL with the Flyer
update: 12-pin working great without the need for power to be plugged-in. sold the 5-pin OEM Adapter [73H00394-00M] for the same $20 i bought it for so ended up making $5 out of the whole thing

Menotek MHL adapter
I'm late to the thread but I thought I'd add my experience with a similar MHL adapter. I got one by Menotek from Amazon [sorry, can't post links yet]. Short story is that it works, but far for perfectly:
- it does not charge the Amaze while it is connected to my TV via HDMI
- if you unplug it and plug it back, it will not detect the phone and TV connection anymore. I need to restart the phone in order to re-establish the link
- it works great for low res graphics such as youtube, fpse (PSX emulator)
- it sucks for hi res such as netflix movies
While my main use for this MHL adapter is to play PSX games on my phone on by big screen TV, I am disappointed that it doesn't give high quality video from my netflix app.
I wonder if I should buy the aforementioned 12-pin MHL adapter which is also available from Amazon. Does anyone have personal experience with this adapter on their Amaze?
I got mine off ebay for about 8 dollars and its never disconnected on me, I can even play games on it... works great!

Dont remember which seller they were one of the top rated sellers though and the mhl adapter supports 25-75hz. It was just one of the many 8 dollar ones on ebay... Idk how many pins it is, its just a regular micro usb port that plugs into the phone and it charges. Never acted up on me on stock on and still works fine on Speed Rom 7.8. These new postings for mhl adapters on ebay for 8 dollars claim to be capable of outputting 3D but in reality that is a requirement of 120hz. I don't know if I can believe that (well maybe it can output 3D but not good 3D video)
I havent tried netflix on my phone to the tv yet, last I remembered the quality wasn't that great even streaming to a phone and watching family guy... Is there anyway to adjust or even trick net flix into streaming higher quality for tv use?
I just got a Sanoxy MHL cable and it works great I have a USB to micro USB from my computer plugged into it and the phone charges faster than it drains. I tested disconnecting the phone from it and then reconnecting to see if the TV would pick it back up and it did. I had Bluetooth GPS and WiFi going while running a linux rom over the TV browsing the internet for about a half an hour and my battery percentage was even higher when I was done.

How well does the battery hold up with local video, streaming, gaming?
I haven't been doing much gaming lately and I don't have netflix anymore and the only videos I have on the phone are short clips for showing friends, so I'm not sure but if I get Netflix back or decide to game out on this thing I'll let you know.

[SOLVED] Can't get OTG to work

My Evo 3D won't detect anything i plug into it via OTG cable. i tried with Buttered Toast Kernel, Mac Kernel, and Sarin Gas Kernel.
Here's what i did: opened Kernel Tuner, granted root access, went to misc and toggled OTG on. Apply and then closed the app. plugged OTG cable, plugged something else (mouse, gamepad, etc.), doesn't do anything. unplug, go to Kernel Tuner, check and i see OTG toggled off. i toggle it on and the same keeps happening. plus, sometimes the charging light turns on. but still no go. what should i do?
My phone: CDMA, Rooted, S-off, Eng Hboot.
Thanks for the help

My phone: CDMA, Rooted, S-off, Eng Hboot.
Thanks for the help

On htc phones the Usb OTG works only with an external power-supply. Samsung phones are able to provide even power, so you simply connect mouse/usb sticks/ keyboard and it will be powered up by the phone itself..with HTC no, you need to connect something that is powered by batteries or by external source..for example you can connect an USB hub only if you can connect it with a transformer to the electric line of your house (that's what I mean http://img.dxcdn.com/productimages/sku_33189_2.jpg)
Ohh so that's it. Wow. Can't believe I never heard of that before. I even thought for a moment that my phone was broken. Thanks for the helpful info. I guess its time to look for a power supply for my hub.

You could also get a powered OTG cable on Ebay for a few bucks. Thats what I did.

I already have an otg cable. Though mine doesn't have a power port. I tried to see if I could find any cable that fits in my USB hub's power port but had no luck. So I would have to buy one. But now that I think about it. A powered otg cable would be better. Since I would have to use the hub at all times otherwise. Hmm... I don't know. I guess I'll go for whichever is cheaper. Or if not I'll see if I can mod my otg cable to add power port to it.

Theres a very detailed guide with pics from @mpgrimm2 that shows you how to modify a standard usb cable and turn it into a homemade, powered otg cable.

Thanks for the shout out on my thread. I actually think @ramjet73 Evo3d OTG Tips & Tricks thread (vs my HP Touchpad thread) where I originally added my notes has better "cable" pictures and links to purchase premade items on ebay (if still active).

Thanks for correcting me. I knew there were 2 threads that I was looking at back when I considered doing this. But search was down so I just went to your profile because I remembered you were the main contributor of info. Great guides, although I bought 1 on Ebay, I still want to try to make my own. I have the tools, and you supplied the knowledge! Thanks again

Took me a few hours but its done. I took a broken USB charger I had laying around. I just attached red and black from said cable and connected it to the red and black from the otg cable. I took that long because I was being really careful with the cuts. Its interesting that when I disable otg in Kernel Tuner the plugged otg cable charges the phone. I thought it wouldn't.
Anyways, a new problem came up. I can't get neither my Ps3 controller or mouse to work. Everything I plug gets detected by USB host controller, but nothing works. It even detects it all simultaneously trough on the hub. The only thing I have been able to do was pairing my Ps3 controller with the SixAxis controller app. Its strange since I tried this same cable and peripherals on a Xoom and they worked just plug and play.
Is this because of the ROM not supporting it? Or is it the Kernel or something else? I'm currently using CM 10.1 w/ Sarin Gas Kernel. I'm going to try with a different ROM/Kernel but just wanted to know if its that not all Roms support it.

I'm actually on the same ROM and kernel myself. I tried to use OTG a while back, and it didn't seem to work. So I flashed Buttered Toast and OTG worked. That is the only kernel that has always had working OTG for me. But I prefer the performance of Sarin Gas so I flashed back to that.

I just gave it a shot and had the same results as you. I guess I'm gonna stay with buttered toast for now
Thanks for all the help
