I'm an ol' windows geek and an Android noob. I rooted my Evo 3D and had a few bumps during the root process (still during beta) and got S-off and able to run all my rooted apps no errors - but, every time I try to apply any zip (using CRM v4.0.1.5 ), I now get:
Installing: /sdcard/download/zipnamehere.zip
Finding update package...
Opening update package...
Installing update...
Installation aborted.
The first time I saw it was when I was trying to add SU to my phone -but - SU was on there and I was able to update it so I ignored the error.
Now, I'm trying to apply radios, etc and none will work.
I have tried downloading to Win7 x64 workstation, XP netbook and copying - have tried downloading directly - have tried praying and downloading - all (so far) to no avail
I was able to apply the latest deodexed ROM no problem (THANK YOU!) but i'm stuck and since i'm in the short-stack near-side of the bell-curve, I'm hoping maybe someone smarter than I can give me some things to check an' try...
As always, I'm very grateful for all the time and assistance!
(yes, i'm selecting zip, yes, i've verified checksum)
Cheers!
Try using TWRP recovery from TeamWin. I think the clockwork recovery is a port and may have some bugs. I believe most of the bugs have been worked out in TWRP. Worth a try anyway. It's a bit different than CW but I think as you get used to it you may like it better. I advise to never use Rom Manager app and flash everything manually from recovery anyway.

TWRP, eh? - It's something new to try tonight... I'll post back either way once I've got the kids to sleep and have a moment to focus
Many thanks for the quick reply and the information!
Cheers!
Okay - one more piece of the puzzle: installed TWRP and told it to doa signature verification... the md5 check is fine but even so, it's telling me the signature check is failing - for the sake of argument - if i assume the file is good, what would cause my phone to be unable to correctly verify file signatures?
and so far - very impressed with TWRP - thanks for pointing me in a proper direction!

Hello Everyone
I know, there are many How-To's and ways to achieve what I want. unfortunately non of those I tried have worked.
My goal. I want to unroot my Hero, to send it back to RMA, because the usb controller is not working. And this is the second biggest Problem atm.
All the How-To's to unroot the device an install the original RUU or at least most of them include the use of the USB function. (creating a gold card 4 example or flashing a different bootloader)
To the USB Controller. It is hopeless. I tried everything. I even set up a Linux VM but where ever I plug it in, the system won't recognise my hero. They don't even recognise something.
Lucky me, the Hero is still able to charge the battery.

Ok lets give some details on the actual situation.
I'm able to boot to HBOOT/Fastboot (volume down)
I'm able to boot to Clockwork Mod Recovery 2.5.0.7 (home)
Right now, it's restoring the system to FroydVillain 1.7.1, because i formated the boot partition (After 5 hours, I was tired and did one big mistake)
> The restore worked. I have my old System again.
What I tried to do
1. I downloaded the actual RUU, ran it, got the rom.zip out of it.
2. Booted into Clockwork Mod and tried to install from zip, where i got [Error Message 1]
3. Renamed the rom to update.zip and tried to install toe "normal" way. Also got the same [Error Message 1]
4. Renamed the rom into HEROIMG.zip, ran HBOOT which checks the zip and led me to [Error Message 2]
Error Message 1

I downloaded the actual Hero RUU three times from the website, in case something went wrong while dl.
I got an older RUU from a xda thread and tried it with tis one.
I am not able to create a goldcard, because you have to connect the phone via usb to a computer.
Well Any help is much appreciated.

Hey,
really sh*tty that usb ain't working..
having trouble from time to time myself, got a suggestion for ya though
1) find yourself a rom that is very close to a stock rom (suggesting stock WWE,
as can be found on this forum, mr bang, stock wwe rooted)
http://www.romraid.com/paul/hero/upd...5.5-signed.zip (maybe an option)
2) make sure it doesn't have a customized kernel (or flash the stock one )
3) make sure it doesn't have apps2sd
4) use universal androot => UNROOT
5) delete busybox from your phone
guess this should get as close as it can be to a stock sense rom
(meaning unrooted and minor customizations
grtz, [email protected]
Hey mattnmd
Thank you for the hints!
Actually I could not download the ROM because the link seems "wrong" but it pointed me in the right direction.
I found e repacked Stock ROM (1.5) which I was able to flash.
So... My base system is ok for the moment. BUT my recovery is not
There is still clockworkmod recovery installed and it won't let me install updates.
Now in the next step I need a way to flash a different recovery (the original) without the use of USB.
androot does work. btw =)
Thanks a lot

Put the Hero like stock without USB
Is there a solution for this already?!! I've exactly the same problem - USB doesn't works, not even for charge! And I need to make it stock-alike in order to send it to warranty. I managed to install the stock ROM but still, there's the AmonRa Bootloader installed... I created a goldcard without USB using this: w ww.mikesouthby.co.uk/2010/08/htc-desire-creating-goldcard-using-mac-or-linux/
but, when I try to apply the HEROIMG.zip trough Hboot, it says "Main version is older"
What am I missing?! Is the installed radio too recent for the stock image I'm trying to install?!
I have no solution jet. But I'll write as soon as I see a way.

HTC Desire S - xda app
Worked for me!!!
Well, I found a way to solve my problem! I needed to put my GSM Hero as stock as possible (without root/custom ROMS/AmonRa/etc) without USB... The only solution, as far as I've read is to flash using a GoldCard the zip file from the RUU *.exe from HTC. I manage to create the GoldenCard without USB but when I tried to flash, it would say "Main Version is Older" after checking the HEROIMG.zip . It finally worked when I used this particular RUU version: RUU_Hero_HTC_WWE_2.73.405.38_WWE_release_signed_No Driver.exe from XDA thread #559622. Give it a try
Finally done
Hey dusturn
You are my (HTC) Hero
I just made the goldcard, and installed the new/old image (2.73.405.38) The Device got the old cupcake 1.5 on it and I was not able to get into recovery anymore!
It finally seems to be ok! Thank you very much!

How did you make goldcard without USB? I have the same problem but cannot find a solution.
(i made sure to do a backup)
Let me sum up what I have done:
I've managed to follow a guide on a wiki(I lost the link however, since I ATTEMPTED to give up on this) that involved me downgrading my firmware, then do some steps to install cyanogen 1.4. Afterwards, I got to step that required me to rename some file to update.zip. I followed that step and noticed my computer didn't convert the file to a zip file(it remained as a img file) but continued anyway while finding that odd.
Afterwards, cyanogen tells me that it cannot find the zip file. I've search most of google and a bit of this site, and i've seen various solutions that failed me such as:
-renaming the update.zip to update
-using android sdk(which i have no clue on how to use)
Anyways, finding out that I was foolish to do all of this without prior knowledge, I decided to go back to my original firmware. However, on the phone's reboot, cyanogen came up again for some reason, and didn't let the update be applied.(I don't recall the error)
Anyways, I selected reboot and got to my phone's main menu then some music started playing automatically. I should note, before I did the update, I placed all of my backed up data(while still having the original copy on my pc) on my phone so it might've been some music that the original owner had. Now, on the menu, i'm getting this error "The process android.process.acore has stopped unexpectedly. Please try again." all the time. Since this error constantly pops up, I can't do anything.
So if you managed to read my long and boring story, let me ask one question:
How do I get my phone back to normal if rooting is impossible at this point?
First question is what firmware is your htc magic currently on? And by reading everything I guess your phone isnt rooted...

It's on 1.5 currently. Also as a little update:
I fixed the "not being able to do anything on the menu" problem by doing a factory reset. Afterwards, I learned the SDK a little bit more and have the tools, pc driver, and fastboot on my pc. However, i'm getting the error:
FAILED (remote: not allow)
Just a bump. I need all the help I can get on this one. Even a premade update.zip would help me GREATLY.
One last bump. I promise.
I was sitting a work when I noticed the OTA notice come up, I planned to hit differ so that I could check my order of operations on how to handle this. In my haste to prove I really got the OTA notice I hit a screenshot which closed the notice. I assumed it automatically hit differ when I pressed the home button. I returned to the phone after finding here I should S-Off before the update, only to find it on the "Android system recovery" screen.
I am faced with the following.
Code:
- Reboot system now
- USB-MS toggle
- Backup/Restore
- Flash zip menu
- Wipe
- Partition sdcard
- Mounts
- Other
- Format data.system.cache Ext4 | Ext3
- Developer menu
- Power off

Copying fotaBoot to /data/system for customize reload...
Verifying current system...

I am not running a rom, I was stock rooted with HTCDev unlock and I do believe Amon-Ra recovery though I admit I haven't touched that aspect of things since February. I wanted to wait for the OTA to make any bigger changes than adding a tether app I could really use. Am I screwed? Do I tell it to reboot and hope for the best?
At the time of this post I could not find anything for someone in my situation. Sorry if it is in the wrong area. I lurk instead of posting 99% of the time.
EDIT: I told it to reboot and it spit me back to the home screen I am used to, still old software. Doing a little more reading I have established this is normal in cases with a recovery installed.

I don't believe you can accept OTA with AmonRa. Stock recovery is what it installs through. Could be wrong tho.

Thanks all! This was my exact situation as well.. AmonRa was the only real change I made since picking up the phone, holding out for ICS!
So let's go waaay back to the basics.. anyone have a link to how I install that stock recovery? Sorry for the n00bness.

I think you would just be better off to install the full .12 RUU. Links are everywhere here but since you just ran stock rooted you can still root it I believe. If its not rootable install the full .10 RUU and root that. The differences between the two are minor and that way you will have the updated firmware and radios.
It will wipe data though.

Rename the file to ph98img.zip. Reboot into bootloader and select yes to update. It will install the stock recovery.
To start off with, I'm just wondering, do you ALWAYS have to enter a CAPTCHA when posting to this forum. That will drive me nuts!
Anyhow, I am looking to install Cyanogenmod on my Samsung Galaxy Mega 6.3 (GT-I9205) and I haven't been in the business of modding an Android phone in a LONG long while. The videos on YouTube are extremely lackluster in walking you step-by-step if you haven't been in it for a while. I don't just want to install the ROM and call it a day, I want to understand what the process is first, create a full image of my phone first in case anything goes wrong and AFTER that point I want to install a Cyanogenmod.
So, from what little bits and pieces I have gleaned from the Internets, I have come across three main themes when modding.
1. Root
2. ClockworkMod
3. Cyanogenmod
I don't want to brick my phone so I'd like some help in getting started with this.
Please move this thread if it's not in the right spot.
Question 1: As far as rooting your phone, is the process similar on the Android platform as a whole or is there specific steps for each "line" of phones. It feels like rooting is pretty cut-and-dry. I have rooted before, I just don't remember exactly what the most efficient way of doing it was.
Question 2: It seems like installing ClockworkMod requires that you select an option that's specifically for your phone (i.e. picking an option that applies to a differing phone will brick your phone). Am I correct in this assumption.
Question 3: To my understanding from what I've seen, it is recommended that you white your phone and clear the cache (a very good suggestion) when installing a new ROM. Should this be done after you install ClockworkMod? At what point should this be done and what is the correct steps to do this?
I'm a developer & programmer by nature, but this Android stuff really has me feeling unfamiliar so I need everyones help to understand how this beast ticks.

Hi..check this thread out http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2566642 as it has all you need to get the CM11 rom on your device which works on your version..all what you need is in Silesh.Nair signature (links) at the bottom of his posts, and just download odin 3.07 as you will need one of the recoveries CWM or TWRP with kitkat support to install the CM11 rom, but they are available in Silesh.Nair signature in his posts.

Did you install the latest recovery ( twrp/cwm )? It will only work with the recoveries available in my signature. First flash the recovery using Odin, then flash the ROM zip using recovery.

Yes I used the files in your signature and installed TWRP as follows
- Opened ODIN
- Put Phone into Stock Recovery
- Plugged into comptuer
- Loaded TWRP tar file under PDA in ODIN
- Clicked Start
No errors popped up
To Flash Rom
- Restarted phone and held Volume Up button to load TWRP
- Full Backup before Flashing
- Touched Install
- Selected zip file downloaded from your status
It starts updating and has the following on the screen
"Updating partition details...
Running boot script...
Finished running boot scrip.
Installing '/external_sd/cm-11-20131216-UNOFFICI (text goes off screen at this point)

E:Zip signature verification failed: 1
Error flashing zip '/external_sd/cm-11-20131216- (Text goes off screen again)

Then gives me option of Home, Wipe cache/dalvik(which I also tried) or reboot system
Do you have the rom file on your external sd card..if so I would put the rom zip file on the internal sd and see if it works then..unless you have the rom file on your internal sd already..then disregard this..but it should work.

So I have finally managed to get this installed by basically going back to square one, fresh downloads and fresh factory restore for the 5th time lol and it finally worked. Got a couple questions tho. Is there a way to have the notification LED pulse rotate if theres more than one? like say i get a text and a email waiting for me at same time is there a way to have it switch colours between text and email every 5 seconds or whatever? Also is there a way to make the icons in app drawer smaller?
Not trying to be pushy about getting these added just wanna make sure that its not just a case of ia am missing something
Thanks

The usb port in my samsug i747M S3 is not working on any pc and my phone is stuck in a bootloop. I need to know if there is anyway to flash in a custom recovery via the stock recovery or flash in a new zip flashable rom through stock recovery.
I have used cygwin kitchen to put together a flashable zip from a odin rom i downloaded online but i keep getting esignature verification failed. After researching this i found that only samsung signed zips are allowed to be flashed in stock recovery. How can i sign my zips and make them appear as Samsung signed? If possible!!

Sorry man, that's pretty much the proverbial rock and a hard place... I'm assuming you already tried the factory reset? There really aren't many options when you are in this situation without getting the USB port fixed (which is soldered, so not the easiest thing to do). You can't flash a custom recovery or rom through the stock 3e recovery. At all. Some phones you can, this isn't one of them. This limits your options to 2 things -
Find an OTA update zip that is the same version or the one that is the next in line of updates such as this:
http://www.androidegis.com/how-to/leaked-jelly-bean-ota-update-for-bell-galaxy-s3-i747m-9-mvlali1/ (but this is older and probably won't work and do not even try if you were 4.3 last and is a leak version - this is just for example purposes only)
or you can try this, though since your boatloader is probably fine, not sure if it will work either:
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2549068
Other than that, your options are JTAG service or fixing the port, which if you are gonna spend the $ for a JTAG service, it'd make more sense to just put that towards the repair and then it will be very easy to reload the OS once that is fixed.

Other than that, your options are JTAG service or fixing the port, which if you are gonna spend the $ for a JTAG service, it'd make more sense to just put that towards the repair and then it will be very easy to reload the OS once that is fixed.

I specifically said that it probably wouldn't work and was only for the idea. That update was a leaked version of 4.1.1. I'm assuming your system is probably newer than that, hence why it wouldn't work. I don't know what update you are on and not sure if there is an OTA that would be helpful even. Just saying in your current situation, there aren't many options.
