Why the hell didn't I try to restore my Nandroid backup done in Bootstrap ? I thought, "nah, I'm wasting my time, it's 2 different recoveries". Glad to see I was wrong. It's a long winded process but since nobody offers further P-Roms or any 2nd-init one, our only option for a while.
Cool beans.
Step 4 is what I missed, good thinking there Loki!

The reason I put bootstrap in step 4 was so you didn't have to install it later and to also provide a fall back on a fresh restore.
So how you liking the MoPho? I know I made a few people mad in the Evo community when I switched but consider what the MoPho can do out of the box was there any doubt where I'd end up?

I based it off of the unroot/root testing method I used when I was testing and providing analysis for teamwin and orrbemas on the Evo. I was hoping the original exploit I used for the Evo would work for Juggs' unlock but it didn't. I know it's not pretty and will most likely require that you repeat it for every custom ROM install but it will do for now.
Awesome, now I can get my 4g back to tether the iPad.
I registered just to say thanks! You guys do amazing work around here, been reading for a long time. This worked perfectly!

The short version is:
root
unlock bootloader
install recovery
install custom ROM
backup custom ROM
lock bootloader
root
restore custom ROM
enjoy 4G
Until there is a fix for unlocked 4g this is the only way to use run custom ROMs and still retain 4G. Every time you want to flash a ROM via recovery you need to repeat the steps.
Nice! I'll test this myself after work and add to the guide! Good job man!!

Bootstrap isn't needed til after the relock and root so you have a rooted stock backup and the ability to restore the custom ROM.

After step 5 CWM is no longer on the phone so you can't backup/restore using CWM only bootstrap. Also, restoring the custom ROM through bootstrap on a rooted but LOCKED phone is the only way to retain 4G at this moment.

Im coming over to the photon from E4GT, tired of Samsung.
Anyway, Im confused about the most optimal route for flashing. I see bootstrap, unlocked bootloader stuff. I see a couple kernals, a couple roms....but then there is the OTA thing that will probably occur when I power on the phone. How will affect my rom set up? Why does flashing an ext 4 kernal break the wifi functionality? Why would anyone use bootstrapped method when the bootloader is now unlocked?
Idk, Im just a little photon newb, and I will probably told to go do more reading. But honestly I have such a headache from researching these phones (new sprint customer), dealing with my E4GT probalems....so if anyone feels like typing and introducing me to photon best practices, I will "thank" them.
Thanks guys
Root, Unlock with Pudding, Flash CWM, flash away.
What about that latest OTA? Will my phone alrdy have it?
Root, unlock, flash cwm 5, flash homebase 2.1 with 4.2 update. My phone has been flawless.
Unlock = loose 4g
Even if you get the latest ota the pudding flash takes you back, then whatever the ROM you flash its based on

Just wondering, what problems did you have with your epic touch?
Sent from my MB855 using XDA Premium App
Flashing issues with bootstrap, possible bricking, only really good for backups... My path for flashing was pudding unlock, root with one click root from shabby, fastboot clockwork onto your phone, then place the ROM of your choice on your phone via cwm... I'm running homebase 2.1 Deblur with update 4.2, and so far not a single problem. Just make sure you know what you are doing and read read read before doing anything. Any questions feel free to pm me or one of the other members and we can help you through everything!

If I were to root my phone, what would be the best way to accomplish the following:
1) I can still update to ICS
2) I can restore it to"unrooted" condition
3) I can use it as a wifi hot spot
I am hesitant because this phone works GREAT and I hate to screw anything up on it. Any advice would be appreciated.

Easiest way , just flash amon ra recovery. Use developer menu to install su and stay stock Rom, but remove bloat if you wanted. Make a back up in amon ra prior to rooting and when ota comes flash android. Flash stock recovery in hboot and then your back to normal and can accept ota.

Very VERY difficult to brick this with only using an HTC dev unlock. Now if you were going to run the s-off exploit. More chances of bricking there but if you stay on gingerbread and don't run the ICS leak, you can always revert back to a factory state even if you don't create a backup in Amon RA.
I'll bite.
This shouldn't be in the dev section. This is for the devs to put out their work, ROMs, toolkits, MODS, etc.
This should have gone in either the general section or Q & A. Please remember this from now on.
I'll do it. Wrong thread, should be in Q&A.

1. You can actually install some of the latest ICS software now, if you wanted to. I encourage you to read through this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1425091
It will have a review of everything you need for the Rezound: ROMs, recovery, mods, etc.
If you didn't want to install a custom ROM, then you can always stay stock by just flashing an RUU of either a Gingerbread or ICS ROM.
2. To unroot, read this thread: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1472606
3. I use the WiFi Tether application, which is included with many, if not all custom ROMs. It works really well and is free. Here is the fix needed for it before you use it:
Before Use -Start the app, Permit Root, Set Profile - Samsung Galaxy Nexus (CDMA/LTE) and Check Routing Fix
Good luck! Have fun! And welcome to the Rezound Club!

You guys make it too complicated:
Short answer:
1.) No - Not if your referring to the OTA that is coming someday.. (you would have to unroot (see #2))
1b.) Yes - if you flash a custom recovery and a custom ROM
2.) Yes - reflash Stock RUU
2b.) Provided you don't flash the "leaked" OTA that upgrades your HBoot
3.) yes
4. Read the sticky's that's why they are there

is there any roms I can load on a locked 2.3.5? or am I out of luck? thanks
I believe we are currently stuck. At this time, there is no way to unlock the bootloader which is what is needed (along with gaining root access) to successfully flash custom ROMS. We are still able to root using the photon-torpedo method but beyond that, we sit and wait.
There are other methods of customizing by using Bootstrap recovery, which one would use as an option if you chose NOT to unlock the bootloader and then you can flash some ROMS and other stuff that way. It's been working great for most on 2.3.4 but I'm not 100% sure about 2.3.5 yet....I'm still looking into that myself.
I don't see why bootstrap recovery option wouldn't work on 2.3.5 because it's used on devices with locked bootloader anyway.
For real tho, at the rate the Dev's work around here, I wouldn't be surprised if they crack the bootloader issue on 2.3.5 sooner than later and we'll be flashing this that and everything else before we know it!

Not sure if I can or not to be honest. I have ROM Toolbox Pro & ROM Manager Premium installed but I haven't tried creating a backup of my current ROM (which for me is Stock OS 2.3.5 and rooted with some minor tweaks/mods done). I guess I always assumed it was only useful if I had CWM Recovery flashed and/or was using a custom ROM.

YES!! I used the dx2.apk from another post on here. Followed the instructions and booted into recovery. I did a Nandroid backup. After doing some research I found a thread about a Rerecovery option that makes the flashing process a little easier being that after a factory and/or data wipe, your BSR will be gone. With Rerecovery, you just flash the files as the last step of a CWMR session and BSR will be restored prior to Rebooting!
The info, instructions and download links regarding rerecovery and bootstrap recovery are in this post...

So still no progress on unlocking the bootloader? Or downgrading to 2.3.4? IIRC, that's what I needed to do on my HTC Hero back in the day... But I doubt that is an option or else I would have found that mentioned as an easy solution.

Personally, my device is unlocked but unfortunately, my girls device isn't. I had her device at one point and stupidly, updated to the first Moto Soak test a while back, not realizing what I was getting myself into lol. Luckily, she doesn't care about unlocking/custom ROMs, etc so she swapped devices with me and I've been flashing like its my day job ever since!!
Anyway, back to the initial topic...
I'm thinking/hoping that now that the Photon Q is out with ICS, that Motorola/Google will get on updating us to ICS officially! With any luck, when that update does eventually come, it'll come with a bootloader that is unlockable via Moto's new Bootloader Unlock Tool they recently released! Honestly, that would seem like the sensible thing to do and would of course make current Photon users VERY happy!

how to make bootstrap clockwork recovery work
I had problems at first with the bootstrap recovery. What you have to do is open it and hit install recovery, once you get the success message hit it again, after the second success message plug in the phone and hit reboot. It will reboot to recovery every time. If you just hit install recovery then reboot it won't work

Decide which recovery you want, and flash it through bootloader.
I understand that, thank you. And im not trying to be lazy, ive gone through 10 different pages of posts so far and just about everyone of them references not flashing ICS rom. So i just wanted to make sure i wasn't ahead of myself for already having the official ICS. But i also don't want to flash any roms if i don't have to. I just want to gain root access. So thank you for the tip. I will start looking for recoveries.
hey don't feel bad, i had 1.4 s-off and went to stock so to get the bug free official ics and am extremely let down - to put it mildly.

If you are unrooted and s-on right now, you may never be able to root.
Someone will have to spend time finding an exploit. How many devs are working on the TB now?
But if you have S-off still, then you could possibly install an alternate recovery, like clockwork, then install su from inside cwm and obtain root that way.

Since the bootloader is locked it isn't possible. We don't have an exploit for it and the htc dev method doesn't work either. Until an exploit is found any new bolt owners are sol. It is unlikely an exploit will be found since there aren't any devs interested in finding an exploit.
