I'm new here to XDA, in fact I'm new to the cell phone/smart phone arena in general. I just got my first cell phone (not company owned/paid for) about a month and a half ago. But, being the tech nerd I am when it comes to maximizing performance and customization with computer hardware, it transferred over to my cell phone and wanting to maximize it for everything I could possibly imagine it doing.
But to cut to the chase, I recently signed up with Sprint and originally bought an Evo 4G, but luckily the Evo 3D was released within a week of me signing up so I took advantage of the return policy and got that.
The point of this thread is I want to say thank you. The reason being is because for the first month and a half I've owned the Evo 3D, while I was happy with it's base performance, but I felt with the hardware under the hood could do more. When unrevoked and alpharev released their revolutionary s-off tool I was excited, but at the same time timid. I thought about all the worst case scenarios I seem to have the unfortunate luck of falling upon and stopped myself from rooting my phone just based on that fear alone. But after seeing a few youtube videos, and a plethora of guides including step by step instructions provided by you guys on how to root my phone, and the benefits I took that leap of faith.
In other words, or as most forum junkies would call it tl;dr -- I would like to thank XDA and the people who post on these forums, as well as provide quality ROM's, Mod's, and Kernels for helping me get over my fear of rooting, because now the Evo 3D I originally bought is now rooted and doing more. Hell, even after rooting my phone I decided to buy the XDA app off of the android market to contribute in what way I can, and once I get a credit card I'm going to contribute to JoelZ9614's getting an Evo 3D fund.
Again thank you.

Welcome to xda. The devs around here are amazing, and we are indeed lucky to have.such a.plethora of devs for our device.

Gonna have to agree with the OP! :]
I remember I was new to android and the OG evo was my into to it and xda. I was overwhelmed with new stuff to learn..what is a PRL, MSL, throttling and so on....I just kept on reading the posts and using google for research on new terminology. I had to to stop being so darn confused. The 3vo( any haters for that term...tough...I will call it what I want..I own the damn thing... ) is one heck of a phone and I see the progression on the roms coming at a incredible rate. Only this place can we have what we have. I do agree with you.
I am new here as well but i have been on other Android forums for a while ow. I find the information is greater here and keeps me on the XDA developers pages longer. I have this on my phone as well and wanna thank u guys and gals for ur work.
It's been a crazy 2 years.
Some of us have already moved on to other devices(me2! ), and some still live here. Some of you , have no idea who I am xD. Most of your upgrades should be soon. (in fact mine is this month) The eris was my first android phone, my door to a magically mystical place I had never been before. While there was a lot of drama, we were able to get root, ***** the device, OC it , and build custom roms. In fact, I was the first person to ever have a rooted Eris(thanks Caboose!) and make the first custom rom for it. I have evolved greatly from these days, and I can always thank my Eris for guiding me the way. If any Evil Eris supporters are still here, thank you so much, I cannot say(or type) the words to show how appreciative I am of you guys. I am now much involved in the Droid X scene. Anywho, I hope you guys enjoyed the phone as much as I did, tell me when your upgrade is, and what you plan to get!

Now there's a blast from the past. Thanks for everything you've done here with the Eris EE was the first ROM I used and used it for quite some time. My upgrade is due the end of Nov. Currently I still have my original Eris which my wife now uses (finally talked her into moving away from her Blackberry ) and I'm now on the DInc1 until my upgrade time. My next phone will probably be either DInc2 or Vigor. Still waiting to see come Nov/Dec.
Hey Framework43, good to see you posting here again in the Eris forums .
Been a while since I've seen you, Eclips3, jcase, jamezelle, GrdLock, etc. post over here, but I know you guys are still around, here and there.
I've still got my Eris, but I've been using my Droid X as my day-to-day phone since launch day of last year.
I love my X, but I can't let go of the Eris and still tinker with it as much as time allows.
Still waiting to hear about the next big device to come out, but I really want to make sure that we've got a good dev community behind it and an unlocked bootloader would certainly help in that respect. I think we're all hoping (probably foolishly) that the Bionic might be/get unlocked...(I did see last night that the Photon has been unlocked--although not necessarily by Moto).
Anyway, good to see you here again.
Cheers!
My upgrade is September 19. I will probably get the cheapest of the X2, Dinc2, or Tbolt.
I don't want to get a brand new phone for two reasons: 1) I am cheap, and 2) I want a phone already supported by XDA. If you guys have a suggestion concerning another phone I should consider or why I shouldn't consider one of the above let me know. My only restriction is it must be HTC or Moto. I don't want to learn another vendor interface. Did I mention I'm lazy as well as cheap?
The Eris I got for free when my wife got her Droid. I'd like to pay close to that for my next one. She's headed for a Droid3.
I've got until next March before I upgrade. I bought my Eris used several months ago because work agreed to pay for our data plans, and it was the only one I could buy for a decent price (my current phone was a Samsung Hue). I'm sure I'll only have a certain amount of funds to pay for my phone at upgrade time, so maybe the T-bolt or other good 4g phone will be free by then.
LOL - I bought my Eris on drop day, so I'm already eligible for an upgrade.
I had the same "dumb" feature phone for - get this - 5 years before that.
I've been using computers continously since 1976 and can no longer remember how many deskside and laptop computers have passed through my hands, so I don't get all that excited about the prospects of getting "the latest and greatest" any more. Are the new phones that much better? Sure they are.
Having said that though, I will also admit: the little Eris is the coolest device I've ever owned. Maybe not the "best of the bunch" at the time - but that didn't matter to me: I wanted it for its form factor. If I wait a while, the next phone I buy will probably make the same impression on me, rather than just being "a little bit better"... and I won't be married to any carrier at that time.
I'm glad we had the group of devs we did; not every android phone gets the same degree of attention.
The whole time I owned the Eris, my phone kept getting better, thanks to Framework and all the other devs. Pretty awesome that nearly 2 years later, I'm running GB on a phone that shipped as a Cupcake device.

Evil Eris was also the first ROM I ever used. One of my favorites.

Me3, or 4; Evil Eris was the first custom ROM I flashed on my Eris, too. I was late to the Eris game, but in a way just in time as just about the time my Eris shipped to me, 2.1 OTA was rooted, so by the time I received mine I had researched a lot, already knew how to root it and had decided on what I was going to try first. Thank you, FrameWork43 (it's funny, the second time I used EarthLink as an ISP they still had my original email address reserved - [email protected], so I chose roirrawedoreht43, either because 42 was already taken or because it was the answer to life, the universe, and everything +1), and to everyone else who has made my phone so tinkerable.
I'm not with Verizon any more, I'm with PagePlus and I love the savings. I do plan on paying retail for some phone hopefully within the next year, but we shall see. I know that no matter how powerful my next phone is when stock, that I still won't accept any that can't be rooted because I love to make things do things they're not supposed to be able to do!!!
Got my Eris the day they came out (v1.5) and now that I have Condemned CM7 V17 rooted....I'm gonna keep it another two or three years. Thank You CondemnedSoul.
By the way...your "Noobie video" scared the he!! out of me
Im bored, there is nothing to work on root wise (at least not within my skill level) so I did a little digging on the HTC incredible.
I found that the phone was released on April 29th 2010, but before that, there were some crazy rumors flying around about the date, the actual specs.. and so on
ROOT was achieved on June 10th, but was very unstable and could brick phones. We have temp root, and it works, but they had no root at all for over a month.
And, while its hard to tell, it looks like they got s-off around July 1st.
During all this time, there were posts about "the dinc is unrootable", "Im going to switch phones, i need root.." and so on.
Actaully, if you forget for a second you are reading year and a half old posts, it almost feels like our forums now
The rezound came out Nov14th.. its been barley over a month and we already have more done than what they had on the incredible.
I dont really have any point in posting this other than its informational and adds some perspective for people who may be new to this sort of thing.

That is probably the main reason you don't hear me crying about not having perm root and s-off. I lived through the Incredible wait period.
Back then I continued deving on the Omnia Win Moble until I could on the Inc. Now I am doing that on the Inc until I can on the Rezound.
I have complete faith that we will have that opportunity. I am just a little bored right now on the Inc with 3.5
OK, so I have my eye on the SGS3. I'd like to be able to develop for that like I do my Evo 3D, but I have a few questions since I don't have the phone and there's a lot of experience here. I could probably spend an hour or so searching for this stuff but I figure I might get better ideas from asking.
First, how is the dev scene for this phone? Does it ship s-off? Any issues specific to developing for this phone? Hows the camera? Does it have true zero shutter lag? HTC making phones with a half second shutter delay (that and quality issues) are one thing that has pushed me to try Samsung this time. Finally, it appears that some Sprint customers (like maybe ones with Sprint for 10 years) get an upgrade after a year. Sprint wants me to wait 2 years for any discount. I can't afford the full price but I know sometimes there are unannounced discounts or ways to get it cheaper. For example, Sprint said I didn't qualify last year for my Evo 3D either until someone here pointed out that I should check to see if I was a premier member (I think that was the term). Turns out I was and only had to mention it and I got the discount. Any ideas? Anything like that possible this time?
Oh, I want to keep my Evo 3D so I can develop for both, so I guess getting $100 trade-in discount is out too.
Thanks for any insight,
Mike
Samsung devices come with unlocked bootloaders, and there is no such thing as s-on or s-off, there is no signature checking in the bootloader.
There is a flash counter and service at the moment, but nothing to stop you flashing or developing custom roms.
Seriously hoping this is true. I switched over to the Epic 4G Touch a few months back. Gave my 3D to my Mom running MeanROM. Been missing it ever since. She gets awesome life running the old 3.3. Just came back home and now updating her to your latest version. Thanks for your hard work on this Rom and making my life a little easier. MeanROM=0 tech support for Mom's phone.

mickeyxda,
I've been fan of your Mean Rom from Evo 3D and EVO 4G LTE. I recently gave my Evo 4G LTE to my wife and got my self a shiny new Galaxy S3 off of Craiglist for $250.
The Reason why I changed is because I got bored of Sense and although I like CM10, it's neither ready for prime time and missing a lot of the functionality from HTC. Also until Mean Rom 4.0 Sense roms tended to lag if you had lots of apps and Widgets like I did. The 2GB of RAM in the US GS III's was a big seller for me. Also like motion features a lot. This phone has never ever lagged for me on Touch Wiz.
That said, Its super easy to root theses Samsung Phones. Like veyka said, these phones have unlocked bootloaders. You just install a custom recovery using ODIN then flash a small root file to obtain root and avoiding installing factory recovery on boot.
I'll be honest with you, It would be awesome if you could develop Roms for GS III with the quality of your Mean Roms. Although the performance of Touchwiz is second to none I hate the fact the it takes up a lot of my screens real estate for the Dock. I hate that. By the way, few Sprint GS III roms include Google now for ICS like Mean Rom. Currently I use Blazer Rom with Apex launcher. For some reason the Apex launcher transitions are not as smooth as when installed on the Evo 4G LTE though. I guess that's an Apex Launcher issue.
Anyway, hope this info from a user stand point can motivate you to start developing for it.
Let me know if in any way I can assist you with your decision to develop or not. PM me if you want. I'm also on Google+.

Meaning, the 'all other devices' no longer works, since as was pointed out, it was never technically on the official list to begin with.
no fkidding?
need to verify before I cancel my pending pre-order.
I don't think it was ever on the list. The accounts I've read are of people selecting the "other supported devices" option.
I'll likely cancel my pre-order too. This makes me sad, I was so exited about this device.

As stated above, I am also totally willing to live with stock for a while. The great devs around here haven't let us down yet and I doubt they will now.:good:
God I hope so, I'm just picturing another OneX situation..
I figured this would happen sooner than later which is why I was going to pick one up tomorrow morning, but the night before is BS.
This is like the Rezound all over again. By the time S-Off was possible, I had lost interest and never bought one. I guess I'll keep my GNex a while longer. As much as I want this phone tomorrow, I'll likely never buy it or any other HTC phone.......unless the dev's pop out in the next week or two with an unlock for the bootloader and S-Off, then I'll reconsider. I just wonder if VZW or HTC have a way of quantifying lost revenues due to locking the phones down.

and yet, VZ still wants us to bend over.
That's why I don't say any thing about HTCDev website. Once Verizon hears a device can be unlocked, its game over.
Pardon my complete ignorance. I've only had one HTC device before (Spouses TBolt), but I rooted it when I first got it and rooting instructions went live on XDA. What's the likelihood of rooting the DNA without having the HTCDev site unlocking it. Again, sorry if this is an elementary question.....
I am getting this phone tomorrow and give my S3 to the spouse, but I remember the wait before that phone was rooted, and it was agonizing. A Perm Root method came out literally on the 14th day, my last day to return it, so I got lucky. Do you think this will stunt development for this phone? I love using different, power-sipping kernels on to my devices.....

You do realize that a quality ROM will probably not be out for weeks. Not quite sure what you are looking to do the very first day with your bootloader / root. I am willing to wait a couple of weeks as I am sure the devs will figure it out.
I'm am so pissed, but this kind of thing happens every year when I upgrade. I'm still getting mine tomorrow, and just praying S-Off won't take as long to achieve like it did for the Rezound. Fingers Crossed

Is anyone actually surprised by this? By most accounts, this was entirely expected given what has happened with some previous Verizon HTC devices. Like the Incredible 4G, which could be unlocked via the site before it was officially released, but once the release date actually rolled around, it no longer worked.
I prefer to have root just for wifi tether and titanium backup. Just so much easier to restore apps with it then to try and use each app's backup/restore process.
I'm not looking until Feb anyways, but definitely disappointing.
This seems like a deal breaker to me. I was all hyped up about this but not so much anymore.
