[Q] CM7 problems! Looking for tweaks or new ROM! - Thunderbolt Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

So I'm not sure what part of CM7 is not working for me, but I'm definately not happy. Three main reasons are:
ADW Force closing
Choppy scrolling
Poor signal/3g 4g toggling
I'm running MR2 and the kernal that came with the ROM in ROM Manager. I tried ADW EX and it does the same thing.
Is there anything I can do to improve this? I'm looking for a daily driver that is smooth, quick, and no force closing! I like Sense, but not the bloat. I would sacrifice performance for battery life.
I've seen some vids on UberBamf and it looks great! But I've also seen some good vids on CM7, it just does not work well on my phone. What are some suggestions?

If you installed it through ROM Manager, I'd recommend not doing that. Also, format /system. That's not done in a standard wipe.

you must be doing something wrong. I have been running CM7 as a daily driver since 1.1 and it has never done me wrong. My suggestion to you would be to clear off your sd card or get a new one for the install, wipe EVERYTHING yes everything, format /system, install the newest radio and do a fresh install. After you do the install run a fix permissions from rom manager and reboot. I have never had any issues doing it this way.

I would like to say that perhaps your issues are from using ROM Manager to install it and not flashing directly in recovery. Maybe or maybe not, but there are a lot of people that do have issues from using rom manager. Other issues would be not clearing out all data from your previous rom including the /system partition, dalvik cache, normal cache and /data and restoring system data from your previous rom.
I have none of your issues and have been using CM7 for nearly 2 months.

So far I fixed permissions in Rom Manager and its been a whole different phone! I'll wait until tomorrow to see if anything else needs to be done.

I saw the 3G/4G issue in RC 1.5.2, but not in RC 1.6.1 (current, updated via ROM Manager). The remaining issues I'm seeing are low in-call volume, and Flash in-browser play-back.

4. video recorder does not work
5. 3d gallery is more a 1 fps slide show.
6. when in gallery and i switch the phone sideways, it shows 6 images of the gallery distorted (unusable)
I did a fresh rom install, and still these problems persist.
cleared cache and all.
common problems or is it just this phone....
I have all the same issues with the exception of not being able to lock it. Change the camera from autofocus to touch focus, and get rid of the 3d gallery, Eris cannot handle it sadly.

Is there just a 2.1 rom thats fast and no problems?
I just found the gps fix here's the link http://forum.xda-developers.com/attachment.php?attachmentid=476754&d=1293732152
You may like the XTRsense ROM,
I've never tried it myself though

+1 xtrSENSE, IMHO you won't find a better 2.1 ROM, or if you want stock but without sense home itself, xtrROM. Both excellent.
xtrsense is really the smoothest Ive used too.
i wonder if kaosfroyo got its CM updated and what not if it would work better? I know its been on the back burner for some time.

I have issues with the browser closing after about 3 seconds after updating to Kaosfroyo v39. I noticed your update link to fix the GPS and browser, but that link is not working. Any other insight on fixing this? Many thanks! Carl
Hmm. I just clicked on the link and it downloaded the gps fix for me instantly, it won't actually open a page as its a direct download. Did you try accessing the link with your phone or comp? Try the phone, and while it may be a pain in the ass, use an alternate browser temporarily for the link such as Dolphin Mini.
PM me if you are still having problems and I will do my best to help.

It's pretty simple and essentially the same process that you used to install KF. You are already rooted, so you now need to download the xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip file from here: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=726467
Copy that zip file to your SD card and then use the following procedure:
- shut down the phone
- restart in recovery by holding down VolUp while you start the phone until you see the Amon_RA recovery screen
- go to the Backup/Restore menu
- Choose Nandroid backup
- When that is done, press VolDn to return to the main menu
- Go to the Wipe menu
- Wipe data/factory reset
- Wipe Dalvik cache
- Press VolDn to go back to the main menu
- Choose Flash a zip from SD card
- Choose the xtrSENSE5.0.1.zip file
- restart the phone
I had kaosfroyo v39 for only a few minutes before i flashed a cyanogenmod7 gingerbread rom which made me much happier
how long have u had the gingerbread rom for? what are some of the features it has compared to the xtrsense rom or any xtr rom. i read the xtr rom's are super speedy i can't stand the froyo 39 definately slowing down lately
well im gonna try the xtr sense rom i've really wanted the sense capability back so i hope this goes good

I flip back and forth between xtrSENSE and one or two of the GB ROMs weekly; I, like many others, have been running the GB ROMs for many months now. They are very stable and much, much better than KF at this point.
I find it hard to find speed differences between ROMs after things have been running for a while. About the only difference I see is battery life - the GB ROMs are more efficient than xtrROM and xtrSENSE, all things being equal, on my phone. xtrSENSE is excellent, all of the GB ROMs are great and well-supported at this time. Sometimes there are updates to the GB ROMs that may break some functionality but they are always fixed by the next update - just read the comments in those threads to see and you can always download and flash an older version if you need something to work. You cannot go wrong with either choice.
well so far nearly 24hrs with the xtrsense rom and loving the speed and smoothness so far. there are a few things i liked to have kept from the froyo rom to this one but i'd rather have the smoothness and quickness than the few things i liked more from the froyo rom. still re-learning everything tho

CM7 Thunderbolt Help Thread

I'll preface with this:
1. I am not a dev.
2. I don't intend to take credit away from any of the CM7 devs.
3. I don't intend to take credit for any of the solutions posted here.
I like to keep up with the main thread, but it has become a little unruly, with the same questions being asked and answered repeatedly. I was thinking we could keep this thread as something of a troubleshooting thread, with known problems and solutions in the OP, in an attempt to keep the main CM7 thread (here) a bit more organized for dev related stuff.
Mods, if this thread is in the wrong forum or inappropriate, feel free to deal with it accordingly.
OK:

CM7 for Thunderbolt
Current Version: RC1.4 (MR2/2.5 Radio Only)
Merged to Mainline: No
Wipe Required: No if upgrading from RC1.2 or RC1.3 (although if you are having ANY problems, first troubleshooting step is to reinstall following a complete wipe). Yes if you are coming from ANY OTHER PREVIOUS VERSION OR ROM
Problems With Known Fixes
Problem:
I just installed CM7, where is the Market?!
Solution:
Not a problem, you just have to install gapps.
- Easiest way is to download and install through ROM Manager: Rom Manager -> Download ROM -> Google Apps.
- Alternatively, you can download and install manually. Link. Flash using Recovery.
Problem:
GPS is not getting a fix
Solution:
1. Be sure that you are on RC1.2, and that you did a full wipe prior to installing.
2. Backup CM7 in Clockwork Recovery.
3. Do a full wipe.
4. Flash a Sense based ROM, such as BAMF.
5. Boot into the Sense based ROM that you flashed in Step 4, and obtain a GPS fix.
6. While your GPS is locked, reboot to recovery. (Hold Power -> Reboot to Recovery)
7. Do a full wipe.
8. Restore the CM7 backup you made in step 1.
9. Boot into CM7. Your GPS should now be working.
Problem:
Inaccurate signal bars/I only have two bars on LTE
Solution:
FIXED ON RC1.3
Problem:
Non-GPS geolocation is (very) inaccurate

wraithdu said:
The inaccurate non-GPS location can be fixed by turning on WiFi (does not need to be connected, just ON). Obviously a temporary fix, but works for me - I can get location now in Beautiful Widgets, SiMi Clock, The Weather Channel, and the browser. I increased my WiFi scan interval to 3 minutes to try and help battery. But it beats getting the weather for Guam.

Problems With Fixes of Questionable Effectiveness
Problem:
Problems with in-browser flash
Solution:
chmod 000 /data/data/com.android.browser/app_plugins/com.adobe.flashplayer/.macromedia/Flash_Player/config.data
Varying reports of this working/not working
Problem:
Low volume
Solution:
Since perception of volume is subjective, it's difficult to say whether or not this is a true problem, and whether or not it's been fixed. Slayher has stated that it's been fixed since one of the earlier releases. Another possible solution is here (credit to utkanos), which has been used with varying results - again, volume perception is subjective.
Problem:
Included wireless tethering not working
Solution:
From what I've seen, you will be able to connect to the wireless network, but you will not be able to obtain an IP address. I have found that forcing an IP release/renew upon connecting generally takes care of this problem. On Windows, this can be done with the following:
1. Start -> Run -> "cmd"
2. ipconfig /release
3. ipconfig /renew
Problems Without Known Fixes
Problem:
Streaming audio over bluetooth is choppy

OK, post problems (and fixes, if there are any) and I'll do my best to keep the OP updated in an attempt to keep the main dev thread more organized. When posting an issue, please include:
CM7 version
Kernel
Radio
Wipe
all aosp roms including gingerbread roms reads data strength instead of cellar radio strength. that's why it appears to have less bars. if you search there are mods i believe to give you the appearance of higher signal strength on the forums here.
cm7 and Netflix issues
I believe this is a CM7 issue, as it only happens with is rom and previous versions but I'm not sure if its FPS or just choppiness but Id like to get this fixed other fixes like chmod 000 have not worked.
On a different note I would like to thank everyone involved with CM7 its by far the best ROM.
Thank You Devs.

This is also true for embedded flash videos. If I use the chmod 000 it skips if I go above 360 but it works. Older versions don't let me go above 360 because the video menu, it just closes whenever I open it.
The one issue that bugs me the most about this ROM is that it does not find my location correctly. Not talking about GPS because that works perfectly, but how I'm found through the network does not work. Google Maps works perfectly at finding my location but apps like fancy widget and even google.com locate me in different places.
I live in Buffalo, NY but my phone insists I move frequently around the world. First I'm in Fort Wayne, IN, then Houston, TX, then Nairobi, Kenya, and sometimes in Lawndale, CA.
Something's wrong and no one seems to have a fix that'll work for me. I'm assuming that's cause no one cares about it because its so miniscule.
Tried different radios and GPS status but nothing has worked.
Fix? Slayher?
I am absolutely loving this rom, I flashed it on my girls Droid x and instantly had to have it on my tbolt. GPS works great, more than great, and no other issues except two things.
First, when streaming Pandora or slacker through bt the skip like crazy, but when played through the phones speaker they're fine. No big deal.
Secondly I must be doing something wrong because my battery life is terrible. I have an extended battery that the phone ate through in 8 hours moderate use. And my stock battery is dropping about 30% an hour...
I'm not a noob with screen time out to 10 mins and brightness all the way up, so its got to have something to do with my CPU settings. I'm using set CPU to over clock to 1450. Tried different goveners. I assume there's different kernels out there I'm gonna have to try out, what kernel is included? Running mr2 ota

What rom were you running before, and did you wipe?
In any case, easiest solution would be to install GAPPS from ROM Manager.
Can't seem to connect to my home wifi network. Anyone else experience this issue?
From looking through the main thread, saw one suggestion, which didn't work for me: post 7360
OTA MR2; full wipe; RC1.1; gapps; set up accounts; cache wipe; RC1.2

Try a full wipe before installing 1.2. I believe that was recommended by slayher.
Is it only your home wifi, or are you having trouble with all wifi connectivity?
problem: voice to text works intermittently and not at all with any background noise
corrective solutions taken that haven't corrected problem: installed talkback, kickback and google voice search.
CM 1.2
OTA radio
stock kernel
full partition wipe, also formatted SD prior to install

I'm interested to know the answer to this battery issue. Which kernel is best for battery life/stability? I'm running stock right now, but I really haven't ran it long enough to get good usage stats.

Random FCs, I know, I know

I've tried everything I can think of or find in this subject but I can't figure it out.
I'm getting FCs all over and seemingly randomly.
There's no one program doing it either.
I've used cyanogen 7 7/17 version with glitch kernel (both 11 and 12) and the v3 kernel. Maybe the stock but I don't remember.
Also flashed the dl09 or which ever radio was recommended for cm7 on the ROM list sticky.
Tried the nighties and am on not the recent one but the one right before it with stock and glitch 11 and 12. Also tried before and after v6 super charger which seemed to make my launcher before faster and without the stopped responding dialog.
I also use the ultimate kernel removing script between kernels.
Here's what I've already done to try to fix it:
Wipe big 3. fives it for awhile then starts up in force.
Wiped to stock 2 or 3 times. Still happens.
Fixed permissions. Works longest so far but still starts up again later.
Wipe cache and data in manage applications settings menu for creasing programs. Works for a while usually but then goes
back to crashing.
I followed ask instructions to install everything properly.
The only thing is that
do I need a special bootloader with nighties and stock kernel?
What am I missing here? It seems like it's related to wifi because I can keep things stable a little longer with wifi off but it is not always 100%. Definitely related to internet. Also seems like the cache reaches 2-3 megs when programs crash
browser seems to be more likely to crash. Will crash constantly and I'll open up Firefox or opera wends everything is peachy. I think neither ox those browsers crash from what I can tell.
Oh and could it be gapps somehow. I'm not sure but it might be a case built that all the crashing programs are gapps.
I've tried the new version 2.2.5 I think posted somewhere and the original 2.2.3 I think. I'm pretty sure they both crash.
I'm maybe to frustrated to see what's right in front of me and I maybe have forgotten an important detail so please forgive and I'll be happy to provide any info.
This is near perfect and that's the thing that's holding me back right now.
Anyone else have this happen to them? Any advise?

How did you originally come to cm7..ie. What was your previous rom and kernel prior to making the switch?
What steps did you take to get to
mtd format?
And lastly I read your whole OP but am still unsure if you've tried Odin'ing a stock VZW official rom to start from scratch? (ie. Eb01,dl09, or ed05)
Edit: Also did you restore any apps or system data via titanium backup?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I've come to cm7 at least twice from a stock froyo ROM. I followed the directions in the sticky exactly. At least twice.
I did restore titanium but not from non-mtd. I reinstalled every app one by one after upgrading.
I'm thinking it might be the wrong gapps. If browser is a part of gapps, I'd betting on it then. It seems the fc's might all be related to
the various gapps.
That's the only thing that I can think if that I haven't tried.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
Here's the latest gapps.zip includes market...don't know if you've tried this oneand I don't think it contains anything for the browser, but i'm not sure...its for Mtd builds.
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1191063
Edit: i'm also assuming you've ran fix permissions via cwm or terminal emulator right?
Sent from my SCH-I500 using XDA App
I'm making you assume a lot, sorry. Yeah. Did all that.
I'm trying to isolate it. I'm seeing that the force closings are maybe not so random.
It's the browser, google services framework and programs that I guess rely on browser. They are programs that access the http protocol. Reddit/f5, Chan browser etc. I've yet to have a program crash that was not accessing the internet like chuzzle.
Gmail does sometimes too.
Anyway, if they fc I go into manage applications and usually clear cache for the offending program Anne it works again until the cache gets up around 2 or 3 megs give or take.
I know people have been complaining about the data cutting in and out on this ROM so maybe that's involved.
I originally thought it was wifi because it seemed to only happen on wifi but i'm getting it on 3g but not as often.
I'm thinking that the data appears to be on but isn't and it's confusing programs but then there would be others with the problem. The other theory is that my cache space is fried.
Sent from my SCH-I500 using xda premium
In case someone finds this buried down here with the same issue, here's how I think I fixed it.
Wipe data again. Make sure you let the gapp installer install everything itself.
Titanium backup: restore missing apps (double check for went google apps) and data. Or hand install your apps and restore data.
I have the install location set to original.
That seemed to work even with the seeming wifi cut out and the whole thing.
I also didn't install Firefox or opera this time. That shouldn't be the problem but i'm recording it here anyway just in case.
Good luck

Eclipse vs CM7DX2

So, i'm running Eclipse 2.0 on my DX2 right now, and i flashed it after trying CM7. CM7 was great, but felt sluggish at times (admittedly I don't believe that I had the "allow purging of assets" enabled at the time either). So after flashing the brand new Eclipse 2.0, I felt like Eclipse was so much more complete, even though it is blur-based. Now, however, after about 3 weeks it's getting sluggish at random times for no reason. There's no apparently eating up the CPU. I always have 80+ MBs of RAM (I'm running Supercharger V6 with the middle (unleaded?) option for 512mb devices selected). I can't seem to pinpoint the problem. So here's where I pose 2 questions:
Eclipse or CM7DX2 (and your reasoning, if you can)
And any ideas on the sluggish performance? I've had this happen on previous ROMs too (older Eclipse models and stock gingerbread w/ bloat removed). I always SBF and wipe data/cache before each fresh ROM install.
Thanks!

Wow, I'm really surprised to hear Eclipse is running sluggishly. I've been running it for a while now and it's completely reliable, the epitome of a "daily driver". Are you running any funky apps or getting apps from fringe markets?
I've found either one can get sluggish, especially if you have a ton of apps loaded.
What I've been doing now is rebooting daily. I'm also running Fast Reboot Pro, which is really more of a "soft" reboot - it doesn't really reboot the phone, per se, but instead it "simulates" a reboot by stopping many services and programs that wouldn't be running at start up.
I myself have a lot of apps installed. I should probably go and remove them, but for some reason, I like to have them loaded (mainly games) just in case I want to play them. OCD anyone?
In any case, I was running CM7 and I'm now running Eclipse 2.1. I've found that I've had the problems in either one which required a reboot. I just switched to Eclipse 2.1 because I found it a wee-bit more stable (no Superuser issues like in CM7) and Eclipse 2.1 has a even more Motoblur crap removed. It's just as responsive as CM7 IMHO.
But, in any case, a daily reboot will fix things and I'm hearing from many that this is almost global across the board with any ROM for the DX2. I think what really hurts the DX2 is the 512mb of main memory. Just pitiful compared to other phones out there.
I've also found running V6 Turbocharger scripts (the latest) helps as well. I've enabled options 6 and 20. Now, this is fine for Eclipse, but you don't want to run it with CM7. At least, that's what I've been told.
Anyways, when I find things get sluggish, I run the Fast Reboot Pro AND, since I'm running Go Launcher EX, I'll got into the "Running Programs" tab in the app drawer and close all the apps in there as well.
If that doesn't help, I then run V6 TC and run option 18 (which recoups RAM and kills lag). If that doesn't help, then I will reboot.
I also forgot to mention, I also use an application called Autostarts. It allows you to choose which apps start up based on a system event (during startup, after startup, USB connection/disconnect, WiFi status change, etc). I've found that a LOT of apps that I've installed start up on some various events. Many games apparently like to connect when they sense there is a data connection present, so I've turned those off. I only want the apps running when I actually launch them. With Autostarts, I have been able to finely control what apps start and when, which has helped as well.
go into BSR and wipe cache and dalvik cache
lemme know if that clears up Ya,lag
it worked for someone else and I've used that method before to clear up lagging issues...

also, you know eclipse has a 2.1 version out now correct?

I agree wholeheartedly with the above statement, they are nearly equals in every respect except for SU and most of the time it depends on the user. You will have your own opinions of what you like and dislike in a ROM.
I have always liked Cyanogenmod and I have nothing against Eclipse, it was something that really saved the X2 for me, I was super POed when I found that there was so little to be done with my phone last August when I upgraded to it.
IMHO I would stick with Eclipse just because it is more stable, Cyanogen was a great release from the norm of Moto based ROMS but it is missing a few things since we cannot build it specifically for our phone as easily as everyone else.
Personally though, I hate you guys for being able to flash things right now and I really, really cannot wait for this F-ing soak to come through so I can either join you on 2.1 or have a really fancy paper weight.....
I've been running Eclipse for months, 2.1 for a few weeks now, best version yet. I run it with the build prop mash up, its always fast and responsive. However there are a couple things I do to help ensure that.
1. I schedule "Clear cache for user & system apps" in TB to run daily at 4:30 AM while I'm sleeping which is 30 minutes after my daily backup runs. After the cache clean it reboots. When I get up at 5:30 its usually quick and responsive all day.
2. Use the Moto performance manager built into Eclipse parts, schedule things that you don't want or need running in the background to auto-end (kills the app 2 minutes after the screen shuts off) This really helps with battery life as well, I can usually get 20+ hours of light/moderate use and it helps manage those apps that like to turn themselves on in the background.
3. I use Avast for security, but I also use the firewall feature to restrict network access of games & apps that don't need it.
4. I keep any apps/games I don't use regularly uninstalled, which I can quickly restore from TB if I need them. That seems to really help to as my wife had every free app of the day from amazon installed on hers and it was constantly locking/freezing. she cleaned most of them up and did the auto-end trick and hers has come back to life.
These are just suggestions but I've been using them for months now and they really work well to maximize the X2 as much as we can given the restrictions we have on it. Goodluck.

iBolski, the similarities between yours and my "phone management" techniques scare me lol.
pretty much everything you have said I do as well, including leaving games installed just in case I wanna play one day lmao
I just wanted to add to the point you made about rebooting once every day, this is something that it's not only recommended for the Dx2 but for ALL, Android powered phones in general, I do believe it is also written in the "manual", that comes with the devices, kinda like how a PC needs a reboot once in a while, Android benefits from a reboot once a day as well, allows it to drop system caches that have built up and are hanging around and such,
that fast reboot app I have also used in the past, but nothing compares to an, accrual power cycle of the device, I will even go ahead and wipe cache from Android recovery as well once every couple days,
our set UPS are most likely extremely similar and I've found I get pretty damn near the most I can get out of this x2, I feel like the only thing else I could benefit from is a new kernel, as I've pretty much tweaked this thing to the max I can get while locked down

I think we're so similar due to the fact that I've seen you tell people to do this, so I'm just following your instructions. Scary, huh?
Also, Orange Terror gave a great tip that I didn't even know existed in Titanium Backup Pr. Goes to show you can always learn something new since I've used TBU for about two years now. I've gone in and set up a schedule to clear user and app cache and reboot the system every day around 4 am. At 3 am, I have it backup and upload to my Box account. Now I don't have to worry about doing that myself or missing a backup.
But I think the big thing that has helped me out now is also the Autostarts app. Going through and having it ensure certain apps don't launch under various scenarios has definitely caused my phone to be MUCH more responsive now.
Like you, it's allowed this crap X2 to actually be functional, along with Eclipse 2.1 and/or CM7. With DZK and Nitro, I'm not sure where this phone would be. Probably thrown against the wall and shattered into a million pieces!

Amen to that. Thanks to Nitro, DZK and anyone that has contributed something.
I've been trying to start synching to box through TBU recently, but I can't schedule it to run automatically and when I try to run it manually after an hour its at like 20%, and I'm doing it on wifi. And it won't upload to my dropbox account at all, just sits there. Any suggestions?

well I know quote a few people seem to trust my set up lol
that auto starts app sound like it worth checking into also, thanks for the tip!
Thanks for all the responses guys! It's great to see some insight as to what everybody does on their daily schedule.
1. Yes, i do know there is 2.1, I just haven't had the time/availability to upgrade (until tonight, so i'll probably be doing that).
2. I'm admittedly bad at keeping a LOT of apps installed feeling like i'll need to use them, probably would be better off if i just kept them either frozen or only kept a backup.
3. As with you, iBolski, i've been running option 6 in V6 and that definitely helps a lot.
4. I'll have to try the nightly cache clearing, i usually just manually do it when i feel the phone is laggy.
Also, what launchers do you guys use? Just outta curiosity. I personally use LauncherProPlus. Yeah, the development is dead, but I've been using it since my OG Droid days, and it's served me excellently ever since. I don't need beauty in a launcher, just raw speed and a small footprint.
Thanks again!

just a tip for when you update to 2.1
you really shouldn't need to wipe data, I haven't wiped data once when updating from 2.0> 2.xand I have had zero issues,
also, nitro has added a couple features/options to the stock eclipse launcher which are nice, u can choose amount of home screens, infinite loop, uninstall app when u long press then hold it over the trash can for a second (pretty useful, no more needing To go into manage apps to uninstall apps)
if ya wanna venture from that I recommend adw ex or go launcher ex(nitro has an eclipse theme in the market for go launcher in case ya wanna support him (it's like a buck) and wanna keep an eclipse theme with a different launcher that has more options)
either that or just do a quick market search or Google search for "light weight launcher" to get some nice options, there's an almost endless list of launchers to try, I've spent hours trying different launchers and still haven't touched half of them lol, there is so many choices it's crazy, there is something for every type of user, from minimalistic launcher to fancy ones like spb shell and such

I'm using Go Launcher EX myself. Have been since I ran an LG Vortex (now THAT was a SLOW phone but man, as far as music goes, it never skipped unlike the X2. Sad since it's an ARM6 600mhz single-core phone AND it had an unlocked bootloader so I could overclock the thing!).
For launchers I started with pro launcher. Then ended up with go launcher for a while. Now I am using adw ex. However I really like the new work nitro did with pro launcher. I would of stayed on it except for the 3D app drawer. Don't get me wrong it looks awesome and I used to use similar app drawer with the shell launcher but it triggers my vertigo.

I also use ADW EX, it has been the most consistently bug free for me depending on the settings you use it can be lightning fast or just as bad as a stock launcher, but generally it is much faster than the stock ones and it is more user friendly.
Love all the insight here. I was running cm7 for a while but now on eclipse 2.1 and I haven't wanted to go back to cm7 yet. I also usually use adw ex but have been sticking with stock launcher. This go around. I reboot my phone at least once a day. I haven't tried any scripts yet but I haven't felt the need to iether. I try too keep as few apps running as possible. I also found that after I get done charging my phone I will reboot. Seems to give me more free ram. 185mb right now.

CM7 rocks. Once CM9 becomes stable and a beta it will most likely be the best ROM on the X2.

I must say, after upgrading to 2.1, uninstalling 34 apps (mostly large games) that i seemingly never used, and installing the build.prop mash up, i haven't had any issues yet so far! 2.1 seems to be quite the upgrade from 2.0. Thanks to everybody who posted their experience/ideas!
I started experiencing even more lag lately and it would immediately show up even after reboot. This started happening after I set up TBU to do a nightly cache clean and reboot.
What I finally figured out was, V6 Turbocharger scripts mem settings were not sticking! They were reverting back to the default for whatever reason. It was funny because the Lag Nullifier was still active.
So, I unturbocharged and everything via the scripts and set it back up to use local.prop and that seemed to fix everything.
Another thing I did was install Autostarts to tell it what apps should NOT start when certain system events occur (during startup, after startup, media change, etc).
I also used the Motorola Performance Manager to set up most apps to be killed two minutes after the phone goes to sleep.
I reinstalled Widgetlocker and things have been running smooth all day where as before, after playing many games (like Templerun, Fruit Ninja, Sims Free to Play, etc), I would notice lag would seep in and would require a reboot to fix it.
Now, with my set up (TBU clears cache and reboots nightly, Autostarts, Motorola Performance Manager, V6 TC), things are running smooth, smoother than they have before.

ROM that doesn't slow with time?

Here I am couple of days after flashing my phone from Shpongle 2.3 rom to BEASTsense 2.1.
First things first a huge thanks to 1ceb0x and all those keeping my antique hero living on!
A great rom 1ceb0x once again thanks - hero's now a worthy competitor for Usain Bolt lol.
Back to the topic: my question: 'Is it possible to have an android phone/ROM that won't get slower over time- ie. after a few weeks or months of use?-
Why/ how does it happen? - app caches getting too full?
Is there any clearing up etc that we can do to prevent this'. (I'm aware of less homescreens widgets and apps)
My phone-
I've pretty much never cleared up my SD card- further than, on occasions deleting a few folders etc that have been left over from previously installed apps, the standard wiping the caches before flashing a new ROM, and deleting the /data /.Trash /Android /Lost.DIR folders.
Further things I do that don't help my cause: is when using a non sense ROM have to install htc ime keyboard and a dialler that searches through contacts.
Over the years have probably flashed about 10 custom ROMs.
Thanks for reading my post any tips/ advice would be appreciated.(Sorry for the essay!)
a lot of roms slow down when you install a lot of apps so maybe try not to use up all/most of your storage. although i think every rom starts to slow down at some point. maybe after a few months of use. however i did read somewhere that if your rom does start to slow down after a few months then just boot into recovery and clear the cache and dalvik cache then the rom should 'fly' again

Thanks for the reply is really useful to know that clearing the cache and dalvik in recovery should help keep the rom fast, will definitely do this if I notice it's slowed down.
I'm quite good with my apps, try and stay on top of them uninstalling apps am not using.
latest shpongle rom should not start to slow down in time. if it does, try to do what Beats by Messi told you and it will be fine after that.
thanks for using it !
oh, and please use latest sphongle. it is much more improved than 2.3. too much speed you can't handle with
Thanks 1ceb0x I really appreciate your work- keeping hundreds(not so sure about 1000's? of hero's still going ) liked shpongle a lot, but always find myself returning to 2.1 roms, imo the hero seems to be able to handle that rom really well.

I installed shpongle 2 days ago and was really happy with it, but it’s already starting to slow down. I haven’t installed much: Go SMS Pro, MessagEase (only keyboard that works for me), aldiko and picross, OI File Manager and One Touch Time.
When I look into settings, I see only 57MB RAM are used (98MB free), and I use only 8,1MB storage (158MB free). That doesn’t seem much. I can’t figure out why Go SMS is so slow. Should I let go of it and use the stock messaging app?
